Section One: Table Notes ............................................................................ (Note: these notes were taken at the table and have NOT been approved or corrected by the speakers.  Reader beware of inevitable misunderstandings and misrepresentations.  E.B.)
At the table Wednesday 10/16/08
Rob Nendewaab, Steve Sunderland, Charlotte Smith welcome Charlotte), Linda Grayman , Karen Wissel, Lind Gruber, Judy Cirillo, Walter Grayman, Duane Shaw, Ellen Bierhorst, Ginger Lee Frank, Mira Rodwan, Bill Limbacher, Fanchon Shur, Brooke Audreyal
Ellen, Karen, Linda Gruber, Walter, Duane (clockwise.)

Preamble read by Rob

Ellen: should we repent like Nineveh for our sins of greed and our paucity of fellow feeling, generosity, love.  Our wealth is the degree of mutual trust we share.  In Kenya they have riches of natural environment but are impoverished because they don’t trust each other.
Steve:  yes...
Rob: the Taoists believe in a balance of good and evil.
Bill: ... My students from Latin America marvel at how cooperative we are here.  “Why don’t you take all the newspapers at the self-serve kiosk.”

Judy It is much easier to be generous when you have enough..  Also want to know what each of us can do to help Obama win.  I have been canvasing, calling, distributing  literature.
Linda:  I just didn’t understand the financial situation.  Felt it was beyond me.  Maybe I could take responsibility for not demanding that people explain to us.  “Hedge fund”, “Derivative”.  Collective guilt, that we let these big operators ... No accountability.

Karen:  for the campaign I have just done phone banking.  Is it effective?  Maybe at least you are putting a little seed in their head.  Have sticker on my car.
If you know pregnant women, workshop Nov 1 at Gratitude in Motion, Fanchon Shur doing a class ...
I have a workshop Nov 1 also, “Body Alive” taught by me, $16, Northern Fellowship Townhall.

Ginger: What you described seems to me to be ultimately political.  If everyone chooses to behave more ethically towards their neighbor or spouse, that’s political, and very powerful.  But if you couch it in old testament terms, like that America allowed gays to marry and so the World Trade Centers went down... That’s bad.  Dangerous.
To help Obama help people register and vote...  Acorn...  I worked for them, Acorn, in ‘00 and ‘04... There could be abuses.

Bill:  have not done a darn thing for the Obama campaign.  I will vote for him.  My own economic situation is precarious; I can’t spare the time.
Mira Bill, do you discuss the campaign with people?  (yes)  Well  you get credit then.

Linda:  about the Obama campaign, at this point it is very hard to talk to McCain Palin supporters, so I find myself avoiding them.  It is not going to do any good...  One important thing is to help out on election day, take people to the polls.  ... I am kind of like Linda, I don’t understand the economic situation.  Ethically and morally we all owe it to ourselves to understand what they are proposing to help it, and will it be fair.  Ellen, I think  you are influenced by the Yom Kippur service, and feeling that we need to do that all  year long.

Charlotte:  I live by UC, so I knocked on doors of students.  And will do that on Nov. 4.  ... I would tend to agree, when opportunity presents, do the right thing.  I  disagree about Kenya; when people find themselves in poverty, people need to look out for their own families.
Steve:  I don’t think guilt helps anybody.  We are infused with guilt; craziness.  We don’t need to add any more guilt.
Obama: what would help is to bring a bag of food to the free store each week.  People do not  have warm coats.  I was at a meeting today, and people are cold.  I can remember stories about not having enough food, shelter during the Depression.  This weekend we had a program in high schools on homelessness.  The average age of the homeless is 9!
There is a rising deep sense of meanness in the US.  White racists are on the rise.  Homelessness is rising everywhere.  Though not in Cinti.  200 people at night; 80 under the bridges at the waterfront.  Shelters need warm clothing, food, ...  The Cincinnati Free Store.  Bring money, or canned goods.
The spirit of Obama, and now Colin Powell, is awakening our country.  These are things we can do.

