Panel on "Innovations in Voting"
Wednesday, October 20, 2010, 7 - 9 PM
Xavier University Schiff Family Conference Center, Cintas Center, 1624 Herald Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45207. Open to the public.
Presented by the Woman's City Club, this forum comes just in time for this election season -- when progressives are worrying about getting people to the polls and voting for candidates striving to improve the lives of everyone, not just the well off.
An expert panel will elaborate on innovative voting methods that endeavor to overcome low voter turnout and inequalities in the exercise of the citizen's right to vote. Among the reforms to be discussed are mail-in balloting, mandatory voting, and weekend voting, methods proposed and practiced in other states and countries. The panel may address other topics affecting citizen access to voting and voting choice.
Jane Anderson, Political Science Department, UC, will moderate. Panelists are Gene Beaupre, Director for Government Relations, XU; Michael Cioffi, attorney, Blank Rome LLP; and William Woods, President, AIR, Inc. & chair, Common Cause Ohio. Caleb Faux, Executive Director, Hamilton County Democratic Party and Alex Triantafilou, Chairman, Hamilton County Republican Party will respond briefly to the speakers' remarks from the point of view of their political parties. Lori Nuckolls, lawyer and WCC board member, organized the event.
This is the schedule – 7 PM, registration and socializing; panel and respondents; 7:30 – 8:30; 8:30, time for audience questions and comments. So come and bring your diverse perspectives and searching questions to share!
If you're not familiar with Woman's City Club, check us out at our website: womanscityclub.org. We would love to see you out here Saturday! :)
Best,

I did 4.5 hours of canvassing last weekend and it was inspiring. I handed out lit, I knocked on doors and talked to anyone who answered. It was clear that minds were changed by my personal appeal. I am not the most knowledgeable person, but I sincerely and passionately believe that we should send the Dem. Ticket into office this November. If you are concerned, please know that canvassing works! Ellen
Canvass for Driehaus, Fisher, and other Dem. Candidates EVERY Saturday at 11 or at 1:00 . Show up at the office at 11 am or 1 pm. (I'll be doing Saturdays at 11.) This is the MOST effective way to help the campaign. So important to support the President's team. So important to elect Democrats to the leadership positions in Columbus because they will do the redistrictingfor the next decade! ellen

Now we have regular hours from 1 PM to 9 PM, Monday through Saturday. Right now, we're using 614-477-6835 as the "office number." Our biggest need right now is to get volunteers to staff the office, so we have to call lots of people to get them to come by and sign up.
Thanks for your interest,
Mary-Pat Hester
Want to do a terrific service? Stop in the HQ at Knowlton's Corner between 1 and 8 pm, help them make calls. Fun and important. Ellen
Dear Wonderful Martin Luther King Chorale Singers,
It is the time of year when we gather to imagine the world Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was able to envision.
King saw the beauty that emerges when we all become drum majors for justice, when we step out in freedom's name, when we work for peace and religious tolerance, when we speak out against bigotry and endless spending on war rather than the social uplift of all people.
We have much work to do. Let us join together in song to broadcast hope and courage with a message bigger than each of us individually. Let's raise our joyfilled voices for justice. Let's send out a ringing, resonant choral endorsement of empathy and compassion.
Walk the Journey! Pass the Torch! Embrace the Dream

I am having a blast here in my second year of teaching the Alexander Technique! Unbelievably, a full calendar since the launch of my practice in late June 2009.
Fantastic fee deal (limited time only): First lesson free; second through 4th lessons only $10. After that, only $50/lesson if you buy a package of 4 at a time, prepaid. * The real fee is $78 per lesson. I am interested in "turning on" as many people as possible to this wonderful learning. Good for pain, for performance improvement in the arts, athletics, ... And finally, good for personal development. It has definite geriatric benefit as well.
You can read about my own experiences and find links to other sites here:

Call and make an appointment or to discuss it with me. 513 221 1289.

