SECTION ONE: TABLE NOTES

SECTION ONE:  Table Notes
(once again I forgot to take the photo until everyone was leaving, but here's who was left:  Mr. G., Bentley, Carolyn, Vlasta, Dennis, Mira, Viddle, Lauren.)

At the Table:
Mr. G., Bentley Davis, Carolhn Clark, Byron Moody, Dennis Kinsley, Vlasta Molak, Viddle, Lauren Hanisian, Marilyn Gale, Mira Rodwan, Sophia Yarden, Julia Yarden

ELECTION WRAP UP
school levies in Warren Co failed for the 5th time.  So the State has to take it over.
School levies passed in Wyoming, Norwood,

Suryayalamchili "chili"won and will be running against Jean Schmidt for Ohio II rep.  Very bright 28 year old. V energetic.  Defeated Kirkorian with his five staffers.  Kirkorian had said Chili couldn't win with that name.  Then denied it and called them a liar.

Third frontier issue passed
Casino move passed.

Jennifer Brunner lost to Lee Fish for Dem nominee to senate.  She did carry SW Ohio, and NW Ohio, and SE ohio, but lost Clevland, Clols.  Mahoney Va.

Tarbell won Dem nomination for County Commission.  Monzel won for the Republicans.

Juvenile Ct. judge, two dems, Tracie Hunter who runs the indep. gospel radio station, and she won against Dan Donnelan.  Is interested in alternative sentencing.

Carolyn Meg Whitman was VP at P&G for  years; then worked for EBay.  Is from Cinti.  Now running for gov of California.

Turn out: sucked.  Only 20%.

Bentley:  now we know who our candidates are for November.  Time to start working.
Governor Strickland running against Kasich, the republican, a former Congressman, former dir of Lehman Bros.  Wants to abolish Ohio income tax.  But has no proposal to take its place.
Sec'y State:  Rep Candidate John Husted will run against Mary Ellen O'Shaunessey, Dem.
Senate race: Lee Fisher Dem, vs. Rob Portman, Rep, who was Bush's encobomic advisor.
Congressional seats:  Ohio I, Steve Driehaus, dem, incumbent.  vs. former rep. Steve Chabot.  OHIO 2:  Chili vs. rep. incumbent Jean Schmidt.

I recommend everyone pick a candidate and start rooting.

BUDGET  (See below... City is holding citizen input sessions on the budget deficit... Promises to listen to what we want.  Cuts and/or tax hike necessary; we can help decide which and what and where.  See Announcements section below for where and when of the meeting on June 4.  Ellen)

Vlasta:  the city has plenty of money; it isn't true that there is a budget deficit...  46 million garage under Washington park...  They are giving over 2 million to study the street car plan which is s boondoggle.
City has money for boondoggles nbut not essential services.

Byron  when I drive around the city in the summer I see a l ot of empty swiming pools.  Pools open but no swimmers though they are open.  I think it is OK to consolidate

Format:  3 minutes.
Vlasta:  I know in Hartwell kids live at that pool.  It only cost $16 / year for any of the city rec pools.  They cut the pool season last summer, closing at Aug 16.

Bentley:  re. construction projects.  City has Capital money and General Funds money.  By city charter, those have to be kept separate.

Viddle:  Why close pools Aug 14?
Byron: because schools open right after.

Bentley:  Toledo also had a charter preventing Capital funds to be used for general fund purposes, and yesterday they voted to change that, and it passed.

I recommend thanking any candidate who loses an election; they gave up their lives to campaign.  e.g. Jennifer Brunner.

Carolyn:  I went to see Jane Heimlich at the library.  New book is all about her parents, the dancers Arthur and Catherine Murray.  She has writen about alternative medicine.  Her husb Henry Heimlich is coming out with a book all about politics and medicine, and how the Red Cross tried for 20 years to destroy him.

Vlasta:  the oil spill.  I am an expert on oil spills in marine environments, my book, ...
Only true solution is to radically reduce society's dependence on this non-renewal resource.

Viddle:  I think the street car is the most important thing to do for Cinti.   It would be so great if  you didn't have to have a car.

Mr. G.:  I read an article in NY Times that this may be Obama's Katrina; criticized for not helping more on the oil spill.  ... It might not be fixable.

Mira  it is not well known that there are hundreds, maybe thousands of oil wells in the gulf.

