We are usually about 10 people of varied erudition and age. We like to talk politics, environmentalism, social issues, literature, the arts, and any blamed thing we want. Vote TODAY (before midnight tonight, thurs.) for Clark Montessori to win President's Race: click here: http://www.whitehouse.gov/commencement#vote-top
From: Joe Smitherman (Chris' brother):
A number of you know that I Coach at Clark Montessori High School I also have two nephews who attend Clark. Clark is currently one of six finalist in President Obama's Race To The Top High School Commencement Challenge where President Obama will speak at the winning schools commencement.
Clark is the ONLY school in the tri-state region in the competition.
Voting is open to everybody and Clark needs every vote! President Obama will select the winner from the top three vote getters.....
From: Claudia Bernard
I'm forwarding this to you so you can vote for Clark Montessori below! I would consider it a personal favor if you take time to do this.
I was one of the teachers who founded the first public Montessori school in the United States, here in Cincinnati. This one school (Children's House East) blossomed into 4 public elementary Montessori schools, which feed this high school. Clark is one of the top 6 finalists in the White House Race to the Top Commencement Challenge! This means, if Clark wins, President Obama speaks at their commencement!
Whether you are for or against Obama, please put politics aside, and take a minute and vote for this school, because I gave years of my time, energy and my soul to create it's beginning in the '80's.
And I'm proud of myself!
Remember, please vote on or before Thursday, April 29.
Please forward this request to others who care about Cincinnati, Montessori, education, me, or about anything!
May we all be happy and healthy! Claudia Bernard

(Though LWVO sees issue 2 (casino location) as neutral, I talked with people in Columbus recently to get their views. Moving the casino from downtown Columbus to the suburbs appears to be a good move. Columbus doesn't want it, as they are trying to keep the downtown area "family friendly," and the suburb does! Building the Citizen Budget
For the past several months, CCR (Citizens for Civic Renewal) has been convening the Citizen Budget Coalition to develop a way to work with the City of Cincinnati Mayor, Council and Administration to include citizen input in the policy budget for 2011-2012.
The Mayor, Council and Administration have agreed that hearing from citizens would be useful. The Coalition has designed a process where citizens will deliberate in small groups and suggest how the City of Cincinnati should balance a $50 million budget deficit. To have your voice heard, sign-up for one of the three neighborhood meetings and/or the all-city meeting. Space is limited, so please RSVP today. Please pass this invitation along to your fellow citizens to assure diverse views are included. If you have questions, contact Steve Johns, Executive Director, Citizens for Civic Renewal at 458-6736 or ccrcinn@juno.com.

Bentley Davis' POLITICAL NOTES, update of the week:
Political Notes:
I had to miss the salon yet again – all day meetings in Columbus meant I didn't make it back in time for the potluck.…
As you all know, the primaries are on Tuesday. I feel the need to call everyone's attention to events in the 2nd Congressional district Democratic primary (the east side of Cincinnati, eastern Hamilton County, and several other counties). There, former independent candidate, David Krikorian is facing young Surya Yalamanchili. In Thursday's paper, you will see that the party chairs from Hamilton and Clermont Counties have written a joint letter condemning racist comments made by Krikorian. Ohio Democratic Party Chair, Chris Redfern has also condemned these comments. Even Jean Schmidt said she was "shocked" at Krikorian's behavior. The story can be read here: http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20100428/NEWS0108/4290352/Top%20Dems%20say%20Krikorian%20crossed%20line
In addition to the primaries, I am sure you have all heard of the draconian immigration law recently passed by Arizona. This law makes it a state crime to not show proof of immigration status upon police demand. It also makes it illegal to shelter undocumented people. There are calls for boycotts of the state and businesses in Arizona. What you may not know is that Fairfield/ Hamilton representative, Courtney Combs, has called for a similar law in Ohio. It probably won't pass the house with its current make-up nor would the governor sign such a bill. Nevertheless, it is important to know that area representatives are working for such things.
Because of the Arizona law, it is very possible that Congress will move on immigration reform. I encourage people to express their opinions on this issue to Rep. Steve Driehaus as well as Senators Brown and Voinovich.
The US Senate is trying to debate financial reform as well. However, the Republicans are stopping debate on this important measure. Voinovich is among the Republicans refusing debate to go forward.
Finally, I would like to call your attention to the CARE Act in Ohio. This bill (Compassionate Assistance for Rape Emergencies, HB 333), would require hospitals to carry and offer emergency contraception to rape victims seen in their emergency departments. There is no reason to put rape victims at unnecessary risk of unwanted pregnancies because a hospital refuses to dispense this medication. If this issue moves you, please contact your state representative and let them know. An action form can be found here: https://secure.prochoiceamerica.org/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=3933
As always, please let me know if you have any questions.
P.S. This morning the Republicans decided to allow debate to go forward on the financial reform bill.

Ellen Goes to Texas for Healing Extravaganza
Why Extravaganza? Because I am shelling out more than 15 k for this. I hope I will see wonderful improvements in arthritis pain and weakness, as well as general overall health. I've been here since Sunday...returning tomorrow with an electrical stimulation machine of great sophistication.
I've been seeing Dan Lilley since early winter. He's the grandaddy physical therapist in town, much loved and respected by all and sundry. He has his son, Chris, on this electrical stimulation for Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy, a horrific disease. Over the past year of treatment Chris has been able to back way off on steroid medication, and is moving with more strength. You can see videos of Chris at the website for Dr. Rhodes, http://www.paindefeat.com
Donald Rhodes is a foot surgeon, about 63, a robust, energetic and enthusiastic man who stumbled on this through having a patient with RSDS, or reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome. He used electronic medicine gadgets. This was in 1992. TENS unit; also Galvanic something or other. She got better. RSD is a horrible disease, intractable pain.
As I understand it today, the machine that is the distant descendant of those units, patented by Dr. Donald Rhodes, causes the nerve endings to produce the neuropeptides (e.g. VIP, CGRF...) that combat the oxidative stress in the cells (rusting)(free radicals) due to insufficient capillary circulation. Certainly, my capillary circulation is improving, as measured by temperature elevations of up to 6 degrees over a 30 minute treatment! When the neuropeptides are circulating, the blood can move into the cells better, and then everything starts to hum along.
He has amazing stories of complete healing for RSDS, ... Wonderful improvement in M.S., Parkinson's, fibromyalgia, Crohn's disease, cancer. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
If half the effects enthusiastically promised by Dr. Rhodes materialize for me, I will be amazed and thrilled.
With my electrical stimulation machine I will administer low voltage to myself twice a day for 80 minutes while reading, sleeping, writing, etc. Special, fancy, stained-glass-window low voltage electricity. I'll use these 8 electrical leads (on sticky patches) attached to acupuncture points in my hands and in my feet. It feels like Reike or healing energy, except vastly more powerful and distinct.
Yep, it seems hugely too miraculous to be true. So was penicillin. Stay tuned.
Ellen
