TOPIC nominated by Mr. G.: will there be rioting if Obama does NOT win?
TOPIC: no one understands the economic crisis. (No, because no one understands it!)
Marvi: yy opinion of what is happening.
We have become a cridit economy, which is different from when I was raised...a cash economy. When we bought our house 50 years, first time we borrowed money. Cars, houses, credit cards, ... You charge everything. So what has happened is that creative people created a new market in the securities industry. Brite idea of taking groups of mortgages and then selling stock in the companies that were holding the mortgages. In the old days you went to the local bank and got your mortgage and they held the loan and you made your payments to them. In Cinti. They had Building and Loans.
So this whole new bundling of mortgages. The banks (proded by the US gov’t) offered mortgages whether people could afford it or not. So there was a motive to give more mortgages. Then a new profession, the mortgage broker. So then there are compaies you never heard of golding loans; they would give the loan and sell it, and it would be “guaranteed” by AIG, for instance. Called Credit Something Swap. So it wasn’t regulated because it wasn’t really “insurance”.
So loans were made in excess of the true value of the property; appraisers gave inflated valuations of the property; then you had variable rate loans, AIMs. After 3 years the rate increases and then you can’t make the payments.
Adrienne: say you make a loan of 100 k; but you can end up owing 110 k because of “deferred interest”.
Marvin so people invested in these bundles because they were making 8% or more return on their money. Insured bonds. Greedy people grabbed it, and didn’t pay attention to how solid they were.
So then what sets it all off, people default on their mortgages. Meanwhile people take out “equity loans” on the inflated valuation of their homes. Meanwhile real estate stops going up, reality sets in, and people owe $150k on a house only worth 75k. So some people walk away. Default.
Then it starts spiraling. So these “bundles” are no longer making money because people aren’t paying their mortgages principle and interest monthly payments.
In other countries it was going on as well, though the US was by far the worst.
So the entities who bought these bundles are getting zero return on investment. But it is “insured”. But AIG guaranteed it, and now they can’t make good on the guarantee. So AIG went bust.
It wasn’t regulated... That was government’s doing. Greenspan (ex head of the Federal Reserve) thought “it would all work out”. Thought the banks and financial institutions would use good sense.
Everybody in the chain was at fault.
Issue: Should we let these financiers go hang? Or should the gov’t step in because the consequences so grave.
So the Senator from NY says he proposes that any bank who takes federal bail out should stop paying dividends to stock holders.
Today the court index shows one of every 2 suits filed is a foreclosure. Unbelievable!
Gerry I said why don’t they require, in exchange for the federal bail out, that they renegotiate the mortgages.
... Now it is expanded from home loans. For instance the auto industry wants money, despite having failed to retool their plants etc.
Marvin: the legislature passed a law prohibiting loan shark “pay day Loans”.
Adrienne: ?
Marvin: Fanny Mae and Freddie Mack had to be bailed out by the Fed. Gov’t.
Do you punnish greedy vultures, or bail them out to prevent collapse of the system.

Marvin: a lot of people in this country still have huge wealth. Not everybody is suffereing in this!
Adrienne: my clients can’t come for massage because they can’t afford.
Miriam: my house is for sale and can’t find a buyer 18 months.

Mr. G. there isn’t such a thing as “wrong” price on a house. It is connected to world conditions. The market place changes.
It is an interesting problem whether to have government regulation or not.

Marvin: gambling has gone on, and people now want their money and it isn’t there.
Ginger: shift in money and attitudes. Unbelievable increase in the ratio of the richest and the poorest people. Squeezing out the middle class.
Gerry: there are banks and s & ls who didn’t buy into the bubble, and they are fine.
... I have invitations come in the mail to have a new credit card. ... Yesterday in line the lady in front of me paid with credit card, but it was not good, so the lady pulls out another card, and that one works! There are people who have 10 or 12 cards.
Ginger: this is how Spike Lee became a major producer.
Mira some of the LLCs buy up stuff, half fix it, sell it, -- houses — and then they change their name and can’t be found.
Marvin: not just mortgages; they gambled and they lost. The big financial institutions.
Adrienne: a few years ago when you bought stock in Duke, it was actually Duke, but today you might buy Duke but who knows what they have invested it in?
Ginger: it used to be that you bought the stock because the company was being managed well and doing well. Now
Ellen used to be you ‘d buy stock in a company because you trusted that company to pay dividends. Now it is just about how many people want to buy their stock because they think the stock price is going up. Disconnnect from the real value of the company.
Everybody has been drunk on the Dow Jones. Including me.
(But I got out of the stock market completely a year ago.) ... In the 1929 crash it was beause people were speculating, buying on margin. We htought it could never happen again. Ha Ha. Just the same today.
Adrienne: Dan Hershey just wrote a paper on our crumbling economy.
Marvin it’s a wonderful lesson that banks do make mistakes.
Brooke: can we watch Obama’s infomercial tonight at 8? (Yes.)
Miriam: I couldn’t relate to this conversation at all. I have never owned stock. ... So this topic is frustrating to me. All I can think of is to build a straw bail house, off the grid.
Marvin If our society was living that way we wouldn’t have this problem.
Miriam: ... Failing stocks are not going to buy food for the table.

