Preamble read by Ellen
ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE ... Claire:

Very hard to describe what it is.  ... A method anybody can learn to take control of physical and mental wellbeing.
To take conscious control of their wellbeing in a constructive manner.
The founder: F.M. Alexander, an Australian actor with problems losing his voice.  Doctors failed...  1890.  He worked on the problem himself.  Analysis suggested there was something he was doing that was making him be hoarse.  Studied himself in the mirror.  Discovered habits of tension every time he would start to speak... Pulling head back, gasping for air, depressing his larnyx.  Unconscious habits.  Intended then to stop those habits, but discovered how difficult that actually is.  Discovered a dynamic relationship between the head-neck posture that effects every part of the body, “primary control”.  ... Learning the A.T. Is a little like learning to ride a bike.  The teacher guides you, holding up the “bike” while you are ... Getting the hang of it.
... His voice came back, and his health overall improved.  Breathing was much better.  People flocked to him to get help.  Eventually he abandoned acting in favor of being a full time teacher.  In the 1930’s he began training new teachers.  Had moved to England in the teens.  London.
Best to experience a lesson to yourself.
Very useful for people who suffer pain, e.g. Back pain.  You learn to do for yourself to help with pain or stress patterns.  Also good for actors, musicians, athletes, people seeking personal development generally.

Jennifer:
Is not a therapy.  We do not diagnoses or treat.  It is an educational system, uncovering your habitual lpatterns.
The primary Control is what we all have.  It describes what organizes you in doing any behavior at all.
Claire:  IN absence of injury of injury or disease it just “works”,,, as in babies and toddlers.  They go about their day with less effort, less fatigue than we do.  The reason is  their movement is governed by the Primary Control.  Then
At age 4 or so it starts falling apart as they immitate bad habits...
Jennifer:  and school...  By adulthood, lots of tension patterns.
3 year program, 1600 hours

~ End of Table Notes~

    Hugs to everyone,
    Ellen

    Section Two: Events & Opportunities

Hey Obama supporters!  We are having phone banking right here at the house every Wednesday 7 – 8 pm.  The campaign provides the cell phones, call lists, instructions.  It’s fun.  This is significant, important work and we need your help.  Surrounded by friends it’s painless.  Come for pot luck at 5:45, participate in the salon conversation, and then peel off with me for phone banking... So last night we had three stalwart phone bankers... Kate Lester, Mark Rasmussen, and myself.  We worked for an hour, made many calls.  No cranks that gave us a hard time.  Some pleasant conversations.  Come join us.

International Alexander Technique Awareness Week
The Who Technique? The Alexander Technique is a method by which a person learns to apply the basic principles of the body's natural coordination to improve the quality of his or her own movement. These principles which function unconsciously in infants and animals can be learned and applied consciously to improve the functioning and integration of the whole individual. The new coordination may provide relief of stress and pain, make repetitious or boring tasks easy, and provide a new opening for excellence in performers and others who need to use their bodies for maximum efficiency and endurance. Those who study the technique often experience a sense of lightness, ease and empowerment to handle day-to-day circumstances. People take lessons for a variety of reasons (Pain Relief e.g. back pain, Performance Enhancement~athletes, musicians, actors, & Personal Growth) and everyone finds them to be an enjoyable and calming experience.
The American Society for the Alexander Technique (www.alexandertech.com
<http://www.alexandertech.com/> )  is pleased to announce that in 2008, Alexander Societies in 14 countries are participating and gearing up for the fifth annual
International Alexander Awareness Week, October 4th- 12th, 2008.

The Lloyd House Salon will participate with its own Alexander Technique event on October 15th with an introductory talk, Q and A, and free demo lessons with qualified teachers. Wear non-constricting clothing and clean socks if you'd like a turn!
You can read additional information about the technique at www.greatalexander.net
<
http://www.greatalexander.net/>
We think you will love this Technique as much as we do!
Recently, Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield recommended the Alexander Technique in  its newsletter, citing a major British Study.  Alexander Technique is best for back pain!

