Weekly 7/29/10 - 12

Next week we will have a special presentation:  Scott Gabard Seeborg will give us some training on what to say when touting Democratic candidates either canvassing or phone banking, or even just talking to folks we know.  Scott is excellent!  Please come.  See his blurb below in Announcements section.    ellen
The Lloyd House Wednesday Night Salon WEEKLY
(See at end of this email for introductory material)

SECTION ONE: TABLE NOTES

Ellen, Lauren, Viddle
At the Table: Viddle, Lauren Hanisian, Ellen Bierhorst

Viddle told about his career making documentary films, starting with a 1969 film of an anti Vietnam War protest that still is shown around the world.   Talked of filming in Moscow, in Belorus (Belorussia), in Ukraine, in Israel.  The importance of a regional cuisine in forging peoplehood.

Watched Barbara Wolf's documentary on the proposed sale of the Cincinnati Water Works department to a Regional Water Board, who would pay off the purchase over a 75 year period.

Attendance tonight is light ~ at least in part because tonight was the meeting at Cintas Center called to attempt to persuade the public that the sale is a good idea.
In Barbara Wolf's documentary (see it  here: http://vimeo.com/13379237 )
Chris Smitherman and Roxanne Qualls were eloquently opposed.

Discussed Rudolph Steiner, Anthroposophy, Waldorf education, biodynamic farming.

~ end of table notes ~

Hugs to all,

Ellen

SECTION TWO: ACTIVITIES, OPPORTUNITIES

This is the Barbara Wolf documentary mentioned at table: (it is about 30 minutes long.)

(I'd say it doesn't make the case very well.  I'd like less talk about carbon filters and more explanation about why smart Cincinnatians should vote No in November to selling the Water Works to a Regional Water District.  Roxanne Qualls is against it.  Chris Smitherman is against it.  Barbara Wolf is against it.  There is a lot of talk always about how the suburbs ought to be incorporated into the city for everyone's benefit.  Well, couldn't this be a big fat carrot enticing them to join up?  We already supply their water... What if we said No, not unless you join the team...?  Ellen)

Our Water Works! (If it aint broken or broke, don't fix it.)
http://vimeo.com/13379237

About this video:
"There's talk afoot about "regionalizing" Cincinnati's Water Works. Make no mistake, we're not talking about water here, we're talking about money and what it gets spent on. Right now, the Greater Cincinnati Water Works provides some of the cleanest water in the United States and the world to its customers (the citizens of Cincinnati, and several surrounding counties including some in northern Kentucky). Our water is not only very clean, it is very cheap. In part, that's because all the revenues our Water Works takes in must be spent on our water and the infrastructure that supports and delivers it. The City is now suggesting we should regionalize our water system so that they can release that designated-for-water money to pay for other things. Meanwhile, the City refuses to raise taxes on the richest citizens and corporations because those people and corporations are their major donors. We must say NO to their plan or we will literally be forced to buy our Water Works from ourselves so it can be put under the control of a board made up of those same richest citizens and corporations. (This video was made to perform as one of two characters in THE WATER DRAFT, a live theatre piece about protecting things we hold in common. We think it also speaks just fine by itself.)"

What to say to Voters; Scott Gabbard Seeborg returns to Salon Wed. 4 Aug, this Wed.

Hello Lloyd House Salon!

I had a blast talking with you all a few weeks ago.  Thank you so much again for having Jason and I.

What's at stake in Ohio 2010:
Speaking to voters on values and policy

We are planning a general talking points session for quick, clear cut, and effective messaging to motivate people to keep Ohio BLUE.  These will be mainly based on issues many of us care very much about, and centered around the hot-button issues of the day.  I am also excited to be able to provide answers to the questions left open from our last session.

The talking points session will be oriented around how real world application can work best, and framed around the kind of voter contact that must happen to keep Ohio Blue in 2010 (think re-districting).  We will also be going over how speaking to values specifically can persuade a voter from the heart, and best practices on talking to someone about the policy issue that is most important to you at a door, on the street, or on the phone.

Looking forward to next Wednesday, and many thanks to Ellen and the Salon at large for the opportunity.

Best Regards,
Scott Gabbard Seeborg

HAMILTON COUNTY OPENS CITIZEN SURVEY

Hamilton County Administration is seeking input from county residents as
part of the development

of the 2011 budget. The survey is available to all Hamilton County residents
and will be posted on

the county website at www.hamiltoncountyohio.gov from July 8 through August
8, 2010.

