Thursday, 4/11/13
HI Fanchon

I WANDERED lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. .... William Wordsworth With this sudden warm weather (temp today 73!) spring has sprung! Soon the maples and redbud will bloom... a precious time. Here...

April 15, 1981

For Patsy’s 40th Birthday; Ellen Bierhorst ~

We’ll have to be in heaven, Babes,

Before we sit and say it all and how it’s been;

How hard, how great, how dark, how deep.

Can’t talk about the match, still serving this game.

But can I hum this for you now?

...lovely lacy maples’ pale and feathery flowers

before the leaves...

There is a moment, this moment now,

Before the spring becomes a budding summer,

Before the leaves tip out.

The first blush of colors, pale transparent green, wispy russet,

this Other moment, when sings a strange brief melody:

The trees are shyly blooming their tender flowers.

Later, leaves will bud and come with thicker songs

Of deep Ohio clay and limestone bedrock,

Our sturdy Mother all summer long.

But now is a moment apart;

These sloping ridges and fertile beds forget their serious pregnancy,

Spring mists its early colors on the trees.

Oh sure, in lawns and gardens showy fruit trees astound the eye,

Imported ruffles on the scene.

But sweet and best are the silver harps of Maples, Oaks and Elms,

...here and there a trill of Redbud.

This time, this early solo before the overture,

With its separate fairy feeling,

This moment apart reminds me, Babes, of you.

...lovely lacy maples’ pale and feathery flowers

   before the leaves...

~ REVIEWS ~

 I am still high from the DREAM Conference with Bishop Todd O'Neal at the House of Joy in College Hill.  Thursday and Friday evenings, and all day Saturday last weekend we had roughly 60 participants--youth, young kids, adults, black and white taking workshops in drama, mime, dance, African drumming, studio recording technique, creative writing, collage and painting, and Gospel Choir.

I am amazed at the talent the Bishop assembled -- volunteers from Arizona, California, Massachusetts, Indiana, as well as locals who came when called.  Last night, for the finale, we performed... everybody presenting what they learned in their workshops.  It was a blow-the-roof-off evening.  So much good-hearted energy, gathered there for the love of Todd, his love of people and especially kids.  Martha Dycus composes Gospel music and directs and sings solo... Such spiritual power!  Rev. Nathan Best does all those things as well, and Rev. Whittaker of Corinthian Baptist in Avondale was the most eloquent choral director I've ever seen or sung with.         (photos of Rev Whitaker, Rev Nathan Best, Harvey Benneton, Martha Dycus.  by Ellen.)

See, these people seemed like such giants to me because they are, and because they, and Todd, come from a rich 400 year history of Africans in America, sustained by soul power.  When there was no freedom, when there were no votes, when there was no decent education and  no way to make a comfortable living, the people were sustained by the vastness of heart, the fervor of soul, electrifyingly communicated through music and prayer.  I bow in reverence.

~ LETTERS ~

I simply LOVE getting y our letters!  Thanks.  Catching up here for 2 weeks worth

From Jane Auer:

(re. Tom McEvilley's passing:) He taught us Greek.  And he sure didn't seem like a man who thought for himself.  I am happy to learn otherwise.

 From Morris Williams:

Ellen:

I signed the petition (for citizen's referrendum re the parking meter sell-off) because I believe citizens ought to make such a drastic decision. I think privatization of City assets is not in our mid or long term interests. People are already being discouraged from going to City Hall because of the $2.00 per hour parking meters, and if sold to private owners I am fearful it will be much higher, like in Chicago, and we as citizens will have sold away our say.

Many of us have been trying to encourage the city about new revenues for years with no movement. Now they have created an emergency feeling about not selling off another City asset. Yes, a 30-50 year contract is a sell off for those of us my age. The income according to some will last until 2015, but then what? There is no plan for any significant new revenue other than taxation. Should we then sell City Hall. Some say that has already been done. I'll make my own decision as I get more involved.

Ellen, I am rewriting the Home Value Restoration & Job Creation Strategy (HVRJC) so hopefully it is less complex to understand. I will send it to you requesting you share it. The HVRJC, funded totally with private funds will restore some of our home equity, resale value, and wealth while generating 8-12 cycles of good paying jobs with benefits. This will bring significant new revenues for the county, cities, and the state. I submitted it to all city council members and those who met with me and stated their support so far are Councilmembers Cecil Thomas, Chris Seelbach, Chris Smitherman and Charles Winburn.

Nice about Tom Mc.  He was a keynote speaker here for an Arts Conference we did.  I remember speaking with him in Atlanta during an Outsider art show. Liz his niece lives in Clifton and Thailand.   Anna and aaron were at Walnut with his nephew Pete.  Don't remember him looking so hippyish.  Wonderful writing.  Thanks for your remembering Ellen.

 FROM: Sergio Contreras (former Lloyd House Denizen)

Dear Ellen:

Right now I am in La Paz, spending quality time with my mom, cooking and gossiping.

Best wishes so that you and your son can soon spend quality time.

Ellen, so sorry to learn of David's setback.  (I am assuming that Judah is David.  Am i right?)(YES, third child David Judah Sher.  Ellen). I hope he can get the sugar under control without feeling robbed of life's pleasure.  Happy Pesach to tou and all the children.

 FROM: Morris Williams (on Judah's diabetes type I)

Ellen:

Yes, the sugar thing can be ugly. I am a 2 (type II Diabetic), but I am trying to keep myself in check. But, it is so hard to get away from sugar, its in everything and in several different names and formats. So I workout 6 days a week to balance the insulin and keep my weight down. I seldom drink pops, but there is also a lot of sugars in fruits...and I have to fight myself to stay from my love of beer and alcohol, so now I drink maybe once or twice a month if at all while just two tears ago, I was drinking everyday...social affairs, business affairs, and just for any reason:>):>):>). It really wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be to stop drinking, but having said that, being sober isn't all its crocked up to be:>).

No escape:>):>)
