Section One: Table Notes ............................................................................ (Note: these notes were taken at the table and have NOT been approved or corrected by the speakers.  Reader beware of inevitable misunderstandings and misrepresentations.  E.B.)
At the table Wednesday 12/26/07
Steve Sunderland, Vlasta Molak, Bill Limbacher, Mary Biehn,  Ginger Lee Frank, Santa, Bob Witanowoski, Adrienne Cooper, Judy Cirillo, Ellen Bierhorst, Gerry Kraus, Marvin Kraus, Mira Rodwan

Preamble read by Judy Cirillo.
Announcements at table:
Gerry:  We went to movie “The Great Debater”.  Marvelous!  Everyone should see it.  True story!  The story of James Farmer, founder of CORE (congress of racial equality).
Steve: I reviewd it in the NY Times online in “readers reviews”.  NYTImes.com>entertainment>movies> movie reviews> stephen holden’s review>reader comments > comment by Steve.
Barrie I am surprised to be here.
Adrienne: I am offering cooking classes starting Jan 3, vegan, my house Springrove Village/Winton Place, $25 each, full course meal included.  Appetizer to desert.  6 pm.  Phone: 542 0055.  I run marathons; will be 70 next month.  Feel great.
Steve:  as good a movie as “the great debaters” is, the “Kite runner” is equally as good.  Muslam people... No famous actors ... Done extraordinarily well.  What do we do with the emotional/guilt baggage  that we have.  At Esquire.
Vlasta  I have been running an environmental consulting co. 15 yrs, and Gaia Foundation for sustainable development.  Last 6 years working on huge project in Cincinnati’s heart...see it at WWW. Gaiafoundation.net.  We have designed a course, “Sustainable Cincinnati”.  Sustainable is defined by UN in 1992,... A development that would s top and reverse negative human impact on earth.  So ... Will deal with basic concept of sust. And apply to everyday life in Cinti.  What we could do .  Course starts Thursday night Jan 17 6 pm with dinner.  Friday 10 am through dinner.  Sat. 10 to 5.  Cost $360 including food.  T shirt, manual.  Location: the  newly opened Gaia Feast and Sust. Living Center, across street from City Hall.  Limited to 25 people.
Bill Santa was kind to me.  Now have new computer AND printer.  I can do printing work... Roman alphabet, cherokee language ....
Word processing.
Ginger Lee :  Saw Kite runner.  Great!  Felt v. authentic.  I took Bert Lambert and he loved it.  Agree with Steve.  Felt as though I was actually inside situations and cultures I would not otherwise get to experience.  That’s what film can do.  Some filmed in Kabul, some in Afghanistan.  The two children used in the film, their lives were endangered by their participation in the film... Depiction of an event that is taboo in that society ...
Steve there is an actor who plays a father of one of these children who .. Must be seen! Incredible, what does a father do.  Like also in “The Great Debaters”, a father: how do you maintain your dignity when the society is so oppressive.  I left there thinking about my own father, myself as a father...
Ginger :  one of the outcomes of the election of the new Mayor here in Cinti was a promise to reinstate the Environmental office. Mallory has gone further, created a task force/steering committee for climate protection in the city.  Interesting membership...from corporate to Sierra Club ... Established five task teams that pertain to climate change, seeking community involvement.  Individuals are invited to join ... They want the creativity of citizen input.  Larry Falkin, director of Office of Environmental Quality, has put out the word.  I have been asked to draft a letter to the task forces that asks them, while considering economic, social, environmental (“Triple Bottom Line”) they should also consider planetary sustainability.  We are urging for this task force.  Go online , google Office of Environmental Quality City of Cincinnati.  Or “Climate Protection Task Teams”.  The first mass meeting was a month ago.  Not too late to sign up and join.  (To sign  up or for more info:
contact Ginnell Schiller at ginnell.schiller@cincinnati-oh.gov or 513-352-6911.)  (See Annoucements section below, the green entry.)

TOPICS
Kwanza (Mira)
A favorite Holiday Story
Gerry: I am concerned about the quality of the election process in Ohio for next presidential election.  Sec’y of State has reviewed our voting machines and determined flaws, manipulation. Recommendation to return to paper balloting.  Want to discuss How do we convince the powers that be to return to paper balloting.  It would help to have a groundswell of support.
Vlasta I want to discuss tolerance in our society.  Couple weeks ago I was told a Muslim man in Canada strangled his daughter for refusing to wear the hijab.  ... Lecture by the Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire, openly gay, will get married to his  20  yr partner in June when the law changes.  He talked about homophobia and the problems of the Marriage Protection movement.  Roots are essentially misogyny.  C Span.
Steve and he has broken apart the international Episcopal church.  ... There is liberal Islam e.g. In Indonesia, there is fundamental Islam e.g. In Saudi Arabia, there is moderate Islam in Kuwait.
Ginger Four or five m inutes on Mithraism.  The source of Christianity.

KWANZA, presented by Mira

Maulana Karenga, creator of Kwanza, chair of Nat’l Assoc. of Kawaida organizations.  A pan-Africa and African American holiday celebrated by millions.  World African community.  “Habari Gani”, the traditional greeting.  7 nights, 7 candles, starting tonight.  1966 originated.  Reaffirm commitment to selves, community.  7 Principles or “Nguzo Saba” are guides of daily living.

  • umoja, unity.  In family, community, nation, race
  • kujichaguli: self determination
  • ujima: collective work and responsibility for our community
  • ujama: cooperative economics... Have our own businesses
  • niia; purpose, to restore our people
  • koomba, creativity.  More beautiful than when we came
  • imani: faith.  Believe in our people, our leaders, our people.

Families gather, expalin the symbol for that night, light the candle.  Wear African garments.  Singing, dancing, eating.  Many African Americans don’t celebrate Kwanza at all.
Gerry read in the Herald this week ... There is a big movement in the Afr. Amer. Community to eat more healthily ... Cartoon, “Kwanza means first fruits.”  Traditional Afr. Amer. Foods are fatty and greasy, fried, etc.
Steve re. the invisible culture.  When I saw “the great debaters” it struck me that I had never heard of Melvin Tolson, considered by many poets the prime poet of the 20th century,  an Afr. Amer.  Shocking invisibility of achievements of Afr. Amer.  He died in 1966.  Had a poem in Atlantic Monthly in 1943, “Dark Symphony”.  His influence not as great as Langston Hughes, another great poetry.  So Kwanza represents ... Denial of equality of recognition ... A major crime that we don’t know about him.  Our pub. Library has a wonderful collection of his work.
... Judge Geo. Edwards, here in Clifton,  his father the first lawyer for the NAACP in Texas in the ‘30’s, and was ostracized by the white community.
Gerry  I didn’t realize that Texas was as bad for Afr. Amers. As Mississippi.
Steve  death penalty is being outlawed in every state except one: Texas.  Brutality tradition.  Tolson was from Marshal TX.  In the movie played by Denzel Washington.  ... We don’t know the stories of every ethnic group... The Irish.  The Italians.  The Jews.  I used to walk in the cemetery by Jacob Marcus and Danny Ransahoff... Pointing out great people.

Marvin research is so wonderful... So much information.  You never get to the end.  Computer is so wonderful.  We should all encourage ourselves to keep learning.

Ellen... Orange; homeland security; airport; announcement.  Message, “Be afraid!”  I hate it!

