FWIW, I added the following statement to my petition:
It's not just the anti-abortion or anti-privacy positions, or his failure to respect individual rights; he is of exactly the same background as all the others on the court. Of all the branches of government, we need diversity on the Supreme Court, and that means more than just ethnic or gender diversity. Let's have a nominee, for a change, who's not coming from the Appellate bench, who's not had a perfectly standard superstar legal career, who is representing a point of view acquired in other ways. This Alito, in every regard, is a terrible choice (although he may be bright and a decent person). Please do everything in your power, up to and including shutting Congress down, to reject this nomination.

Presence describes our capacity for being awake and aware within our

Martin Luther King Day Celebration at Music Hall, noon, 16 January.
Huge chorale of multi cultural singers under direction of Cathy Roma and Todd O'Neal. 100 children (from all rainbow of different communities in the city) singing with on three numbers. Keynote address by the most eloquent Bp. E. Lynne Brown of the 1st District C.M.E. Church. Courtis Fuller as M.C. Mark Mallor to bring brief greetings. I always sing in the chorale and it is a blast, having rehearsals every two weeks during the fall, but the celebration on MLK Day is a lift off! Imagine singing "We shall overcome" and "Lift Every Voice" with 2,000 people in Music Hall. Over by 2:00 pm. Come. It's free, but a collection plate is passed to fund the next year's overhead. All participants are volunteers. ellen
And, if you really want to get in the King spirit, come first to the outdoors traditional civil rights march, at 11:15, this year starting at Washington Park between Race and Elm at 13th st. opposite Music Hall. Brief greetings at the gazebo, then m arch down Race to Central Parkway, up behind Music Hall, around to front door of Music Hall on Elm.
Want to do it up brown? Attend the Dreamkeepers Breakfast, at Music Hall ballroom starting 8 am, $30, the principal fund raiser for the Arts Consortium. This year the Arts Consortium has moved from Lynn st. to the Union Terminal building, continuing their fine work bringing music, dance, visual arts, drumming, etc. with an African slant to children in the community. This is a primo black community event, with all the movers and shakers, entertainment, speeches, awards to several prominent leaders given. Show your support. Order tickets: 381-0645. As founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center, Dees uses the law like a sword in his battle against prejudice and hatred. In 1994, Morris Dees warned the U.S. Attorney General that radical militias were planning domestic terrorist strikes, six months later, the Oklahoma City Bombing was tied to one such group. In the 1980¹s and 90¹s, he bankrupted the K.K.K. and neo-Nazi groups with a series of historic lawsuits. Dee¹s is author of such books as Gathering Storm: America¹s Militia Threat, A Dangerous Neo-Nazi, is the subject of the television movie Line of Fire and was portrayed in the feature film Ghosts of the Mississippi Free Admission. This comprehensive program will introduce the student to Nei Gong and Wei Gong Qigong techniques for whole body health. No Experience is necessary. Great for beginners or those experienced in Qigong or Tai Chi. Students will participate in Qi energetics including Tao Yin, Tendon Changing, Zham Zhong , Waving Body and Qi circulation Meditation.
Richard Leirer is one of the most experienced and accomplished Qi Gong teachers in the US. The Chinese term Qi Gong means mastery of energy, and Richard Leirer is truly an American Qi Gong master. One of the first Americans to study Qi Gong healing, with over 30 years study with major Chinese Masters.
Scientists with the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Foundation in studies on Qi Gong masters found that Richard Leirer could produce healing brain patterns at will.
Richard was accepted as a student with Masters Huang Tseng Yue, Lee Henn, Hao Tien You, TaiJi Grand Master Hu Wei Yu and follows the lineage of Qigong Grand Master Zhong Hong Bao. He has been officially recognized as a Master by the Chinese Qi Gong Society of Cleveland for his excellence in Nei Gong (Taoist inner alchemy meditation techniques). He was the founding vice president of the National Qi Gong Association (NQA) and has built a consensus of national standards in Qi Gong. He has created and maintains a Qi Gong program for pain management at the world famous Cleveland Clinic Hospital, and has conducted classes in most of the hospitals in the Greater Cleveland Ohio area..

buddha dharma study group
New group formed at Lloyd House to study the Buddhist scriptures from the original (most ancient) Pali texts.
Saturday mornings 9:30 - 11:00 (We will skip New Year's Eve, 12/31. Next session will be Jan. 7).
We will be slowly working our way through "In the Buddha's Words", translated and with introductions by Bikhu Bodhi
with foreward by the Dalai Lama.
This is a tasty little group. We will give you a copy of the book. Come join us!
Format:
9:30, arrive, remove shoes, come up to the (beautifl) third floor meditation room.
9:45: meditation for ten minutes
9:50: the leader for the week reads the short passage, next in sequence. Then the leader shares her/his reactions and thoughts. Then we go around the circle, everyone sharing or passing. No interruptions. After everyone who wants has given their response, we have open discussion until 11:00.
11:00: tea in the dinning room.
We have a web forum. Richard Blumberg has been studying this material for years. I love to listen to him explain it. He is the guy who gave that excellent introduction to Buddhism last year at the salon.
I have been meditating for decades, but had never studied the sutras. This is a treat! ellen
