Suellyn Introduces Braden Trauth:
I met him at Civic Garden Center, talk on Forest to Gardening.  From Cinti., but has traveled the world in pursuit of learning permaculture from the best, the originators, Bill Mollison and David Holmgren.  So I know he will tell you plenty more about his background and about the plans he has to  train people in permaculture here.

BRADEN TRAUTH ON PERMACULTURE

My family in Cinti. 150 yrs.  St. X.  Grad DAAP in industrial Design.  Car design.  Got jaded.  3 years.  Focused on sustainable product design.  ... Earthships, off-grid housing, solar powered, recycles water ... Created by Mike Reynolds, a UC grad in 70’s.
Then I wanted to get certified in permaculture.  This is the heart of sustainability.  So many problems that permaculture addresses: social justice, environment, political, jobs.  ... The need for permaculture, if not the oil (Peak Oil, global warming), it is the soil.  We have not known how to work with nature.
If we do overcome our energy problems, we still have to confront our failure of agriculture, which is destroying our arable land world wide.  ... New Mex. Desert caused by Spanish sheep grazing 500 yrs ago.
The highest yielding eco system are mangroves.  9000 kilo calories of product per square foot per year.  We could mimic this ecosystem.  Chinampa System, by Aztecs were like this.
Humans have typically felled the forests e.g. In Mediterranean for warship building.  The Romans.
Then  comes annual agriculture, until it gets too dry, then grazing until it is dead.
But forests stabilize the water tables, clouds, rain.  Hydrological systems.  The climate gets dry unless ocean cycles bring moisture as in Britain or in the US west.
The way that humans have related to nature: exploitation and then collapse.  Like the Norwegian cattle farmers that ruined Greenland and then died out.
Oil and technology have accelerated this process of exploitation and collapse.
Factors: population growth; consumption; technology; loss of relationship with the earth.
How can we get our needs met in an ecological way?
In 1978, Permaculture One.  Edible Forest Gardens by Dave Jackie.
Food, fiber, fuel, fodder, pharmaceuticals, foundations for houses... Our needs: how can we provide them in a way that helps nature thrive, rather than depleting nature.
These gurus are doing permaculture around the world.
Problem is that we need to plan by the laws of nature rather than the laws of markets  and man.
Permaculture is about planning our systems according to the laws of nature that require little care by humans, because they take care of themselves.
Bill Mollison has a permaculture course of 75 hours, certification, these 30 years.  Now includes things like how to build buildings, run money systems, etc.  etc.  ... Scott Pittman, a protégé of Mollison.  Now including psychological healing as well.
Permaculture Institute of Australia has graduated 400000 people.  Mollison is about 80, still going strong.

Design:  is creative problem solving.  Identify problem, find solution.  ... A forest is completely self sustaining.  Provides for all its needs. No fertilizer, no pesticides.  Each species cooperates, serves multiple functions.  E.g. Certain plants sequester nutrients, which then provide for other species.  Nitrogen fixers (soy beans) provide nitrogen for others.  Locust trees also are nitrogen fixers, when they die, release nitrogen into the soil.  The Green Revolution from the 50’s was based on nitrogen from natural gas.  A bad idea.
Pretty much all other plant species need nitrogen, but can’t get it on their own.
Nitrogen fixer species can get nitrogen out of the air, put it into the soil.  Then other species can get it and thrive.
Jeff Laughton found a 2000 year old food forest.  Over storey of date palms, under storey of citrus and olives ... Olives are nitrogen fixers, and bananas under that.
A guild of plants that grow together so that it takes care of itself and provides food for us.  Could be yard sized or huge.

Here in the back yard you could have nut tree on top, and under them Paw paws, service berries, apples, bushy things like berry bushes,

http://Pathtofreedom.com in Pasadena CA, a tenth of an acre produces 6000 lbs of food, enough to feed 4 people and sell to restaurants.

Elaine my cousin opened a restaurant and had a greenhouse next door.

Braden: food forests are one way to get our needs met.  A greenhouse could play a part in year-round food production.  If you don’t want to put fertilizer etc. into it, but want a harmonized eco system...

Bob there also have been weather pattern changes that have wiped out a lot of cultures based on moisture... Two brothers in Phoenix have worked on capturing rain water.  You cannot ignore weather patterns.  It wasn’t man that wiped out the lush savannah of the Sahara.

Braden permaculture advises we study our ecosystems.  E.g. Native Americans  cultivated the wild nature for their needs.  1491 a book.  About that.
... Just heard on 90 Sec. Naturalist about the depletion of our soil.

Bob the omnivore’s dilemma addresses this issue.
Suellyn the loss of soil: permaculture is a way of agriculture that actually rebuilds the soil.  Like forests do.

Braden  I spoke with Michael Pollen, of Omnivore’s Dilemma is actually using, advocating permaculture principles.  Live lightly on the earth.

Mira  how long does it take to create this bio diverse community?
Braden  it takes 20 years.  We have an annual agriculture (rather than perennial plants like trees, bushes, etc.) because it fits with warring culture.  You can take your seeds and relocate.  So it is a spiritual thing.
It takes 1000 years to produce 1 inch of soil using grasslands, the fastest way.

Eco village:  I had wanted to join an Ecovillage.  Eco villages tend to isolate, e.g. Earth Haven.  I have been around the world looking at eco villages.
If you take the 72 hour course, it addresses these questions.