Bill gays and lesbians; Indians in various communities in the country.  Very encouraging. “This life”.
Some groups refuse to release this program.  They don’t want to release stuff like Cherokee language written information that are not being shared.  A lot of stuff not being shared.
Marvin  60 years ago in college, studying the Navajo Indians.  I remember, men who had feminine tendencies were encouraged to go around in women’s clothes and that was fine.
Steve some Indian nations were like that, others became homophobic. Pre-alcohol, they were diverse.  Post Alcohol, people did insane things.  Abanakee nation I am most familiar with.  Wisconsin.  Homosexuals, retarded people considered sacred people.
Marvin  Why is it in some societies different people are treated kindly, while in others they are treated unkindly. Why?
Steve I am reading a biography of David, (Jewish King) by Jonathan Kirsch.

Santa:  people act (badly) when they are suffering.  ... Distinction between pain and suffering.  Suffering is an interpretation.  Change your interpretation of the reality and the suffering disappears.

Marvin:  When I broke my femur I kept a journal of the pain and the suffering.  Suffering was the things I wanted to do but couldn’t. Also worry and fear. Pain was physical.
Gerry  even physical pain can be alleviated or even removed through psychological means.
Ginger  I had root canals... Terrible pain, I wanted to die, on third night I decided “Pain is just a sensation, you can go with it rather than fight against it.”  I chose to surf the pain.  Like a switch in my head, a choice.  Amazing.  Transformative.

Steve Buddhism says, “Befriend the pain.”  Rather than fight it or medicate it.  In the branch of Buddhism I am thinking out, and also in Lakota practice in the sun dance, you are lifted by a piercing in your chest for ecstatic experience.

Judy Catholics hve a saying, “offer it up to god”.  What does that mean.
Ellen the belief that undeserved suffering freely accepted and made as an offering... Becomes a redemption, a gift.  Story about giving up smoking for the sake of a baby dying in Children’s hospital.  I longed to help that baby somehow, and the notion came, that I could take my struggle against cigarette addiction and pull free as a gift and offering for that child.

Ginger this couple whose daughters were shot ... The wife told the press, “We’ve turned it all over to God, and He is taking care of it.”  And I was jealous.

Santa  David’s psalms.  Was the source of terrible violations, e.g. Bathsheba’s husband being killed... And also amazing beauty.  We are taught we have the choice to serve life or to serve death.  ... It is our belief patterns.  Change beliefs and the experience changes.  Genesis 1:1::1.  “In the beginning God created the heaven and earth and the earth was void and without form and darkness was upon the face of the earth.”  ...
Ginger I think I disagree.  Hot and cold are not different, the absence of heat is what we call cold.
Santa  There is no creation of light in Genesis, there is a coming forth...
(We got the bibles and compared the first  sentences of Genesis.)

Santa:  god created heaven, the contextual field.  Elohim is plural and feminine.  Not the same as Lord God, which means ruler.  ...

Ginger:  Mithra was a god first in Zoroastrian religion and eventually beame equal to the sun god.  Was like a duality. Became its own cult in Persia from 7th cent. BC, ... Very popular in 2nd century B.C.E.  By then All the Roman emperors were Mithra worshipers.  Born 25 December of a virgin, was attended by wise men and kings, a star led them to the birth.  Worked miracles, healed the sick.  Was crucified. Born in a cave.  Had 12 disciples based on the signs of the zodiac.  The last Mithraian emperor was Constantine who became Christian by merging with Mithra with Jesus.  Moved Jesus’ birthday to Dec. 25.  Now all the Mithraian peoples became Christian by one stroke!  Brilliant stroke.

Steve  James Carroll has a book Constantine’s Sword which reviews this issue.  Brilliant.  Political.

Marvin This is the most literate group I’ve ever been part of!

CITY OF CINCINNATI GLOBAL WARMING INNITIATIVE

FROM BILL MESSER
Ellen, Here's some information re. the City's Climate Protection Task Teams for all the Salonista list. I'm attaching the originating document (which includes the composition of the Steering Committee); the second document issued is below. WM

Are you concerned about Global Warming?
Do you wish there was more that you could do about it?
If so, then Cincinnati wants you!!!

All of us contribute to global warming - every time we turn on a light, ride in a car, or throw away trash.  We can all take individual actions to reduce climate change, but if we band together, we can do more.

Task Teams are now forming, to develop a regional Climate Action Plan for reducing green house gas emissions (GHG.)  There will be 5 teams, focused on: energy; transportation; waste; land use; and advocacy.  People with knowledge and/or passion are invited to join one of these teams.

Q: Will these Task Teams be listened to?

A: Yes!  The City Council voted unanimously to request this plan.  The Mayor has appointed a steering committee to lead the planning effort.  Everyone from the Chamber of Commerce and Duke Energy to the Sierra Club and the U.S. Green Building Council has agreed to participate.  The only thing missing is you.

Q: What would I have to do?

A: Each Task Team will meet about once a month, with the 1st meeting on Monday, December 10th from 4:00-6:30.  Task Team members will: brainstorm actions that could be taken to reduce climate change; evaluate potential actions for feasibility, impact, cost, etc; prioritize the ideas; resulting in a set of recommendations for inclusion in the Climate Action Plan.  The whole process should be completed in about 4 months.

Q: Who is eligible to participate?

A: Everyone.  Task Teams will include representatives of business, government, non-profits, and private citizens.  Knowledge and experience are helpful, but not required.

Q: How do I sign up, or get more information?

A: Contact Ginnell Schiller, City of Cincinnati Climate Protection Coordinator, at 352-6911 or Ginnell.Schiller@cincinnati-oh.gov

The Climate Protection Steering Committee voted to create Task Teams consisting of volunteers representing a broad spectrum of perspectives and including individuals with subject matter expertise.  There are five teams, one each focused on:

i. Energy, including conservation, alternative energy, and green buildings;
ii. Transportation, including increased fuel efficiency, alternative fuels, mass transit, and bike/ped;
iii. Waste, including minimization, reuse, and recycling;
iv. Land Use, including patterns of development, creation and management of green space, and carbon sequestration.
v. Advocacy, including outreach to governments, organizations, businesses, citizens, and implementation

The mission of the Teams is to create a draft report for the Steering Committee including recommended GHG reduction goals and an Action Plan for achieving the goals.  Each team will have a Chair, Staff person and a sufficient number of members (i.e. 15 - 25) to perform the activities required to achieve this mission.

Chair’s duties – set meeting schedules, develop agendas, organize and run the meetings, assign action items, report to the Steering Committee and other duties as necessary.

Staff’s duties – support the chair, suggest data sources, research climate protection ideas, collect data and facilitate the data collection process, draft plan and reports, take meeting minutes and other duties as necessary.

Members’ duties – attend and participate in meetings.  Additional activities (research and writing) will be appreciated but not required.

Any questions, please contact Ginnell Schiller at ginnell.schiller@cincinnati-oh.gov or 513-352-6911.

Take Action Now for single payer Healthcare reform in Ohio!
The Governor is studying 5 plans, but NOT Single Payer!
Contact him (info. Below) to insist on single payer being studied.  ellen

From SPAN Ohio:
URGENT ACTION ALERT!

On August 1, 2007, Governor Strickland issued a press release announcing that Ohio was one of 14 states selected to participate in the 2007 Coverage Institute sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundations State Coverage Initiatives (SCI) program.

The release explained that The SCI program assists states which are considering systematic substantial and comprehensive health reform to develop and implement policies that will expand access to health care for the entire uninsured population in a state by expanding public programs and private sector reforms. The program will assist the state in considering a spectrum of health care reforms.. SCI will work with a team of Ohio policy, legislative and stakeholder participants to facilitate discussion of reform options for the state and will assist in modeling and implementing those options.

Accordingly, Gov. Strickland has assembled a task force comprising a 12-member State Coverage Initiative Team and a 40-member Healthcare Coverage Initiative Advisory Committee. $500,000 tax dollars have been allocated to study health care options the goal being to cover a third of Ohios 1.5 million uninsured. What about the other two-thirds? And what about the additional millions of underinsured?

