* Prayers and love to Vivien, Neil and Jason Schapera who have lost their beloved son/brother, Aiden, of a sudden out-of-the-blue heart failure at the y oung age of 26. The Schaperas are directors of my Alexander Techniquie training course, and Vivien has founded and led the Four Winds Academy. www.4windsacademy.org/ Final evening of Shiva at their home, tomight 6-8 PM.

Ellen, I can identify with you....Our daughter Kathy lives in LA, and I've done a few of those redeyes, aptly named. Others were sleeping...not me. Now they seem to have cut that out as a nonstop, lucky there are any at all, with delta cutting back so much here. Sometimes Delta is a relative bargain...$300+, other times much more. I've still been sticking with delta...my second currency is delta FF miles, with family on east and west coasts. also have several delta accounts and get companion tickets to pay for one ticket and get 2 if bob and i are flying, or if flying family here, which we still do. You have to pay for a platinum card to get free 2nd companion, but still cheaper than flights. don't know if you are corporately opposed to Amex. I am much more of an expert on miles and hotel points and programs than anyone should be, but makes maintaining connections as affordable as possible.

I have found that driving to Dayton or Louisville reduced my Delta flights to DC about $200-300 dollars, and we still flew into the KY airport on the way out.

The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom
This is an intense historical novel set in the South during the turn of the century when slavery was still the norm in our country. This carefully researched book tells a tale about an orphaned Irish girl who, as an indentured servant, is essentially a slave herself who is raised by the the black slaves on a plantation and then returns as a "free" woman only to discover that as a married women, she is no more free than she was as a child. There are agonizing passages where she is forced to stop calling "Mama" the only mother she has ever known by her husband, who also mocks her for calling a child she has raised "daughter" simply because these individuals are "nigras". Of course, this is only the tip of the iceberg; the book is full of stomach churning scenes and story lines, some of which are unavoidable given the time and others are plot twists that left me anxious and depressed. The author explains in a note at the end that this book wrote itself- when she tried to
steer away from a difficult story line, the plot dead-ended, so she left it all in. In the end, however, I was left relieved and hopeful, which is why I do recommend it. It is a testament to the ultimate triumph of spirit and truth, while giving us a sensory-rich peek into a time not so long ago.