Rob:  I thought of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.  Food, clothing, shelter first. Then to the next level, etc.  What you are able to do depends on how much you have.  Where you are on the hierarchy.  This crisis may be good for us in waking us up to doing needed tasks.

Mira: Holly near coming Monday with “sing out the vote” a suite for change at Mt Auburn Presby. 7:30.  Free.  Donation will be requested.  Wishing Chair, Tracy Walker, et al.    Also great issue of Natural Awakenings.
I have to admit that I saw Obama’s promise a long time ago....  I have an Obama sticker.  My friend argues that we have to vote with Obama in order to keep hope alive in America.  But I feel the other parties need to be heard... The Greens, socialists, libertarians...   I am taking a 16-part non violent communications course at St John’s UU church.
Last Fri. on NPR , Neil Conan was asking for callers to tell if they watched the debate.  One woman said a nice family invited them to watch together, and how special it was.  The host was for McCain.  The caller said she was able to discuss...  There were gay men parents there, who were seen as good.  And some  party attendees minds were changed by the presence of these gay parents, in a favorable.

Fanchon: I have been in fight and terror mode since 14 when my bro in law ran for council.  I rode in the sound car, and passed out posters.  ... Then I was pres. of the h.s. UNESCO support organization .  I addressed the city of L.A. Board of education about UNESCO.  Then the anti communist thing became stronger, a cancerous growth on our society.  My parents were active leftists.  Our friends were the black listed writers, the Hollywood Ten.  So I was afraid we’d get a knock on the door.  .... I promoted a debate about segregation when no one did.
Then later at L.A. Community College, had a Marx study group.
Fear.  I was thrown ito it too soon, I was too soon.  No support other than my immediate family.  So my heart goes to Obama beause he is getting the main stream, his good heart.  And the fact that I can go out and see intermarriage, gay people out, ... This is so incredible.  And it is amazing that Barack Obama is going to be our president!  Let us honor how much fear the older people have gone through to get to this place.
Ginger:  what about how fear is being used.?
Fanchon:  Powell should have gone farther in his statement... Shouldn’t the muslim american also be honored, shouldn’t their child be able to hope to be president?

Walter: After Nov 4 I will return to being open minded.  I am so focused on this election now.  I have been canvasing for Obama; unsure it was doing anything.  But this past Sunday was positive.  Many people I talked to had been on the fence and now were moving towards Obama.  It was after Powell made his brilliant speech.  Gave me a lot of hope.  Re. Powell, I thought “Where are the other old, good Republicans?”  ...  Palin is the one that really upsets me.  But Ithink if we awake on Nov 5 and McCain is president, I feel we can’t take it.  We’ve been through 8 years of Bush... If you held a six shooter with one bullet to your head, your probability of living through a shot would be the same as that of Sarah Palin being the President.

Brooke:  in the event that McCain is elected, Ellen will you be  holding these dinners in Costa Rica or in Canada.

Linda my one student ‘s mother works for Head Start.  She and her friends made 80 blankets for kids who had no blankey.  So beautiful!

Ginger:   Let’s discuss the issues on the local ballot.
ISSUES
  1. earlier deadlines for submitting the petitions for citizen’s initiatives to get stuff on to the ballot.  Ohio constitution.  The League of Women Voters says vote YES.  Brooke: it give the citizens LESS time to collect the petitions signatures.  I am in process... But I think I will vote NO.
  2. Environmental issue.  Vote YES.
  3. Groundwater rights... A Ohio constitutional amendment.  Private property rights to be upheld.  Those opposed argue that these rights are already protected by the legislation passed already, and the vehicle of Constitutional Amendment is not the right way to address this.  So Ellen votes NO.
  4. issue withdrawn
  5. Payday Loan issue.  YES.  Caps the interest rate at 28% APR.  Walter: this might drive payday loans out of business.  That’s only 12 $ on $500.  For one months.  I am not sure that this remedy is the right thing.
  6. A casino near Wilmington, OH.  Ellen: I vote NO... The governor says NO...  Poorly drawn legislation, no oversight, no guarantee that money would go to Ohio coffers at all.