Incredibly, single-payer the only plan that would help ALL Ohioans, uninsured and underinsured alike will NOT be included among the plans to be studied. Only plans that include the private insurance companies are being considered. This is unacceptable. (See letter from U.S. Congressman Dennis Kucinich to Governor Strickland urging inclusion of single-payer in the study.)

Please take Action NOW
1. Contact Governor Ted Strickland
    Governor's Office
    Riffe Center, 30th Floor
    77 South High Street
    Columbus, OH 43215-6108

    Contact the Governor Online
2. Contact Janetta King, Governor Strickland's Policy Director
    janetta.king@governor.ohio.gov   Phone: 614-466-3555

3. Go to the Governor's Public Input Request Site

Tell them that as an Ohio constituent, you want a single-payer plan (H.B.186 and S.B. 168) to be one of the five models studied by the Governor's task force for healthcare reform in Ohio.

Talking points:
·  Single-payer is the only plan that will provide guaranteed,
quality, comprehensive medical and dental care to EVERY Ohioan.

·  A single-payer system is the most fiscally conservative. Ohio
H.B.186 and its companion bill in the Senate, S.B.168, i.e., the
Health Care For All Ohioans Act, would save more than $11 billion in
  health care costs.

·  Commissioned studies were done in Colorado and California by the
highly regarded Lewin group. Single-payer was included as a
model. They concluded that single-payer will, "cover more people, for
  more services, for less money."

·  Plans being considered by the State Coverage Initiative Team of 12
have been tried in other states and have failed miserably, resulting in
an increase in the number of uninsured. It is a disservice to the
people of Ohio not to include a single-payer model.

·  The people of Ohio insist that a single-payer plan be considered in
the comparative analysis done by our governor, for Ohioans, with our
  tax dollars.

If you would like to do more, contact one or more of the members of the Healthcare Coverage Initiative Advisory Committee. It would also be helpful for you to contact your State Representative and your State Senator to express your support for H.B.186 and S.B.168.

If you send an email to any of the above, please CC: spanhealthcare@aol.com and let us know what response, if any, you receive.

Thank you for taking the time to take action!

Hundredth Monkey...  First, the phenomenon as reported; then, it’s a myth according to Wikipedia

The Hundredth Monkey

by Ken Keyes, jr.
The Japanese monkey, Macaca fuscata, had been observed in the wild for a period of over 30 years.

In 1952, on the island of Koshima, scientists were providing monkeys with sweet potatoes dropped in the sand. The monkeys liked the taste of the raw sweet potatoes, but they found the dirt unpleasant.

An 18-month-old female named Imo found she could solve the problem by washing the potatoes in a nearby stream. She taught this trick to her mother. Her playmates also learned this new way and they taught their mothers too.

This cultural innovation was gradually picked up by various monkeys before the eyes of the scientists.

Between 1952 and 1958 all the young monkeys learned to wash the sandy sweet potatoes to make them more palatable.

Only the adults who imitated their children learned this social improvement. Other adults kept eating the dirty sweet potatoes.

Then something startling took place. In the autumn of 1958, a certain number of Koshima monkeys were washing sweet potatoes -- the exact number is not known.

Let us suppose that when the sun rose one morning there were 99 monkeys on Koshima Island who had learned to wash their sweet potatoes.

Let's further suppose that later that morning, the hundredth monkey learned to wash potatoes.

THEN IT HAPPENED!

By that evening almost everyone in the tribe was washing sweet potatoes before eating them.

The added energy of this hundredth monkey somehow created an ideological breakthrough!

But notice.

A most surprising thing observed by these scientists was that the habit of washing sweet potatoes then jumped over the sea --

Colonies of monkeys on other islands and the mainland troop of monkeys at Takasakiyama began washing their sweet potatoes.

Thus, when a certain critical number achieves an awareness, this new awareness may be communicated from mind to mind.

Although the exact number may vary, this Hundredth Monkey Phenomenon means that when only a limited number of people know of a new way, it may remain the conscious property of these people.

But there is a point at which if only one more person tunes-in to a new awareness, a field is strengthened so that this awareness is picked up by almost everyone!

(from the book "The Hundredth Monkey" by Ken Keyes, jr. The book is not copyrighted and the material may be reproduced in whole or in part. You can look at the whole book also.)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The "Hundredth Monkey Effect" is the name for a supposed phenomenon in which a particular learned behaviour spread instantaneously from one group of animals, once a critical number was reached, to all related animals in the region or perhaps throughout the world. Largely due to popularisation of this story, the "Hundredth Monkey Effect" phenomenon is now thought by some to occur in human populations with respect to ideas and beliefs in general even though the original story has been discredited (Myers 1985).
The story of the "Hundredth Monkey Effect" apparently originated with Lyall Watson in his 1979 book Lifetide. In it he claimed to describe the observations of scientists studying macaques (a type of monkey) on the Japanese island of Koshima in 1952. Some of these monkeys learned to wash sweet potatoes, and gradually this new behavior spread through the younger generation of monkeys—in the usual fashion, through observation and repetition. However, according to Watson the researchers noted that once a critical number of monkeys was reached—the so-called hundredth monkey—this previously learned behaviour instantly spread across the water to monkeys on nearby islands.
This story was further popularized by Ken Keyes Jr with the publication of his book The Hundredth Monkey. Keyes presented the "Hundredth Monkey Effect" story as an inspirational parable, applying it to human society and the effecting of (positive) change therein. Since then, the story has become widely accepted as fact, and has even appeared in books written by some educators.
The content of the book by Keyes was a substantive treatise on the effects of nuclear war on the planet and the devastation caused thereon.
An example of the effect Keyes was seeking is captured in some degree by a two-month prospective experiment and study to reduce violent crime in Washington in 1993. Based on the results of the experiment, the steady state gain (long-term effect) associated with a permanent group of 4,000 participants in the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi programs was calculated as a 48% reduction in violent crimes in the District of Columbia. More can be found here:
http://www.istpp.org/crime_prevention/, and many other places on the web. It is seen by many as a prime example of confusing correlation with causation.
Rupert Sheldrake has cited the "Hundredth Monkey Effect" as evidence of morphogenetic fields bringing about non-local effects in consciousness and learning.
In 1985, Elaine Myers re-examined the original published research in "The Hundredth Monkey Revisited" in the journal In Context.
In her review she found that the original research reports by the Japan Monkey Center in vol. 2, 5 and 6 of the journal Primates differ from Watson's story in significant ways. In short, it contains no evidence that the 'Hundredth Monkey' phenomenon exists; the published articles only describe how the sweet potato washing behavior gradually spread through the monkey troop and became part of the set of learned behaviors of young monkeys. There is no evidence at all of a critical number at which the idea suddenly spread to other islands, and none of the original researchers ever made such a claim.
Despite the lack of supporting evidence for the story as told by Watson and Keyes it is still popular among New Age authors and personal growth gurus and has become an urban legend and part of New Age mythology. As a result, the story has also become a favorite target of the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal and was used as the title essay in The Hundredth Monkey: And Other Paradigms of the Paranormal published by them in 1991.
I
n his book Why People Believe Weird Things, Michael Shermer explains how the urban legend started, was popularized, and has been discredited.
It is often claimed that the truth or falsity of the "Hundredth Monkey" story is a secondary issue, and that its true value and significance is as a sort of "transformative myth" that encourages those who believe in it to have an optimistic view of the possibility of positive change, particularly in human society.[citation needed]

Section Four: Books/Movies/Magazines/Reviews

I threatened to discontinue this section because so few folks were sending in the books they were enjoying or wanted to tell us about.  However, I got two letters asking we continue it and promises to write in. Hey!  So we’ll continue.
Below, some fantasy works touted by my son, daughter in law, and roomate Curt:

Pratchett:  "Making MOney"

Jim Butcher
Two Series: 1) The Dresden Files: "Storm Front", "Fool Moon", ... nine in series.