Questions are on 12 distinct policy issues- some issues are listed below:

. stadium fund revenue shortfall

. 911 call center consolidation

. drug incarceration policies

. election policies

. Sheriff's road patrols

. approaches to public health

. mass transit

. overall county government reform

County administration anticipates releasing the survey results in
mid-August, along with revisions

to the 2011 budget forecast, and department responses to the current
forecast budget. The survey

responses may impact budget decisions and engage discussion during budget
hearings between

county officials and the Board of County Commissioners during September.

Hamilton County residents will also have an opportunity to express their
views at public budget

hearings to be scheduled in October.

The 2011 citizen survey was developed entirely through the use of existing
county resources, and

entails no new expenses for county taxpayers. Over 2,000 citizens
participated in last year's

survey.  Take the survey here:

blast here in my first year of teaching the Alexander Technique! Unbelievably, a full calendar since the launch of my practice in late June  2009.   This winter I was having so much demand for my lessons that I had to stop advertising and ask some well-progressing students to drop back to twice a month instead of weekly lessons.

Fantastic fee deal (limited time only):  First lesson free; second through 4th lessons only $10.  After that, only $40/lesson if you buy a package of 4 at a time, prepaid. *   The "real fee" is $78 per lesson.  I am interested in "turning on" as many people as possible to this wonderful learning.  Good for pain, for performance improvement in the arts, atheltics, ... Six Facts No War Supporter
 Knows

By dswanson - Posted on 24 July 2010

By David Swanson

This coming week, the House of Representatives is expected to vote on $33 billion for war. A majority of Americans opposes this, but a sizable minority of Americans supports it. No one who supports it can be aware of any of the following si
x facts.

1. For many months, probably years, at least the second largest and probably the largest source of revenue for the Taliban has been U.S.
taxpayers. We are giving the Taliban our money instead of investing it in useful things at home or abroad. "WARLORD, INC.: Extortion and Corruption Along the U.S. Supply Chain in Afghanistan," is a report from the Majority Staff of the Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs in the U.S. House of Representatives. The report documents payoffs to the Taliban for safe passage of U.S. goods, payoffs very likely greater than the Taliban's profits from opium, its other big money maker. And this is neither new nor unknown to top U.S. officials. But it must be unknown to Americans supporting the war. You can't support a war where you're funding both sides unless you want both sides to lose. We lock people away for giving a pair of socks to the enemy, while our own government serves as chief financial sponsor.

2. Our top consumer of oil is the U.S
. military. We don't just fight wars in areas of the globe that are coincidentally rich in oil, but fighting those wars is the single biggest way in which we burn oil. We pollute the air in the process of poisoning the earth with all variety of weaponry. According to the 2007 CIA World Fact Book, when oil consumption is broken down per capita, the U.S. military ranks fourth in the world, behind just three actual nations. There's no way to care about the environment while allowing the money that could create renewable energy to be spent instead on an operation whose destructiveness is rivaled only by BP. We could have 20 green energy jobs at $50 K each for what it costs to send one soldier to Afghanistan. We're fighting wars for the fuel to fight wars, even though the process is eating up the funds we could use to try to survive its side-effects.

3. Over half of every U.S. tax dollar is spent on wars, the military, and payments on debt for past wars and milita
ry spending. Here's a pie chart that breaks it down for you. If you're concerned about government spending, you can't just be concerned with the minority of it that is carefully funded with taxes and off-setting cuts elsewhere. You have to also consider the single biggest item, the one that takes up a majority of the budget, large chunks of which are routinely funded off the books, borrowed from China, and passed with so-called "emergency supplemental" bills of the sort now before the House of Representatives, the sole purpose of which is to keep the money outside the budget. Numerous economic studies have shown that investing in the military, even at home, does less for the economy than tax cuts, which do less for the economy than investing in education, energy, infrastructure, and other areas. Its wars or jobs, we can't have both. The labor movement has mostly (with some good exceptions) been silent on war spending, in part because jobs spending has been packaged into the same bill. Now it's not. Now the House is confronted with a bill that spends on war the money that is needed for jobs, for housing, for schools, for green energy, for retirement. Will advocates of these raise their voices this week?

4. A leading, and probably the leading, cause of death in the U.S. militar
y is suicide. U.S. troops are killing themselves in record numbers. One central reason for this is likely that these troops have no idea what it is they are risking their lives, and taking others' lives, for. Can we expect them to know, when top officials in Washington don't? When the President's special representative to Afghanistan testified in the Senate recently, senators from both parties asked him repeatedly what the goal was, what success would look like, for what purpose the war went on. Richard Holbrooke had no answers. Senator Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) told the Los Angeles Times: "A lot of folks on both sides of the aisle think this effort is adrift. A lot of folks you'd consider the strongest hawks in the country are scratching their heads in concern." Corker complained that after listening for 90 minutes to Holbrooke he had "no earthly idea what our objectives are on the civilian front. So far, this has been an incredible waste of time."

