Environmental Justice Ordinance being attacked!
Dear all,

There is a motion on the Council calendar scheduled for VOTE TODAY (Thursday) to delay EJ indefinitely.

Berding is still working, evidently as one of his highest priorities legislative priorities early in the new term to kill EJ.

The Motion continues the Chamber of Commerce lobbying effort.   It would delay EJ's implementation until there were 5 votes to bring it back while concurrently sponsoring a "free" piece politicized economic rhetoric as"economic analysis" to provide Winburn enough cover so that he would never have to provide that 5th vote.

PLease call your Council Members and tell them EJ needs to go into effect as planned, and that if the City Manager needs $110,000 for it he can find it or ask Council for it.

Thank you & Sincerely,

League of Women Voters call to action on Health Care Reform

The Senate and the House of Representatives have both passed health care reform legislation.  But a final bill is not yet ready to go to the President.
This is a critical time to urge your Representative and Senators, as well as the President, to pass comprehensive health care reform that will extend coverage to tens of millions of uninsured Americans.  Final legislation should include a strong public insurance option and should not discriminate on the basis of gender.

Take action today and call your Senators and Representative at 202-224-3121 or 202-225-3121 to reach the Capitol switchboard.  Call the White House at 202-456-1414 or 202-456-1111.

It is essential that the final version of this legislation moves health care in the right direction.  It must extend coverage to the uninsured and provide funding for those who cannot afford it.  The public insurance option passed by the House will accomplish these goals.

Congress is poised for a critical vote.  We cannot afford to do nothing.  If comprehensive and effective health care legislation is not passed, more Americans will lose coverage, endangering both our economy and our health.

Make your voice heard with those of other activists around the country. Ask your friends, family and other League members to call as well!

TAKE ACTION

1. Call the Capitol Hill switchboard at 202-224-3121 or 202-225-3121 and ask for your Senators or Representative.  Tell your leaders in Congress that they must pass comprehensive health care reform legislation.

2.  Call the White House at 202-456-1414 or 202-456-1111 and ask the President to push for comprehensive health care reform including the public option.

3. Send this alert to other concerned citizens - your grassroots network, your friends and coworkers. Encourage them to contact their elected leaders.

Special Presenter at Salon Wed. 20 Jan

I urge you to come to the Salon on Wed. 20 Jan and meet Till Schilling, let him teach you the EFT technique right here at the table.  You may want to enroll in the workshop that will be held in March here at the Lloyd House if we get at least 6 enrollees.
    This guy is neat!

DEA Bentley Davis speaks:

Though it is not directly political, like many of you, I am distracted and grieving over the disaster in Haiti.  If you plan on giving to help the victims, I urge you to go to GuideStar or CharityNavigator and pick organizations where the money will actually get to the people instead of fundraising and management.  It is also better to work with organizations that already have a presence in the area – as they will stay to help with redevelopment.   Personally, I am a fan of Oxfam and Doctors without Borders for the large organizations.  On a smaller scale, I recommend MADRE and Dr. Farmer’s Partners in Health.  My list is certainly not exhaustive and there are many other great organizations out there.

Another international note is the proposed law in Uganda that will make homosexuality a crime punishable by prison or death!  The Human Rights Campaign and other organizations are urging people to ask their representatives (Driehaus) to pressure Uganda to protect all of their citizens.

P.S.
I forgot to add that on January 20, at 6:30 (yes, it conflicts with the Salon), there will be a forum featuring the Democratic candidates for US Senate, Jennifer Brunner and Lee Fisher.  It will be held at the 20th Century Theater on Madison Rd. in Oakley.  It promises to be an interesting night and I would recommend attending to see where the candidates stand on issues important to you.  It is worth noting that Fisher is refusing to appear on the stage at the same time as Brunner.

The MAK - The Maketewah Arts Konsortium - is hosting two Cincinnati Earth Institute discussion courses at McKie - Northside's Community Center, 1655 Chase Ave. This is during our Wednesday night OPAN (Our Plants Are Native) restoration ecology group time, so those attending will have the advantage of such a wisdom bank.

