Weekly 5/31/07 - 5

Next Week, 6 June, we will have a special presentation by the Salon’s Swami, Himavat Ishaya. He is a midwesterner (he’ll tell you about changing his name) and his main profession is Teacher of Enlightenment (my term). I believe his lineage is vaguely Hindu. Himavat is an extremely loveable guy, profoundly sincere, highly entertaining. He is going to talk about his journey and about the method he teaches. Should be a rousing good time. (see excerpt from Himavat’s writing in Articles section.)

beware of inevitable misunderstandings and misrepresentations. E.B.)

PRESENTATION BY LLEE SIVITZ ON JUICE PLUS AND YOUR NUTRITION

(Llee opened by expressing pleasure at the warm spirit in the room at our Salon.)

Reasons for poor health: lousy diet, little exercise, not enough water, stress, environmental pollutions, attitude of treatment rather than prevention.

Faygo orange drink: nutrition facts. 20 teaspoons sugar . sugar suppresses immune system. Lasts 6 hours.
Ave. American child eats ¾ lb / day or 5 lb/week. Adults eat ¾ that amount!
Trans Fat:
A man made fat. Crisco, 1911. Takes 100 days for it to go thru your body. It gloms onto things, .. This is banned in Europe, also in NY.
Labels can say “0 trans fat per serving” but if ingredients have hydrogenated oil, that’s trans fat. FDA can let them get away with saying 0 trans fat by having small serving size.

If you eat 1 – 2 gm. Trans fat per day you increase your risk of heart attack by 20% that day.

There are trans fats in all sorts of surprising foods, like Seasoned Salt.

In Dec. 2006 I bought a Happy Meal. It has been on the floor of my office since then. It looks today the same as it did when new. No mould.

Here is an apple I bought a week ago. It starting to get a little brown spot. If it doesn’t rot or sprout, throw it out!

WATER:
Take weight in lbs, divide by 2, that’s the no. oz of water you should drink in a day. (a little over 2 quarts.)
In China, the physician is fired if someone gets sick. They get paid if family is well.
Quote: “we are not a vitamin deficient n ation. We are a whole food deficient nation.” We need whole food nutrition.

Apple: 400 micro nutrients in an apple. So vitamin supplements don’t supply all that.
Amer. Cancer Soc poster talks about fruits and veg. (passes out mag. Articles on diet. )
All say “fruits and vegetables”. Why?
Anti-oxidants. Fresh produce is only food containing them.
Web: www.health.gov/dietaryguidelines : 9 servings/day fruits, veg.
Movie “body guard” with Whitney Hueston who is being stalked. Anti oxidants are like Kevin Kostner taking the bullet.

WHAT I AM DOING ABOUT THIS FOR MYSELF
Food is my body’s medicine, key to good health. But I can’t get those 9 – 13 servings. Juice Plus: 17 raw, fresh fr. And veg. in a capsule. The most researched nutritional product in the world. Shown to balance immune system, promote cardiovascular health. I take daily for 10 years. Awesome health.
Studies in J. of Nutrition.
Dr. Wm. Sears, pediatrician is on board. If parent takes Juice Plus, the child gets it free.
lleesivitz@hotmail.com

$1.33/day. About $40/month.
“virtual franchise”, not pyramid.

Juice plus is the whole food with the water, salt, sugar removed. Vitamins are not.
It is live food. Some people say, “I’d rather eat veg. and fruits directly.” Problem is most people don’t. Even if they intend.
Has not been heated. Naturally dehydrated.
(organic?) no, as much as they can.

Also avail: meal replacement product for weight control.
Many of my clients who are extremely health conscious still take Juice Plus.
I have noticed that taking Juice plus makes me have increased appetite for fruits and vegetables. Also many people have a new desire for exercise.

(Dallas) I have friends who do this… they are very healthy.
If someone wants to start I can give you a 5 day free supply. I also have CDs, brochures.
During that five days they ship to you.

If you find 7 people who go on Juice Plus, this will pay for your product. You have a party, I’ll make a presentation.

Cost Analysis: cost more to buy all those fruits and vegetables. Aprox. $16/day.

(What is the process for removing the sugar?) I don’t know what the process is.

Dr. Santello originated … started with raw food juicing but found that people didn’t continue to use their juicers.