5. The $33 billion about to be voted on cannot possibly be needed to continue the war in Afghanistan, because it is exclusively to be used for escala
ting that war. The President was publicly pressured by his generals several months ago to begin an escalation, but Congress has yet to fund it. To the extent that it has been begun unfunded, it can be undone. CNN reports: "Defense Secretary Robert Gates warned senators in June that military operations will need to be reduced for the rest of the year unless Congress approves additional funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan." This is nonsense. If this escalation funding were blocked, the war would remain at the level it was at before. And that's if the Pentagon respects the authority of the Congress. The other alternative, openly indicated by Gates, is that the Pentagon will fund the escalation out of its standard budget. Congressman Alan Grayson has a bill called "The War Is Making You Poor Act" which would require that wars be funded out of the military budget, which would eliminate federal taxes on the first $35,000 anyone earned and reduce the national debt. How horrible would that be?

6. War would be the greatest evil on earth even i
f it were free. Watch this new video of a man whose father was shot and killed while sleeping in bed. More of our tax dollars at work. How many of these stories of what our military does can we write off? Our drones kill both civilians and "insurgents," as do our night raids and check points. Or, maybe not the check points. General Stanley McChrystal said that of the amazing number of people we've killed at check points, none of them have been any threat. And the damage lasts in the places we destroy. Look at this new report on the damage done to the children of Fallujah. This is not because U.S. soldiers aren't brave or their parents didn't raise them well. It's because these wars don't involve pairs of armies on battlefields. We're occupying countries where the enemies look like everyone except us.

Well, maybe our representatives know all of this and still fund wars because people who fund them tell them to. But what can we do about it? We vote whenever there's an election, or at least some of us do. Isn't that our role? What does this have to do with elections? It should have everything to do with them. When we call our congress members this week we should not just ask them to vote No on war money, we should demand it, and we should let them know that we will work to unelect them, even replacing them with someone worse (since you can't get much worse), if they vote for this money. And we should spend August rewarding and punishing accordingly. Here are 88 candidates for Congress this year who have committed to not voting a dime for these wars. They are from every party and political inclination. They should be supported.

If this war funding can be blocked for another week it will be blocked until mid-September and perhaps for good. If we can get closer to doing that than we have before, we will have something to build on. Just holding a straightforward vote in which war opponents vote No and war supporters vote Yes, no matter how close or far we are from winning, will identify who needs to keep their job and who doesn't. If most of the Yes votes are Republican, we will be able to confront the President with the opposition of his own party. We're moving toward peace.

Ellen Asked Bentley Davis: Where Should I volunteer to help the fall election most?

Ellen,

Below is an answer to your question.  And, yes, you may publish my response.

There are three ways a progressive can volunteer to help win the fall elections:
  • volunteering for an individual candidate,
  • volunteering for the party,
  • or volunteering for a progressive organization that is doing electoral work.

The most effective means of volunteering would be canvassing (most effective) or phone banking (2nd best) for an individual candidate or through a progressive organization.  This is not to discount volunteering for the party.  Let me explain:

When canvassing or making calls for a candidate, you are giving that specific candidate your endorsement.  People find it persuasive that you are willing to give your all for a specific candidate.

When volunteering on behalf of a progressive organization and talking to people who are sympathetic to that organization, people are more apt to be motivated to support the candidates the organization is endorsing.  There are also progressive organizations that don't endorse, but canvass or phone bank to encourage people to vote.

I have been very active in party politics in the past, and they need volunteers too.  But people are less apt to be persuaded by a purely party message unless they already identify with the party.

Depending upon the hours one has to give, it is possible to do volunteer work for more than one candidate or for an organization as well as a candidate or the party.

Finally, don't forget letting your social networks (twitter, facebook) know who you are supporting and why.  When talking to your own friends, you can be profoundly effective.

If you have any other questions at all, please feel free to contact me.

Best,

Bentley

Ellen Bierhorst Ph.D., M.AmSAT CBO: Public health option would save $68 billion through 2020

(I sent this question to Bentley Davis, our policy wonk, and here is her response:)
On Tue, Jul 27, 2010 at 6:41 AM, Ellen Bierhorst <ellenbierhorst@lloydhouse.com> wrote:
Hi Bentley,

Atia Huff forwarded this ... I am confused.  I thought the health care bill as passed precluded public option.  Is there really a bill on the floor of the HOuse that could bring it back?
ellen

Hi Ellen,

The health care reform doesn't make a public option illegal, it just didn't create one.  There is a bill to create a public option -- HR 5808.  It is not on the floor yet.  It is currently in committee (energy and commerce committee).  While it will not hurt to ask representatives to join the 128 cosponsors or to at least vote for it, it is unlikely to pass this year.  The senate had a hard enough time just passing the unemployment extension, I don't see them developing the courage to vote for this.