Meditation in Art:: An art exhibit by Nikki Orlemann and Nina Tolley. Nina who facilitates Hatha Yoga at Lloyd House, weekly, will show her landscapes and still life in pastels. She took up art after retirement as a clinical social worker in oncology social work and has had several shows in the Cincinnati area. The art exhibit will be at the Woman's Art Club Cultural Center, 6980 Cambridge, in Mariemont. Opening reception is November 2nd from 3-6pm. The public is invited. Nina describes her work as meditation-- she likes to work in silence and mindfully puts each stroke on paper. For other hours or more info please write Nina at ninatolley@yahoo.com

Think about it:  “President Obama gives inaugural address”; “President Obama gives State of the Nation”; “President Obama meets with world leaders”.  President Obama giving Kennedy style press conferences.  This is going to be so cool.  Picture it.  Imagine it.  Enjoy imagining it.  Manifest it!
Thanks to Julie Murray and Erik Bendix/Meredith Balgley for forwarding this idea.  Our thoughts are powerful.

What is Issue 5, and what does it have to do with economic justice?

- Every year over 300,000 Ohioans are trapped in a debt cycle with Payday lenders, opening new loans to repay the last loan due to the high interest rates and fees.

- Payday Lenders currently charge up to 391% annual interest on hardworking Ohioans

- The State Legislature passed a law to cap that interest rate at 28%, but Payday Lenders are working to put Issue 5 on the ballot to repeal this.

- A YES
vote on Issue 5 in November will protect the 28% interest rate cap on Payday Loans.

Articles

    • Lloyd House election picks
    • Paul Davis: use no racism in presidential race decision making!

    So I
got my ballot in the mail.  Here’s what is on it and what I am picking.
    For President:
    Barack Obama + joe Biden
Then there are a lot of other people I never heard of, Chuck Baldwin of the Constitution Party; Bob Barr of the Libertarian Party, Richard Duncan, John McCain of course, Cynthia McKinney of the Green Party, Brian Moore of the Socialist Party, and Ralph Nader.

    Att
    orney General of Ohio:
Rob’t Owens, Richard Cordray (Democrat), Mike Crites (Republican).  Anybody got info on this?

First Congressional District for the US House: Steve Driehaus, Democrat.  (not Steve Chabot, incumbent Republican).

Representative to Ohio House:  Dale Mallory, Democrat; Theo Barnes, Republican.  Now here’s a riddle.  Mallory ran for something about two years ago and a lot of bad stuff came out about him.  Looks like a black sheep Mallory.  Made me not want to vote for him then, and the aftertaste is still lingering.  Who has infor on this?

    County Commissioner:
Tod Portune, incumbent democrat (not Ed Rothenberg)
    Also for
    County Commissioner:
Chris Dole, independent (actually is a Democrat), vs. Greg Hartmann, Republican (I do like Chris Dole who came to the salon.  Sincere, experienced in government, has been attending County Commission meetings faithfully for a while... Couple years maybe...  I do not like what I hear about Greg Hartman: that he just came to Ohio from Texas a few years ago, knows nothing about the Co. Commission, his father has ties to Bush.  A carpetbagger.  Has been serving as clerk of courts.  Not job training for the Co. Commission.  )

    Prose
    cutor:  Deters running unopposed.  (arrgh!)

Clerk of Cour of Common Pleas:  Martha Good, Democrat, vs. Patricia Clancy, Republican.
    Sheriff:
Simon Leis, running unopposed (double Arrgh!)

County Recorder: Wayne Coates Democrat, Rebecca Groppe Republican.

    County Treasurer
Incumbent Robt. Goering, Republican;  Steve Brinker, Democrat.  I have the impression that Goering has done a good job.  Anyone?

County Engineer:  Wm. Brayshaw, republican, unopposed incumbent.

Coroner:  O’dell Owens, Democrat, incumbent, has done great job.

    Ohio Supreme Court:
    Russo (Democrat) vs. O’Connor
    Stratton, vs. Sikora (Democrat)

    Three judges running  unopposed

    Judge common pleas
Pat DeWine vs. democrat Norma Davis
Fred Nelson vs. Jerry Metz, Democrat

    More unopposed judges.  ...

    Judge of Common Pleas
Russel Mock vs. Democrat Jody Luebbers

    ISSUES
    1. const. Amendment re. deadlines for statewide ballot issues.  I read about this on the League of Women Voters Cincinnati site.  It would appear to me that folks wanting to get an issue on the ballot (as for instance the Health Care Reform group SPAN-Ohio) would be hurt by having an earlier amendment, so I am guessing that NO is the better vote here.
    2.
Continuation of “Clean Ohio” program for Environmental Revitalization and Conservation.
    Yes.  Environment Ohio says:
YES on Issue 2 to reinstate the Clean Ohio Fund. Without your help, the Clean Ohio Fund, our state's most important water and land preservation program will expire.