Gov. Palin's nomination clearly alters the landscape for Alaskans as we survey this race for the presidency -- but it does not overwhelm all other judgment. ... despite her formidable gifts, few who have worked closely with the governor would argue she is truly ready to assume command of the most important, powerful nation on earth. To step in and juggle the demands of an economic meltdown, two deadly wars and a deteriorating climate crisis would stretch the governor beyond her range. Like picking Sen. People Are Dying. The Election Is Crucial.
People are committing suicide over losing their homes. A woman used her
husband’s hunting rifle in her mouth. It must have blown away 1/3 of her
head.
Why was our government not supervising the buildup to this mess over the
last half-dozen years? Because Bush, supported by McCain, stopped all
regulation. And it’s so EASY to regulate: “You cannot get a loan unless
you can really make the payments. Realistic down-payment required.
Nationally standardized mortgage documents. No ARMs allowed. No bundling
of mortgages. No new derivatives allowed without approval.”
People are skipping their prescription drug doses to save money. How
many are dying? There are children without healthcare because their
parents cannot afford it. Parents delay taking children to emergency
rooms because the collection agencies will chase them down and take
their car. How many are dying?
The Senate twice passed a bill this summer that would have given
healthcare to the children of families earning below $62,000 a year.
McCain voted against it. Bush vetoed it (twice). McCain applauded.
Five-year-old steps on a rusty nail? Wait some days, see if it gets
better. Skip the emergency room tetanus shot/ bloodwork ($1,150!). Take
a chance. With her losing her foot. Or worse.
The people are living longer now in 45 countries than in America. But, I
saw McCain looking straight at me saying we have the best healthcare
system in the world. Can you even name 45 countries?
Bush keeps trying to privatize all our social security accounts. He
argues that we should be able to invest our accounts in the stock
market. The nation’s elderly? People are right now thanking God that it
hasn’t happened. Hey, we’ve just seen that NOBODY knows how to manage
money. McCain vigorously supports Bush on this lunatic privatization plan.
People are going to stop it all. On election day.

Privatize Social Security?
To the Editor: Bush and McCain have been trying for 7 years to privatize all the social security money. Now that we see the virtual collapse of the economy and the stock market, we can only marvel at our good luck that they were blocked. Can you imagine the disaster of elderly people managing their own social security accounts in the stock market? It turns out that NOBODY knows how to manage money.
We tend to think that truly lunatic ideas will never pass. Well, McCain actually wants it. Obama and Biden will kill it if elected.

Commander-in-Chief ?
To the Editor: McCain is a known hothead and has a gambling habit. His total war experience is 5-1/2 years in prison in Vietnam forty-five years ago. All his long years in the Senate failed to alert him to the mistake of entering the Iraq war. He voted for it. His age and health make it a coin toss as to whether he’ll be functional for four years—and then Sarah Palin is commander-in-chief. Obama voted against this bankrupting war; he’s healthy, he chooses the smartest people, and he LISTENS.
I am more comfortable with Obama as commander-in-chief.

THE DECLINE OF THE UNITED STATES ?

Author of fourteen books, including "Must We Grow Old (From Pauling to Prigogine to Toynbee)" and "Entropy Theory of Aging Systems : Humans, Corporations, and the Universe"
Arnold Toynbee, the famous historian of the early 20th century, in his book, "A Study of History", described the "universalist state", referring to a nation that had been at the height of its political and military powers but had lost its powers. The universalist state forgets or is unable or unwilling to satisy the needs of its internal citizens and in compensation, engages in military excursions beyond its borders. The second law of thermodynamics, expressed by Ilya Prigogine, (Nobel Prize winner, chemistry, 1977), says that we fall apart from within, with increasing disorder, if we neglect the internal pressures and make little effort to renew ourselves by the flow of information, energy, and material through our boundaries. The barbarians, always lurking beyong our borders, but unable to penetrate when the nation state is strong, now are finally able to infiltrate through the weakened membrane of our boundaries, and diminish the history of the universalist state.
The question we must ask now is, Has the United States become such a universalist state, as we watch its infrastructure deteriorate and we see the widening gulf between the upper echelon of the privileged class and the increasingly stressed middle class and the poor. Are we now unable or unwilling to repair this damaged infrastructure as the United States engages in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan?

T-shirts, Pins Etc. When Voting: Since 1981, the Ohio Revised Code states that voters MAY NOT wear t-shirts, pins, hats, etc. that depict or promote a candidate or issue. I (JSK) called the office of the Ohio Secretary of State (Jennifer Brunner, Democrat) to confirm this fact. However, they explained that NO ONE WILL BE TURNED AWAY for this behavior. Those donning such materials will be encouraged to remove the hat or button, or to conceal the shirt's message by turning it inside out or zipping up their jacket, for example. Individuals refusing to abide by the Code will still be allowed to vote, but will be eligible to be prosecuted for violating the Code.
