Weekly 9/18/08 - 5

Hey Obama supporters!  We are having phone banking right here at the house every Wednesday 7 – 8 pm.  The campaign provides the cell phones, call lists, instructions.  It’s fun.  This is significant, important work and we need your help.  Surrounded by friends it’s painless.  Come for pot luck at 5:45, participate in the salon conversation, and then peel off with me for phone banking... Or stay at the table and talk.
This week we had Co. commissioner candidate Chris Dole, a democrat running as an independent against Greg Hartman, Republican, whose only qualification is that his father was Bush’ and Cheney’s attorney, and who is currently Clerk of Courts.  Chris is well qualified and will probably win.  Whooeee!  Read our table notes for his spiel.

CHRIS DOLE for Co. Commission

Gwen:  We knew that there was to be no opposition of Greg Hartman and Todd Portune; a deal between the parties so that they could save money for the national campaign.  So I am a Green party person, and we were delighted that Chris was running.

Chris:  On Friday Jan 4 I’m watching the news, heard Todd Portune talking about a deal.  The Republican Party would not endorse the Rep. candidates opposing Todd, and the Dems. Wouldn’t put up anyone to run against Greg Hartman.  I figure it the Dems could have had a third seat on the Co. Commission.  Also the Dems are not running anyone to  oppose Sherriff, the Prosecutor, the Co Engineer, and most judges.  I thought the “deal” was ridiculous.  So I filed as an independent.  The Bd of Elections said I’d need 2895 valid signatures on a petition to run.  That means I’d need at least 4000 signatures to run.  ... But the electrician union were excited (I am an electrician), they backed me.  Everyone was upset about the “deal”.  People jumped up  to help me get signatures.
Then I called the Enquirer.  They interviewed.  They did a couple stories on me.  City Beat was very good, Kevin Osborn wrote a couple articles.  WLW TV did a story.  ... Ended up with 4772 Signatures.  88% validity rate, higher validity rate than anyone they every had seen.

I am a registered Democrat.  But the Party is not supporting me.
(How’s come an electrician, Crosby Township Trustee is qualified to be Co Commissioner.)

The township trustee is a smaller version as Co Commissioners, ... According to the state code.  Three commissioners and a clerk.  You do not have to be a lawyer...we have a lawyer there at our meetings.  Same kinds of decisions: roads; zoning; ... I have been working with the Regional Planning commission for 9 years.  I know the Co administrator and the 4 assist. administrators:  Job and Fam Services; Public Works; Economic Devel; Budget.
The township trustees have lots of contact with the Commissioners.  (Story about an annexation proposal... Todd P. the best.  )  I started attending more and more Commission meetings.  Found that the Commissioners were not well informed about county issues.  I have attended workshops and trainings for years.

David  (What kind of new big ideas do you want to bring?)
Chris  There are other areas than the Banks development.  I have no problem with gambling.  ...  Lawrenceburg IN gives a lot of money  for infrastructure etc. to attract new Honda Plant, for instance.
I like the mass transit idea.  In 2002 Metro had a plan, light rail and hubs.  But it ignored the whole West side.  City streetcar plan is good, but needs to go farther north.  Builds excitement, energy in neighborhoods again.
When people call with questions about roads, about development, about the co. engineer, to give them right answers.

Daisy  What is a co commission meeting like?
Chris  The administrator presents recommendations, e.g. Money given to Job and Family Services or Veterans Commmission... And the commissioners decide.

Gwen  Greg Hartman, Chris’ opponent has no relevant experience; at any level of gov’t; his father was Bush’ and chenny’s lawyer (this is unconfirmed);  he has been clerk of courts.

Chris  it is about making wise decisions for the people.  There are 4,000 jobs in the county.
(Privatizing?)  I don’t like it.  There are contractors and sub contractors, and the county is not empowered to oversee.  Sometimes the sub contractors don’t pay their employees right...

(Ellen:  What are your chances?)
Chris  Greg Hartman has no signs...  My chances are excellent.  The democrats will vote not for Greg Hartman; I figure I will get the Dem. Vote and the Independent vote.  Those people won’t vote for the Republican Hartman.  I’ve got the Unions behind me solidly.
Chris, Gwen and Elaine Bradford at the Salon last night.

Think about it:  “President Obama gives inaugural address”; “President Obama gives State of the Nation”; “President Obama meets with world leaders”.  President Obama giving Kennedy style press conferences.  This is going to be so cool.  Picture it.  Imagine it.  Enjoy imagining it.  Manifest it!
Thanks to Julie Murray for forwarding this idea.  Our thoughts are powerful.

Ohio voters: visit Obama’s Voter Registration and Registration Checker Site

Ellen --

<http://my.barackobama.com/page/m2/55c137c8/6bf3ea11/723e248e/1188ab1a/VEsH/>  In Ohio, you know how few votes it can take to tip an election. You probably also know more than one Buckeye who isn't registered to vote.

The registration deadline on October 6th is fast approaching.

Tell your friends, family, and neighbors to check out our new, one-stop voter registration website. <http://oh.barackobama.com/OHregister>

 Just forward this message.