Since Ohioans voted to create the program in 2000, waterways from Lake Erie to the Big Darby are cleaner, more than 26,000 acres of wildlife habitat have been preserved, and over 170 abandoned industrial sites have been cleaned up. So far, the Clean Ohio Fund made more than 700 clean water, urban revitalization and land preservation projects possible.
    3.
Constitutional Amendment to protect private property rights in groundwater, lakes and other watercourses.
On the League of Women Voters site it said that the rights indicated are already protected under the legislation that has passed, and that it is inappropriate to use the Constitutional Amendment route to address such issues in any case.  So I am voting NO.

    4. Withdrawn.

    5.
    Referendum re. Payday Lending PRACTICES
    .
I am voting YES.  This is to reaffirm legislation already passed in the House pertaining to high interest loan sharks.  Opponents have sent around high gloss publicity saying a Yes vote would compromise your privacy and give the government access to your information...  That publicity is paid for by the loan shark people.
    6.
    Casino issue:
I am voting NO.  Strickland is against it.  I hear that it is not well crafted law, that is could amount to out of state operators making money and Ohio getting zip; there are no guarantees or oversight; there is no local control.
On this basis I am against it.  I am also against legal gambling.  Have you been to the boats?  I have been to casinos in New Mexico and they are depressing and ugly.  Would we want to have a brothel to fund the state of Ohio?  We could make even more money that way.

    7. Charter Amendment, City of Cincinnati:
    YES FOR PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION.
You have to be a rocket scientist or have a PhD in statistics to understand the math of this voting system.  I don’t.  You put your votes in order of preference, 1 for your first choice, 2 for your second favorite, etc.  Rather than just making 9 equal votes for your candidates of choice.  All the first choice ballots are counted, and candidates who don’t still make enough to be on council have those first choice votes discarded and those ballots are counted on their second choice votes.  Etc.  What I do know is that when Cincinnati had PR (from something like 1930 until 1955) it was one of the top best-governed cities in America.  I know that it was defeated by racist propaganda when it looked like Ted Berry, an African American council member, would be elected as mayor.  Oh NO!  What I do know is that it empowers minorities and is a much fairer way to have representation of all the points of view, rather than letting corporate campaign contributions sway the electorate who do not know well any of the candidates.  This is like having precinct representation, only your “precinct” isn’t geographical, but is your community of values.  Like “Environmentalists”.  Just think, we could have a council member who is there representing us!  What I do also know is that very smart, right thinking leaders favor this PR system.  Bobbie Stern favors it.  The Weekly has printed a number of papers in favor of it and explaining it.  See previous Weekly editions at
    http://lloydhouse.blogspot.com
    .

Paul Davis (convener of East Side Sanga Buddhist group, a marvelous guy) urges No Racism in this presidential race:

In my life I’ve only seen one man killed, Fred Otis Baugh Jr. He was 19, a Marine infantryman, and African American. Fred was killed on July 23, 1966near DaNang, Vietnam. I was also 19 and a Marine, but I’m white and I made it back home. I grew up in a small, conservative, and almost all white town in rural northeast Ohio. The racism I learned was subtle and fed more by ignorance than fear or hate. Fred’s death opened my eyes to a much different reality. At the moment of his death the fog of ignorance lifted and all I felt was compassion and sorrow. I’m writing this to those Americans who like me grew up with racism. As we consider who we will vote for in the presidential election I recognize and accept many will not vote for Senator Obama because of policy differences. What I cannot accept is holding to a belief that keeps a person from voting for him because his father was black. Fred and thousands of African Americans have died defending the
constitution and the best of our American values. How can we honor these sacrifices while holding to a belief that excludes the possibility of voting for an African American? Confronting contradictions in our thinking often creates anxiety.  Not facing the contradiction leads to a moral ambivalence that wounds the soul.

T-shirts, Pins Etc. When Voting: Since 1981, the Ohio Revised Code states that voters MAY NOT wear t-shirts, pins, hats, etc. that depict or promote a candidate or issue. I (JSK) called the office of the Ohio Secretary of State (Jennifer Brunner, Democrat) to confirm this fact. However, they explained that NO ONE WILL BE TURNED AWAY for this behavior. Those donning such materials will be encouraged to remove the hat or button, or to conceal the shirt's message by turning it inside out or zipping up their jacket, for example. Individuals refusing to abide by the Code will still be allowed to vote, but will be eligible to be prosecuted for violating the Code.