Dennis:  I don't believe BP is ducking their responsibiilty.  Accidents do happen.  ...
Bentley:  unlike the Massey mines, there have not been any safety inspections failed at the BP oil rig.

The Arizona immigration law; Sheriff Jones of Butler Co is proposing that Ohio have a ballot initiative.  Polls today show that more than half of Ohioans support it.

Mexico is concerned about all the illegal guns coming into their country from the U.S.

Keep on top of ballot initiatives.

Carolyn:  the Arizona immigration law.  When I lived in Europe, there was a law that everyone had to carry a passport at all times.  Switzerland.
... the Drug War in Mexico and S. America.  It is spilling over into Cal. and TX.

Ellen: several states have measure up for voting about legalizing/controling/taxing marijuana.
Bentley It is only in CAL there will be an issue in Nov; legalize marijuana, taxable, regulated.  Save money.  That's the one I am aware of.

Dennis:  (read a letter to the editor of the NYTimes.
...
Every social security recipient can have FREE membership for any YMCA or YWCA.
... "Silver sneakers program".
Jan and I are investigating volunteering with Doctors Without Borders.
...
Green policies.  Yes, we have to turn off lights... The planet is small and getting smaller.

(General Consensus):  we will all report each week the things we have done to reduce energy consumption, and be more green.

Building the Citizen Budget

For the past several months, CCR (Citizens for Civic Renewal) has been convening the Citizen Budget Coalition to develop a way to work with the City of Cincinnati Mayor, Council and Administration to include citizen input in the policy budget for 2011-2012.

(don't worry if y ou don't understand city budgets...they have worksheets and  explanations and possible cuts etc. that you can consider.  You can also download them at
http://
www.citizenscivicrenewal.org          Ellen )
The Mayor, Council and Administration have agreed that hearing from citizens would be useful.   The Coalition has designed a process where citizens will deliberate in small groups and suggest how the City of Cincinnati should balance a $50 million budget deficit.  To have your voice heard, sign-up for one of the three neighborhood meetings and/or the all-city meeting.  Space is limited, so please RSVP today.  Please pass this invitation along to your fellow citizens to assure diverse views are included.   If you have questions, contact Steve Johns, Executive Director, Citizens for Civic Renewal at 458-6736 or ccrcinn@juno.com.

I am having a blast here in my first year of teaching the Alexander Technique! Unbelievably, a full calendar since the launch of my practice in late June.
This winter I was having so much demand for my lessons that I had to stop advertising and ask some well-progressing students to drop back to twice a month instead of weekly lessons.  Now that spring is finally here I am feeling more energetic and again am daring to reach out to more folks.

Fantastic fee deal (limited time only):  First lesson free; second through 4th lessons only $10.  After that, only $40/lesson if you buy a package of 4 at a time, prepaid. *   The "real fee" is $78 per lesson.  I am interested in "turning on" as many people as possible to this wonderful learning.  Good for pain, for performance improvement in the arts, atheltics, ... And finally, good for personal development.  It has definite geriatric benefit as well.

You can read about my own experiences and find links to other sites here:

http://www.lloydhouse.com

Call and make an appointment or to discuss it with me.  513 221 1289.
........
* However,
it is my commitment to adjust fees for anyone truly wanting lessons who cannot afford even this modest fee.  Try it and see.  Ellen

Salonista Steve Sunderland: Peace Village Mother's Day Event
A CALL FOR PEACE

Dear Friends:

This year on Mother's Day May 11, 2010, at 1pm at the Clifton Fountain, corner Clifton & Ludlow,  a group of us will be meeting to read the Howe Proclamation and other relevant works of poetry, prose and song. The Rev. Frank Carpenter and a coordinating group are organizing the event. Won't you and members of your networks join us for a call for peace? All citizens for peace are welcome.

BRING A BELL TO RING.  We'll ring for 1 minute, stand in silence 5 min, ring for another minute.  Bring signs if you want.

I have learned that Mother's Day was started as a peace day by Julia Ward Howe. Here is a section of her history: "Distressed by her experience of the realities of war, determined that peace was one of the most important causes of the world and seeing war arise again in the world in the Franco-Prussian War, in 1870 she called for women to...

"Rise up and oppose war in all its forms, to come together across national lines, to recognize what we hold in common above what divides us, and commit to finding peaceful resolutions to conflicts."

This Mother's Day Proclamation was issued to gather together women in a congress of action."
In peace,

Steve