(the phone bank materials have now arrived... Note taking stoped.  See Lloyd House election picks below. )

~ End of Table Notes~

    Hugs to everyone,
    Ellen

Hey everyone,

My name is Dan Kagan-Kans, and I'm a deputy Field Organizer for the Obama campaign in Cincinnati (I work for Jackie Lewis in the Northside office). I'm writing to ask for your help. We're about to kick off the greatest Get Out The Vote (GOTV) operation in American history and we need your help to make it happen.

Please sign yourself up here for as many shifts as you can, then forward this email to your friends, family and colleagues:

http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=pPHMu2uu62suw_16Ua2OeIQ&hl=en

GOTV has three phases:
Phase 1 (Oct. 29 - Nov. 2): We will make final contact with and persuade the remaining undecided voters.

Phase 2 (Nov. 3): To inform and fire up our strong supporters we'll be dropping door hangers with polling locations and hours on their doors.

Phase 3 (Nov. 4, ELECTION DAY!): We'll make sure that those who support Barack, but are reluctant to vote, vote!

Even if you can't help, please forward this email.

We have identified thousands of "sporadic Dems" -- people in Cincinnati who support Barack but who have not voted in the past, and aren't particularly likely to vote this year.

If we get these people out to vote, we win. It's that simple. But we need to make contact with them-- we need to remind them to vote on Election Day.

This is the biggest campaign ever assembled, for the most important election in decades, and I sure don't want to wake up Nov. 5 and think that I could have done more. Sign yourself up here:

Developmental Movement Core of Prenatal Workshop

Innovative Movement Therapist Fanchon Shur will be conducting a Prenatal Workshop at Gratitude in Motion (www.gratitudeinmotion.com
<http://www.gratitudeinmotion.com/> ), 268 Ludlow Avenue, Cincinnati on Saturday, November 1 from 2-4 pm. The cost is $35 if paid before October 27 and $40 after.
Wherever you are on your path; a newly expectant mother, half-way through your pregnancy, at the doorway to delivery, or already a parent, Fanchon Shur’s workshop will bring peace and confidence to you on your journey through motherhood and help you recognize the subtle evolution of movement in the womb and during the first months of your child’s life. Working from her new CD, “Meditations for Expectant Mothers and the Life Within,” this workshop will help you discover how, as a caregiver, you can encourage and stimulate these earliest movement processes that are the scaffolding, the blueprint of all of our choices.  You can be instrumental in laying the foundation in the crucial first year for the lifelong intelligence, emotional health and physical confidence of your child.  This workshop is not just for expectant mothers - all are welcome.  To hear an excerpt, visit www.birthmeditation.com
<http://www.growthinmotion.org/meditationscd>
Fanchon Shur is the creator and director of Growth in Motion, Inc. and has made an exhaustive study tracing the maturation of reflex and movement patterns from the fetus to the adult.  Fanchon's Movement Therapy begins where mind/body disciplines like yoga, pilates, and the Alexander Technique, as well as forms of psychotherapy and counseling leave off.  This powerful form of therapy allows us to tap into our truest, deepest, and most authentic self to break down the walls and barriers that took us years to erect. A path to personal growth, healing, and self-empowerment, Movement Therapy is a holistic approach - uniting the body, mind, emotions and spirit into a meaning-filled vessel of belonging and purpose in the world.
Visit www.growthinmotion.org

Articles

    So I
got my ballot in the mail.  Here’s what is on it and what I am picking.
    For President:
    Barack Obama + joe Biden
Then there are a lot of other people I never heard of, Chuck Baldwin of the Constitution Party; Bob Barr of the Libertarian Party, Richard Duncan, John McCain of course, Cynthia McKinney of the Green Party, Brian Moore of the Socialist Party, and Ralph Nader.

    Att
    orney General of Ohio:
Rob’t Owens, Richard Cordray (Democrat), Mike Crites (Republican).  Anybody got info on this?

