SECTION ONE: TABLE NOTES
(What kind of gathering/sharing/learning together would you like to happen at the Lloyd House?  Ideas wanted. e.)

Hi Everyone!
taken just now, working on the Virtual Salon
Fanchon says I should hold the camera UP.  Hmmm.

Yes Magazine (see: http://www.yesmagazine.org/ ) is the brain child of David Korten.  An inspiring quarterly, they report on what is going right in our society, reform movements, success stories, and this issue is all about taking back power for the people from the corporations.  Very interesting.  In line with this, see the action on Thurs March 1 to protest Duke Energy paying zero federal tax on their huge corporate profits.  I asked Bentley Davis about this, and she responded, also interestingly, in the Articles section (LETTERS, see below).

How about this?  Let's start a new meme

from Wikipedia: A meme ( /ˈmm/meem)[1]) is "an idea, behavior or style that spreads from person to person within a culture."[2] A meme acts as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols or practices, which can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals or other imitable phenomena. Supporters of the concept regard memes as cultural analogues to genes in that they self-replicate, mutate and respond to selective pressures.[3]

that states something like this:  non-partisan patriotism is needed now... the value of cooperating with each other to really solve our problems, build a better society, get things done, rather than squabbling among ourself to no good end whatsoever.  To hell with polarization.  Up with cooperation!

So I sent in my absentee ballot this week (party primary, March 6... if you don't have your absentee ballot, go to the polls!).  Voted for Luke Brockmeier for Statehouse Rep, Democratic ticket.  Bothers me that his chief opponent, Denise Driehaus' record as a pro-lifer (anti abortion) is not well enough known.  Pass the word!
Also voted for Liz Ping for Democratic State Central Committee (rather than Yvette Simpson), because she impressed me in her unsuccessful bid for statehouse rep a couple of years ago.  for Supreme Court justice I voted for Fanon Rucker over Wm. O'Neill because Bentley Davis recommended him.  Said she likes his positions, work and he runs a much better campaign than O'Neill has done.

Incidentally, the St. John's Bible exhibit at Mt. St. Joseph was fabulous!  Closes at the end of the month.
Hugs to everyone!

Ellen

SECTION TWO: ACTIVITIES, OPPORTUNITIES

===============================================================

    •  March 6 primary coming up.
It's important to vote in this primary.  For Democrats, not just Republicans.

      Friday Night Salons
          You are invited

From Wikipedia: A salon is a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host (Womens Way of Ohio and Kentucky), held partly to amuse one another and partly to refine taste and increase our knowledge of the participants through conversation. (Yes, real conversations) These gatherings often consciously followed Horace's definition of the aims of poetry, "either to please or to educate" ("aut delectare aut prodesse est"). Look for our Salon each Friday evening during the entire month of February from 6:30PM to 8:30PM. Come to one or come to all. This will be held in a relaxed comfortable area of Women Writing For A Change located at 6906 Plainfield Road Cincinnati. This will be a potluck experience around a large table as we "enjoy" the philosophers (that would be you) of our time while sharing food. Join us! This is a free event, open to all. Donations for the lights and electric will always be appreicated.

      When:  Each Friday in February
                 6:30 to 8:30PM

Potluck to enjoy by all, bring something for yourself and a little extra for someone else.  Hosted by Bev Bowers, of Woman's Way.

      POETRY IN CINCINNATI
      FIRST FRIDAY AT OM CAFE

Hello, fellow poets and poetry lovers:

February is a short month, even in a leap year, so the upcoming First Friday will be here before we know it.  This month we will be hosting a reading by the poets of the Cincinnati Writer's Project.

For more information on the Cincinnati Writer's Project, check out this link:  http://www.cincinnatiwriters.org.

The Poetry Critique group is part of the Cincinnati Writer's Project and has been meeting 2 Saturdays a month for many years to work on our craft together.

Featured readers this First Friday will include Susan Scardina, Jerry Judge, Kate Fadick, Karen George, Gwyneth Stewart, and maybe a few others.  I hope you will come hear us and perhaps stay to learn a little more about the Cincinnati Writer's Project.

We will meet at 7:30 at Aquarius Star/Om Cafe in Clifton, as always, and the reading will begin around 8:00.

      Hope to see you there!

      Gwyneth Stewart

WANT TO SUPPORT THE GREEN PARTY?  VOTE MARCH 6

If you feel like making a political statement against "business as usual" in this primary election, please consider picking up a Green Party Primary ballot.

If you do pick up the Green Party ballot in the March 6, 2012 Primary, make sure you write in "Joe DeMare" for U.S. Senate.  We need 500 people to write in Joe DeMare for US Senate on the primary ballot for his name to be placed on the ballot this fall, so we really do need your vote.