Shari: how are the sugars removed.
Charles: do they use the super critical extraction process.
Llee: I will find out.
Guy: why do you refer to yourself as a distributor?
Llee: the co. has been around 35 years. I joined in ’94, water and air filtration products. Now we are representatives, not really distributors.
(do you take vitamins also?) No. I get my minerals from my food and juice plus.
You can order on my website: http://juiceplus.com/+ls02753

In Northside: Dharma Talk and pot luck This Sunday – June 3rd

Meredith Jones, a newer member of our Sangha, will give the Dharma talk on June 3
rd. Her topic is “A Beginner’s Observations”. Meredith will share why she meditates and what things help her to be mindful. All of us will be able to empathize because we have all been beginners at one time or another, and Suzuki Roshi tells us to always sit with “beginner’s mind.”

We welcome regular sitters, newcomers, family and friends to attend the talk (whether or not you attend the entire morning service).

Services will begin at the regular time, 10 am. The sitting and walking periods will be a little shorter than usual and the service itself will be over at 11 am. That’s when the Dharma talk begins.

If you or someone you know would like to attend only the talk, arrive at 10:55. A greeter will meet those arriving then, and make sure they find a comfortable seat.

The dharma talk and subsequent dharma discussion will last about 30 minutes, ending at around 11:30. There will be a potluck at that time. Stay with us for good food and good conversation.
Hope you can make it.

Subject: Help stop summer gas price gouging

(This is from
MoveOn.org. I love them. Very sane. Smart. Reliably well informed. Ellen)

Hi,

Can you face another summer where a day trip to the lake or the beach costs you an arm and a leg? It's shaping up to be just that if we don't ask Congress to stand up to Big Oil now.

But there is a bill in the House this week that could make gas price gouging a federal crime, so we don't pay more while the oil companies rake in record profits. I signed a petition to urge my representative to pass this bill this week -- can you join me at the link below?

Thanks!

They evoke a sense of one's own physicality, in a completely different way than larger works. Small works are intimate; inviting approach & inspection. The Great Baking Powder War [Saturday 9 June @ 10 AM]: From 1890 to 1925 numerous law suits were filed over the supposed safety of baking powder made using sodium aluminum sulfate or SAS. The story of these suits forms a prototype for similar law suits today over the safety of various consumer products & raises interesting issues concerning the abuse of science, the inherent conflict between scientific versus legal proof, & the questionable motives which sometimes underlie such legal activism. Au Hasard Balthazar [Tuesday-Wednesday 12-13 June @ 7 PM]: Often praised as one of the greatest films ever made, but long unavailable in the U.S., Au Hasard Balthazar combines spiritual allegory with a naturalistic, austere, & minimalist aesthetic style. The film tells the story of Marie, an unlucky farm girl, & her beloved donkey Balthazar. Years pass, the pair become separated, & the now-teenaged Marie drifts into increasingly destructive situations, while Balthazar moves from owner to owner. But "this is the story of a donkey in somewhat the way that Moby Dick is about a whale." The film traces both their fates as they live a parallel existence. Marie & Balthazar become martyrs, eventually taking on the sins of others & finding transcendence in the process. In a body of work known for its purity & transcendence, Au Hasard Balthazar is perhaps the most wrenching & astute of Bresson's visions. Post-film discussion with Paul Clark (Cincinnati Enquirer Arts & Entertainment Editor) & Mendle Adams (Pastor of St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Pleasant Ridge). France, 1966, Black & White, 95 minutes. French with English subtitles. New print & new subtitles. Not rated, suggest nominal PG-13 for occasional violence. Tickets are $8, or $6 for Art Museum members & students with valid ID. Presented by Cincinnati World Cinema. At Fath Auditorium, Cincinnati Art Museum, 953 Eden Park Drive, Mt. Adams, Cincinnati OH 45202. More info, tix, trailer @ 859.781.8151, worldcinema@fuse.net, & www.cincyworldcinema.org.

Business As Unusual: Heroes of the Holocaust [thru July 29]: This exhibition tells the story of Oskar Schindler & his actions to protect Jews during the Holocaust which have earned him a special place among honored rescuers. Collecting a Legacy: The Bernard Kinsey Collection [thru June 3]: This exhibition offers a roadmap to the cultural journey & transformation experienced by African American art collectors as they embrace & acquire art & artifacts. Within the context of their own history & the past that speaks to them, we discover how the Kinseys are changed & nurtured by what they chose to collect. Ranging from painful-to-see slave owner’s documents, to brilliantly fiery expressions in sculpture, to private glimpses into thoughts of the ancestors, the Kinsey Collection reflects a rich cultural heritage which they have been driven to capture, inspire & sustain for future generations. Please tell your rep to support HB 148!