First Congressional District for the US House: Steve Driehaus, Democrat.  (not Steve Chabot, incumbent Republican).

Representative to Ohio House:  Dale Mallory, Democrat; Theo Barnes, Republican.  Now here’s a riddle.  Mallory ran for something about two years ago and a lot of bad stuff came out about him.  Looks like a black sheep Mallory.  Made me not want to vote for him then, and the aftertaste is still lingering.  Who has infor on this?

    County Commissioner:
Tod Portune, incumbent democrat (not Ed Rothenberg)
    Also for
    County Commissioner:
Chris Dole, independent (actually is a Democrat), vs. Greg Hartmann, Republican (I do like Chris Dole who came to the salon.  Sincere, experienced in government, has been attending County Commission meetings faithfully for a while... Couple years maybe...  I do not like what I hear about Greg Hartman: that he just came to Ohio from Texas a few years ago, knows nothing about the Co. Commission, his father has ties to Bush.  A carpetbagger.  Has been serving as clerk of courts.  Not job training for the Co. Commission.  )

    Prose
    cutor:  Deters running unopposed.  (arrgh!)

Clerk of Cour of Common Pleas:  Martha Good, Democrat, vs. Patricia Clancy, Republican.
    Sheriff:
Simon Leis, running unopposed (double Arrgh!)

County Recorder: Wayne Coates Democrat, Rebecca Groppe Republican.

    County Treasurer
Incumbent Robt. Goering, Republican;  Steve Brinker, Democrat.  I have the impression that Goering has done a good job.  Anyone?

County Engineer:  Wm. Brayshaw, republican, unopposed incumbent.

Coroner:  O’dell Owens, Democrat, incumbent, has done great job.

    Ohio Supreme Court:
    Russo (Democrat) vs. O’Connor
    Stratton, vs. Sikora (Democrat)

    Three judges running  unopposed

    Judge common pleas
Pat DeWine vs. democrat Norma Davis
Fred Nelson vs. Jerry Metz, Democrat

    More unopposed judges.  ...

    Judge of Common Pleas
Russel Mock vs. Democrat Jody Luebbers

    ISSUES
    1. const. Amendment re. deadlines for statewide ballot issues.  I read about this on the League of Women Voters Cincinnati site.  It would appear to me that folks wanting to get an issue on the ballot (as for instance the Health Care Reform group SPAN-Ohio) would be hurt by having an earlier amendment, so I am guessing that NO is the better vote here.
    2.
Continuation of “Clean Ohio” program for Environmental Revitalization and Conservation.
    Yes.  Environment Ohio says:
YES on Issue 2 to reinstate the Clean Ohio Fund. Without your help, the Clean Ohio Fund, our state's most important water and land preservation program will expire.

Since Ohioans voted to create the program in 2000, waterways from Lake Erie to the Big Darby are cleaner, more than 26,000 acres of wildlife habitat have been preserved, and over 170 abandoned industrial sites have been cleaned up. So far, the Clean Ohio Fund made more than 700 clean water, urban revitalization and land preservation projects possible.
    3.
Constitutional Amendment to protect private property rights in groundwater, lakes and other watercourses.
On the League of Women Voters site it said that the rights indicated are already protected under the legislation that has passed, and that it is inappropriate to use the Constitutional Amendment route to address such issues in any case.  So I am voting NO.

    4. Withdrawn.

    5.
    Referendum re. Payday Lending PRACTICES
    .
I am voting YES.  This is to reaffirm legislation already passed in the House pertaining to high interest loan sharks.  Opponents have sent around high gloss publicity saying a Yes vote would compromise your privacy and give the government access to your information...  That publicity is paid for by the loan shark people.
    6.
    Casino issue:
I am voting NO.  Strickland is against it.  I hear that it is not well crafted law, that is could amount to out of state operators making money and Ohio getting zip; there are no guarantees or oversight; there is no local control.
On this basis I am against it.  I am also against legal gambling.  Have you been to the boats?  I have been to casinos in New Mexico and they are depressing and ugly.  Would we want to have a brothel to fund the state of Ohio?  We could make even more money that way.