Announcements at table:
Steve Steve Novotny and wife say hi; just had baby Ulysses.  Now 15 mos.
Dan I sell printing presses and bindery equipment.
Judy on Christmas Day 2 pm pot luck at St. John’s on Resor; anyone welcome.  ... Card saying good bye to Shari Able who is leaving Friday for Los Angeles.   ... Quaker publication suggesting War Tax boycott for 2008.  They have a website:  www.wartaxboycott.org .  You can withold as little as 7% of your tax.
Steve I have a friend who has witheld her war tax for 4 years.  They haven’t bothered her.
David isn’t it amazing that the tax for the Vietnam War ended up on y our phone bills.  That’s true.
Santa  Last Sunday Ron Paul raised more money than ever any candidate in one day, 6.2 million.  On the internet.  Now getting more nat’l recognition.  He wants to abolish the IRS.
the Zeta’s warning is still in effect ... During the solstice remember bad things do happen to good  people ...
Brooke The Dem. Party of Iowa excluded Dennis Kucinich from the debate.
Vlasta:  Dennis should be elected, best candidate...  On Wed. I  spoke to the commissioners, 2 minutes.
Brooke WCET had a special biography of Ralph Nader, wonderful to see.  (Mira recorded it; we could watch it at the salon.)  We owe Ralph so much appreciation.  I had been  upset that he ran for president, but this program made me see it differently.  He was so trashed... Such a trajedy.
Mr. G. the Republicans are very good at not trashing their own people.
Carl  everyone really good cooks!
David  third week in February there will be an organic farmers in Granville, OH.I’ll be going.
Mira:  the Nader show:  “An Unreasonable Man”.  The most impt. Thing for me, besides vindicating his running for pres., was the behind the scenes re. the debate.  Corporate money, dems. And repubs. Got together and excluded Nader.  ... A friend in League of Women Voters, I told her they should make public these exclusions.  Corporate money makes the decisions.  ... Nader almost got arrested for having a ticket to watch the debate in a Fox studio where he was going to be interviewed.  The sheriff refused to let him in.  ... In the film you will get a point of view deeper even than Greg Palast exposed.
Vlasta the Oh sec’y state did study and concluded wide spread fraud.  ... Student spoke up at Kerry speech in Fla. Asking why Kerry had not objected to Ohio voter fraud, and the student was arrested and tasered.

Brooke:  Go see “Lars and the Real Girl” for a good time.

TOPICS

Vlasta, on what I am presenting to Co Commissioners.

I don’t like paying high taxes.  I didn’t want to pay for the jail proposed by the Co. Commissioners.  So every Wed. at 9:30 I give 2 min. speech to the Co. Commission.  Today Todd Portune was 35 min. late.  I heard on the radio about the Vera report on crime, justic system here.  ... Most in the jail don’t belong there.  A penny of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  ... Let the poor enjoy their reefers (laughter).  ... I quoted D. Eisenhower, “there are lies, damn lies, and statistics.”  It is absurd that 70% of the co. budget goes to “safety”, i.e. Jailing our citizens.  30% of the total co. budget is controled by Si Leis.  I also have just found out that the Sheriff has a submarine; has a tank; has two helicopter, a boat,.  I heard it from an att’y in the prosecutors office.
the criteria for Sheriff have been narrowed more and more so that only he and 4 others can qualify.
The Freedom Center is 300,000 in deficit.
At city council, I wished them happy holidays.  Said in 2008 we the people would be watching them carefully.  We the people deserve better than that you give hand outs to corporates.
I plan to open Gaia Feast and Sustainable Living Center across from City Hall.  Open 7 to 7; tea house.

Mira Peter Block on cover of Cincinnati Magazine.  Written by Kathy Y. Wilson (“Your Negro Tour Guide”.)

CHRISTMAS STORIES

MIRA
I was in the 5th grade in elementary school.  They were choosing parts for the living creche scene.  I was chosen to be Mary because I had brown hair and could sing a little.  Was going to sing “Away in  a Manger”.  I was delighted, also scared.  Suddenly someone realized I was Jewish, and therefore I couldn’t sing the part of Mary, and they chose Phyllis Tracy who was Catholic, blond, and couldn’t carry a tune.
Mrs. Stenner taught us songs in the music room.  I sang, “Onward MMM MMM soldiers”, because I loved to sing.

Ginger:  I loved “fall on your knees!”  ... Jewish also.

Ellen... Christmas story about being 22 years old in Paris all alone.  No time to recount (I am off to Denver to visit my daughter Anna and her partner Fran and their baby Jeremy.  Back Tuesday night.)

DAN:  in 1962, I was 5 yrs old.  My big brother brought me next door to see Santa.  My brother left me there and he went back home.  Suddenly in walks Santa, Ho Ho Ho.  Gifts.  Passes out boxes to everyone.  Gave me a present.  Very little.  Then he comes back with more presents... This time he skips me.  My first present was a little pin ball game.  I noticed Santa skips me.  Round three, skipped me again.  Round 4 ... Bigger and bigger gifts for the other children.  I burst out crying and ran home.  I didn’t know my father was playing Santa for the neighbors.  ... Next morning I learned my dad had been Santa.

Santa  People ask me if I play Santa Claus.  I say, “I don’t have to.”

“Harvey”, with Jimmy Stewart.  About the mental health system.  “Miracle on 43 street.”

Steve  I just read the Peter Block article.  If someone like Kathy wants to trash a man who wants to heal our city, I don’t know....  “No good deed goes unphnnished.”  She has no dirt on him, and yet he is the subject of a trashing.  There is s ometing deeper here.  We have a difficulty with people who say, “I am going to donate my services free to this city.”  ... Of course every human has flaws.  But if we liberals don’t appreciate him ...  !
Mira  Kathy’s cache is in being a smart ass and bitter.  Post traumatic slave syndrome.  She doesn’t want to sell out.  She is also brilliant.
Ellen I did not feel her article was perjorative of Peter.  Kathy is just an irreverant writer, I understand that.

Steve:
there are significant criticisms.  ... The situation for homeless in Cincinnati is getting worse. ... A serious criticism of someone doing citizen’s work, a person ...
Based on Nader’s work, all cars are safer; all drugs are safer.  When the ad hominum starts saying he has one suit, is too thin ..  Then we have lost something.
There is a standard philanthropic method...write a check.  Peter takes a different road.  He puts his time and energy into the city.  He doesn’t put his name on his work.  He lets it be the people’s projects.
I know Kathy.  ... There is no other place;  Peter moved his office into the Peasley center in OTR.
Why doesn’t she go after Lindner, or Chessley, or Mayerson whose priorities are the Jewish community.  ... It would be like criticizine the salon for not having enough vegetarian food.
I would e xpect from someone as brilliant as Kathy can be to see this.  An unusual aproach;.

Vlasta  Why not hhave Kathy to the salon ad ask her.?
Brooke  We are about creating new ways of being.  Let’s find this next year new ways of being with each other to change things. ... Nader, who has been more dedicated to us?  If we can turn on, attack someone like that ... How might we be not so quick to rush to judgement about others.  What can we do instead.  Positive alternative?  It is a cultural thing.  We need slogans.
Ellen  We tend to be ashamed and embarrassed of what is the best in ourselves; our tender heartedness, our compassion.  I want to respond to Brooke’s call, and resolve to resist that tendency in myself.

Mira:  I think Kathy has discomfort with the huge amount of racism hidden and not hidden in Cinti.

