Preamble read by Judy
TOM LOHRE on a novel way to teach painting to children
Clifton Professional artists gather 9 pm he last Wed. of each month at Olives restaurant. (Music, actors, painting, ...)
Born out of the idea to make children’s little drawings ad make them into big painting.
First we look at the drawings and pick a series of colors. Then I freehand their drawing onto canvas, and give them the paits, and then they fill in the colors. I then teach them to apply paint quickly and effectively to this large, 3 x 5 canvas. I use five to eight year olds. They have big motivation at young ages. Its a lot of one on one.
It takes three intense hours on my part; the kids have a lot of fun.
I was surprised that the kids were so focused, and they stayed focused for a long time.
It is a one on one experience.
(cost) two canvases, two kids, maybe $500.
(how many kids). Just two so far. There is a window, age 4 to 8 when you can get some great paintings out of them.
(How young can you start?) I think 4 is a good age. For years, when I have been at a client’s home painting them, I often have got the children to do paintings on the side.
(After that “window” closes, what does their art become?) Children start learning more about art history, understanding the various types of art, and it stalls their progress. As children, we know how to write, play music, and paint, but we don’t continue.
Ginger: a friend took cameras to the poorest kids in Appalachia. Wonderful photographs! But after they grew up, no one of them continued.
Tom: right. They get married, have jobs...
Carolyn there is a movie, “Children of Brothels”, a photographer went to the untouchables in India. She documented these children living in brothels. Followed 8 or 10 children, got them to boarding school. Some of them went back to the brothel. One studied art in the US.
Ginger: I met that boy. The day after he was accepted to NYU film school. He was over the room.
Nancy not surprising. People want to be with those we know.
Elaine when my children were in elementary school there was no budget for art. So we went to the art museum, borrowed paintings, brought them to the school. ... Fabergé eggs. ... I studied fine arts at Edgecliff, but what do you do after graduation? ... My favorite age was under 4th grade (age 8).
Tom after a certain point, you have to learn some rules, skills.
Ginger people are beginning to learn that art need not be product oriented. Studying art can teach people creativity in many areas...how to adapt and expand. Cities, “The creative class” book, are learning.
Carolyn they are starting to investigate how to use art to teach science, history, etc.
Ginger the “Ascent of Man”, TV series, Yakov Bronowski scientist bridging art and science. Available at library, at Blockbuster.
In one scene he was at a place of mass graves, like Auschwitz, showing ponds built over the mass graves, he has suit on, walks fully clothed into the water up to his waist ... Reaches down into the water, pulls up this muck from the bottom of the pond, crying.
JUSTIN ON THE NADER FOR PRESIDENT CAMPAIGN
I am supporting Ralph Nader because it is important to take issues back on to the table, e.g. Universal health care. Single payer system. 40 million Americans are uninsured... Leading cause of bankruptcy is health expense. The majority of Americans support extra tax so as to have healthcare for everyone. And 59% of M.D.s support single payer healthcare. It has been taken off the table due to our campaign financing situation.
Also a full corporate and military out of Iraq. Obama told Amy Goodman that he would leave contractors. Obama is much more sane than McCain, wants to redeploy the troops from Iraq to Afghanistan. Obama wants to increas the Pentagon budget. The General Accounting Office and even Generals saying that there is lots of redundancy and waste in the military. We spend more money than all other countries combined for our military. ... Obama is to the right of McCain on Israel. ... Jimmy Carter, Palestine: Peace not Apartheid is the solution favored by Nader. Two state solution. Obama said, “No split Jerusalem”.
Saying NO to nuclear energy. Invest heavily to solar and sustainable energy generation. ... End corporate personhood.
The major candidates don’t address these issues.
Monday Sept 8 at 7:30 Memorial Hall on Elm St. 1229 next to Music Hall, rally to call for opening up the debates to non partisan control. Ralph Nader will be speaking here at this rally.
Ralph will be on the ballot in 45 states, write in everywhere else. People should have choices, should be able to listen to him. Also, there are many sound polls showing that Nader pulling more support from McCain than from Obama. Nader appeals strongly to many Republicans.

