Ok, so I figure most of the people I know who want to hear me read from my new books already have, but maybe you haven't heard Michael Henson for awhile! He and I are reading on this Sunday, December 4 at 1 pm at Cincinnati Friends Meeting,  8075 Keller Road, Cincinnati, OH 45243 (Yes, where Owen and I were married six years ago Dec 10!) Big thanks to Joan Effertz for putting it together..

Speaking of gifts,  Want a cool gift for $30 that is worth $312?  Or a fantastic gift for $230 that is really worth $624?
Give them an introductory 4 lessons to the Alexander Technique with Ellen Bierhorst, Ph.D. ($30) Or a terrific introduction: 8 half-hour lessons for $230!  (offer designed for Alexander newbies.)
I'll make you a handsome gift certificate you can present to your special someone.
The Alexander Technique has been proved effective for back pain (e.g.Brittish Medical Journal study  here: http://www.amsatonline.org/research ) and is so valuable in enhancing performance that ever major conservatory sports a faculty member who is an A.T. teacher.  Great for athletes, and anyone wanting to optimize their life.  I have a special interest in the geriatric application of the technique and have a number of students who are over 65.  Plus... it's fun!  Ellen 513 221 1289

Healing the Ties that Bind:
Transforming our Family Legacy
Saturday, December 3, 2011
9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Hi All:
Anne Becker, Paulette Meier and I are repeating a COLLABORATIVE constellation workshop we presented last spring.  Through work in the field, writing and chant, we will be able all of us to look at some present-day ill health or separated family or destructive pattern which might be traced to unknown or even intentionally hidden behavior of our parents and grandparents and on back.

This work called by many names now and evolved into many modalities was given the name Family Constellation Therapy by Bert Hellinger in the 90's.  This is one site among many if you want more information:

It is clear in my own life that my ancestors are players in my life, people I must account for.  If you have that inkling too, come join us.

Anne has so much enthusiasm for this work.  Paulette's voice comes out of the center of the earth and I have both a love of the written word and a deep love for this amazing work.

I have attached the flier.  In Paulette's words:  Come Join The Circle.

All is well, Valerie

We will use writing, meditative chanting, and the mindfulness-based tools of
Family Constellation Work to explore and honor the powerful energy we all
carry from our ancestors. We will look at our family systems with new eyes,
seeking to release limiting beliefs and entanglements so we can move into the
future at peace with our past.
Registration is due by November 30. Cost is $65.00.  We will gather between 9:00 and 9:30, and
the workshop will begin promptly at 9:30. Please bring a brown bag lunch.

ARTICLES AND LETTERS
..............................
- "Ten things Monsanto does NOT want you to  know about GMO (genetically modified organisms)", critiqued by biology prof Dr. Anna Sher

Critique of "10 Things Monstanto Does not want you to know" by OrganicConsumers.org (a political advocacy group)(see their blurb below) (or to read online go here: http://www.google.com/cse?cx=008989212650198335376%3Ajvfh-us_eqo&ie=UTF-8&q=monsanto&sa=Go&siteurl=organicconsumers.org%2F#gsc.tab=0&gsc.q=monsanto&gsc.page=1)

Introduction:  Basically sound, except for the leading sentence, which is misleading and fear-mongering: "genetic engineering is a radical technology that breaks down genetic barriers between humans, plants and animals".   "Radical" is an unsupported judgement call, and the 'breaking down barriers' appeals to our sense of order in the world (and may invoke in some images of people having sex with monkeys).  They do not define what 'barriers' they are talking about, or even why such barriers would be inherently good or bad.  All living things share the same genetic system, so biologically speaking, there are actually fewer 'barriers' than one might expect.  It is likely that the author is referring to one application of genetic engineering, in which the code from one organism is placed in another, often with medical applications; for example, making bananas produce vaccines so that they are cheaper to produce for developing countries (e.g. for the Hep B virus: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/04/070430224426.htm).  Another example is making plants (or yeast r bacteria) produce insulin for people with diabetes (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6518787.stm).

