100th Cincinnati Thanksgiving Day Race [Thursday 26 November 26 @ 9 AM]: This 100th Thanksgiving Day 10k (6.2 mile) run/walk is the real deal. Cincinnati is one of the few cities in the country who can brag about a 100 year old race, it is the oldest road race of any kind in the Midwest & the 6th oldest race in America, behind only the Boston Marathon & a handful of other events, according to Runner's World Magazine. In addition to being able to participate in this century exercise with family, friends,and lots of happy, healthy and sweaty strangers, participants will get a 100th birthday limited edition poster for only $5 & a commemorative high-tech, long sleeve t-shirt. Macy's Light Up the Square [Friday 27 November @ 6 PM]: The annual lighting of the holiday tree on Fountain Square, a day-after Thanksgiving tradition. This year's tree is 55-feet tall with the red Macy's 5-foot tall star & 20,000 lights. Q102's Jeff Thomas & News 5's Sheree Paolello host the festivities, with popular local novelty band Naked Karate Girls providing live music throughout the evening. Mayor Mark Mallory & Union, KY native & actor Josh Hutcherson (Bridge to Terabithia) will switch on the lights. The evening ends with fireworks & a visit from Santa. Sideways Stories from Wayside School [Saturday 28 November thru Saturday 26 December]: There was a slight error in the construction of Wayside School. Instead of 30 classrooms side by side, it was built one classroom on top of another, 30 stories high, except the 19th floor, which may have been forgotten. Join the school's students for a series of strange encounters & skewed adventures. Meet the meanest teacher in the school's history, a magic blackboard, talking pigtails, among other oddities. Indonesian & Mozambican Films: CWC Global Cinema Series [Sunday 29 November & Tuesday 1 December]: The Indonesia "The Photograph" & Mozambican "Sleepwalking Land" are the final films in CWC's global cinema series. In "The Photograph," Sita is a beautiful, spirited chanteuse & call girl who sends her earnings to her daughter & ailing grandmother. She convinces an elderly photographer to rent her a room to start a new life in this touching drama infused with humor & textures of life. "Sleepwalking Land" takes place in the midst of Mozambique's devastating civil war. An orphaned refugee wanders the countryside in search of his mother, his only companions are an elderly storyteller & dead man's diary which, together, lead him on a magical, macabre journey across the harsh landscape. Team Registration for 2010 Fountain Square Broomball League [thru Tuesday 1 December @ 5 PM]: This 4th season of Broomball on Fountain Square will be 6 weeks, beginning Monday 4 January. Games are played on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday evenings. New: a weekend league for beginners play on Saturday mornings starting 9 January. Championship games will be played for Advanced & Beginner leagues on Wednesday 17 February & for Weekenders on Saturday 20 February. Anyone over 17 can play. 40 teams will include 16 Advanced, 16 Beginner & 8 Weekend. Teams can include up to 12 players; six players are on the ice including at least 3 women. Teams will be selected by lottery & notified by 4 December. Broomball combines elements of soccer & hockey. Players wear gym shoes & use sticks with a small, broom-shaped head to pass the ball & score goals. Don't want to play? It's free to watch. Miami University Italian Cinema Series 2009 [Tuesdays thru 8 December @ 7:30 PM]: See some of the essential Italian film classics accompanied by discussion, led by Professor Sante Matteo, who curated & presents the series in conjunction with the Italian cinema course he teaches at Miami University. Miami University French Cinema Series 2009 [Tuesdays thru 8 December @ 5:30 PM]: Last week we featured the Italian film series (now listed under Ongoing TSTs). Now Miami U. unveils their French Cinema Series. The screenings are accompanied by discussion, led by Professor Elisabeth Hodges, who curated & presents the series in conjunction with FRE/FST 366, which she teaches at Miami University.
