Section One: Table Notes ............................................................................ (Note: these notes were taken at the table and have NOT been approved or corrected by the speakers.  Reader beware of inevitable misunderstandings and misrepresentations.  E.B.)
At the table Wednesday 7/9/08

Elaine Bradford, Linda Gruber, Steve Sunderland, Mary Biehn, Mr. G., Mira Rodwan, Ellen Bierhorst, Bill Limbacher, Brooke Audreyal, Chris Metzger, Bob Witanowski

(Informal conversation about teaching autistic college students.  Amazing break throughs.)
Steve MRDD board selected a group of handicapped students to attend the special needs conference at UC.  With safety the blossomed.

(discussion of aging skin and products to help.  We will be having a demo. In a few weeks by Mary Kay and another by Merle Norman representatives.

Linda  Watched the speech Monday by Obama on TV.  ... McCain talked to NAACP today, ... They said he only got applause when he mentioned Obama.
Elaine:  I liked it that McCain stood by his assertion that parents are responsible to raise their kids.

Mary What did Jesse Jackson say about nuts? About Obama.
Mira Implied he should be castrated. He thought the mic was off.  Said Obama should have first said Black people need justice.
... Obama said that black men should take charge of their children.

Mr B: I thought Sharpton’s name came up also.  With Cosby.

Steve  The statistics about Black people are just devastating, and not getting any better.  I don’t like hearing that black billionaires talk down to Black people; they don’t need to have another boulder rolled down on them.  The schools are unforgiveable.  Good teacher teach in the suburbs.  We need a Marshall plan for the inner cities.

Bill I think Cosby has a valid point.  Blacks have to be better parents.  I see it all the time on the freaking bus.  I see mothers screaming at their kids all the time.

Anonymous:  About Jesse Jackson, I think he is watching the parade of young African Amer. Leaders pass him up, and I think he feels terribly frustrated.  He knows that what Steve is talking about is true; there is a lot of inequality that perople are not even awareness.  Lighter skin people have more rights.  People aren’t even aware of their prejudice.
At church Sunday we discussed reparations for slavery.  We discussed reparations given to Native Americans, Japanese Americans.

Steve the New Yorker cover piece shows that Obama owes Nothing to Jackson for his rise to political power in Chicago.  Fascinating article.  ... Amazing billionaires for Obama in Chicago.  Obama was not a child of the civil rights movement.  Is a very original person ...

Elaine to connect some of the dots ... Energy workers that have spoken here... The Dalai Lama is from a higher vibration level than the angry black men, which is a low vibration.  The Dalai Lama is trying to raise people’s level.  It takes many generations to lift vibration.... Angry black men can’t learn from him.  But Obama can.  J. Jackson still preaches root level anger.  ... Hopefully we are all outgrowing our need to be in an enclave of our clique.  “E pluribus unum, out of many, One.”

Steve Jackson is the best speaker in my lifetime, including M L King.  His speech at the Jackie Robinson funeral was fantastic, opened up the civil rights movement.  I’ve heard him many times.  But when a person is feeling abandoned, anger does start to emerge.
Mira Jesse Jackson’s son, Jesse Jackson jr., congressman from Chicago, said he disagreed with his dad on this.
... When Jesse Jackson ran for president I said I liked what he said the best of all, but he is a loose cannon in his passion.
Steve  like Bill Clinton, why we don’t want Bill Clinton back in the White House.

Elaine Some retired Proctoid at the gym said Americans don’t want Mrs. Obama, an educated Black woman.  Outspoken.
Brooke  it was her remark about this being the first time she was  proud of her country since being an adult.
Linda  Even Laura Bush defended Michele Obama for that.
Steve: I have decided to stop listening to Obama’s speeches;  He seems to be tacking towards the center, and it is sad.  He is walking in a mine field.  Anything he does can just go off.  ... Were it not for McCain who has serious issues with reading, and might not even finish the campaign, it’s too grueling.