Do you want the state telling you what type of health care you can access? Do you want the ability to choose your own health care? TELL YOUR STATE REPRESENTATIVE!

It is imperative that your representative know that our bill is supported by citizens in their district. Without district support, most members will not support this bill!

We are encountering opposition from within OUR OWN MOVEMENT from people who are well intentioned but do not have a good understanding about how the legislative process works! Our opposition has sent HUNDREDS of form letters. WE NEED WRITE MORE THAN THEY DO!

You can write to your state representative by simply clicking the link below and following the instructions.? Feel free to personalize the letter!
http://ga4.org/campaign/OH_HB148

If every member of OHFC got 5 friends to join and write to their legislators- we can pass this bill!

Thank you for all you do to make health freedom a reality!

Best Regards,
Carrie

Memorial planned for comedian
BY JENNIFER BAKER | JBAKER@ENQUIRER.COM
CLIFTON - Family and friends are gathering photos and performance tapes for a June 3 memorial here of a local stand-up comedian who died earlier this month in a Florida bicycle accident.

Scott Dominion, 42, died May 8, a day after a sports utility vehicle hit him as he rode his bike in Alachua, Fla., said one of his longtime friends, Mary Ann Lederer.

The vegan and environmentalist was known for Healthy Humor, his professional touring comedy show of all-vegetarian comedians. The show has been performed in Chicago, Louisville, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Sarasota, and at the World Vegetarian Congress in Toronto, according to EarthSave's website.

OAS_AD('ArticleFlex_1'); Dominion also performed with Robin Williams, Angela Lansbury, Second City and appeared on ABC's "America's Funniest People," HBO Comedy Channel and National Public Radio.

"He was so extraordinary," said Lederer, 65, of North Fairmount. "He just lightened everything for people. He didn't try to steal the attention, just lighten the moment."

While he spent most of his time on the road working in shows and comedy clubs, he spent three months of the year - November, December and January - in Cincinnati. He grew up in Price Hill and graduated from School For Creative & Performing Arts, she said.
He performed locally in places such as Southgate House in Newport. He also taught yoga at Lloyd House, 3901 Clifton Ave., Clifton, <http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=3901+clifton+avenue+cincinnati+ohio+%28Clifton+House%29&sll=39.157902,-84.517844&sspn=0.007288,0.009441&ie=UTF8&ll=39.157902,-84.517844&spn=0.007288,0.009441&z=16&iwloc=addr&o> which will host his 4 p.m. memorial.

The invitation to his memorial invites guests to bring a vegan dish and thoughts to share.

"In Scott's own words: "nudist, Buddhist, raw foodist," the invitations read.

Evan Bukey on Memorial Day:

Sad that this day has been trivialized. In the late 40s it was a somber
day in our neighborhood. I can well recall tributes to my father's friends
who were killed or tortured to death in the Phillipines, to Tom and Sally
Roy's father who fell at the Bulge, to those who died at Iwo Jima or
liberated the Nazi camps.

Himavat Teaches Enlightenment

: ....
.... If you want a new experience, you will need to make a new choice. The tools I teach, that is, the Enlivening Techniques, are based in the ancient Vedic tradition of Enlightenment. One hundred per cent of the thousands of people I have taught over the last ten years have had a new experience. The process of Enlightenment is just that: a process. People notice something, even if difficult to describe, every time they begin to use the tools of the Enlivening Techniques.
The tools are simple thoughts you introduce into your thought stream. The experience, even if hard to describe, is real, for everyone. It gets easier to describe over time.
And with practice. Stresses are healed. In the healing process, discomfort sometimes shows up. I offer FREE Introductory Lectures at Tourmaline Life Center, in Blue Ash, Cinci, every two weeks. Come, ask questions. Challenge the old paradigm: entertain a new possibility. The testimonials of those people, here in Cinci, who are practicing the techniques are often most enlightening.

On Safety of Nuclear Power
By Ivan Maldonado, U.C Nuclear Engineering Prof.