Find out what Joe is up to at www.Demare4senate.com and on Facebook:  JoeDeMare for Senator

Donations can be sent to "JoeDeMare for a Green Future" PO Box 773, Bowling Green, OH 43402

The best Green Party candidate for President is Jill Stein.  She is working on raising the campaign donations to allow her to get matching funds.  To this end she needs to raise over $5,000 in Ohio from people giving up to $250 which can be matched.  You can sign up to donate, find out what is going on, or just like on Facebook at www.JillStein.org

Mail donations to "Jill Stein for President" PO Box 260217, Madison, WI 53726
(There will not be a reference to Jill on the primary ballot since Ohio chose their presidential candidate to be nominated at their convention in early February 2012)

Please pass this information on to your friends and family.
      Thanks,
      Gwen Marshall

The annual Macy's Arts Sampler presented by ArtsWave will cover three Saturdays this winter, February 11
, February 25 and March 10. More than 16,000 visitors attended Sampler performances in 2011. This year, the events will be condensed into three Saturdays featuring almost 100 performances over the three days. All events are free and open to the public thanks to the generous sponsorship of Macy's.

Macy's Arts Sampler, presented by ArtsWave, celebrates the creative things —theater, dance, museums, music, and festivals — happening in large and small ways throughout our region. These weekends are great opportunities for families, friends, and neighbors to connect with one another and experience the arts through free events.

      (2) STOP KEYSTONE OIL SANDS PIPELINE !

      FROM AL GORE

In the next few days, the U.S. Senate will vote to determine the fate of a pipeline that would link a vast tar sands deposit in Alberta, Canada to refineries on the Texas Gulf Coast. The construction of the pipeline has been blocked once by President Obama, who refused to buckle to pressure from Congress and industry to cut short the environmental review. Unfortunately, they are at it again.

If approved and built, this pipeline, Keystone XL, would carry one of the most carbon-intensive sources of oil on the planet.

For the next 24 hours, The Climate Reality Project is joining with350.org, MoveOn, League of Conservation Voters, Patagonia, Sierra Club, Energy Action Coalition and others to garner 500,000 signatures in a community-wide effort against the pipeline. Bill McKibben of 350.orgwill be on The Colbert Report tonight and will update the world on our progress -- so sign now, and then pass it on. We've come together before to stop production of this dangerous pollutant -- and with your help, we can do it again:

Join me in telling the U.S. Senate to say NO to one of the most carbon-intensive oils on the planet:

      http://forms.climaterealityproject.org/keystone

If you care about the climate, you have to care about stopping this dangerous pollutant and the pipeline that carries it. After extensive research, the EPA estimates that annual carbon pollution from the Keystone XL pipeline could be at least 82% higher than average crude refined in America -- if not more.

What does that number really mean? That's the same amount of pollution as adding 4.8 million cars to our roads: an additional 27 million metric tons of carbon pollution.

Instead of pouring money into the production of more dirty oil, we need to work with Canada to invest in clean energy and energy efficiency. Clean energy is already the fastest growing industry in the U.S. and one of the fastest growing industries around the world.

It doesn't matter where you live, or if the pipeline crosses into your home state. An increase of carbon pollution anywhere leads to climate change everywhere.

I just returned from an expedition to the Antarctic Peninsula, where the temperature has risen by over 8 degrees in the last 60 years. And more than that, the glacial retreat caused by this temperature increase means sea level is rising and dangerous changes are happening around the globe. To put it simply: it means we are all living on thin ice.

Take a minute and sign this important petition and tell the Senate to say NO to Keystone XL:

      http://forms.climaterealityproject.org/keystone

      Thanks,

      Al Gore

Ellen, maybe some of your organizing friends around campus (or elsewhere in Cinci's area) might be a match for this greenpeace job (see below), if you haven't seen it yet...  too bad Mike Murphy isn't around, with his dedication to organizing sustainability groups on Peak Oil... or some of his group from your Wednesday night potluck Lloyd House Salons....

My name is Carolyn Auwaerter and I'm helping to hire a field organizer in Cincinnati for Greenpeace to work on coal.  I heard of your organization from Anjuli Kronheim, a friend who worked on Issue 2 in 2009.

Could you please pass the job description below onto your networks and send any names of people you think I should follow up with?

It's been difficult for me to find job posting venues for Cincinnati/southwest Ohio so if you have any suggestions for me, I would greatly appreciate that as well.  In addition to sending the job to career centers at Cincinnati colleges, I've only found Not-for-Profit News.

Thanks,
Carolyn

From Jim Shenk of IMAGO
TWO ITEMS:
1. Imago presents a discussion series around Voluntary Simplicity.
2. Houses in Eco-village available that need rehabbed.

IMAGO PRESENTS ECOLOGY ON TAP II
A STUDY COURSE ON VOLUNTARY SIMPLICITY

What does it mean?
Why is it important?
Why is it so hard to do?
How can I move in that direction.

Where:  Park and Vine, 1202 Main St., downtown Cincinnati
When:  Feb. 29, March 14, March 28
Time: 6:30 to 8:00pm
Fee: $10/session or $25 for series

At this time of Lent, at this time of self-reflecting we are holding this
discussion on Voluntary Simplicity.  We will look at a way of life that
reflects our personal values rather then just following the norms of our
culture.

The sessions will be based on readings by renowned theorists.  Growth takes
place in discussing material with other like minded people, in this
comfortable, informal setting and offering for donation.  Beer will be
available, brewed by Christopher Smith.