David a personal Peter Block story.  I was at one of his seminars.  Divided in small groups.  Asks incredible questions to get the conversation going.  Gets your best thinking going.  One of the people in my group was a Black man, a grad student, the first  to go to college in his fam.  One year to go and  his wife got cancer.  Had to decide whether to stay in school or drop out and care for her.  No family here in the city.   All this conflict started pouring out of him.  ...I don’t remember his name, wouldn’t recognize him again.  Meanwhile, it got to be my turn, and I started sharing about my ending marriage, family in disarray, feel so bad, need to learn to forgive my former wife so I can lead a sensible life, and this has been hard for me.  This man popped up and said, “Yes, and you need to forgive yourself.”  It hit me like a ton of bricks.  Huge healing moment for me.
Meanwhile, the grad student had decided to take his wife back to N. Carolina and care for her... Was able to come to the decision right there.  There was something magic going on.

Mira  there is something quite magical about it.  Spiritual element.  He can energize.

Steve  ...there is an increasing appreciation of open heartedness in Peter’s groups.  You go from a world that demolishes open heartedness, ...  I am reflecting on Jimmy Heath, the editor of Street Vibes, just died.  Commitment to justic for homeless, to gentleness.  People turned out today for the funeral.  Peter was there as well.  “It is all right to open your heart now.”  ... Peter has said, just take a moment here to think of yourself as an agent of gentleness.  ... Among only 5 people in the city, who have opened their hearts.

Brooke you have shifted this conversation to a deeper level.  Heart of what is peace creating.  ... I’d love to see us dedicate the New Year to trying to create new mores in our little groups to make heart more OK, OK to be human.  New territory.   Make it not taboo to be coming from the heart.

Ginger most disturbing watching the Nader movie.  He was almost always right on.  Just ahead of the curve.  Thirty years ago talking about corps. Running the country.  What troubles me is how other people behaved towards him ... Liberals ... They turned on him vicious.  Turned him into Satan.  Nader is a kind of  pure human being.  He trumps Mother Theresa.

Steve  the vicious attacks on Nader, comes from need to blame someone for the terrifying developments ... The 51% of the people who disagree with “me” profoundly, the ones who voted for Bush.  There is a sickness.  I was one who wanted Nader to step down ... Why didn’t he see that the country was tipping?  It is my desire to be in control at all costs that makes me want to demonize Nader.

Vlasta  I met Nader in 2001.  Was invited backstage.  Nader’s mom wrote “It happens in the kitchen” about how she raised her children, also wonderful recipes.  He was gentle, sweet.  Appreciated the food.  Signed the book.

Ginger  Ron Paul, whole program this Sunday on Meet the Press.

~ End of Table Notes~

Hugs to everyone,
Ellen

IN  GOD'S NAME, a CBS primetime special produced in association

with  the  acclaimed French filmmakers Jules and Gedeon Naudet,

will  explore  the  complex  questions  of our time through the

intimate  thoughts  and  beliefs  of  12  of  the  world's most

influential  spiritual  leaders.    These  diverse and powerful

voices   offer   provocative,   compelling   and   enlightening

perspective  on myriad issues in our post-9/11 world, including

the  rise  of  terrorism, fanaticism, intolerance and war.  The

two-hour  special will be broadcast Sunday, Dec. 23 (9:00-11:00

PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

On  the  day  of the terrorist attacks in September 2001, Jules

and  Gedeon  Naudet  were  caught  in the collapse of the World

Trade  Center.   Jules was shooting inside when the South Tower

fell.    "On  Sept.  11, we faced death and thought we had lost

each other," said Jules Naudet.  "This harrowing experience was

the first step in a journey that would take us around the world

searching for answers to the meaning of life."

The brothers' quest took them to Egypt, England, India, Israel,

Japan, Lebanon, Russia and the Vatican, as well as Illinois and

            South Carolina.

"We  chose  these  12  leaders  because  of  the vast number of

believers  ‹  more  than  four  billion  ‹  that  their  faiths

represent," said Gedeon Naudet.  "We also wanted to explore the

diversity of spirituality in our world today."

The  program  marks  the first time that this distinct group of

leaders has appeared in one broadcast.  These spiritual beacons

speak  out  about  violence  and  hatred  and  reveal their own

thoughts   about  faith,  peace,  unity,  tolerance  and  hope.

Viewers  will  see  them  in intimate settings, including their

homes  and personal places of worship.  Ultimately, through the

eyes   of  these  12  very  different  religious  figures,  the

filmmakers  discover  the  common ground among believers around

            the world.

The 12 leaders featured in this special, in alphabetical order,

            are:

o     Alexei  II,  Patriarch  of Moscow and head of the Russian

Joanna Macey lecture

Dear Friends,
I have told several of you about how consoling my experience was a week ago
Friday at the Brueggeman Center at XU,  an evening with
Joanna Macey, one of my
long-time heroines,  I took a few notes and want to pas them on to you, in
this season of cold and dark and warmth and light.
much love,
Julie

from my notes:
There's probably never been a generation that has had less regard for the
impact its own choices will have on future generations, such a contrast from that
of the Native Americans who discerned their choices by the impact they could
imagine they might have on 7 generations later.

But, not to fear: there is definitely a Revolution underway, but it is being
ignored by all the mainstream media (including NPR and the NY Times!) - it is
being referred to as "The Great Turning" - refering to the shift from
Industrial growth society to a "life sustaining society" - it is the Third Revolution
!  Industrial Growth Society is out of control and it is destroying itself. It
sets its goals on how fast it grows, only measuring its success by the profit
of large corporations.  Any system that tries to maximize a single variable
will self-destruct, because it is forced to make one "quick-killing" after
another.

Love Life, Stay Sane!!  We have to choose because the Great Turning is
happening at the same time as this Great Unravelling. How can we take joy at being
at this cusp and not go crazy?  First of all: there is no guarantee of anything
- so drop the need for that guarantee.  This is the edge of what Life can do
in, through and for us.  It is revealing our profound interconnectedness.
There are 3 ways to be part of this:  1) slowing down the destruction in myriad
little ways we can choose.   2) be involved in creating new ways and new
structures to create the new world in the shell of the old.  ie: not waiting for the
Revolution, but living it now.  (Coming back to Life - new book by Macey)   3)
transformation of consciousness:  our Earth is a Living Being, not our supply
house and sewer. It is alive! and we who have been used to such
instrumentalist thinking must have our minds transformed.
She gave 5 pieces of "advice" - guidelines - which she spoke briefly to and
then read an exquisite poem to accompany each point,  "so that our nervous
system would take in the core inspiration of each..." she said....unfortunately, I
could not capture all the titles...
"HOW TO WORK FOR THE EARTH"
1) "Stop Whining! -
this is a chance to live with deep meaning!!
poem by D.H. Lawrence.."When we get out of the glass bottle..."
2) "Dont' be afraid of the dark"
seeds grow in the dark, stars are visible only in the dark. Each one of us is
in grief and despair and pain for our world.
Rilke, from Book of Hours  "You darkness of whom I am born"
3)"Roll up your sleeves and link arms"
join with others to create this life-sustaining world, live the experience of
interconnectedness we know is true.
poem by Marge Piercy "To be of Use"
4) "Speak out"
Let this darkness be a bell tower for us to hear one anothers' voices.
Rilke:  "Quiet friend who has come so far, feel how your breath..."
5) "Act your Age"
Remember how old you are - every cell of your being has been here as long as
the earth - 4 billion years in this 14 billion year old universe.
and a spectacular poem by Thich Naht Hahn  that I did not get the title of
but if any of you know it, please send me the reference  something like "you -
being gas- have come here..."

"Let us feed our determination that Life continue with our life sustaing
choices" - Joanna Macey.

