SECTION ONE: TABLE NOTES

Hi Everyone!
taken just now, working on the Virtual Salon,

 Please read the article on Fracking.  This is a really big deal.  Are we going to be a democracy or not?  That's the question.  Seems to me the people on the "Right"  have been putting out the message that our troubles today (nobody is unaware that quality of life has declined) are beause government is too big, too regulatory, too meddlesome and generally out of control.  What?  Don't people realize that they don't have ANY control over corporate power.  Zero.  Whereas our government is still led by elected representatives.  What's so hard to understand about this?  I clearly, fear giant corporations way more than the government.
Hugs to everyone!

Ellen

      8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

      Folk Singer/Peace Activist

      From Jeff Cobb:

Join Ohio Representative Denise Driehaus and the SW Ohio No Frack Forum for a free screening of "Gasland," the explosive documentary by Josh Fox that exposed the fracking industry for causing numerous forms of contamination, including flammable tap water. (Screening at Esquire Thursday May 24th from 7:30-10:00 with host Denise Driehaus)

The film will be followed by group discussion.

These big oil and gas companies are targeting Ohio!

Chesapeake is on a rampage, using a dangerous new unconventional drilling method for extracting natural gas called fracking. Fracking sends a mixture of millions of gallons of water, silica, and chemicals underground at high pressures, creating cracks in rock formations that allow gas to escape.

      What we know:

      - ProPublica uncovered more than 1,000 court and government documented cases of water contamination related to fracking.

-Toxic, radioactive fracking wastewater is stored in underground injection wells and has been linked to earthquakes, including the New Years‚ Eve tremor that rocked Youngstown, OH.

-Companies have looked at SW Ohio as a possible site for toxic fracking wastewater injection wells.

Presented by the Ohio Sierra Club and Food & Water Watch

Then see www.dontfrackoh.org and the attached flyer about the protest at the Ohio State House.

DON'T FRACK OHIO !

There is a huge national push to oppose fracking*
in Ohio.  The main deal in our state is that we have underground 'spaces' where they can inject the by-product of fracking (water and ... oil?), called "injection wells".  Pumping this stuff underground is causing the geology to destabilize, and hence earthquakes in areas that have always been stable.  Plus, there is danger to the aquifers which supply drinking water.
The Bill McKibben (Climate Change pioneer and hero) started the group "350.org" (see http://350.org ) to press for sensible public policies... like to outlaw fracking, and they are targeting Ohio this year on the fracking issue.  You may wonder "Why 350?"  Because 350 parts per million of Carbon Dioxide (CO-2) in the atmosphere of the earth is the maximum consistent with sustained human-friendly (and other spieces friendly) environment so that things don't spiral out of control.  Ice cap melting, oceans warming, rising, ...  freaky weather, etc. etc.  (As in "An Inconvenient Truth", the Al Gore movie).  They said at the training last saturday that we have already reached 392 ppm!
Ohio is the target for injection wells** from fracking in neighboring states.  Ohio is a  major political state this year.  the Republican Governor Kasich is, predictably, in favor of fracking and allowing the injection wells.  So this is a really big deal.   Please read my article below in the Blue Articles section about fracking and democracy.

There will be a huge demonstration in Columbus June (14, 15, 16,) 17.  Sign up to attend here:  http://www.don'tfrackoh.org
I plan to attend for one day, Sunday June 17, from 11 to 2.  .  Car pool?  Hire a bus?