    8. Charter Amendment, City of Cincinnati:
    YES FOR PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION.
You have to be a rocket scientist or have a PhD in statistics to understand the math of this voting system.  I don’t.  You put your votes in order of preference, 1 for your first choice, 2 for your second favorite, etc.  Rather than just making 9 equal votes for your candidates of choice.  All the first choice ballots are counted, and candidates who don’t still make enough to be on council have those first choice votes discarded and those ballots are counted on their second choice votes.  Etc.  What I do know is that when Cincinnati had PR (from something like 1930 until 1955) it was one of the top best-governed cities in America.  I know that it was defeated by racist propaganda when it looked like Ted Berry, an African American council member, would be elected as mayor.  Oh NO!  What I do know is that it empowers minorities and is a much fairer way to have representation of all the points of view, rather than letting corporate campaign contributions sway the electorate who do not know well any of the candidates.  This is like having precinct representation, only your “precinct” isn’t geographical, but is your community of values.  Like “Environmentalists”.  Just think, we could have a council member who is there representing us!  What I do also know is that very smart, right thinking leaders favor this PR system.  Bobbie Stern favors it.  The Weekly has printed a number of papers in favor of it and explaining it.  See previous Weekly editions at
    http://lloydhouse.blogspot.com

For a business owner to have to pay income tax on $250,000:  1. He must have $250,000 profit left over after paying ALL THE EXPENSES of running the business. 2. Under Obama, he would pay the exact same tax he is paying right now.  3. If he makes $10,000 more and now has 260,000, then he will pay a bit more taxes on that extra $10.000 only.
McCain is banking on your not knowing that. Now you do.  If you think this letter is a trick, just show it to anybody you know who has any kind of business.  The truth is, you can start a business and do really well in it and make a lot of money before you would have to pay a penny more tax under Obama than the way it is now.
By the way, does any plumber get $1,000 a day, five days a week, for 50 weeks a year?  Of course not.  Well, that’s $250,000.  And he would have to charge a lot more than that to end up with that much left over after paying all his expenses.
Does McCain think we are stupid?
We can and will vote smart.
We have had 8 years of stupid.  And McCain would give us more.  Do you  remember Bush’s repeatedly pushing for privatizing our social security money? And McCain’s constantly supporting him on that?  How would we feel right now if everybody--even, yes, the elderly included, had been managing their own social security accounts as “private investments in the stock market” these last few months?
This election is kind of scary.  But, we can simply vote smart.  We must.

.................................................

These three are short enough to have a shot at the bigger papers--then
again, those papers are not as hungry for them.
A really short one: this one is in a voice that maybe works best for
small regional papers.  Gene

No! North Carolina Won’t Go Down.
McCain has just abandoned the whole state of Michigan. He knows he
cannot convince Michigan to believe him about jobs. Are we here in North
Carolina any different? The whole country needs jobs. We have to do this
together.
After 8 years of a mess, now it is time when maybe we have to rethink
things a bit and switch to put the Democrats back in to get this taken
care of: job creation. Like we did in the Great Depression during the
nineteen thirties—we put in the Democrats then. They fixed it and must
fix it again now.
North Carolina is not going down. Neither is Michigan. Neither is America.

THIS NEXT ONE IS ONLY 165 WORDS:

None of My Best Friends Are Black...or...This Race Business...or...The
Race Thing...
Just say it. Most white people have never had a really close friendship
with an African-American. There lurks the fear of the unknown, of the
“other.” It is absurd. But it is there.
We can deal with it. Think Colin Powell. As we watched him squirm with
Bush and become disgusted, we grew to like him if for no other reason
than his race melted away and his personhood stood revealed. He was like
us. He is exactly like “us.”
A famous newscaster from “60-Minutes” died recently and was eulogized.
The voice on the TV said “…and he broke the barriers!”
What barriers? Then, stopping and looking closely at the TV portrait of
the man: “Gosh. I guess he was a black guy. Hmmm. Ed Bradley!”
Just like that, race will dissolve. It will be fine. In this case,
better than fine. Obama and Biden are intelligent and they listen to
people. And they are just people. It is being revealed every day.