· Support Barbara Wolf’s courageous stand against the senseless war in Iraq
Friday, September 5th at 6:00 PM
In front of the Justice Center
(Corner of Sycamore Street and Central Parkway)
On September 26, 2006, Barbara Wolf wanted to end the war in Iraq. She went to the office of U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot and requested him to sign the Declaration of Peace. She was arrested and convicted of trespassing. She refused to do community service as a punishment, so she was sentenced to 10 days in the Hamilt0n County Jail.
10-Day Cost of the Iraq War
10 Days= $720, 000, 0000
10 Days= 5 Dead U.S. and Coalition Soldiers
10 Days= 192 Dead Iraqis
Support Barbara Wolf’s courageous stand against the senseless war in Iraq
"Visit" her in Jail, Write her a note if you can, and Join us Friday, Sept 5 at 6pm for a rally in support of her and insupport of ending the war in Iraq now!
YOU'RE INVITED TO "VISIT" BARB WOLF IN JAIL
Wednesday, 3 September, and Friday, 5 September, from Noon to 7:30PM
Saturday, 6 September, from 9AM to 4:30 PM
THE PROCEDURE:
Go to the jail and try to register to visit her. If you get in, great. Visit her.
If you don't get in, come outside and sign the guest book.
Take a walk to the back of the jail and wave at her window. Maybe she'll wave back.
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES:
Feel free to do some work or something below her window. One local director, for example, will audition an actor there. Perhaps you're a clown who'd like a captive audience. Or you need to make a flower arrangement. Or you're a dancer. Or you need a sidewalk on which to do your daily yoga practice. Or maybe there's something you've always wanted to read out loud to somebody who can see you reading but can't hear you. Maybe you just want to do some paperwork in the sun. This is your chance.
IN CASE YOU'RE CURIOUS:
BARB WOLF is sixty seven years old and, as she says, "old enough to know."
SHE'S IN JAIL for sitting in Congressman Steve Chabot's office almost two years ago, trying to get him to help stop the war in Iraq.
SHE'S THERE FOR TEN DAYS because she refused to do twenty hours of community service, saying that she's been doing community service all her life, that she loves doing community service, and that she doesn't want a thing she loves redefined as punishment.
IN THOSE TEN DAYS, the war will cost American taxpayers an additional three billion three hundred forty million dollars.
IN THOSE TEN DAYS, if they're average, five American and coalition soldiers will be killed.
IN THOSE TEN DAYS, if they're average, one hundred ninety two Iraqi citizens will be killed.
The books some of us will be reading while manning the Guest Book are COLLATERAL DAMAGE by Chris Hedges and Laila Al-Arian and WHAT HAPPENED HERE by Eliot Weinberger. You might want to read or reread them yourself sometime.

This Wed. will be another of our weekly phone bank things ... Those who choose to participate will get up from the salon table at 7 (instead of 8) and go in another room to do our calls. (the Salon will carry on as usual.) The campaign will provide a few extra cell phones, but if you have one, do bring it.
We will call people in Clifton, Northside, ... Can't remember the other neighborhoods that Jackie is organizing. She's our "captain" organizer.
Bring friends! All are, of course, also welcome to join us for the pot luck at 5:45. Tell them not to ring, but just come in. Tell them to park on Lafayette (unless handicapped).
Jackie will provide scripts and call lists etc. We will be calling "persuadable" people. People who are Democrats but don't always vote; people who are independents, etc.
This will be fun! Please send this message to as many people as you can think of who might conceivably join us...for one or more Wednesdays.
RSVP not necessary. Just come.

VOLUNTEER TO KNOCK ON DOORS FOR PEACE, SEPT 20
Hey friends -
At our peace meeting this week, we talked about a variety of helpful, effective actions we can take. A full report will be forthcoming. One thing a number of our small groups agreed on was it is important to talk with people & equip folks with tools to make a difference on issues of peace. . . Now we have an opportunity to join this historic action. We need 25,000 volunteers across the country to make this goal ! Can you join us?
MILLION DOORS FOR PEACE
September 20, 2008 - National Day of Action: Be part of one of the most ambitious and innovative anti-war activities to date!
On Saturday, September 20, thousands of volunteers across the U.S. will knock on a Million Doors for Peace.
United for Peace and Justice is partnering with Pax Christi, US Action/True Majority, Win Without War, and other organizations to make this day the biggest peace action of 2008.
Volunteer doorknockers will ask people to sign an antiwar petition directed to Congress. Our message: End this immoral war, bring our troops home, and invest in America's future. In addition, we will encourage people to join local anti-war groups, engage in voter education work, and become a part of the organized antiwar movement in their area.
In order to reach a million people in a single day, we must organize at least 25,000 volunteers in all 50 states. Peace groups have never implemented such an elaborate communication and organizing plan before now, but with new and traditional communications tools available, we anticipate success with this groundbreaking, grassroots project. This project will not end on September 20, but it will be a new beginning of a more organized grassroots movement for peace and justice.
Training materials, petitions, local groups to canvass with in your area, and handouts will be provided.