Farm Family Harrassed for Producing Raw Milk: Please help
(Gary Oaks is an Amish dairy farmer, exceedingly gracious and sweet man, who has been milking his 20 Jersey cows and disbursing their excellent raw milk to people who own shares in the herd. I used to get his milk. Now have easier access to raw milk through Dan Kremer. Gary has been hounded to death by misguided sheriffs and ag dept. goons for years now. Below, news of more harrassment. They deserve support. Ellen)
Subject: URGENT - KY Health Department Looking at Harassing Raw Milk Farmers throughout state
To: doubleocowshare@gmail.com
We have received word this week from some underground sources that one of the last items reviewed in our state offices was that the Milk Safety Branch (a department within the Department of Health and Human Services) is being charged with the duty of doing on-farm inspections of all cowshare operations. Allow me to be very clear that this department has no authority over cowshare programs per the State of KY statutes and its sole reason for doing these inspections is to intimidate/harass farmers into ceasing operations.
The only thing that can stop this action from taking place is an outcry from those of you that belong to a cowshare program and also those that you know that do not get milk, but feel that this is a personal rights violation in not allowing citizens to choose their own food items. We need you to contact the governor and your state representatives and demand that this be stopped. We ask that you not identify yourself as being aligned with a particular cowshare program, but rather as a citizen that demands his/her freedom in choosing the foods that are the best for your family.
We have already consulted directly with Pete Kennedy, who is the chief legal counsel with the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund. He has recommended that we remove our farm from the RealMilk.com listing of farms that supply raw milk. In conjunction with this, we have also made our website non-accessible for the time being.
Many of you were with us through the last government raids and know the physical toll it took on your farmer. He can not go through that again. We must be very honest with you that if you do not issue this outcry and make your voices heard and another raid or "inspection" is endured, the Double O Farms will more than likely close its doors as our family has endured all that it can at the hands of our government to protect your rights. It is now your turn to take a stand.
Contact information for the State of KY representatives and senators can be found at http://www.lrc.ky.gov/whoswho/email.htm. You can contact Governor Beshear through http://www.governor.ky.gov/contact/contact.htm.
This is the information for our state (KY). However, you need to know that this issue is heating up nationally once again. http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,2017205,00.html?xid=rss-topstories is the link to a recent TIME magazine article on this very issue.
Thank you in advance for taking an active role in protecting your rights and your farmer,

Pat Bruns for State Bd. Of Education
(my esteemed friend Diana Herbe urges support for a fine candidate. Ellen)
Friends and Acquaintances:
Pat Bruns is a personal friend. I taught with her in the Northwest Local School District. She was a fantastic teacher (she is retired). She was dedicated, hardworking, and inspiring. She is a fantastic leader. She was President of our local union subsequent to my term. She has been involved in politics as a hard worker on behalf of others. This is her first foray into running for office. She has the backing of the Ohio Education Association and the local Democratic Club (but don't hold that against her, if that is not your persuasion). Please take a little time to look at her campaign information here:

Atia goes to D.C. March
hi, ellen,
I went to D.C. for One Nation Working Together rally on Saturday. IJPC - a great people that need our support - organized the bus to our capitol. we left at 10pm friday, spent a day at the rally and departed for home at 6pm on saturday.
the AP reporter told me that the mood and atmosphere were distinctly different from the Tbaggers' rally. she said there was positive, solidarity and happy feel to the gathering, even tho she said she sympathized with the honest concerns of Tbaggers. puke!
IMO, this was like huge picnic, most diverse and inclusive gathering imaginable, smiles on every face, probably reinforced by incredibly beautiful weather. definitely, very inspiring, and i hope it shows on Nov 2.
pink code, vets against the war, anti war groups, quakers, all types of unions, immigrant groups, islamic groups, civil rights groups, they were all there and all the others i didn't see. it was like watching UN on parade. democrats are truly a giant umbrella for diversity! if you want to see it for yourself, go to

OR

sadly, some people (who knows how many more?) were prevented from going to the rally:
STATEMENT ON MASSACHUSETTS BUSES TO ONE NATION RALLY
Due to circumstances beyond the control of the sponsoring organizations (1199/SEIU, NAACP, Jobs With Justice and others) most of the 72 buses scheduled to go to Washington were not able to go. The bus company canceled buses just hours before we were scheduled to leave. Still, more than 1,500 people from Massachusetts were able to attend the historic rally of which we will have more news soon. We apologize for any inconvenience and will be pursuing action against the bus company.