The first registration deadline is January 20th, 2010

Discovering a Sense of Place begins January 27th - 7 weeks (Reg. by 1/20/2010)
Deep Ecology - Reconnecting with Earth begins March 24 - 6 weeks (Reg. by 3/17/2010)
McKie fee is waved in January and February this year - $25; CEI Books are $20.

We wish to support our culture growing more native in arts - writing, poetry, and peace and justice, etc.
Participants are also welcome to help us process seed and manage native nursery work, or work on MAK art projects during class.
We may hold discussions on field trips on some days or at other locations of collaborators in The Nati Going Native.

Register by one week ahead - to order books.

Mark your calendars now for another event weekend, in early March -

SOS - Sowing Our Seed, and Restoring Our Sacred Web – March 5, 6 & 7th , 2010

Friday night, at 7 p.m. - A Vigil for Gnadenhutten - our losses and gifts.
Our vigil will begin at City Hall, down town Cincinnati, proceed with dedications through Piatt Park – our first park and a market - by our courthouse and finish at Fountain Square. Bring candles, glow sticks or flashlights - especially if raining. Dress for the weather. A peaceful, pro-active vigil - feel free to decorate clothing but please no signs.

Saturday Morning, 9 a.m.– Planting With The Harvest in Mind, Heart and Soul –
A ritual retreat to life of place to planet. We will discern and set our intentions for our growing season, for our work in our fields of focus of our life, also community and home. We will finish about dinnertime. Bring a clay pot to decorate, water-based paint, pallet and brushes, with dry soil and seed (native preferred), and two sheets of paper in a paper bag, and a pencil or pen. Meals will be potluck, or off site. Donations for the venue appreciated. Please register by February 28th. Space limited. Location to be announced.

On Sunday, some plan to join the morning service at the Moravian Church in Gnadenhutten, followed by a visit to the community’s cemeteries – especially to the mound for those of the Gnadenhutten Massacre in March of 1782. We welcome you share with us in other fellowships and services - to honor losses and heritage, to welcome renewed life to be rooted and harmonized in the long journey and fabric of place.

Immigration Reform Rally Jan 16
Cincinnati Interfaith Workers Center is working with local unions, community and religious organizations and Reform America in fighting for real immigration reform next year. With the recent Ohio DMV decision to deny vehicle registration to immigrants without social security numbers it is now important than ever that we work together for the legalization of the millions of immigrants in our country.
Attached is a flyer for the immigration reform rally on January 16. Please distribute this flyer wherever you can. We plan to have an 1,000 to 1500 people at the Hartwell Center at 2 PM on January 16th. We will have personal stories from immigrants, and speakers representing religious, union and community perspectives on immigration reform and politicians who support this effort (perhaps Luis Guitterez).

We see this as a just kick off of a campaign to bring real reform to our immigration laws
.

As of this date we are planning to have nine buses  to pick up at different points in our area those we can’t drive to the location and those immigrants who are now too afraid to drive.  The points of the pickups are depicted in the flye
r.

Any questions on our rally please call our office (513) 621-5991 or Su Casa (513) 621-5

Drum Building Workshop with Rich Spirit Borthwick Feb 5, Fri, Feb 6, Feb 11

Thanks for your interest in building a  professional qulity Ashiko drum. Here is the link to my website that explains the process a bit.
www.richspiritdrums.com                    select Build your drum with Rich Spirit

Friday Night :  Show up about 5pm, choose our staves and glue them together. We then wrap our rings and prep heads if time allows.

Saturday :  We start at 9am to plane , sand, file and oil our shell 3 times. Finish wrapping rings and prep ours hides for the heading process.

When all the parts are ready we head the drum.

Then it takes about 4 days for the head to dry and stiffen-up, At this time we will pull the drum tight some and remove the hair over the playing surface. Then we tighten the drum fully up so as to get a good sharp tone near the edge. I say a tuned drum plays itself as it is so much easier to play a tuned drum. If time allows I will demonstrate some drum rythms and techniques and we can play some.

Please let others that might be interested know about this empowering experience.

As the flier states this will be the last workshop at 2009 prices, $150 for the 20" tall drum; $210 for the 24" tall drum; and $300 for the 30" tall drum.

All wood is recycled from bed boards, benches, table tops, palets and other woodshop castoffs ect.

Please let me know if you do not want to recieve future info.
