Health Care Reform Legislation

WEEKLY:  Health Care Reform section

Help Public Option in the Health Care Bill

Dear Ellen,

Over just the past two weeks, nearly 60,000 people have already completed my brief online survey about the importance of the public option in the current health care reform debate. What a response!

This feedback couldn't come at a more critical time. Now that the House has acted, the debate shifts to the Senate where I'm continuing to work with other Senators to craft as strong a health care reform bill as possible -- and these early survey results are having a real impact.

e!

The good news is, thanks to the work of so many progressive activists all across the country, the question is no longer if we will have some sort of public option in the final bill, but instead what form it will take: a full 50-state public option, opt-out, opt-in, or a trigger.

That's why I launched this online poll, to gauge support for each of the many forms of a public option currently under consideration for the final health care reform bill. Based on the survey responses we're getting, Americans are clearly paying attention to what their elected officials are doing in Washington -- especially when it comes to passing a robust form of the public option.

I need to hear from everyone before Friday, so I can publish the results of our online survey on Monday. There's still time for everyone you know to weigh in on the public option, and I'd love to hear from them.

I believe that a robust public option must give more Americans more choice from day one, to help control the skyrocketing costs of health care and force the insurance industry to be more competitive.

I know where you stand. Now I want to hear what your friends and family think, too, before our health care reform bill comes to the Senate floor.

This is the time to make our voices heard in this critical health care debate. Thanks for your help.

Sincerely,

Dick Durbin
U.S. Senator

P.S. As more and more people participate in this survey, my argument to fellow Senators becomes even stronger, but I need to wrap up our survey on Friday so I can publish the results on Monday. Don’t go into a long explanation-just tell them in a sentence or two that they can repeat back. The staffers have a chart where they check off what you say-so they have single payer on the chart or public option. They write down your zip code. If you make a special comment,it is written in the margin.  At the end of the day they compile and send it to the Congressperson.
