Barrie Konicov, Steve Sunderland, Shari Able, Mr. G., Mira Rodwan, Elaine Urbina, Marilyn Gale mkgnor2004@yahoo.com, Spencer Konicov, Ellen Bierhorst, Janet Kalven, Chad Benjamin Potter,

The shooting at Virginia Tech.
The Nazis wanting to march in OTR.

Steve so many college students ready to go berserk today.

New Yorker current issue article on young children diagnosed with bi-polar illness.  Author is very concerned.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Mira  DVD of an animated movie on the design earthomeproductions po box 212 Stephenson MD 21153  www.earthomeproductions.org  the principles of Wm McDonough applied to ecological crises in earth’s life history.

Steve tomorrow the Freedom Center includes the Peace Village as a Freedom Station, one of 20 in Cinti.  We will be developing programs there.  Tomorrow at 2 …
On display at Freedom Center now, art objects pertaining to slavery.  Amazing.  Beautiful.
-Peace for Hunger conference this weekend at U.C.
            - May 1, Fountain Square a conference on Darfur.  Geo. Clooney. March to Freedom Center. Tuesday.
            - Long negotiations about the Nazi march proposed but then canceled.  We have no human rights leadership in this city.  I wish we could do a simple counter demonstration … Mark Mallory’s ideas were … poor.  The Collaborative Agreement is going down the tubes.  Cecil Thomas has spoken out well …  If the Nazis demonstrate at Washington Park there will be violence and Music Hall is at risk.

Chad On Sunday I was in a huge discussion on this.  It was suggested that we just ignore it because otherwise we are giving them attention.  I live in Over The Rhine.  … We are so scared there.  I feel to ignore it is to give tacit support.
Steve there are many who want to ignore it.  But there is no way that folks who live there won’t respond with violence.  And that is exactly what this g roup (the Nazis ) wants.  That’s why  they chose Over The Rhine.  They propose carrying sings “All black people should leave the city of Cincinnati.”    Like Toledo where they rioted two years ago.  Police over reacted, the black people over reacted. Left Toledo in ruins.  And now it is as if that never happened; our leaders are not mindful.
I feel we should have a meeting of every religious group and discuss what response should be made.
At the meetings last week, the police said they have no intelligence on where the Nazis plan to march.  When.
Elaine  my understanding is that the parade permit was denied because freedom of speech does not extend to “fighting words”.
Steve that’s right.
Elaine and that the ACLU had not decided whether to defend the Nazis.
Steve they changed their mind, and now are supporting       the Nazis.
… Hitler’s birthday is Friday; they had wanted to celebrate that.
… Charlie Chaplin’s movie The great Dictator pokes fun at Hitler.  Available on DVE, blockbusters.
… they planned to bring a small group like 7 people.
The KKK is now back in force stimulated by immigration of aliens.
Butler Co. sheriff is arresting Mexicans …  There are  people in the city worried about the absence of a  good human rights organization.

… Isn’t it something that Bush went to Virginia the next day.

Mr. G. is there anybody going to be looking for these Nazis?  They are just going to show up  randomly. (yes).
Steve  The police seem to be ready.  Either for an OTR invasion or an appearance in a Jewish community.
Mr. G.  what about having ice cream trucks ready to go out there … music, free ice cream.
Steve You aren’t that far from the Mayor. … Freedom Center is holding nonviolent training  for OTR.  There is a pretty good letter that religious groups can sign.  … There ought to be a way that the HRC and elected leaders could come out and say, “This is our best thinking … we will do this and this.”
Elaine teaching them consequences of negative behavior is good, but giving them ideas about tools, responses of positive responses.

Chad  growing up in  high school, being called “faggot” every day, bothers you terribly.  After, when you are built up and feel strong, it doesn’t bother  you.  So likewise, if OTR is built up, affirmed they won’t be as vulnerable to the Nazis hurt.  Let’s send  marching bands through OTR … slogans.
Steve  Yes, exactly.  Beautify and celebrate OTR.  Many  are calling for that, but none in  government.

Mira: one thing about what happened at Virginia Tech. … we can rally and decry, but this is happening in Iraq every day.  My windshield sticker says, “One people, one planet, one future.”
The suffering of the families of the Virginia Tech victims is not more than others …
Steve Nikki Giovanni said as much in her remarks at the memorial service at Virginia Tech.  … But as a prof. at a university I am speechless.  I don’t want to think about how students are driven to violence like this.  … I want to see restored the connection between peace and learning.

Elaine don’t you think there is a difference between violence from lust for power and violence from mental illness.
Steve yes, of course.  But there is an insanity when we say to our children, “Go over there and fight.”   Our society is saying that violence is an appropriate response to injustice.

Marilyn a true mental patient would not  have had the level of efficiency and organization that the killer showed.
Shari re. Nazis in OTR or Amberly Village.  If we go back to Europe, we find that the Jews did not  r eact very much. “Oh, it’s just another pogrom. We’ll survive.”  But it became the holocaust.
Having parades in OTR is not the same as a young gay man  going through high school being called faggot…
If we don’t take action against the Nazis now while they are small, it will get bigger.  You have to make a reaction.  Can’t just have the  ministers saying, “You are good people…”
Spencer   tonight at Mayerson Hall at HUC an author is making a presentation on the “Globalization of Anti-Semitism”.  Things like the Nazi phenomenon are incomprehensible until it is done before, and people know what might occur.
Steve  Interesting about Otto Frank that he knew immediately that Hitler was elected, that he should get the family out of Germany.  Moved them to the Netherlands.  And set up a hiding space at the same time.  There were people who knew what was happening.
Also it is important to note that the US shut its doors against fleeing Jews… unless they were great scientists.
So I disagree with Shari.  There were people in the 30’s who saw what could happen.  It is hard to blame the Jews for not objecting enough.
There were non Jews who stepped forward, but not nearly nearly enough.
NOW, WHAT are we going to do to protect people in OTR?