Our new Ohio registration site makes it easier than ever to get registered. Instead of tracking down the right forms, all you need to do is answer a few basic questions and you'll have everything you need to become registered. You can also:
  • Confirm your registration status
  •  Apply to vote absentee
If you need to confirm that you're registered or you'd like to learn more, take a minute to visit the site right now:

http://oh.barackobama.com/OHregister <http://my.barackobama.com/page/m2/55c137c8/6bf3ea11/723e248e/1188ab1a/VEsE/>

This race is too close and too important to stay home on Election Day.

If you take the time to register and vote -- and make sure everyone you know is registered as well -- we'll be able to turn the tide of the past eight years.

It's people just like you who will transform this nation.

Thanks for everything you are doing in Ohio,

 Barack

PHONE BANKING for Obama at the Salon

This Wed. will be another of our weekly phone bank things ... Those who choose to participate will get up from the salon table at 7 (instead of 8) and go in another room to do our calls. (the Salon will carry on as usual.) The campaign will provide a few extra cell phones, but if you have one, do bring it.

We will call people in Clifton, Northside, CUF ... Can't remember the other neighborhoods that Jackie is organizing.  She's our "captain" organizer.

Bring friends!  All are, of course, also welcome to join us for the pot luck at 5:45.  Tell them not to ring, but just come in.  Tell them to park on Lafayette (unless handicapped).

Jackie will provide scripts and call lists etc.  We will be calling "persuadable" people.  People who are Democrats but don't always vote; people who are independents, etc.

This will be fun!  Please send this message to as many people as you can think of who might conceivably join us...for one or more Wednesdays.

RSVP not necessary.  Just come.

Ellen

VOLUNTEER TO KNOCK ON DOORS FOR PEACE, SEPT 20

Hey friends -
At our peace meeting this week, we talked about a variety of helpful, effective actions we can take. A full report will be forthcoming. One thing a number of our small groups agreed on was it is important to talk with people & equip folks with tools to make a difference on issues of peace. . . Now we have an opportunity to join this historic action. We need 25,000 volunteers across the country to make this goal ! Can you join us?

MILLION DOORS FOR PEACE

September 20, 2008 - National Day of Action: Be part of one of the most ambitious and innovative anti-war activities to date!

On Saturday, September 20, thousands of volunteers across the U.S. will knock on a Million Doors for Peace.

United for Peace and Justice is partnering with Pax Christi, US Action/True Majority, Win Without War, and other organizations to make this day the biggest peace action of 2008.

Volunteer doorknockers will ask people to sign an antiwar petition directed to Congress. Our message: End this immoral war, bring our troops home, and invest in America's future. In addition, we will encourage people to join local anti-war groups, engage in voter education work, and become a part of the organized antiwar movement in their area.

In order to reach a million people in a single day, we must organize at least 25,000 volunteers in all 50 states. Peace groups have never implemented such an elaborate communication and organizing plan before now, but with new and traditional communications tools available, we anticipate success with this groundbreaking, grassroots project. This project will not end on September 20, but it will be a new beginning of a more organized grassroots movement for peace and justice.

Training materials, petitions, local groups to canvass with in your area, and handouts will be provided.

Michael Moore is giving you his new movie!  Free.

Friends,

As you may have heard, I've decided to make my new film, "Slacker Uprising,"
http://slackeruprising.com/ available for free to everyone in the United States and Canada. It is the first time ever that a major feature-length film is debuting as a free download on the internet -- legally. I am doing this for two reasons:

1. Next year it will be 20 years since my first film, "Roger & Me," so I'd like to give those of you who've supported my work over the years a thank you gift in the form of a brand new movie; and

2. I hope the release and wide distribution of this new movie will help to bring out millions of young and new voters on November 4th.

"Slacker Uprising" takes place in the wake of "Fahrenheit 9/11," during the run-up to the 2004 election, as I traveled for 42 days across America, visiting 62 cities in a failed attempt to remove George W. Bush from office. My goal was to help turn out a record number of young voters and others who had never voted before. (That part was a success. Young adults voted in greater numbers than in any election since 18-year-olds were given the right to vote. And the youth vote was the only age group that John Kerry won.)

What I encountered during the tour and the filming was both inspiring and frightening, so I thought, hey, this might make for a funny and enlightening movie! Each night, thousands would show up to volunteer in the Slacker Army against Bush. This drove local Republicans nuts. In one state they tried to have me arrested. At two colleges, rich donors offered to donate more money to the college if they would ban me from campus. Nearly a half-dozen universities kept the Slacker Uprising tour off their campuses. But there was no stopping this movement. By the time we got to Florida, 16,000 people a night were showing up.

It was clear that young people were the ones who were going to save the day -- just as they are in this year's election.

On Tuesday, September 23rd, you will be able to stream, download, or burn a DVD of "Slacker Uprising," free of charge. The distribution is being organized by Robert Greenwald's Brave New Films (they're the great people behind "OUTFOXED: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism" and "WAL-MART: The High Cost of Low Price").

