Fantastic introductory fee deal :  First lesson free; second through 4th lessons only $10.  After that, only $50/lesson if you buy a package of 4 at a time, prepaid. *   The real fee is $78 per lesson.  I am interested in "turning on" as many people as possible to this wonderful learning.  Good for pain, for performance improvement in the arts, athletics, ... And finally, good for personal development.  It has definite geriatric benefit as well.

Photographs of Reflection:
William Messer (salonista, great guy) in Monet's Garden

 April 20-May 26, 2012

William Messer, a Cincinnati-based photographer, critic, and curator, has photographed Monet's garden at Giverny for more than 20 years. Using a small format, 35-mm camera and black and white film, Messer captures the garden in an unusual way.  "Black and white enables me to expose more of the garden's underlying structure, instead of getting trapped in yet another attempt to replicate Monet's palette." The work has been purchased by major institutional collections, including The Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the Bibliothéque Nationale de France, and received a solo exhibition at the galleries of the French Institute in New York City and an 18-print portfolio in the German publication LFI.

Not normally a photographer of plants or even landscapes particularly, Messer sees the work more as an extended portrait. But this is not some sort of homage to Monet. "Monet created the garden as raw material for his paintings; 100 years later I am using it for my own purposes, mindfully grateful to Monsieur Monet and the scores of gardeners who kept and keep it alive."  The exhibition at PAC Gallery provides a counterpoint to the Cincinnati Art Museum exhibition of Monet's paintings from the garden, Monet in Giverny: Landscapes of Reflection.

FEMME: Self-Portraits by Danielle Voirin opened  at
Iris BookCafe and Gallery, 1331 Main Street in Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine.

Danielle Voirin grew up near Chicago and has lived in Paris since 2003, where she works as a freelance photographer doing editorial, interior and portrait work. In parallel to her commissioned work, she explores her relation to life and her place in it through self-portraiture. The 40 prints in FEMME sample three bodies of work: des Collages are staged tableaux made at the famous "59" cooperative artists' studios in central Paris; Curiostity selects from a 200-page flip-book which records the experience of a head-shave; and Wakings is a long-term self-portrait investigating the physical appearance of the metaphysical space between dreams and actuality, made in the mornings when not quite awake. This is her first solo exhibition in the U.S.

The title FEMME is drawn from a sign in one of the des Collages pieces which reduces the French word for woman ("femme") to the english word "me." The title des Collages itself refers to the collage-like assemblage of many of these 3-D studio images and plays on the french word "décollage," which, among other meanings, is used to mean a "take off," apropos a solo flight.

FEMME is curated by Iris curator William Messer. who will be leading the Second Sunday Crits, April 8, at 2 PM, a mutual discussion of photographers' work, open to all and free.

The exhibition continues through July 20, 2012.

Iris's Spring/Summer hours are Monday-Thursday, 8 AM - PM, Friday 8 AM-7 PM, Saturday 10 AM-7 PM, Sunday 11 AM-9 PM, and Final Fridays 8 AM-10 PM.