"1) No GMO Labeling Laws in the US:" As far as I know, this is true, although I can't vouch for their numbers, they seem reasonable (i.e." 70% of processed foods in the US now contain GMO").

" 2) Lack of Adequate Safety Testing" This is a judgement call, given that there is substantial testing of anything in the US that passes through our lips, including FDA guidelines for testing safety of GMO's.  This testing is more regulated and rigorous for drugs, of course, but there is a good rationale that GMO products should be as rigorous.

"3) Monsanto Puts Small Farmers out of Business"- This is likely true, given their power whenever there is a lawsuit that involves a small farmer, although this is probably not purposeful on their part, and likely is rare.

"4) Monsanto Products Pollute the Developing World" - yup, although this is not a GMO issue, per se.

"5) Monsanto Blocking Government Regulations"- Yup, they are big business, and as such have tremendous power to influence regulations even at the federal level.

"6) Monsanto Guilty of False Advertising"- Roundup does break down over time- it does, in fact, degrade according to my colleague Dr. Scott Nissen, who is a professor at CSU who studies such things for a living.  That said, "biodegradable" has a very specific meaning- it does not surprise me that it would not apply- their marketing department is likely not run by scientists.  I don't know that this is such a significant issue however- not at the level of most of the others, anyhow.

"7) Consumers reject Bovine Growth Hormone"- Yup.  But whether this reflects real understanding by consumers or just fear mongering isn't at all clear to me.  More compelling would be if this was something about the danger of rBGH- that it isn't is telling.

"8) GMO crops do not increase yields" - I'm not familiar with the report, and they don't provide any citations (always troubling tome), but I think they probably misunderstood it to some degree.  The appeal of GMO's and other products that Monsanto sells is that they do increase yields (i.e. how many bushels or lbs per acre), sometimes to really incredible degrees, but the issue is at what cost?  Many farmers, and probably this report, decided that even though yields are increased, the cost to the environment, the economic cost of developing and using them, and other costs make the increase in yield not worth it.

"9) Monsanto Controls US Soy Market"- likely true.  But again, they don't explain what the problem is here.

"10) GMO foods may lead to food allergies" This may be true, but the rationale they use to explain it here is terribly flawed.  Correlation is not causation.

I find this flier sprinkled with truth, with a heavy dose of fear-mongering rather than enlightening.  Any document that presumes to present scientific information but lacks citations is problematic and likely biased.  A quick Google search yielded an interesting peer-reviewed review of a book critiquing Monsanto that came out very recently (see below).  Apparently, this in-depth look at Monsanto suffered some of the same problems as I've outlined here.

Given that Monsanto certainly has it's problems, as do GMO's, I'd be very interested in a more unbiased review of the company's products and business practices if such a thing is possible.  That the detractors come across as hysterical and don't support their statements, does not help convince those of us who are interested in what is actually true, rather than what supports preconceived ideas.

From Dee Graham
Diane Sawyer (ABC, World News) is challenging Americans to purchase at least one "Made In America" gift this Christmas (seehttp://abcnews.go.com/WN/mailform?id=14998335).  Her research reveals that the average family spends $704 for gifts each Christmas.  She says, if every family spends just $64 on a "Made in America" gift, 200,000 jobs will be created.  If all our the gifts we share were made in America, it would create 4.6 million jobs.  She asks, will you accept her challenge?

You can go to her web site-- http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/business/2011/11/made-in-america-gift-ideas/ -- for ideas for Made In America gifts, as these products can be hard to find but typically cost no more than ones made in China.

In my opinion, Diane Sawyer is doing more to help create jobs than anyone in Congress, and she is doing so by challenging us in exactly this way.  Will you join me in meeting her challenge?  You might think of it as a Christmas gift for America, and a Christmas gift for fellow Americans who desperately need our help.

Thank you and Merry Christmas!
Dee