More support for 9/11 Conspiracy Theory
From Jeanette Raichyk

Yes I've read the story below (from last week’s Weekly) and I find that story unlikely to establish your position -- and Spencer's -- that the 7WTC has been shown to have collapsed by some means other than a bomb blast.(I have no position on the conspiracy theory.  Ellen)

Check the highlighted segments below.  In Green/Bold...  There is no conclusive solution at this point, and they even say that their most likely alternative to a bomb is highly unlikely by their own admission.

How do you manage to interpret this wiki piece as saying that 7WTC was not brought down, when Larry Silverstein told reporters from PBS that he'd authorized the building brought down?

The best the opponents of the bomb theory can say to attempt to discredit the bomb theory is that they couldn't *find* any evidence of a bomb blast, but as I pointed out, Guiliani had already shipped the columns that would have resolved the doubts out of the country as debris to be salvaged overseas.

Let's not be hypnotized by the smoke and mirrors, of credentials with no results, postponed promises and engineering razzle-dazzle shellgames.  You know I like engineering and math but I also abhor its use as a deterrent to attention spans.  Most annoying.

What about the collapse of Building 7 on 9/11? It wasn’t hit by planes.
Spencer, salonista engineer, sends us this, from Wikipedia:

Collapse WTC 7

7 World Trade Center on fire after the collapse of the Twin Towers on 9/11

As the North Tower collapsed on September 11, 2001, debris hit 7 World Trade Center, causing heavy damage to the south face of the building.[3] The bottom portion of the building's south face was heavily damaged from debris, including: damage to the southwest corner from the 8th to 18th floor, a large vertical gash on the center-bottom extending at least ten floors, and other damage as high as the 18th floor.[3] The building was equipped with a sprinkler system, but had many single-point vulnerabilities for failure. The sprinkler system required manual initiation of the electrical fire pumps, rather than being a fully automatic system. The sprinkler floor level controls had just a single connection to the sprinkler water riser, and the sprinkler system required some power for the fire pump to deliver water. Loss of power to the fire pump or other damage to the structure would have meant no functioning sprinklers. Also, water pressure was low, with little or no water to feed sprinklers.[26][27]

After the north tower collapsed, some firefighters entered 7 World Trade Center to search the building. They attempted to extinguish small pockets of fire, but low water pressure hindered their efforts.[28] A massive fire burned into the afternoon on the 11th and 12th floors of 7 World Trade Center, the flames visible on the east side of the building.[29][30] During the afternoon, fire was also seen on floors 6–10, 13–14, 19–22, and 29–30.[3] At approximately 2:00 p.m., firefighters noticed a bulge in the southwest corner of 7 World Trade Center between the 10th and 13th floors which was a sign that the building was unstable and might collapse.[31] During the afternoon, firefighters also heard creaking sounds coming from the building.[32] Around 3:30 pm, given that 7 World Trade Center was unstable and would possibly collapse, FDNY Chief Daniel Nigro decided to halt rescue operations, surface removal and searches along the surface of the debris near 7 World Trade Center and evacuate the area due to concerns for the safety of personnel.[33][31] At 5:20 p.m. EDT on September 11, 2001, 7 World Trade Center collapsed. The building had been evacuated and there were no casualties associated with the collapse.

In May 2002, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issued a report on the collapse based on a preliminary investigation conducted jointly with the Structural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers under leadership of Dr. W. Gene Corley, P.E. FEMA made preliminary findings that the collapse was not primarily caused by actual impact damage from the collapse of 1 WTC and 2 WTC but by fires on multiple stories ignited by debris from the other two towers that continued unabated due to lack of water for sprinklers or manual firefighting. Structural elements were exposed to high temperatures for a sufficient period of time to reduce their strength to the point of collapse.[6]

The report did not reach final conclusions about the cause of the collapse, but listed several issues requiring further investigation. FEMA made these findings:

Loss of structural integrity was likely a result of weakening caused by fires on the 5th to 7th floors. The specifics of the fires in WTC 7 and how they caused the building to collapse remain unknown at this time. Although the total diesel fuel on the premises contained massive potential energy, the best hypothesis has only a low probability of occurrence. Further research, investigation, and analyses are needed to resolve this issue. [Ch. 5, p. 31.]

Plan view of collapse progression, with structural failure initiating on lower floors, on the east side of the building and vertical progression up to the east mechanical penthouse

In response to FEMA's concerns, the Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) was authorized to lead a three-year, $16 million investigation into the structural failure and collapse of the World Trade Center twin towers and 7 World Trade Center.[34] The investigation, led by Dr S. Shyam Sunder, drew not only upon in-house technical expertise, but also upon the knowledge of several outside private institutions, including the Structural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (SEI/ASCE), the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), and the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY).[35]

Few photos and video clips exist that show the damage sustained to south face of 7 World Trade Center on 9/11. From a news helicopter, ABC News captured footage of the south face of 7 World Trade Center, including a glimpse of a gash, extending approximately 10 stories

NIST has released a video and still-photo analysis of 7 World Trade Center before its collapse that appears to indicate a greater degree of structural damage from falling debris than originally assumed by FEMA. Specifically, NIST's interim report on 7 World Trade Center displays photographs of the southwest façade of the building that show it to have significant damage. The report also highlights a 10-story gash in the center of the south façade, toward the bottom, extending approximately a quarter of the way into the interior.[36][3] A unique aspect of the design of 7 World Trade Center was that each outer structural column was responsible for supporting 2,000 sq ft (186 m2) of floor space, suggesting that the simultaneous removal of a number of columns severely compromised the structure's integrity.[37] Consistent with this theory, news footage shows cracking and bowing of the building's east wall immediately before the collapse, which began at the penthouse floors.[3] In video of the collapse, taken from the north by CBS News and other news media, the first visible sign of collapse is movement in the east penthouse 8.2 seconds before the north wall began to collapse, which took at least another 7 seconds.[3][38]

A progress report was released in June 2004, outlining NIST's working hypothesis.[39][3]
The hypothesis, which was reiterated in a June 2007 status update, is that an initial failure in a critical column occurred below the 13th floor, caused by damage from fire and/or debris from the collapse of the two main towers. The collapse progressed vertically up to the east mechanical penthouse. The interior structure was unable to handle the redistributed load, resulting in horizontal progression of the failure across lower floors, particularly the 5th to 7th floors. This resulted in "a disproportionate collapse of the entire structure."[40]

NIST anticipates the release of a draft report of 7 World Trade Center by the end of 2007.[40] The NIST is utilizing ANSYS to model events leading up to collapse initiation and LS-DYNA models to simulate the global response to initiating events.[41] The investigation of 7 World Trade Center has been delayed for a number of reasons, including that NIST staff who had been working on 7 World Trade Center were assigned full-time from June 2004 to September 2005, to work on the investigation of the collapse of the twin towers.[42] In June 2007, he explained, "We are proceeding as quickly as possible while rigorously testing and evaluating a wide range of scenarios to reach the most definitive conclusion possible. The WTC 7 investigation is in some respects just as challenging, if not more so, than the study of the towers. However, the current study does benefit greatly from the significant technological advances achieved and lessons learned from our work on the towers."[40]

BMCC's Fiterman Hall was heavily damaged from the collapse of 7 World Trade Center, and is undergoing deconstruction

Some conspiracy theorists believe the building collapses on September 11, including that of building seven, were the result of controlled demolition.[43][44] NIST has "
found no evidence of a blast or controlled demolition event". In its final report on building 7, they would "like to determine the magnitude of hypothetical blast scenarios that could have led to the structural failure of one or more critical elements."[42]