AND THIS ONE IS 200 WORDS WITHOUT THE TITLE--query them re their limits.

Are 45 Countries Better than Us?
McCain recently said we have the best healthcare system in the world. If
that is true, we should not tinker with it. But it is not true. Measured
by the life expectancy of the people in the various countries, we are
not number one. We are not even in the top ten.
Can you believe we are 46th? Yes. There are 45 countries on earth where
you are likely to live longer than here. In 45 countries they are doing
healthcare better than we are. And none of them spends nearly as much
money on it as we do.
It is well known that the Democrats have been fighting to fix our
healthcare system for fifteen years straight. They have not had enough
power to do it. McCain voted twice recently against healthcare for the
children of the poor, the senate and house passed it both times anyway,
and Bush killed it both times with his veto. The house and senate did
not have enough votes to override Bush and McCain.
Children, like all other humans, tend to die much sooner without
healthcare. We really do need a change. This is a ridiculous disgrace.
I don’t know that I could even name 45 countries.

Steve Sunderland on Colin Powell’s Endorsement of Obama
On Meet the Press

Dear Friends:

Colin Powell's endorsement of Obama will go down as one of the great
statements by any American politician. I am not a fan of Powell. Yet,
this statement by him at this time forces me to rethink my position.
More importantly, Powell uses words like "inclusion" to suggest that
we can be a better nation because we do reach out to everyone. He is
the first person of his stature to place the context of being an
American and a Muslim in a favorable light. He connects the word
"American"  to what many of had hoped for in the peace movement. We
are a country of law, of equality, and of justice. He connects Obama
to this old but buried theme. I urge you to read or see his entire
statement. It is unforgettable.

In peace,

Steve

"MR. OBAMA IS AN AMERICAN:" THE NEW POWELL DOCTRINE

BY STEVE SUNDERLAND

I was so positively stunned by Colin Powell's recent statements about supporting Obama that I immediately sent it to my peace network. Here's the part of his comment that grabbed me:

"I'm also troubled by, not what Senator McCain says, but what members of the party say. And it is permitted to be said such things as, "Well, you know that Mr. Obama is a Muslim."

Well, the correct answer is, he is not a Muslim, he's a Christian. He's always been a Christian.

But the really right answer is, what if he is? Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer's no, that not America.

Is there something wrong with some seven year old Muslim American kid believing he or she could be president?

Yet I have heard senior member of my own party drop the suggestion, "He's a Muslim and he might be associated with terrorists." This is not the way we should be doing it in America.

I feel strongly about this particular point because of a picture I saw in a magazine. It was a photo essay about troops who are serving in Iraq and AfghanIstan.

And one picture at the tail end of this photo essay was of a mother in Arlington Cemetery, and she had her head on the headstone of her son's grave. And as the picture focused in, you could see the writing on the headstone. And it gave his awards--Purple Heart, Bronze Star-- showed that he died in Iraq, gave his date of birth, date of death. he was 20 years old.

And then, at the top of the headstone, it didn't have a Christian cross; it didn't have a Star of David; it had a crescent and a star of the Islamic faith. And his name was Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan, and he was an American. He was born in New Jersey. He was 14 years old at the time if 9/11, and he waited until he can go serve his country, and he gave his life."

Powell is the first national leader of either party to take on the ugly aspects of American society since 9/11. He signals to   the country that we can no longer consider ourselves good Americans if we lump all Muslims, or, all Christians and Jews, into the same negative frames of reference. The open acknowledgement that an American Muslim can be president strengthens efforts to make our country an inclusive one. By emphasizing the most unfairly demonized group, Powell asks us to wake up to the ways that national opinion can manipulate the hearts of Americans.