Reservations: Call 921-1932 or go to www.imagoearth.org

HOUSES NEEDING REHAB

There are a number of houses in the eco-villages that could be purchased
very cheaply and renovated.  Our preference is someone who would like to buy
one and live there.  But, if you want to invest in one of these houses,
rehab and sell to a homeowner, that would be great as well.  The houses
range from $9,000 to $35,000.  None of them are in terrible shape.

If interested e-mail me at jschenk@imagoearth.org or call me at
513-921-1932.

"Urban Village" project  and Russian "Spaces of love" movement reviewed by Randall Ball

Hello Rob Sheil,

I was inspired by your Core Change* "Urban Village" group's presentation.  I
would particularly like to be kept informed of your group's progress, and/or
to be on your working group's distribution list if possible.  I am on the
Core Change - "Document Creation" team, responsible for articulating our
values & vision, etc.

You may be interested in a powerful vision coming out of Russia - of
eco-villages consisting of sometimes hundreds of connected, individual 2.5
acre, fully food and energy self-sufficient garden Paradise-like domains
(called family "Spaces of Love").  See www.RingingCedars.com and these two
international networking site: www.RingingCedarsRevolution.com &
http://ringingcedarsnewzealand.ning.com/ .  A compilation of related
material about all this is on my own website:
http://torque.heritagewebdesign.com/~paradi27/cart/index.php?main_page=index
&cPath=139&zenid=936b30011cd8080d06ce9b168978bf21 .
(See "Anastasia Movement")

This series of 10 books (one hasn't yet been translated into English) has
inspired this now world-wide movement (the USA is lagging far behind the
world, particularly Russia, on this one).  I personally resonate with what
another reader said: "After reading this RCS series, all the other books out
there simply aren't worth the paper they are printing on".

....

"The hardest person to free is someone who refuses to recognize that he is a
slave"!

....

Since being introduced to these books two years ago, I have re-read the
series multiple times.  While extremely easy to read, they still continue to
take me deeper each time.  These books communicate the most personally and
culturally transformative vision and coherent plan for a beautiful future
for humanity that I am aware of - and your group is focusing on the key
ingredient.

I am interested in exploring, with anyone interested, how to best adapt
these examples to Cincinnati; and I heard at least a bit of this "core"
concept in where your group is heading.

Thank you for the work you and your group is doing.....

Randall

Re. the action against Duke energy Thurs March 1 (see above in Activities) I asked Bentley Davis this:

On Wed, Feb 22, 2012 at 1:54 PM, Ellen Bierhorst <ellenbierhorst@lloydhouse.com> wrote:

I will publicize this action.

Bentley, why didn't they pay tax on their earnings?  Doesn't this pertain to the federal gov't tax code?
I'll support the action, BUT seems like it is the tax code that needs to be reformed.  We can't ask a dumb corporation to voluntarily pay taxes they don't legally owe.

What's your thought?

ellen

Bentley responded:
Thanks Ellen.

The real purpose isn't to have Duke volunteer to pay more, but to have the tax code changed.  These companies spend a phenomenal amount of money in lobbyists to make sure that loopholes and giveaways make it their way even if they are making billions of dollars in profit.  Small businesses with moderate profits don't get such loopholes.
If you are interested, there is a lengthy, detailed report that can be found here:  http://ctj.org/corporatetaxdodgers/  Duke isn't alone, many of the energy companies are in the same financial place -- lots of profits, but no taxes.  GE is another one.  But so is FedEx and Verizon.  While we are singling out Duke in Cincinnati, the message is that all these corporations should be paying their fair share.  We can't be talking about "shared sacrifice" when discussing the federal budget, while giving these giant corporations a free ride.
Best,
Bentley

From Diana Martens
Just returned from the opening of the office. Warren had heard that it was opening at 6:00 instead of 7:00 so we went early. A very good thing!  It was packed and by 7:00 they were not letting people in. Mayor Mallory spoke first, then the Senator from Cincinnati and a good number of powerful experience woman who work on Obama's campaign four years ago. Lauren Jones, the regional field director, is impressive.  Big note: the office is already too small.  A good sign, but with only two rooms it was not large enough for all of the people tonight. And this goes until 10:00 tonight!

A personal note is that it is so nice to be surrounded by Democrats in such large number, ( I would guess 200 people were there), and to hear positive speeches rather than negative rhetoric.

ON THE SUSAN G. KOMEN AFFAIR

It's a new era.  Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street, now the uprising that prompted the Susan B Komen Foundation to reverse it's black-lining Planned Parenthood over abortion phobia.  I like the article here
by Seth Cohen.  I like the notion that an organization (Komen) can build a network, but it can't own or control it.
And while I'm talking about social networking, let me soap-box a minute about inflammatory email chains that get forwarded all over the place by people who accept that some outrageous thing or other is true just because it sounds likely and tweaks a raw nerve.  Let's check the facts, friends!  before we forward these things to all and sundry on our  cyber rolodex.  Always check at Snopes.com or other fact checking websites before forwarding something calling for a constitutional amendment, etc. etc.  If Democracy is to work, we must be responsible about the information we pass on.