When 7 World Trade Center collapsed, debris caused substantial damage and contamination to the Borough of Manhattan Community College's Fiterman Hall building, located adjacent at 30 West Broadway, to the extent that the building is not salvageable. As of August 2007, Fiterman Hall is undergoing deconstruction.[45] The adjacent Verizon Building, an art deco building constructed in 1926, had extensive damage to its east façade from the collapse of 7 World Trade Center, though was able to be restored at a cost of US$1.4 billion.[46]

7 World Trade Center

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

7 World Trade Center is a building in New York City located across from the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan. The name 7 World Trade Center has referred to two buildings: the original structure, developed in 1984, and the current structure. The original building was destroyed on September 11, 2001 and replaced with the new 7 World Trade Center, which opened in 2006. Both buildings were developed by Larry Silverstein who holds a ground lease for the site from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The original 7 World Trade Center was 47 stories tall, clad in red exterior masonry, and occupied a trapezoidal footprint. An elevated walkway connected the building to the World Trade Center plaza. The building was situated above a Consolidated Edison power substation which imposed unique structural design constraints. When the building opened in 1987, Silverstein had difficulties attracting tenants. In 1988, Salomon Brothers signed a long-term lease, and became the main tenants of the building. On September 11, 2001, the building was damaged by debris when the adjacent Twin Towers collapsed. Its structural integrity was further compromised by fires which burned throughout the afternoon. The original 7 World Trade Center collapsed at 5:20 p.m. on September 11 due to the combined effect of structural and fire damage.

The new 7 World Trade Center construction began in 2002 and was completed in 2006. It is 52 stories tall and still situated above the aforementioned power substation. Built on a smaller footprint than the original to allow Greenwich Street to be restored from TriBeCa through the World Trade Center site and south to Battery Park, the new building is bounded by Greenwich, Vesey, Washington, and Barclay streets. A small park across Greenwich Street occupies space that was part of the original building's footprint. The current 7 World Trade Center's design placed emphasis on safety, with a reinforced concrete core, wider stairways, and thicker fireproofing of steel columns, and incorporates numerous environmentally friendly features.

The original 7 World Trade Center was a 47-story building, designed by Emery Roth & Sons, with a red granite façade. The building was 610 feet (186 m) tall, with a trapezoidal footprint that was 330 ft (101 m) long and 140 ft (43 m) wide.[1][2] Tishman Realty & Construction managed construction of the building, which began in 1983.[1] In March 1987, the building opened, to become the seventh structure of the World Trade Center.

The building was constructed above a Con Edison substation, which had been on the site since 1967.[3] The substation had a caisson foundation designed to carry the weight of a future building on the site of 25 stories containing 600,000 sq ft (55,700 m2).[4] The final design for 7 World Trade Center was for a much larger building covering a larger footprint than originally planned when the substation was built.[5]

The structural design of 7 World Trade Center included features to allow a larger building than originally planned to be constructed. A system of gravity column transfer trusses and girders was located between floors 5 and 7 to transfer loads to the smaller foundation.[3] Existing caissons installed in 1967 were used, along with new ones, to accommodate the building. The fifth floor functioned as a structural diaphragm, providing lateral stability and distribution of loads between the new and old caissons. Above the seventh floor, the building's structure was a typical tube-frame design, with columns in the core and on the perimeter, and lateral loads resisted by perimeter moment frames.[4]

A shipping/receiving ramp, which served the entire World Trade Center complex, occupied the eastern quarter of the 7 World Trade Center footprint. The building was open below the third floor, providing space for truck clearance on the shipping ramp.[4] The spray-on fireproofing for structural steel elements was gypsum-based Monokote which had a two-hour fire rating for steel beams, girders and truss, and a three-hour rating for columns.[6]

7 World Trade Center, behind and to the left of the Twin Towers

Mechanical equipment was installed on floors four through seven, including 12 transformers on the fifth floor. Several generators in the building were used by the Office of Emergency Management, Salomon Smith Barney and others.[6] Storage tanks contained 24,000 gallons (91,000 L) of diesel fuel to supply the generators.[7] Fuel oil distribution components were located at ground level, up to the ninth floor.[8] After the World Trade Center bombings of February 26, 1993, New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani decided to situate the emergency command center and associated fuel tanks at 7 World Trade Center, possibly adding to the devastation of the September 11 attacks.[9][10][11][12][13][14] The roof of the building included a small west penthouse and a larger east mechanical penthouse.[3]

Each floor had 47,000 sq ft (4,366 m2) of rentable office space which made the building's floor plans considerably larger than most office buildings in the City.[15] In all, 7 World Trade Center had 1,868,000 sq ft (174,000 m2) of office space.[6] Two pedestrian bridges connected the main World Trade Center complex, across Vesey Street, to the third floor of 7 World Trade Center. The lobby of 7 World Trade Center had three murals by artist Al Held: The Third Circle, Pan North XII, and Vorces VII.[16][17] A sculpture by Alexander Calder, called WTC Stabile (also known by other names, The Cockeyed Propeller and Three Wings) was on a plaza in front of the building.[18]

Tenants

The position of Building 7 in relation to the other WTC buildings before September 11, 2001.

In June 1986, before construction was completed, Silverstein signed Drexel Burnham Lambert as a tenant to lease the entire 7 World Trade Center building for $3 billion over a term of 30 years.[19] In December 1986, after the Boesky insider-trading scandal, Drexel Burnham Lambert canceled the lease leaving Silverstein to find other tenants.[20] Spicer & Oppenheim agreed to lease 14 percent of the space but for more than a year, as Black Monday and other factors adversely affected the Lower Manhattan real estate market, Silverstein was unable to find tenants for the remaining space. By April 1988, Silverstein had lowered the rent and made other concessions.[21]

In November 1988, Salomon Brothers withdrew from plans to build a large new complex at Columbus Circle in Midtown and agreed to a 20-year lease for the top 19 floors of 7 World Trade Center.[22] The building was extensively renovated in 1989 to accommodate the needs of Salomon Brothers.[23] Most of three existing floors were removed as tenants continued to occupy other floors, and more than 350 tons (U.S.) of steel were added to construct three double-height trading floors. Nine diesel generators were installed on the 5th floor as part of a backup power station. "Essentially, Salomon is constructing a building within a building - and it's an occupied building, which complicates the situation," said a district manager of Silverstein Properties. The unusual task was possible, said Larry Silverstein, because it was designed to allow for "entire portions of floors to be removed without affecting the building's structural integrity, on the assumption that someone might need double-height floors."[23]

At the time of the September 11, 2001 attacks, Salomon Smith Barney was by far the largest tenant in 7 World Trade Center, occupying 1,202,900 sq ft (111,750 m2) (64 percent of the building) which included floors 28–45.[24][6] Other major tenants included ITT Hartford Insurance Group (122,590 sq ft/11,400 m2), American Express Bank International (106,117 sq ft/9,900 m2), Standard Chartered Bank (111,398 sq ft/10,350 m2), and the Securities and Exchange Commission (106,117 sq ft/9,850 m2).[24] Smaller tenants included the Internal Revenue Service Regional Council (90,430 sq ft/8,400 m2) and the United States Secret Service (85,343 sq ft/7,900 m2).[24] The smallest tenants included the New York City Office of Emergency Management, NAIC Securities, Federal Home Loan Bank, First State Management Group Inc., Provident Financial Management, and the Immigration and Naturalization Service.[24] The Department of Defense (DOD) and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) shared the 25th floor with the IRS.[6] Floors 46–47 were mechanical floors, as were the bottom six floors and part of the seventh floor.[6][25]

A progress report was released in June 2004, outlining NIST's working hypothesis.[39][3] The hypothesis, which was reiterated in a June 2007 status update, is that an initial failure in a critical column occurred below the 13th floor, caused by damage from fire and/or debris from the collapse of the two main towers.

