Section One: Table Notes ............................................................................ (Note: these notes were taken at the table and have NOT been approved or corrected by the speakers.  Reader beware of inevitable misunderstandings and misrepresentations.  E.B.)
At the table Wednesday 3 October 2007:
Shari Able, Mary Biehn, Mira Rodwan, Mr. G., Bob Witanowski, Ellen Bierhorst, Derek Lester, Ginger Lee Frank ( a pseudonym), Marvin Kraus, Gerry Kraus, Vlasta Molak,

ANNOUCEMENTS
Shari: so far in the Burma struggle where the  military junta suppresses the monks, one major from the military has escaped, resigned gone to Thailand, and says there is a secret code for when they will be shooting the monks, and a lot of dissention among the officers.
...  Army officers very well paid in Burma.
Bob: Solar tour Saturday Oct 6, I will be at the Eden Park administration building. On Gilbert.  Www.greenenergyOhio.org for more info.
ginger: news .. U.C. ‘s News Record newspaper.  Interesting article about the morality police among the Palestinians.  Appointed by Arafat’s old group.  Check on your fasting for Ramadan.  Red arm bands, “morality police”.
Mr. G. there are two Palestine's now...
Ginger this is the non-Gaza entity.
Palestine's I read that the pres. Of Israel was meeting with Fattah.
Vlasta I
went to Simon Leis’ hearing, preliminary, Judge Nagle did not recluse himself even though he had been friends for forty years.  He heard the plaintiff who charged Leis violated regulations by using public property and money to promote his agenda re. the Issue 27 “jail tax”.  He threatened the employees they might lose their jobs if they don’t vote for the issue.  The plaintiff asked the judge to make Simon Leis stop using public property.  He did not decide yet today.  Did not enact the restriction order.
Ginger yestrday walking down Ludlow, reading about “A feast of Love” at Esquire, Alexa Davelos is playing in that film, and I know her.  Excellent cast!  The kid more than held her own...  Asks the question, “What’s life for” and “How to live a worth while life?”  A tear jerker.

TOPICS Nominated
Vlasta: Public Transportation in Cinti.
Mira: the John McKnight talk at the zoo
Marvin:
I brought a copy of the text of issue 27 for everybody.  It is a lot different from what we talked about.
Ellen: what/who on the ballot.  Vlasta: on Sunday the candidates will all talk at the Greenwich Tavern in Peebles Corner.  8 minutes each.
Gerry if you google Hamilton Co. Board of Elections you can get all the candidates and their issues.

JOHN MCKNIGHT’S TALK AT THE ZOO sponsored by A Small Group (Peter Bloch)
Mira
: he is a prof. from Northwestern U.  Doesn’t like the term “consumer” applied to human beings.  Talked about “community”  For him it means 2 things: service and charitable work are dangerous words, because they suggest a one-way  giving, not an exchange.  He likes two way operations.  You call that “failure to receive”.  Likes the word Hospitality .  Abraham, welcoming strangers.  Each tells his story, host and guest.  Then  talks about the word Hostel.  ... When people become consumers, purchasers, it spells the death of community.  A friend in prison complained that in prison, “I can’t give my gifts.”  Another story about a young child who wanted to help serve the guests, and her parents refused.  This a shame.
I learned working with elders that everyone has a treasure inside them.  John also talked about the elderly.  We shared in groups of 5 about community.
Vlasta It was fun.

TEXT OF ISSUE 27 (JAIL TAX):

Discussion of TEXT OF ISSUE 27
REFERENDUM ON RESOLUTION OF THE
BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

HAMILTON COUNTY

A majority affirmative vote is necessary for passage.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Resolution of the Board of County Commissioners of Hamilton County, Ohio, increasing the rate of levy of
the existing sales tax pursuant to the provisions of R.C. 5739.021 for a fifteen year period (one-half of one
percent for eight years followed by one-quarter of one percent for seven years) to be used for the purpose
of SUPPORTING CRIMINAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE JUSTICE SERVICES IN THE COUNTY,
INCLUDING: PUBLIC SAFETY AND JUDICIAL ADMINISTRATION MEASURES TO REDUCE JAIL
OVERCROWDING, CRIME PREVENTION MEASURES, ADULT AND JUVENILE INMATE
REHABILITATION MEASURES, OPERATION OF NEW DETENTION FACILITIES, AND TO ACQUIRE
LAND AND OTHER FACILITIES BY PURCHASE OR LEASE FOR SAID PURPOSES.