Brooke  there were complaints that McCain smelled like urine.  ...  (joke).
Steve this whole ageism stuff....  Playboy bunny wife... Abandoned his first wife on her deathbed...
Mira McCain’s mother is 95, and looks great.  ...  What do you think, the Green party is running  two women for pres and v.p.

Linda Garrison Keilor said McCain was asked about Viagra and he stammered and couldn’t come up with an answer.

Steve are people grieving Hillary?
Mr. G.:  I was for Hillary, but then I flipped.  But now I am sad, I want her in the picture.

Steve  I know some feminists who are so angry about how Hillary was attacked for being a women, they won’t even vote.  “You just don’t get it, Steve, about the misogynist expressions undermining her credibility ...  Said things you would never say about a male  candidate.”

Mr. G.  I have to wonder about the claim of misogyny is right.  If Bill were not in the background...  Bill acting like a fool and she is not saying “shut up”.  Makes her look uncourageous.

Chris  Do you think Hillary’s supporters will pay her debts.

Mr. G.  What about Colin Powel.
Chris at the UN he lied for Bush to justify the war.  He knew it was a lie.
As Shultz said, You can’t want the job too much.  Powel wanted the job too much.

Steve  Condoleezza Rice was a very tough, smart person, but she turned out to be a wimp.
... A general, a three star general, has now called for war crimes trial against Cheney, Bush and Rumsfeld.

Ellen I heard that Obama was sucking up to the right wing zionist Jewish people.  “Undivided Jerusalem” etc.
Steve  I think even our greatest presidents said anything to get elected.  Lincoln said he woudn’t free the slaves if there were any other way to save the union; FDR said he wouldn’t take us to war under any conditions.

Elaine I  have a friend in the Pentagon who says the war in Iraq will be escalated before Bush goes out of office.
Mr. G.  Yes, but according to NYTimes Maliki is now calling for a date for our withdrawal and that is putting a monkey wrench in the plans.

Steve dangerous possibility of war with Iran.  One thing that is a deterrent is how huge the country of Iran is.  ...
It is  awful seeing the veterans coming back from Iraq in terrible shape psychologically.
Ohio is now the friendliest state for vets.... Any vet can go to Ohio universities as an Ohio resident tuition level.

Brooke I have a question.  And there was a poll: only 31% of white people were for Obama.  If we accept the idea that the Republicans’ strongest card is to play up fear and terror... How may they play it?

Mira on talk of the nation yesterday, an Afr. Amer. Comic said he was outraged at the cover of the New Yorker.

Steve I think Israel will be the one to attack Iran, and I think they will only bomb the nuclear facility and the international community won’t object.

Mr. G. the Israelis and the Palestinians are closer than ever before to settlement.

Chris One of our big fights is just terrorists, without nations.  ... Our consulate in Turkey was attacked the other day, violently.  I am surprised the there is not more talk about it.

Steve Turkey is going thru a terrible time... They have just arrested 80 generals suspected of a coup... The president is Islamist, and the generals are secularists.  Huge struggle.  Violent.  ... A million Armenians were killed by the Turks at the beginning of WW I ... 1908.  Sent them into the desert without water.  Terrible thing.  Hitler learned from this.  He said, “Who remembers the Armenians?”

Bill  I do have some good news.  Today’s newspaper.  Massachusets is going to repeal the 1915 law prohibiting inter racial and same sex marriage. So then like California, anybody can go to Mass. And get married.

Brooke  ... On the media, a lot of Native American’s marched across the country.
Steve Russel Means, Native American, is calling for a separate country.

Elaine a few weeks ago we sat on the porch and Neil asked, How can we repair the damage that has been done.  My comment is that we need to start with the family and heal there.  I like what Obama said, we need personal responsibility in raising your family.