But in general, the health care law can be amended.  Republicans are threatening to amend it to non-existence if they gain control after the midterms.  We can pressure progressive candidates/ office holders to amend the law to make it more progressive -- such as adding a public option.

Best,

Bentley

(So here is the article Atia sent:)

Creating a public option that all Americans could choose would save $68 billion through 2020, according to a new analysis by the Congressional Budget Office.

The analysis was included in a letter to Rep. Pete Stark (D-Calif.), who along with Reps. Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.) and Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) is introducing a bill this week creating a public option in the state exchanges that start in 2014.

The new CBO report scores lower savings than the public options discussed during the healthcare reform debate because they were tied to legislation that differs from the law that was enacted in March.

The bill has more than 100 Democratic co-sponsors but faces strong opposition from the insurance industry, and physicians and hospitals worried that it would bring down payment rates.

Using Bounce Sheets in Novel Ways
(forwarded by Marcia Combs)

My mail carrier told me that the U.S. Postal service sent out a message to all letter carriers to put a sheet of Bounce in their uniform pockets to keep yellow-jackets away

Use them all the time when playing baseball and soccer. I use it when I am working outside. It really works. The insects just veer around you.

All this time you've just been putting Bounce in the dryer!

1. It will chase ants away when you lay a sheet near them. It also repels mice.

2. Spread sheets around foundation areas, or in trailers, or cars that are sitting and it keeps mice from entering your vehicle.

3. It takes the odor out of books and photo albums that don't get opened too often.

4. It repels mosquitoes. Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors during mosquito season.

5. Eliminate static electricity from your television (or computer) screen.

6. Since Bounce is designed to help eliminate static cling, wipe your television screen with a used sheet of Bounce to keep dust from resettling..

7. Dissolve soap scum from shower doors. Clean with a sheet of Bounce.

8. To freshen the air in your home - Place an individual sheet of Bounce in a drawer or hang in the closet.

9. Put Bounce sheet in vacuum cleaner.

10. Prevent thread from tangling. Run a threaded needle through a sheet of Bounce before beginning to sew.

11. Prevent musty suitcases. Place an individual sheet of Bounce inside empty luggage before storing.

12. To freshen the air in your car - Place a sheet of Bounce under the front seat.

13. Clean baked-on foods from a cooking pan. Put a sheet in a pan, fill with water, let sit overnight, and sponge clean. The anti-static agent apparently weakens the bond between the food and the pan..

14. Eliminate odors in wastebaskets. Place a sheet of Bounce at the bottom of the wastebasket.

15. Collect cat hair. Rubbing the area with a sheet of Bounce will magnetically attract all the lose hairs.

16. Eliminate static electricity from Venetian blinds.. Wipe the blinds with a sheet of Bounce to prevent dust from resettling.

17. Wipe up sawdust from drilling or sand papering. A used sheet of Bounce will collect sawdust like a tack cloth.

18. Eliminate odors in dirty laundry. Place an individual sheet of Bounce at the bottom of a laundry bag or hamper.

19. Deodorize shoes or sneakers. Place a sheet of Bounce in your shoes or sneakers overnight.

20. Golfers put a Bounce sheet in their back pocket to keep the bees away.

21. Put a Bounce sheet in your sleeping bag and tent before folding and storing them. It will keep them smelling fresh.

22. Wet a Bounce sheet, hose down your car, and wipe lovebugs off easily with the wet Bounce.

hi, ellen,

after reading your salon minutes today, i thought of dropping you a personal note and i hope this will not mess up your routine too much. lol.

first, would you tell me how you find time to read in your busy day? i think i know your answer: where there is a will... anyway, good on you.

second: let me compliment you on the eclectic compilation of subjects in the minutes. very impressive. what struck me or rather shocked me were the questions posed to the DEM visitors by salonistas, regarding the lack of information that trickles down to citizens. it seems to me, that if citizens of salon caliber feel they don't know enough about the job our president is doing, there must be some serious problem with messaging by the WH and the administration.
if only we had better or real media. i realize the 24 hour news cycle by the corporate media, always seeking the breaking sensational story that brings highest ratings is hard to compete with, but nevertheless, it is an obvious failure of framing and messaging. WH press corps has long lost its usefulness and i'm not sure Gibbs is the best presenter.

to illustrate my claim, i compiled a list of some of the news that got lost in the mail or in the din of 'reporting' by our media. you can tell me to bug off, of course, but i'm presenting it with most sincere intent; hope you are not offended. IMO, Obama is doing lot of good, slowly correcting many injustices under very difficult circumstances, and gets limited amount of credit for it. here we go:
