SECTION ONE: TABLE NOTES

Hi Everyone!
taken just now, working on the Virtual Salon
Fanchon, I am holding the camera UP!

I am publishing early today so that you can know about the action downtown about Duke Energy paying no taxes.  Noon.  See below, first announcement.
If you haven't voted absentee in this Tuesday's primary, be sure to get to the polls.  It's the American thing to do.  As the late Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth said, "People have been willing to DIE so that you have the privilege of voting, so VOTE!  Even if there are two scoundrels running, vote for the lesser scoundrel!"  And this... who said it?  "The easiest way to get people to give away their power is to persuade them they don't have any in the first place."
And if you want to join the Occupy folks and protest the corporate domination of the two major parties, go to the polls and ask for a Green party ballot.  See announcement below on that.
I'll be in Israel for nearly two weeks, 3/3 to 3/14, so you may not get a weekly next week.  We'll see.
Hugs to everyone!

Ellen

Hello, fellow poets and poetry lovers:

February is a short month, even in a leap year, so the upcoming First
Friday will be here before we know it.  This month we will be hosting
a reading by the poets of the Cincinnati Writer's Project.

For more information on the Cincinnati Writer's Project, check out
      this link:  http://www.cincinnatiwriters.org.

The Poetry Critique group is part of the Cincinnati Writer's Project
and has been meeting 2 Saturdays a month for many years to work on our
      craft together.

Featured readers this First Friday will include Susan Scardina, Jerry
Judge, Kate Fadick, Karen George, Gwyneth Stewart, and maybe a few
others.  I hope you will come hear us and perhaps stay to learn a
little more about the Cincinnati Writer's Project.

We will meet at 7:30 at Aquarius Star/Om Cafe in Clifton, as always,
and the reading will begin around 8:00.

      Hope to see you there!

HHS Releases Reports on Improved Access to Preventive Services Under the Affordable Care Act "Obamacare":

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced on Wed Feb 15 that the Affordable Care Act provided approximately 54 million Americans with at least one new free preventive service in 2011 through their private health insurance plans, and that an estimated 32.5 million people with Medicare received at least one free preventive benefit, including the new Annual Wellness Visit. Together, this means an estimated 86 million Americans were helped by health reform's prevention coverage improvements. The new data were released in two new reports from HHS. Read more...

      Dear Change in Motion friends,
I won't be able to have the gathering this weekend due to illness, but let's meet next Sunday, March 4

TUESDAY March 6 is the primary election:  Important to turn out.
Why?  Republicans, to vote for presidential candidate.  Those fed up with the two parties who are in bed with the corporatocracy can ask for a green party ballot, wo that the Greens can get on the ballot in November.

Keystone Tar Sands Pipeline Looms Again

      Dear Friends,
Yesterday we saw another twist in the twisted Keystone XL tar sands pipeline saga -- TransCanada announced they're going to build the southern leg of the pipeline, from Cushing Oklahoma, through Texas to the Gulf of Mexico.
This is bad news, particularly for our allies along the route, some of whose land is being taken by eminent domain – a fight that is breeding some unusual alliances between environmentalists and the Tea Party. We'll do all we can to help them with the fight, which will play out mostly in Texas itself. It's obviously tough political terrain, but if you met the folks who caravanned out to Washington last summer, you know that Texans are tough people.

Meanwhile, TransCanada also announced that, as expected, they will re-apply for a presidential permit allowing them to build the pipe across the US-Canadian border. This is the leg that would bring new tar sands oil into the country - the same permit that President Obama denied last month.
There's no way to stop them from doing this—anyone can apply for a permit. But as we now know, there are plenty of ways to fight it. We'll be keeping an eagle eye on the process, making sure that the White House keeps its promises to vet not only the route across sensitive aquifers, but also the climate impacts of opening up tar sands oil. If they actually carry out a real review, we think the permit will be denied—but we've also seen how easy it is for big oil's money to compromise the process.

And that big money, of course, continues to operate in the Congress, where some senators still want to revive the border crossing without a Presidential review. We sent them 800,000 messages the week before last, and a vote is delayed for at least a few weeks. These guys are slow learners, so more phone calls and emails wouldn't hurt.

Here's what I said when I called this morning:
"Tar sands oil is a scam— it's foreign crude destined for foreign markets. We get the spills, and we get the global warming, and the oil industry gets the profits. (Also, we know that you get campaign donations as well, but that's not an excuse to endanger the planet.)"

As Bill McKibben wrote over the weekend, Keystone is one battle among many, and we'll keep calling on you for more support on other issues too. But this is an important, iconic fight—big oil knows that, which is why they are pushing so hard. And you know it, which is why so far, for once, they haven't gotten their way,
      Many thanks,
      --Duncan

      What is 350?
350 is the number that leading scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. Scientists measure carbon dioxide in "parts per million" (ppm), so 350ppm is the number humanity needs to get below as soon as possible to avoid runaway climate change. To get there, we need a different kind of PPM–a "people powered movement" that is made of people like you in every corner of the planet

WANT TO SUPPORT THE GREEN PARTY?  VOTE MARCH 6

If you feel like making a political statement against "business as usual" in this primary election, please consider picking up a Green Party Primary ballot.

If you do pick up the Green Party ballot in the March 6, 2012 Primary, make sure you write in "Joe DeMare" for U.S. Senate.  We need 500 people to write in Joe DeMare for US Senate on the primary ballot for his name to be placed on the ballot this fall, so we really do need your vote.

Find out what Joe is up to at www.Demare4senate.com and on Facebook:  JoeDeMare for Senator

Donations can be sent to "JoeDeMare for a Green Future" PO Box 773, Bowling Green, OH 43402

The best Green Party candidate for President is Jill Stein.  She is working on raising the campaign donations to allow her to get matching funds.  To this end she needs to raise over $5,000 in Ohio from people giving up to $250 which can be matched.  You can sign up to donate, find out what is going on, or just like on Facebook at www.JillStein.org

Mail donations to "Jill Stein for President" PO Box 260217, Madison, WI 53726
(There will not be a reference to Jill on the primary ballot since Ohio chose their presidential candidate to be nominated at their convention in early February 2012)

Please pass this information on to your friends and family.
      Thanks,
      Gwen Marshall

(3) This looks interesting.  It's a kind of third party effort; side stepping the nominating conventions of the R and D, this invites people to indicate their position on issues, ask hard questions of the candidates, and then vote on nominating their favorite.  Check it out.  I signed on to be a "delegate" (strictly an on-line activity, no travel, no hotel).  ellen

March 1st – March 7thHello Team Cincinnati,

Can you feel the excitement building for the President and the campaign in our area?! We are being flooded with calls and emails from people who are eager to start working for the President. Of course, we are eager for them to join us! This means that we need to schedule one-on-one meetings with them ASAP, have weekly phone banks to which to invite new volunteers, and have events planned on the statewide days of action. Taking these actions ensures that these volunteers do not fall through the cracks. This is how we build our teams!

Now is the time to empower our new volunteers and build the excellent grassroots organization we need to win in November. Let's get to work!

Focus of the Week

A Day, Week, and Month in the Life of a Neighborhood Team

We're already more than a month into 2012, which means we're two months closer to Election Day! At this stage in the campaign, a week in the life of a neighborhood team should look like this:

Daily

1:1 meetings—team leaders and core team members should schedule 1:1 meetings with new volunteers, maintenance 1:1s between team leaders and team members, or escalation 1:1s to move volunteers through the testing process. All 1:1 meetings (and the appropriate type—intro, maintenance, escalation) should be tagged in the VAN.

Testing and confirming volunteers and core team members—as potential core team members successfully complete actions and move through the testing process, their progress should be recorded in the VAN.

"I'm In" cards—teams should be collecting I'm In cards on a daily basis. You never know when your Obama buttons or bumper stickers will introduce you to a new volunteer!

Voter registration—in addition to collecting I'm In cards on a daily basis, carrying voter registration forms with you will ensure that the potential voters we encounter every day will have the opportunity to vote for President Obama in November.

Weekly

Phone banks—phone banks on the same day at the same location each week allow team members to work phone banks into their regular schedule. It also makes it easy for you and your team to invite new volunteers to your next event.

§ Who should we call at our phone banks? Our state goal is to call through our entire Tier 1 universe. To build your team, you should call people marked as priority follow-ups or tier 1 targets.

§ What are our asks? The calls we make now are to build our teams and staff our events. As such, the asks we make in our script each week should invite people to our upcoming day of action, meeting, training, or other event; our next weekly phone bank; and to have a 1:1 meeting with a team member.

§ What script should we use? Currently we're using the "Ohio Primary" script. March 6th is the Republican Primary and this is a good script to build from for your events. They can't have all the attention!

Team leader check-ins—team leaders should hold weekly conference calls or send summary emails to their core team members and volunteers to keep everyone up-to-date on team activities and progress to goals.

Days of Action—there are at least two statewide days of action each month. Every week, your team should either plan or build for the upcoming day of action. That is, the week before the day of action should be used for planning and the week of the day of action should be used for building for the event. Look at the calendar at the end of the newsletter for a schedule of the statewide days of action.

Monthly

Organizational meetings—these meetings are a great way to introduce new volunteers to your team, our movement, and the skills that we use every day as organizers.

Team meetings—each month, team leaders and core team members should sit down to discuss team goals, progress to goals, ups, challenges, and solutions.

Stay Informed about Fracking: a pressing local issue

By Debbie Westheimer

SW Ohio No Frack Forum is a growing group of concerned citizens around the subject of hydro-fracturing aka fracking. Many of us first convened in Yellow Springs in early September where NeoGap organized an opportunity for Ohioans to meet with people in their counties who shared concerns. Neo Gap stands for Network for Oil and Gas Accountability and Protection. Their main area of concern is in NE Ohio. Since the Yellow Springs meeting- a core group of people have organized here in Cincinnati- mostly planning public meetings to education ourselves and others. Our first open forum was in November with U.C. Geology Professor David Nash, Assistant Geology Professor – Amy Townsend-Small and Deborah Kittner – PHD candidate. David shared maps and helped us learn the location of different types of shale deposits. We learned there is potential for air and water pollution caused by fracking and possible seismic activity.

Feb 21st's meeting was presented by Mike Miller- U.C. professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences and Environmental Studies.  He supports clean water and is Vice President of Rivers Unlimited, the oldest and first statewide non-profit organization working for clean water in Ohio. The meeting began with Mike's power point informational presentation. Two points made are: Cincinnati is down stream and we eat food from areas that are being actively drilled or injected with wastewater. With 177 wells- there's bound to be hazards- leaks and overflow.  After Mike's talk and a question and answer period, attendees had four break out sessions they could attend: Watershed Stewardship, Sharing Strategies to Fight Fracking, Policy and Organizing and Education. If you have an interest in learning about next meetings- contact Debbie Westheimer: 732-6355 or debbie@westheimers.net

Would also be happy to send minutes from the break out groups.

Tell City Council to Revise code on Stormwater Management

Dear Ellen,

Did you know every time it rains our water ways are threatened by stormwater pollution? Stormwater washes heavy metals, oils, garbage, sediment, and salts into our streams and rivers. In fact, stormwater is the most significant source of water pollution in Ohio. In the city of Cincinnati, stormwater contributes to over 14 billion gallons of sewage overflows a year! We can protect our communities from stormwater through green infrastructure, water reuse, and stream buffers, but only if City Council revises the City Code.

Please tell Cincinnati City Council that you care about clean water!

Did you know in the City of Cincinnati it is illegal to divert stormwater from the sewer? Technically installing rain barrels, rain gardens, and cisterns is against the City's Code. Controling stormwater runoff will reduce overflows, reduce utility costs, and keep our water ways clean! Currently City Council is considering modifying the code to help control stormwater. Sierra Club has 4 recommendations that council should include to keep our streams clean.

Tell Council to Keep Sewage out of Our Streams!

Thank you for taking action,

Marilyn Wall

Disability, like questions of race, gender, and class, is one of the most provocative topics among theorists and philosophers today. This volume, situated at the intersection of feminist theory and disability studies, addresses questions about the nature of embodiment, the meaning of disability, the impact of public policy on those who have been labeled disabled, and how we define the norms of mental and physical ability. The essays here bridge the gap between theory and activism by illuminating structures of power and showing how historical and cultural perceptions of the human body have been informed by and contributed to the oppression of women and disabled people.