(Ivan also has written in rebuttal of the charges by Jeffrey Sea and Jeanette Raichyk that his testimony at the Piketon hearing was swayed by involvement with the DOE- U.S. Department of energy— and I would like to print them later, but the following remarks are of particular interest to me now. ellen)
Dear Ellen,

I believe that nuclear power in the Western World is safe and has historically and consistently proven to be safer than all other large-scale "base load" type of energy productions (1000 MW-electric per plant). Some will argue that Three Mile Island was a nuclear disaster, however, I believe that it was really mostly a "financial disaster" because it actually proved that containment buildings (1 meter thick steel lined dome over the reactor) protect the public from a "meltdown." Chernobyl, on the other hand, was a design that broke many of the Western-world practices, among them a lack of a containment building, and its outcome was surely a wake up call for everyone; engineers and public alike, especially in that part of the world.

The US nuclear power program, in particular, has shown an incredible safety record since TMI. Their efficiency has basically increased by 30% (plant capacity/availability factors went from 60% to 90% in the past 30 years), a power output equivalent to about 30 nuclear power plants that never had to be built. However, they cannot get any more efficient than they are and another 30 potential plant orders are looming in the horizon (about 30% increase from 103 operating nuclear power plants today in the US). Investors, who make these things happen (at 3 to 5 billion per plant), and operators (those who run the plants) are more comfortable with the thought of profitably producing energy, so they will most likely follow through.

Unfortunately, there is a human price we pay to live the modern lives we lead. I read in the paper just yesterday about 38 or so coal plant workers who died in a coal mine accident (not too long after the West Virginia and other similar type accidents). Likewise, the millions of tons of NOx and SOx pollutants being tossed in the air daily by fossil fueled plants in an irretrievable from are basically being collected in our lungs as "filters." Nobody really knows the long term effects of all this, and also global warming is another important aspect to consider.

Nuclear waste is a scary and toxic thought, as are many chemicals handled for so many other modern activities that support our comfortable lifestyle. However, nuclear waste is a byproduct (inevitable with any form of energy generation) that we actually have physical control over. We know where it is, we can monitor and manage. The science is there to protect the public (spent nuclear fuel has been sitting at nuclear power plant spent fuel pools for 30, 40, and more years). So, in my opinion, would we rather blow the byproducts into the air, or have them somewhere where we can physically contain it and protect it.

The GNEP idea revolves around recycling some of the components in nuclear waste, and minimizing the volume and toxicity of the waste, that is what I think. However, it is obvious that there are many other political and financial interests involved. There is a price we must pay to generate energy, no free lunch. I think nuclear power gives us an option to perhaps invest our money and brains to deal with the waste, whereas fossil fuels take away that option and the sickness, disease, and global warming associated with it will just keep getting worse.

One other interesting consideration is the fact that about 80 nuclear reactors run the submarines, aircraft carriers and destroyers that protect our country. They've been doing this safely for nearly 50 years.

I believe the experience (good and bad) acquired over the past 50 years with nuclear power has led the US and other Western countries to a safe and clean(er) way to generate very large amounts of electrical energy. Plants and systems are getting better and safer, and more new ideas for even safer designs are being studied, including nuclear fusion.

I think you just have to look at the record and you might agree.

Have a great summer, too. Incidentally, UC is phasing out nuclear engineering, for the time being, perhaps permanently. I'm the only untenured nuclear engineering professor at UC, therefore, I've had to find myself another job and will be joining the University of Tennessee in the fall. I didn't expect to have to do this, but that's the way things played out. Luckily, I've found a very nice opportunity from which to continue my work and mission.

Regards,

-Ivan

MOVIES... From Alan Scheidt (salonista recently moved to Phoenix)

Hope all of you have seen "The Lives of Others" (one of the 25 best movies I've ever seen) and the Alzheimer's-related flick "Away from Her", a film by, about and for grown-ups. A profounf film, not at all a "disease-of-the-week" TV movie--the best film of 2007 so far.

My highlights so far--hearing the great Dawn Upshaw sing at the STUNNING Disney Concert Hall in LA and seeing the sunrise over the Grand Canyon--there are simply no words...except what a 2 1/2 year old Australian boy said: "It's like going to the end of the earth." Met wonderful Aussie, Indian, (ie: from India), and Asian people while at the Grand Canyon. Curiously, virtually no black people--just like when I attend the arts whether it's in Cincy, Phoenix or LA. What gives? There must be some sort of sociological discussion there...

Hope you are well,
Alan Scheidt