And MORE support for conspiracy, from Duane Shaw:

I would like to make a few points and suggestions regarding your use of this article as a rebuttal to the presentation of 911 truth presented by the film Zeitgeist.

The truth behind what happened on 09/11/01 is a very complex and multi-faceted sequence of events.  What has been left behind has turned out to be a plethora of  “coincidences."

People sometimes become "truthers" when they become aware of one or more of the numerous instances of what the official conspiracy apologists insist are "coincidences" and conclude that something doesn’t add up.  Unfortunately, it seems that the more one becomes aware of these coincidences the more they seem to connect together, solidly creating a rather hideous picture of what the real story actually is.

There are a good number of those who call themselves "truthers" who probably have more than one screw loose and might be seen to be barking up trees that aren't there.  I don't know if the authors of Zeitgeist fall into that category or not.   I also don't know what their academic qualifications are, if any.

I would, however, assert, that if you would really like to see the detailed data presented by relevant professionals explaining the 9/11 Truth movement’s skeptical view of the "authoritative" explanations put forth by articles such as the one you presented you might consider starting here:

http://www.ae911truth.org/

http://pilotsfor911truth.org/

http://patriotsquestion911.com/

Since your article also seemed to have a lot of  “detailed data that all hangs together” it looked to me that the difference was that you were uncomfortable with the film's perceived lack of credibility.  I am hoping that you might be more impressed by authoritative representatives of the 9/11 truth movement. (You might want to look at the 3rd web site first)

Duane

"I NEVER DIED," SAID HE": GOOD BYE TO JIMMY HEATH,EDITOR, STREETVIBES

by Steve Sunderland

Jimmy Heath, I am told, died this week at Hospice. I was reminded of the lyric from "Joe Hill" that goes, '"I never died," said he..."' Jimmy Heath will live on in the many memories of his gentleness, a light that shone from him every time we met. Gentleness is a quality of the highest level of peacemaker. Jimmy never lectured, never instructed with coercive words or actions, never held that one way was the right way. Jimmy was always skillful at opening a space in a crowded life to any who wanted to sit or stand, reminding them that their space was always there by him. He had such a powerful hold on this gentleness that high school youth and adults would realize that he was "teaching" humanness in a way that is rarely seen. Jimmy was never far away from sharing some part of his story as a plant in growth, as a learner in the process of decoding the realities he found himself in, as a citizen of the world of peace and justice, taking time and words to remind us that there were too many homeless on our streets, too many hungry, mentally ill and so many people beaten down by the culture of hatred that he had somehow survived.
The power of his gentleness was personal as well as social. I can remember our lunches with Steve Elliot at Myra's as we plotted to bring peace into the schools under the cover of photography, posters, and good story telling. Jimmy, always curious, wondered just where we were finding the energy to keep teaching and learning in schools that seem to dislike youth and fostered machine like behavior. Jimmy reminded me that we had to take the other path, although gently, almost invisibly. He would say, "The kids get it if we say it with honesty."  What a powerful reminder of the way we could grow peace in the war zones of high schools, a nudge to drop the rhetoric a level down and give the youth a chance to find their "vision" and "voices." Jimmy had seen and heard too much self righteous talk and action that led to another door-less room for teachers and students. Teaching through story and through photography sparked conversations in youth and adults about living a life of integrity and without ruthlessness. Jimmy seemed to force competitive emotions out of the room when he talked. There is his way, the gentle touch of a caring person, and there are the other ways, the top down plans, directives, grades, and fears. Listening to his story, it was easy to hear how much he loved being gentle and feeling gentleness on the part of others as the major way of teaching, learning and living.

Jimmy was also fierce about how the homeless were being mis-handled in the city, the nation and the world. His articles, news summaries, and pictures were direct and bold calls for action to protect the most vulnerable people, men, women and children of the streets and drop in shelters. Jimmy never wrote a shy word about justice. At times, his anger would flash when something or someone had burned a person or killed the spirit of a homeless person.  Yet, his eyes would never harden and his voice never revealed bitterness. Like his pictures, the anger was a call to "see" into the violence and realize that another victim was claimed by a brutal society. He seemed to be saying, although I never heard him put it in words, "How could people, people with everything, treat people with so little with so much hatred?"

I thought I saw Jimmy the other night in Wyoming at the Friendship United Methodist Church. About 100 young people had gathered in the cold to read the names of some of the homeless that died this year on the streets of Cincinnati. It was a lovely meeting, filled with wide-eyed innocence of the young as they looked at an outdoor slide-show of homeless people living on the streets, narrated by the homeless. At outdoor fire was started in a garbage can, a mike was set up, and young people came up, one after another, and read the name of the deceased. The rest of us, parents, Greater Cincinnati Coalition for the Homeless staff, Peace Villagers and ministers, all held lit candles, the wax catchers surrounding the candle inscribed with a name of a dead homeless person. From time to time, we stopped to sing some songs, read a poem, and reflect on the sadness and beauty of the event. Jimmy seemed to be in the shadows, hands surrounding his camera, watching and smiling.

I thought I saw Jimmy this weekend at Camp Joy as a group of about 40 Hughes High School students, one Hughes teacher, and staff from Bridges for a Just Community, Center for Peace Education, Know Tribe, and the Peace Village gathered for sessions on creating a leadership team to promote peace and justice back at the school. It was just the kind of group that Jimmy had visited and shared his story and pictures, making a point of reminding people that the homeless have gifts of great beauty and intelligence. He would remind them that he was once homeless, drunk, and hopeless. Now, he would quietly say, he was just a person with the gifts being shared. I am always moved by these groups and what is being said out loud and in whispers. Inner city kids do not know that they are important and really vital for the future of our city and our world. Filled with too much hate and fear, they too often turn against themselves at the drop of a muttered insult. Quickly, though, the words and actions of compassion are learned, adopted and tried. "What do you feel?," Robert Harris of Bridges, asks and asks as he pleads with them to honor their own feelings. Robert is a dangerous facilitator as he spins around the conference room in his high speed wheelchair. Slowly, he pulls out the feelings of hurt, of pride, of hope and of love that are just beneath the surface, waiting for the call to appear. Jimmy would appear in these discussions, helping through his gentle urging, the students find the first sounds of their voices of courage, their feelings of power and justice, and their respect for themselves. Somehow, Jimmy would snap just the right picture of a person crossing over to compassion, perhaps one eye looking back to what was known.

I went out on the porch of the conference building after my discussion and saw the one teacher on a bench, sitting in the cold, crying. "What's happening?," I asked thinking that there was bad news coming to her via her cell-phone. " I am the only damn teacher here," she said, not bothering to wipe her tears away. "What the hell is going on in my school? Why have the teachers given up on these kids, these great kids? I am so angry!" We held hands and hearts, sitting in weepy silence. I thought I saw Jimmy coming over to us, to remind us that we really had done a great job, that we couldn't really know how much good we had done. Jimmy would have reminded us that our tears were signs of healthy anger, signals that justice denied to youth is worthy of a lot of tears and actions. He'd have told us a story about Buddy Gray, his mentor, who refused to give up on any homeless person and how he was "saved" by Buddy. Somehow, Jimmy's words would have helped us get up and get back inside. There is work to be done.

I DREAMED I SAW JIMMY HEATH LAST NIGHT,
        ALIVE AS HE COULD BE.
"BUT JIMMY," SAYS I, "YOU'RE 3 DAYS DEAD."
            "I NEVER DIED," SAID HE.
              "I NEVER DIED," SAID HE.

AND STANDING THERE AS BIG AS LIFE
              AND SMILING WITH HIS EYES
SAID JIMMY: "THERE'S NO TIME TO MOURN,
               GO OUT AND ORGANIZE."
             GO OUT AND ORGANIZE."