Spencer no, we need to educate people.  … best way is to stand on the sidewalk and turn your back on the Nazis.
Steve  Oh no… that is just what was said to the Jews.
Since the 14th century the Africans have been engaged in slavery victimization. Blacks could ask themselves, “Could we have slavery again?”  Just like Jews could ask, “Could we have another  persecution of Jews?”
Daniel Goldhagen has three best sellers which in his mind proves that Germans are genetically anti Semitic and have spread their illness abroad.  He will have a packed house tonight.

Spencer Today a s tory in the American Israelite (local Jewish newspaper).  US is refusing aid to Hamas because they are terrorist.  Europe is following that lead.  Now the Europeans and the US are however giving money aid to hospitals in those countries where the people voted for Hamas.  That seems crazy!

Steve … there has been a shift in opinion re. Israel. What will that  mean for Israel?

Janet  there is always a line of anti Semitism under the surface; operates in subtle ways.  In Chicago, May was the month you moved.  She would go looking, and our name could pass as not Jewish. Repeatedly my mother would find one, and go back a second time and suddenly it wasn’t available any more… it was very subtle but  you knew.  The whole society was organized that way, and probably still is.
In the law school fraternities my brother worked hard to break down the  Jew – gentile fraternities’ divide.

Steve  now seeing prejudice against Asians at UC where we have a lot of Asian students.

Janet: I dated an Israeli boy, and my brother dated a gentile girl and both were totally unacceptable!
Steve Where I grew up in the Bronx there was a huge divide between Orthodox and Reform Jews.
Janet there was also an economic factor.  … I did a study and discovered to my amazement that the vast majority of Chicago Jews were Orthodox, even though we were Reform and the Reform Jews were so much more visible.

Steve  In Piqua OH there is a tiny shul (synagogue) right down town.  Amazing.  150 years old.

Barrie  I want to put something on the table.   As of  two days ago I was in Federal Prison in Montgomery AL, 69 month sentence for failing to pay my income tax.  All the time in prison I never felt the anxiety I am feeling right now. Maybe it is only excitement. … I  hear a wonderful discussion and I want to thank each of you.
What we are talking a bout cannot be solved on the level on which we are discussing it.  Every approach we are discussing has been tried and failed.
When I went to prison … a remarkable experience, gave me an enlightenment.  By the way I am innocent of willfully failing to file.
But it has been beautiful for me.  One gift I will share with you.
I got an answer to a question in my mind for 30 years.
Out of that, I have been able to write a book, and  looking forward to a fascinating next ten years.
The solution is not to deal with the symptoms.  Holocaust, march of the Nazis, all symptoms.
My background is hypnotherapy; I use words as tools.  I know that there is a way  this problem can be solved.  Efficiently.  It is systemic through all societies. Three steps.
1) develop an experience of oneness; not separate from each other and from creator.
2) out of this you generate a consciousness of love.
3) peace.  Comes next.
Until you take these three steps, you can get peace and solve the problem.
I was able to take these steps in prison. I am real thankful.
Not ready to share that with you in detail. When my initial shock wears off I will come to share more with you about it.

Ellen … I imagine that Peter Block would disagree with Steve, and would say Don’t wait for elected leaders to respond and solve all the problems; take action yourselves.

Chad:  re. OTR and the Nazis, there are many strong churches there, and a lot of strong business and arts organizations.  Ballet.  Art Academy. Know theater.  … I don’t know why they are not getting together, making a united response…

Steve  I don’t know what it is like for  someone to come out of a prison and come here… I am glad  you are here Barrie.

Barrie:  so grateful for the experience of going to p prison.  … 30% seemed to be innocent.  … In the county jail, right after 9/11, only way to get out of cell was to go to church.  I sat in back row.  Minister saying God answers prayers.  Later I asked  him if God answered the prayers of the plan hijackers at 911 and he said No, not my God.  I asked him, “How many gods were there.? “  He said “One”.  After that he backed off and avoided me  thereafter.  … When I was transferred to Fed. Prison in Florida, at a camp, I went to an intersection, traffic, I was enthralled to watch that.  Exhilarating.

Elaine: our discussion on what makes  you feel most alive…people said, sometimes periods of intense stress.

~ End of Table Notes~
Hugs to everyone,
Ellen

  • Judy Cirillo clarifies something said at the table...
  • Jungian Psychoanalist Clarissa Pincola Estes gives great advice for trauma recovery

From Judy Cirillo:
Hi Ellen,

I've been feeling badly about something I said a few weeks ago, and want to set the record straight. A few of us saw Warren Buffet and Bill Gates being interviewed by some College seniors on TV. One of the questions posed to them was something like how would you define happiness. Both Gates and Buffet said that family and children were very important to their happiness. However, they also said ( I forgot to mention this)  words to the effect that the love you give and receive from those around you is what really matters; doesn't have to be family- Could be coworkers, friends, employees, etc.

I didn't want to leave the impression that they said that if you don't have children or a close family, you can't be happy. If you could put this in the newsletter, I'd feel better. Many thanks.

Judy

Clarissa Pincola Estes

I saw this on the Yahoo lloyd house salon group post ... thank you whoever put it up, I forgot.  A thorough article on what to think and do for yourself psychologically if you suffer a “critical incident”, such as having your classmtes blown to smitherines by a crazed gunman.  Excellent advice, and good to scan even if you haven’t recently had a trauma.  Just real good information.  ellen