We will be giving a certificate course, 72 hours, over over 6 weekends (Sat 9 – 5, Sun 10 – 4:30, at several venues.  Imago to start.  $350 costs (offering sliding scale), write email: bradentrauth@yahoo.com for more info.  Starts March 28, goes until May 4.
You will learn: planting by the laws of nature.  Natural building... Natural systems.  Not just gardening.

Talk: this Sat at Civic Garden Center 1 – 4, talk about Permaculture and about the “Permaculture Design Course” course.

(what
Video on internet?):
“Greening the Desert”  near the Dead Sea. 140 degree temp... Salt ruined soil.    They created a huge garden ...  Nitrogen fixers were most of the crops.  Mulch... 4 months later, found the salts were receding.  Used drip irrigation.  Wonderful success.  Stable eco system.
Also talks about a place in India that does a miracle. http://permaculture.org.au/?p=230

.The course really reveals what is truly “green”.
Earth ships are made out of tires, bottles, cans...

We want to go from Empire to Empower.

Heal our past traumas, empower ourselves, follow our passions,  local, sustainable,  for our full potential.
Will give a b rief intro. To Nonviolent Communication.  Also “The Heart of Now” ideas.

Suellyn if you can dethatch from centralized systems like the power system, the food system.

Bill;  there is a great video about Cuba.  They got thrown into this situation when the Soviet Union collapsed and cut them off oil.  “The Power of Community” about Cuba.  You can buy that through the Community Solutions group in Yellow Springs.  (Ellen: we will show this at the salon soon.  Mira has a copy.)

I now look at the world as an interplay of all these energies...galaxies...the patterns.  The spiral patterns.

In Dave Jackie’s book Edible Forest a cool thing... Shows an amazing exchange of elements in such a short time, ... Everything is in constant cooperation... The mycelium, ... We all are thought to think Darwin, competition.  But succession is another model... Natural systems climax and become stable.

Another story about 1491... Theory about how humans created problems.  E.g. The germs brought by Europeans wiped out 90% of the native populations.  The populations density had been greater than that of Europe.  The Native Americans harvested and managed the ecosystem, but when they died off due to germs, the buffalo herds, the passenger pigeon flocks grew out of bounds.

CALLING FOR PEACE DEMONSTRATORS AT THE LLOYD HOUSE FOR THIS EVENT.
EMPTY SHIRTS, LOST LIVES
5TH ANNIVERSARY OF IRAQ WAR OBSERVANCE
March 19th marks the fifth year of the Iraq War.  This anniversary is a somber occasion
for the US, Iraq and the world; the loss and suffering of the past five years will weigh
on each of us in a special way.  To face this burden together, and to express our
continuing opposition to the war, IJPC will coordinate a special observance.

Details are still being finalized, but please mark your calendar for Wednesday March 19th.
There will be an interfaith prayer service at 4:30 PM at St. Monica St. George.  From
5:30 to 6:30PM we will stand along Clifton Avenue, from McMillan north,(right in front of the Lloyd House) displaying one tee
shirt for each ten US soldiers killed in the war. The empty shirts will tangibly represent our
society's loss of a young person and all that his/her life would have brought to our
world.  Sadly, the line of shirts will extend for more than two miles.  We mourn the fact
that the total loss of life on all sides of this conflict far outstrips our ability to
represent the dead.

To accomplish this moving portrayal of America's loss, we need your help.  We are asking
individuals and groups to commit to this project.  Please respond to Kristen@ijpc-cincinna
ti.org or to 513-579-8547 if you can provide the materials and people needed for the shirt
display.
Each unit of the display will require ten clean tee shirts, clothespins, a
length of rope and four or more people
to hold the shirt display.  Sadly, we will need
about 400 groups of 10 shirts each to symbolize the US dead.  Ideally there will be some
larger institutions that can commit to multiple units, while families and small groups
will provide a single unit.  A detailed "how to" packet will be sent to parties
indicating their willingness to help with our community's commemoration of the fifth
anniversary.

(We have one team signed up...want to join us?  Send me and email, ellenbierhorst@lloydhouse.com)

Attend a "New Priorities" Vigil! <http://act.credomobile.com/ct/JpwYfN61Vu0P/>
On the 5th anniversary of the war in Iraq, we'll honor the fallen and call on our leaders to stop squandering billions on war and start investing here at home instead. Click here to find a March 19 "New Priorities" vigil near you:

<http://act.credomobile.com/ct/JpwYfN61Vu0P/>
March 19 is the 5th anniversary of the tragic invasion and occupation of Iraq. Nearly 4,000 American soldiers -- and many more Iraqis -- have lost their lives due to Bush's Iraq debacle. Billions of dollars have been, and continue to be, squandered on this occupation. Our economy is suffering because of it, but the resources we need to turn it around are funding more bloodshed in Iraq.

So this year, CREDO Action and our partners at MoveOn.org are marking the anniversary by sponsoring hundreds of "New Priorities" vigils across the country. We'll honor the fallen, and call for an end to the war. But we'll also send a new message to the politicians in Washington: to heal our ailing economy, we need to end the occupation in Iraq.

Click here to sign up to attend a March 19 "New Priorities" vigil on the 5th anniversary of the war. <http://act.credomobile.com/ct/JpwYfN61Vu0P/>

These vigils will be very powerful; they will put a face on opposition to the war and remind local communities of the terrible cost of the occupation of Iraq. If we can make our voices heard throughout the country, we'll force our leaders to start bringing our troops home and start investing resources here instead.
