The Wednesday Night Salon has been meeting each week of the year (no break for holidays, weather) since July 2001 in pursuit of good talk.  Bring a dish at 5:45 pm and join us.  We are usually about 12 people of varied erudition and age.  We like to talk politics, environmentalism, social issues, literature, the arts, ad any blamed thing we want.  Sometimes we have a special presenter.  We emphasize good fellowship and civility always.  Way fun!  Everyone welcome.  3901 Clifton Avenue 45220.

SECTION ONE:  Table Notes

These rough notes have not been approved or edited by the speakers and contain inevitable misunderstandings and misquotes.  Also, opinions expressed are NOT necessarily Ellen’s.

At the Table this Wednesday:

Attendees:

Dennis Kinsleyt, Vlasta Molak, Mara Helmuth, Jonathan Rosenberg, Mira Rodwan, Mr. G., Marvin Kraus, Gerry Kraus, Lauren Hanisian, Josie Tragesser, Ellen Bierhorst, Julia Yarden

Announcements
Mira:  Vandanna Shiva gave a good lecture.  Pres of Slow Food Internat’l.  Talked about soil and water.  Corporate greed.

Vlasta she didn’t mention population.
Gerry: for those of you in Clifton.  The UC Power plnt has beenout of compliance with pollution standards for 2, 3 yrs.  On notice by the EPA.

Jonathan:  this Sat at Maketewa Fantasy Ball in Northside 4 – 7 at McKie Rec Center.  Whole thing starts around noon.  Celebrating the watershed of the Maketewa (aka Mill Creek); dress up as a form of native life.  Geo Hardebeck.

Julia:  friends work as pages in the White House and say Obama is frayed and nearing nervous breakdown, perhaps because his approval ratings are lower...

Topics:  Election Results...
Obama’s approval ratings ...

ELECTION RESULTS: COUNCIL
City Council = Roxanne Qualls 41,290 9.1%
Cecil Thomas 33,790 7.5%
Chris Bortz 31,382 6.9%
Jeff Berding 29,086 6.4%
Leslie Ghiz 28,579 6.3%
Chris Monzel 28,416 6.3%
Charlie Winburn 27,542 6.1%
Laure Quinlivan 27,333 6.0%
Laketa Cole 27,332 6.0%

Cassinos passed.  47 – 53%

Gerry  I got an email the day before the election from an architect; a Casino on broadway commons will ruin the 19th century architecture of the neighborhood.

Vlasta:  it will be sustainable.  You’ll be able to waLK  to the jail.
Julia:  I was recently at the jail.  1/3 of the people were homeless.  Another third were mentally ill, and that’s their only crime.  ... So few beds available that the homeless people were worried about being sent out.  When I was there, there was no room.

Marvin The same developer is doing Cleveland and Cincinnati; another one is doing Cols and Toledo.  Apparently a lot of money can be realized by local gov’t once it  is up and running.

The issue to borrow money to give 1,000 to veterans.  Passed.

The Agricultural Board passed.  Issue 2.
Julia independent agricultural regulatory agency to behave as it’s own legislative body.  Members by appointment, by an exec committee.  No public oversight.  I see foxes watching the hen house. They are there to further the Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs).
Mira a friend at the Northside farmers’ market thinks this is the beginning of corporate takeover of the government.  Codex Alimentarius.

(?)
Julia
:  Codex Alimentarius... Rules of everything that is eaten. From the UN now.  Innitially there was to be no sweeping global food regulations.  Monsanto and Archer Daniels wrote the regulation and it was accepted by the UN.
Rules out things like raw milk, organic meat production, hormone and anti biotic free animals.  Under Codex all animals have to be treated by their hormones...
Gross Claus is a German toxicologist, is the one who insisted on the toxicology approach, treating foods as drugs.
48  years ago it was started;

School bd:  Cooper-Reed, Bates, Ingram were elected (incumbents), and also Vanessa White.

Mr. G:  Apparently there is a wholesale loss of effectiveness in governmental regulatory agencies.  Is it incompetence or control by corporations.

Gerry:  Brooksley Born ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooksley_Born), was working in government, in ‘98 discovered about Madoff, but Greenspan, Geithner, Sommers all ignored her.

Mr. G:  I didn’t know about the Madoff connection.  ... But Greenspan did a mea culpa.  “I was wrong”.  But doesn’t mention Born having warned him.
Why isn’t she advising the president?

Marvin:  some of these people like Somers said It wasn’t supposed  to happen like this; we took off the regs and thought everybody would be honest.

Mr G:  it’s more sophisticated than that.  We discussed moral hazard.  Those people are trying to stay competitive.  Were.  They were  not dishonest relative to the culture they were in, namely profit making.

Gerry:  one of Ayn rand’s disciples was Alan Greenspan’s who believed in laissez faire.
Vlasta:  the obscene salaries those guys were making on Wall St.  ...

Mira:  didn’t the libertarians start with Ayn Rand?  (yes)

Marvin:
School levy passed; library issue passed; MRDD passed;  Museum Center passed.  Family Services and Talbert House passed.
Issue 9, did not pass.  (So Council is free to make decisions about Street Car project.)
Water Works issue passed.  (sale of water works would now require a public referendum)

Council:

7 incumbents were returned to office.
Harris not elected.
Crowley was replaced by Winburn.
Quinlivan was elected.

ELECTION RESULTS: COUNCIL
City Council = Roxanne Qualls 41,290 9.1%
Cecil Thomas 33,790 7.5%
Chris Bortz 31,382 6.9%
Jeff Berding 29,086 6.4%
Leslie Ghiz 28,579 6.3%
Chris Monzel 28,416 6.3%
Charlie Winburn 27,542 6.1%
Laure Quinlivan 27,333 6.0%
Laketa Cole 27,332 6.0%

So of the former 5 progressives making a council majority, only 4 remain.  So the mayor doesn’t have a majority.

I predict Winburn will join the mayor’s team.
How could anyone vote for Winburn?

Mira  he has big signs; is anti-abortion; is anti-gay.  Is a minister.  Fundamentalist.

Vlasta:  water bills will rise because they are going to build stormwater tunnels... Botched job ... Karen Ball didn’t know what she was doing.

Mara:  the Maine voters voted against gay marriage.  They undid what the legislature had created.  By about 4% of the vote.  It’s just a matter of time before it goes the other way.

Vlasta:  In Germany they have gay marriage.
... I’ll be going to Copenhagen in December.  Climate Change conference 7 – 18 of Dec.
There will be an alternative conference organized by Peter Block; small group.

Mira:  let’s have a spiritual moment , hands towards each other, gathering loving powerful energy and send towards the White House.  To prepare the speech in Oslo (accepting the Peace Prize).

Hugs to all,

Ellen