Steve as a culture we are so ready to hear negative stories about African Americans in this country.  ... I saw wonderful NAACP speakers. ... My sense is we are not ready for an African American to be elected.
Mira the most wonderful proposal was made at the end of the slave reparations discussion at St. John’s to have a Truth and Reconcilliation commission process here in Cinti. and across the country.

Steve See “Women of the Civil Rights Movement” at the Museum Center.  Brilliant design... I did not know 90% of the women who were discussed there.  My sense is, We don’t know this history.  Why aren’t we teaching this?  Instead, we tend to teach that ML King was responsible for the entire civil rights movement.

Linda As a culture we are addicted to violence.  Local news.  Murders, shooting.
Chris  I know a producer of a big news show in NY years ago.  He sid, “I start off with Cain and Able, then a story of leaving the garden... Go right through the old testament.  It works.  It sells.

Mira How do you make peace exciting.
Chris  the worst news, in 1987, when they found that internatioal news was not profitable... Started getting rid of foreign corespondents. So now we don’t have an educated citizenry about international affairs.

Steve:  now stories about giving human rights to animals.

Brooke  how often we converse about the fear, the violence.  How we make peace exciting?  We certainly need to talk about our human creativity, being more connected with each other, supporting each others power.  It is so easy when we get together with friends,  to talk about what is wrong with today.  It is essential that we support peace by working to shift ourselves back to supporting the peaceful things that are happening.  The fact is that there is more peace in the world than is war.  You think about all the things in history that were “impossible” that have happened.

Christiane Northrup urges us to contact congress reps. about a pharm. issue:

From: Dr. Christiane Northrup <listadmin-northrup@hayhouse.com>
Subject: Oppose FDA’s Restriction on BHRT

Greetings,

Recently, I told you about the FDA’s attempt to prevent compounding pharmacies from using estriol (a bioidentical form of estrogen), an action that was instigated by Wyeth Labs. I urge you to join the ground swell of women and men, doctors and lay persons, who are notifying their congressional representative that this is unacceptable.
When it comes to hormone replacement, women deserve access to all the options, especially bioidentical hormones (BHRT) which are safe, highly effective, and natural to a women’s body.

I encourage you to let your congressional representative know that you want to preserve your right to choose BHRT by following the link below in the message from Citizens for Health.

Together we can make a differenc
e.

Sincerely,

Christiane Northrup, M
.D.

Citizens for Health also writes:

Dear Supporter,

Washington, DC: An attack is under way against a woman’s right to know as well as her access to bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), and the information women need to make their own health decisions is in jeop
ardy.

On January 9, 2008, the FDA sent numerous pharmacies an order to stop using estriol as well as banning the use of the term “bio-identical.” This was an unprecedented attack on compounders, patients, and physicians because until then NO compounded drug component with a USP monograph had been withdrawn from circulation unless there had been evidence of harm to patients.

The U.S. Congress has taken a critical first step toward reigning in the FDA’s ac
tions, acting to preserve women’s right to make their own health and wellness decisions. Congressman Mike Ross (D-AR), together with other members of the House of Representatives, has introduced House Concurrent Resolution 342. This Resolution calls upon the FDA to reverse the change in their policy that would restrict women’s access to prescriptions containing estriol.

To urge your Representative to Preserve Access to Estriol an
d BHRT!

House Resolution 342 also calls on the FDA to respect the physician-patient relationship and states that doctors, not the FDA, are in the best position to determine which medications are appropriate for their patients. It also points out that the FDA has acknowledged that it is unaware of any adverse events associated with the use of estriol over the past three decades. In fact, the FDA’s own policy, stating that bio-identical hormones are natural and, therefore, can’t be patented, seems to run counter to their actions earlier this year.

In addition, the FDA has never taken any compound off the market unless there were reports of serious adverse health events. Since the FDA itself has admitted that there have been no adverse events reported for any use of estriol in medications the only apparent motivation for their restriction of estriol is a citizen’s petition filed by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals in 2005 intended to undermine women’s access to BHRT.