Five Ways the Democrats Can Avoid a Catastrophe and Pull Off the Mother of All Upsets
Friday, October 1st, 2010
Friends,
The election is one month from tomorrow and, yes, it looks hopeless. November 2nd -- the day the Dems are expected to crash and burn.
Sadly, it's a situation the Democrats have brought upon themselves -- even though the majority of them didn't create the mess we're in. But they've had over a year and a half to start getting the job done to fix it. Instead, they've run scared ever since they took power. To many, the shellacking they're about to receive is one they deserve.
But if you're of a mindset that believes a return to 2001-2008 would be sheer insanity, then you probably agree we've got no choice but to save the Democrats from themselves.
Memo To: President Obama and the Democratic Party Leadership
From: Michael Moore
Subject: 5 Things Dems Can Do to Turn It Around by November 2nd
1. Immediate Wall-to-Wall TV Ads, Internet Videos, and Appearances Hammering Who the Hell Put Us in the Misery We're In.
We Americans have very short attention spans (Quick: Who Won the Oscar for Best Picture last year? The World Series? Exactly.). People need to be reminded over and over that it was the REPUBLICANS who concocted and led the unnecessary invasion of two countries, putting us in our longest war ever, wars that will eventually cost us over $3 trillion. Bush and Co. also caused the biggest collapse of our economy since the Great Depression. I don't know a single person in Hollywood who wouldn't shoot and produce those spots for you for FREE. Dems: Do not pull a single punch on this. Quit being a bunch of wusses and let the bastards have it! The public will be astonished that you've found your courage and your spine. We expect you to be Muhammad Ali, not Ally McBeal.
2. Indict the Criminals.
Announce that the Justice Department will seek indictments against both those who caused the economic collapse and those who became war profiteers. Call it for what it is: organized crime. Use the RICO statutes. Use the basic laws that make fraud of any kind a crime. Get in the face of those who stole the billions, make them pay for it -- and the people will love you. We want Dirty Harry, not Dirty Dancing.
3. Announce a Moratorium on All Family Home Foreclosures.
Last month (August) there were more home foreclosures than in any month in U.S. history. Worse than any month in the worst year ever, 2009. The bleeding hasn't stopped -- it's only gotten worse. And now, this week, two of the largest crime organizations who are throwing hundreds of thousands of people out of their homes (GMAC and JPMorgan Chase) have been forced to momentarily stop doing this. It turns out, they don't really have the paperwork to prove they actually own these houses! It's madness. So if you do one thing for the middle class this week, do this. It will take an hour of your time to draw up the decree and issue it. We'd rather watch "It's a Wonderful Life" than "Poltergeist."
4. Announce a New 21st Century WPA.
"Who's hiring? THE GOVERNMENT IS HIRING!" Put together a simple plan to hire enough people to repair our roads, fix up our aging schools, and rebuild our infrastructure. Fund this by taxing the richest 1% who have more financial wealth than 95% of Americans combined! Unemployment will drop to 5%. Can you pass it? Well, you sure can't unless you try! And as you're trying, announce that you will force the Republican senators (who until now simply have had to say they "intended" to filibuster in order to kill a bill) to have to actually filibuster! Make them stand on the floor of the Senate and read from the phone book 24/7. They won't last a day. And America will see them for who they really are.
5. Declare That No Democrat Will Accept ANY Wall Street Money in the Next Election Cycle.
Pick a day in the coming week. Have all your fellow Democrats in Congress stand in front of the Capitol (with President Obama) and pledge that if America allows you to retain control of Congress, none of you will take a penny from Wall Street for the 2012 election. Instead, promise to accept donations of only $2, $5 and $10. You will also pledge not to take a job as a lobbyist or lawyer for ANY corporation for ten years after you leave Congress. The message will be a powerful one to the average American fed up with corrupt political hacks. Act like Honest Abe, not Fast Freddie -- and see what happens.
And here are two bonus suggestions: Use what sense of humor you have and go after these candidates and their agenda with all the hilarious ridicule they deserve. And quit complaining about "the base" not doing enough to help you. You want help? Do something this week to earn it. I've offered five suggestions. I'm sure the rest of "the base" has a few more.
Yours,
Michael Moore

Political Notes:
I have a couple suggestions for Salonistas:
First, if you haven't done so already, request your absentee ballot or starting Tuesday Sept 28, vote early at the Board of Elections downtown. Voting early helps everyone. Early voting means that you are no longer contacted by campaigns (at least the savvy ones collecting that data). That means no more phone calls, door knocks, or literature for you. So, you get relieved of that hassle. But it also helps your favorite candidates and causes because they no longer feel the need to spend time and money on contacting you – and can focus their efforts on those who haven't already voted. Of course, to vote early, you have to have already made up your mind about which candidates are best. If you have any questions on the candidates, please contact me.
Second, I know that the salon is hosting phone banks. If you have any more time to volunteer – for a candidate or an issue based organization; please do so. The right wing has received unprecedented amounts of money after the Citizens United decision of the Supreme Court unleashing corporate campaign giving. We need to win the old fashioned way – volunteers talking to voters. If you are interested in volunteering, but don't know with whom; again, contact me and I can match you with the organization that best matches your interests.
(And THIS week, when you canvass you can both register a non-registered voter and apply for them to receive an absentee ballot. This is the only week like this. I'll be out canvassing on Saturday! Ellen)
Finally, don't give up hope!!!! Progressives need to drop the "Eeyore" attitude and return to being energetic and optimistic.
Again, if you have any questions on political matters, please feel free to contact me.
Best,
Bentley

Monsanto: $8.7 million.
The National Pork Producers Council: $1.3 million.
The American Farm Bureau Federation: $5.1 million.
Cargill: $1.7 million.
This is how much big agriculture spent lobbying Congress in 2009. Who's going to speak for you?
Sadly, the livelihood and viability of sustainable and organic family farmers—and the consumers who count on them—are constantly under threat from policies which tilt the playing field in favor of large-scale, corporate-controlled, industrial agriculture.
Will you help us continue to be an effective voice for organic, diversified, and sustainable farmers by making a donation of $30 to OEFFA's Food Policy Matters campaign today? To make a donation, click here. To find out more about OEFFA's farm policy work, click here.

Thanks to your generosity, we've already raised $2,491! But, because OEFFA's Board of Directors believes so strongly in this work, they're offering a 100% match for all donations up to a total of $3,500 through September 29. With just one day left, we're still $1,009 short of our goal. Donate today to double your impact and take advantage of this generous match!
Thanks for helping to build a sustainable agricultural future for Ohio,