"Inclusion" has been a dirty word for too long in the American vocabulary. As we have increased our separation from each other based on race, gender, sexual orientation, and ability, we have created a foundation for widespread hatred, ignorance and fear. Who knows a Muslim? I was struck by a rabbi writing about interfaith work noting that he has more books about Islam than friends who are Muslim. I was saddened to hear of the lack of attendance at a mosque of one of our leading educators because he "...just never thought of going." And, I was continually amazed at the reluctance to engage in religious discussions with Muslims in synagogues, churches and educational institutions.

The fear of the "Muslim" is but a temporary replacement for the fear of the Hispanic, or the poor, or the Black  family, or the disabled, or the person with a different sexual orientation. Now, with widespread and growing economic crisis, the chances of people creating relationships that are based on common pain is lessoned. Instead, we read of the rise of "white racist groups" to spread the hatred of immigrants and Obama. Are we surprised by this turn of events?

Powell's sentiments  of compassion struck a deep chord with hundreds of Cincinnati public, private and parochial high school students and teachers as they lived in "Shanty Towns" at their high schools throughout the city. On some of the coldest nights, students gathered around fires to listen to former homeless people, now advocates to abolish homelessness, share the "rules of survival" for the homeless. "Guard your valuables and your friend's bag as well," one speaker told a freezing group. "Everything in your world is in this bag and if it is lost, you have to start over at the very beginning," he said with the authority of someone who had too many bags stolen. The students listened deeply to the stories and heard that most homeless do not spend their nights in cardboard boxes. Instead, they live in abandoned cars, empty and destroyed buildings, or, "...just on the street: I just put my head down and go to sleep."

But the cardboard box, plus the cold, plus the long night of trying to keep warm, all added up to a powerful and, for some, unforgettable experience of participating and reflecting on homelessness. No book could match this experience. No film could convey the biting cold. The lessons were that Americans, yes, Americans were having to live this way day in and day out and, from recent news reports, the numbers of people on the streets is doubling in major American urban centers. It shocked many students to learn that the average age of these homeless was 9 years old.

The homeless education events were part of the first city-wide Shanty Town experience for Cincinnati and for any city. Student leaders from the different schools had come together in late spring to select a common date for all schools to participate. Being involved meant to think of many different ways to become educated including coming to a common "teach in" to hear from some of the local "experts" on homelessness; to partner with local agencies directly working with the homeless and work out short and long range plans for involvement, and, to create a Shanty Town at their own high school. The planning meeting was an exciting time as different high school teams, some more experienced than others, offered suggestions on what should happen, how to get cardboards, what kinds of food to be served, and how safety issues could be managed. The Mayerson Foundation, the Greater Cincinnati Homeless Coalition and the Peace Village all played a part. The students, with the support of their school faculty, took the lead in clarifying, suggesting, and offering consultation. And,it worked!

The new "Powell Doctrine," as I suspect it will be known, opens a long closed door for discussion and action about  the importance of inclusion as a indispensable aspect of peace. The agenda of justice that has been put on hold, may now come forward and be taken up as a part of executive leadership at all levels. Surely, the war will be brought to a close and reconstruction begun. Equally certain, there will be a return to civil rights law, both at local, state and federal levels and with new appointments to the Supreme Court. The discussion of justice will take a position at the center of reviews of policies about ending hunger and homelessness, enforcing new and old laws that affirm the involvement of  people with disabilities in all aspects of life, and, finally, with the end of racism toward people who are American blacks, American Muslims, American with intellectual and physical gifts and challenges, American children who need schools that honor their uniqueness, and the list goes on. Powell signals that there are many people, including Republicans, that want to return to the values that make America both free and just. As America awakens, so the definition of
"being an American" can be refreshed so that any American, even 8 year old Muslims, can be proud of our country. Thank you, General Powell.

Howard Konicov: Councilmembers Berding and Ghiz are enemies of Environmental Justice Ordinance.  Call Mayor now!