To urge Congress to put your interests ahead of corporat
e profits!

      Ellen Researches Skin Care

So at a party recently I asked Anne Gelke (a smart MD) what she did for her own skin care.  She talked about a cleanser from Merle Norman (I didn’t think Merle was still around), and mentioned a web site where they review all the products and their ingrredients.  Said it was pretty good:  webmd.com.  So I went there and did some research, and here are my notes.  Also, I plan to have a demonstration at the salon from a Merle Norman lady, and also a Mary Kay lady, and also have Rosemary Schlachter come and demonstrate her “galvanic spa II” gadget from NuSkin.

      http://www.webmd.com/diet/vitamins-supplements-8/beauty-skin-care-vitamins-antioxidants

      Skin health vitamins, take orally:

      C 1k - 3k,
       E,400 iu D-alpha-tocopherol
       selenium 100-200 mcg  (I-selenomethionine)
      , B-12

      Or in cream:
      15% to 20% vit. C (non esterified)
      2 - 5% vit E
      .02-.05% selenium

      applying Coenzyme Q10, 0.3% concentration

Topical retinoic acid (Retin-A, Renova) restores the elastic fibers that keep skin tight.  Reduced the appearance of wrinkles.
Use once a day.  Start with low concentration, as in .01% in gels, and work up to 0.1% in creams.  At first use every 3 then every 2 days; at night.  If too high a concentration can get redness and peeling.

Flavonoids MAY help, as in green tea, soy, and chocolate.
Or, there is an extract of green tea you can put on  your skin.

B vitamines are esential.  chicken, eggs, fortified grain products.  deficiency can lead to dry, itchy skin.

B 6 applied to skin may reduce wrinkles.

Stay out of the sun.  Use a broad spectrum sunscreen.  SPF 25 in winter, 30 in summer, that protects against both ultraviolet A and B rays.  Reapply sunscreen every 90 minutes.  Avoid tanning beds.  Use moisturizers with SPF of 15 or more.

Load up on foods high in omega-3s and vitamins and antioxidants for the skin, including:
          •    Selenium -- Brazil nuts, turkey, cod
          •    Vitamin B-2 -- Milk, enriched grain products, eggs
          •    Vitamin B-6 -- Chicken, fish, nuts
          •    Vitamin B-12 -- Clams, liver, trout, fortified cereals
          •    Vitamin C -- Citrus fruits, red peppers, broccoli
          •    Vitamin E -- Sunflower oil, whole grains, nuts
          •    Omega-3s -- Salmon, flaxseed, safflower oil, walnuts
      VITAMIN D
take orally.  Adults: 200 IU.  Age 51-70 need 400 IU.  Over 70 need 600 IU.

      http://www.webmd.com/skin-beauty/wrinkles-8/default.htm
video about "deep chemical peel" at a dermatologist.  also botox.
chemical Peel:  glycolic acid, tricloroacetic acid, salicyclic acid, lactic acid or carbonic acid, sometimes in combos.  Maybe mild redness afterwards.
Laser skin resurfacing, old fashioned type is powerful, newer "nonablative" lasers penetrate beneath the surface skin. This stimulates collagen production, improving skin's tone and texture and minimizing fine lines. There is no damage to the outer skin, so there is no recovery time. Usually you get 4 to 6 treatments, spaced out over several weeks.  for best results.

      Microdermabrasion
"involves a device that "sandblasts" the skin with a spray of abrasive microscopic crystals. Scars from acne or chickenpox, wrinkles, and age spots can be reduced or removed with microdermabrasion.
Several treatments (up to 10 or so) may be needed for good results. Each treatment takes 30 minutes to an hour, repeated over weeks. Microdermabrasion has no side effects and no recovery time for most people.
Full dermabrasion uses a rougher but more effective approach. In dermabrasion, a "skin sander" abrades skin more deeply. Seven to 10 days of recovery time are usually needed for skin to heal after dermabrasion."