Shall the resolution of the Board of County Commissioners, enacting an increase in the sales tax,
be approved?

YES

NO “

Marvin: this is different from the info sheet we got last week at Suhith’s presentation.
Vlasta
Portune says no matter what, the jail will be built.  If the voters say no to this tax, it will be built anyway from other funds.
... DeWine points out that there are other things to be done rather than incarceration.
Marvin:  on Suhith's hand out, bullet point two.  ... On David Pepper’s website there is a listing of sums for the various purposes, but they are not obligated to use the money this way.
If the resolution is approved there will be a big pot of money created and the co. commissioners will decide each year about how to spend it.
(Ellen: Marvin, could they have worded the issue on the ballot such that it would constrain them to a specific, published plan?)
Marvin yes they could have.
(At the table, 8 people will vote NO and 1 is undecided.)
Mary:  I would vote no because it is too vague. Clearly.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IN CINCINNATI

Vlasta I heard a presentation about the proposed street car up Race, down Walnut.  On tracks.  They can’t use old rails, they say, because they are twisted.  Cost, hundred million.  Goes up to Findlay Market.  Two or three times as much as the Portland system.  Why do we always have to pay too much for everything.  Only six cars; every twenty minutes.  From Findlay Market to down town.
We could have electric busses instead which are a fraction of the cost.
The architect believes it is better to have closed doors for the Banks project rather than a world wide competition.
Claims that the tracks with overhead wires are better because it would encourage development, since it is permanent.
They could also have overhead wires but no tracks.
Gerry if you use photovoltaic cells to make electricity
Vlasta in Nepal in ‘05 I saw Lotus Energy Corp unveiling of busses.  30 people.  Big battery.  25,000 each, only.  These could be even more efficient if you put solar panels on the roof.  On their website they don’t mention the bus.

Kirtan at the Lloyd House
Sat. 13 Sept
4:00 pm for two hours
Organized by Karen Berger of Shine yoga.
Drumming.  Dancing.  Chanting.  Call-and-response.  Love offering accepted.
Karen Johns Berger writes:
Hello Dearest Ones

Just wanted to take a moment to thank all of you - present or there in spirit - for a wonderful kirtan practice on Saturday. Special thanks to Ellen Bierhorst for opening her amazing home to us.

We gathered in the 3rd floor turret room, an amazing room that has held space for many a fine yoga class, drumming circle, and spiritual leader. It's a perfect place for a group this size to gather, chant and crank up the shakti. We had 10 present, and managed to kick up a fair amount of noise in the process. Instruments represented were guitar, hammered dulcimer, drums, harmonium, and plenty of spectacular voices. Plus some unexpected bells and whistles that Ellen added at just the perfect moments. Chants were some you've heard, some you haven't, and we intend to keep it going. (I've got this new harmonium burning a hole in the middle of my living room, and it's just a smokin' good time waiting to be shared with the likes of you all.)

So we will plan to gather again on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 4:00pm once again at The Lloyd House. We played for a couple of hours, and then many of us were able to move the party to Ambar India where we ate and basked in the nest of loving energy we had created. I think this may be a tradition worth continuing. Whaddayathink? I'll be sure to send a reminded, but please MARK YOUR CALENDAR!!

We are combining "practice time" with chanting time, so those of you who just want to come chant with us are more than welcome. We want and appreciate the energy you bring. Please just be aware that we're all in a learning process to play together, and may occasionally stop to teach something to one another. So if you weren't able to come this time, we'd love to have you on the 13th.

Love & Bliss,
Karen

My Friend Pat Baas writes a glowing recommendation for Judge John Burlew, running for re-election to the Municipal Court bench.  Clifton/downtown district.  They will be at the salon on Wed. 10/17.  Hope you can come.

“As an attorney, I  think one of the greatest assets of a good judge is the experience he/she  gained in the courtroom as a practicing attorney.  John's private  practice included civil litigation and criminal defense work so he is well  versed in civil and criminal procedure and rules of court and evidence.   Having been in private practice and having client's to represent gives  one an appreciation of the impact of the legal system on individual lives.   From my experience a number of judges appointed to the bench (or elected  for that matter) have had little or no actual courtroom experience or  experience in dealing with everyday people facing civil disputes or being  caught up in the criminal system which is quite unfortunate.  Also, it  seams in Hamilton County that many of the judges come from the prosecutor's  office, so it is nice to have someone who has a defense counsel's  perspective.”  Pat Baas

Judge Burlew is running for reelection to the Municipal Court  bench.  You may find more information about him at his website:   JohnBurlew.com