Dear all
,

This week we witnessed a "full court press" by the Chamber of Commerce, led by Jeff Berding, to end the Environmental Justice Ordinance in committee.  Berding attempted to do this by misusing his public powers on the Rules Committee of City Council to add Leslie Ghiz to the Environment, Health & Safety Committee to vote against the measure.

Leslie Ghiz is about as committed to the Environment, Health & Safety as she and her party were in her former home of West Virginia, a state that is being destroyed by the coal industry from top to bottom.  Robert Kennedy, Jr. had some telling comments about these practices at XU last week.

Of course this misguided effort is unfortunate because EJ will be a vehicle for growth for the local Economy as it will drive more value added use of our limited land in this City.  In Market Capitalism polluting is economically inefficient and arguments to the contrary are widely, widely discredited.

It is a sad statement on the quality of our local leadership that we even continue to have these debates.

Please:
  1. Call Mayor Mallory [352-3250] and ask him to bring this  to a vote,
  2. Call Chris Bortz [352-3255] and ask him to support it,
  3. Vote to remove Jeff Berding from office when he comes up for re-election in a year, he is operating at the nexus of corruption and incompetence, and finally
  4. Ask your Council representatives to stop sending your tax dollars [$100,000's] to the Chamber where they are used to lobby against the Environment and to work to end the self indulgence of their brand of Crony Capitalism in our region.
Thank you for your continued quality of life efforts.  It is genuinely appreciated!!

Sincerely,

Howard M. Konicov

THE DECLINE OF THE  UNITED STATES ?

By Daniel Hershey, Ph.D., Emeritus Professor, University of Cincinnati, and... Salonista!

Author of fourteen books, including "Must We Grow Old (From Pauling to Prigogine to Toynbee)" and "Entropy Theory of Aging Systems : Humans, Corporations, and the Universe"

Arnold Toynbee, the famous historian of the early 20th century, in his book, "A Study of History", described the "universalist state", referring to a nation that had been at the height of its political and military powers but had lost its powers. The universalist state forgets or is unable or unwilling to satisy the needs of its internal citizens and in compensation, engages in military excursions beyond its borders. The second law of thermodynamics, expressed by Ilya Prigogine, (Nobel Prize winner, chemistry, 1977), says that we fall apart from within, with increasing disorder, if we neglect the internal pressures and make little effort to renew ourselves by the flow of information, energy, and material through our boundaries. The barbarians, always lurking beyong our borders, but unable to penetrate when the nation state is strong, now are finally able to infiltrate through the weakened membrane of our boundaries, and diminish the history of the universalist state.

The question we must ask now is, Has the United States become such a universalist state, as we watch its infrastructure deteriorate and we see the widening gulf between the upper echelon of the privileged class and the increasingly stressed middle class and the poor. Are we now unable or unwilling to repair this damaged  infrastructure as the United States engages in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan?

        Dear Fellow Movie/Food Lover:

I am, for personal purposes, currently compiling a list of films that deal with food, cooking, restaurants, menus, recipes and/or the getting of food & its preparation/consumption as an
artistic/creative/therapeutic/growth/survival/political/existential/whatever act. Keeping in mind this is a broad spectrum I have so far thought of:

Babette's Feast
Big Night
Ratatouille
Like Water for Chocolate
Chocolat
A Sunday in the Country
Waitress
Fried Green Tomatoes
The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover
Delicatessen
Who's Killing the Great Chefs of Europe
Experience Preferred...but Not Essential
the Willy Wonka flicks
Godfather, GoodFellas, etc. (please offer your titles here)
No Reservations
The Hours
and even
Monty Python's Meaning of Life, Le Grande Bouffe, Titus, 2001 & the three Anthony Hopkins/Hannibal Lecter flicks (I said this was a broad spectrum...)

If and when you have time would you please give this some thought and send me any titles you would add to this list? I am especially interested in films that see food preparation as an artistic act, i.e.: that cooking is an art; but, not just that.

Thanks,
Film Afficianado & (Would-be) Chef