Then there is something called “chemical peel” that is done at the dermatologist’s office. Takes 15 minutes.  Instant results.

      INJECTED FILLERS
all are temporary (and so not interesting to me) except
      Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) Fillers
"Polymethyl methacrylate is a new, permanent cosmetic filler. PMMA has been used for decades as a cement for bone surgery, and was recently FDA-approved as an injectable cosmetic filler.
You heard right -- we said "cement." Polymethyl methacrylate is a non-biodegradable chemical. Unlike biological products, PMMA produces permanent cosmetic results." http://www.webmd.com/skin-beauty/wrinkles-8/cosmetic-fillers?page=2

Adrenal Fatigue: America’s Contemporary Epidemic

We live in a day and age where our lives are stress-filled and incredibly busy.  “Burning the candle at both ends” is a way of life for many of us, staying up late and getting up early – trying to get it all done.  Many are stuck in dead-end jobs, unfulfilling relationships, and live in constant emotional turmoil.  This stress, coupled with poor nutrition, lack of sleep, lack of exercise and overuse of sugar and caffeine, leaves our body in a state of adrenal fatigue
The basic task of your adrenal glands is to rush all your body’s resources into “fight or flight” mode by increasing production of adrenaline and other hormones. When healthy, your adrenals can immediately make the necessary physiological changes to deal with the “emergency”.  However, let’s emphasize two points about this healthy stress response. First, it takes priority over all other metabolic functions. Second, it wasn’t designed to last very long.

Instead of occasional, acute demands followed by rest, we’re constantly over-worked, under-nourished, exposed to environmental toxins, worrying about others — with no let-up. When someone lives in a state of relentless stress, the adrenals become exhausted by the constant demand placed on them for adrenaline and cortisol.  This results in a condition called Adrenal Fatigue.  Conventional medicine only considers the extreme of Hypoadrenalism, called Addison’s Disease, as a problem.  Anything short of this is considered “normal” on the laboratory tests. Addison’s Disease is a condition where the adrenal cortex has been at least 90% destroyed by the body’s own immune system.  Certainly destruction of the adrenal cortex to a lesser degree should not be considered “normal”, but Addision’s Disease is all your medical doctor is trained to recognize as a Hypoadrenal state.

Symptoms of adrenal fatigue are many, with the most common ones being fatigue that is not relieved by sleep, light-headedness when going from laying, sitting or squatting to a standing position, experiencing an afternoon “low” that picks up after eating dinner, insomnia, weight gain, depression, hair loss, acne, cravings for salty or sugary foods, poor immune function, and intolerance to cold.  As adrenal fatigue progresses, it is usually a factor in the development of Fibromyalgia, Hypothyroidism, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Arthritis and Premature Menopause.  Ultimately, the adrenal glands lose the ability to produce DHEA in sufficient amounts, which is a precursor hormone to estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and is necessary to moderate the balance of hormones in your body.  Individuals experiencing complete adrenal exhaustion may not have enough muscle strength and energy to get out of bed and the condition can ultimately be fatal.
If you suspect that you may have adrenal fatigue, call WholeCare today to arrange an appointment to get help with proper diagnosis.  Looking at blood pressure, pupil constriction, and doing saliva testing will help to correctly identify the condition.  Mild to moderate adrenal fatigue can be improved with dietary changes, supplementation, stress reduction, and rest.  More severe cases may also need dramatic lifestyle changes and additional supplements, such as glandular therapy to manage the recovery.  Typical recovery time is from a few weeks to a few months, depending on the degree of adrenal insufficiency.

Obviously, protecting the adrenal glands from damage is certainly preferable to trying to repair exhausted adrenals.  Ultimately, the best way to do that is by eating properly, getting plenty of rest, taking time for yourself, and removing the “energy robbers” from your life.