To sign up for the download of "Slacker Uprising," click here. You have my blanket permission to share the movie with your friends, to set up screenings in your communities or theaters, to show it on your campuses -- all at no charge. I encourage you to rally voters with it, to raise funds for your favorite candidates, to air it on your local cable access channels or web broadcasts. You can also click here to request a free DVD of "Slacker Uprising" for your school or university library.

As I said, this is a movie for you, my fans -- a little 97-minute digital treat that I think you'll really enjoy. I hope you'll check out SlackerUprising.com and download it a week from today, next Tuesday, September 23rd.

Thanks again for coming to my movies all these years. It's meant a lot to me. I feel very privileged and blessed, and I am honored to be in this "virtual" community with you as we try to reclaim our beloved country.

Yours,

Michael Moore

P.S. The world premiere of "Slacker Uprising" will take place in one of the great slacker capitals of this country, Ann Arbor, Michigan, this Thursday at 5pm at the historic Michigan Theater. Admission is free on a first-come, first-served basis. If you're in the neighborhood, hope to see you there!

P.P.S. If you live outside the U.S. and Canada, I'm sorry that I don't own the rights to make this film available to you for free. But it will be coming to a theater, video store or television network near you soon.

P.P.P.S. If you are not part of the "downloadable" generation, I am making a low-cost DVD of "Slacker Uprising" available at Amazon, Netflix and your local stores in October.

Hello everyone,

This past spring I participated in an Agenda 360 community engagement forum. The information gathered from these forums has been combined with the work of the Agenda 360 Action Teams to identify visions for Southwest Ohio and priority initiatives to help us achieve those visions.

They are asking for input from people all around the Cincinnati region to determine how to transform Cincinnati into a leading metropolitan region.

Please take a few moments to fill out this survey. All answers will be completely confidential.

Click here <http://vovici.com/wsb.dll/s/31f5g36fc1?renderlang=eng>  to participate in this important survey.

NOW (national organization of Women) Comes out for Obama, Criticizes Palin

Not Every Woman Supports Women's Rights
August 29, 2008
Statement of NOW PAC Chair Kim Gandy on the Selection of Sarah Palin as John McCain's Vice Presidential Pick

Sen. John McCain's choice of Alaska governor Sarah Palin as his running mate is a cynical effort to appeal to disappointed Hillary Clinton voters and get them to vote, ultimately, against their own self-interest.

Gov. Palin may be the second woman vice-presidential candidate on a major party ticket, but she is not the right woman. Sadly, she is a woman who opposes women's rights, just like John McCain.

The fact that Palin is a mother of five who has a 4-month-old baby, a woman who is juggling work and family responsibilities, will speak to many women. But will Palin speak FOR women? Based on her record and her stated positions, the answer is clearly No.

In a gubernatorial debate, Palin stated emphatically that her opposition to abortion was so great, so total, that even if her teenage daughter was impregnated by a rapist, she would "choose life" -- meaning apparently that she would not permit her daughter to have an abortion.

Palin also had to withdraw her appointment of a top public safety commissioner who had been reprimanded for sexual harassment, although Palin had been warned about his background through letters by the sexual harassment complainant.

What McCain does not understand is that women supported Hillary Clinton not just because she was a woman, but because she was a champion on their issues. They will surely not find Sarah Palin to be an advocate for women.

Sen. Joe Biden is the VP candidate who appeals to women, with his authorship and championing of landmark domestic violence legislation, support for pay equity, and advocacy for women around the world.

Finally, as the chair of NOW's Political Action Committee, I am frequently asked whether NOW supports women candidates just because they are women. This gives me an opportunity to once again answer that question with an emphatic 'No.' We recognize the importance of having women's rights supporters at every level but, like Sarah Palin, not every woman supports women's rights.

National Organization for Women PAC Endorses Obama-Biden
STATEMENT OF KIM GANDY
Chair, National Organization for Women Political Action Committee (NOW PAC)
September 16, 2008

It is with great enthusiasm that I announce today, on behalf of the nation's oldest and largest women's rights organization, that the National Organization for Women Political Action Committee (NOW PAC) proudly endorses Sen. Barack Obama for President of the United States.

It is no coincidence that I am joined in this announcement by so many allied organizations that collectively represent a broad and diverse cross-section of U.S. women. From teachers to social workers, from business owners to college students, women in this country are lining up behind the candidate who is out there every day standing up -- clearly and consistently -- for women. Women of all ages, races and ethnicities are coming together in support of Sen. Obama and his pledge to fulfill this country's promise of equal opportunity for our daughters as well as all our sons.

Although it is very unusual for us to endorse in a presidential election, this is an unprecedented candidate and an unprecedented time for our country. The NOW PAC reviewed Sen. Obama's record and public statements on issues that disproportionately affect the women of this nation, and I spoke with him at length about his commitment to women's equality. For example:

On pay equity. Sen. Obama is a co-sponsor of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act, legislation to end wage discrimination against women.

On reproductive rights. Sen. Obama is a co-sponsor of the Prevention First Act, to strengthen access to contraception and reproductive health care, and prevent unwanted pregnancies. He strongly supports Roe v. Wade and will oppose any efforts to overturn it.

On violence against women. Sen. Obama supports the continued reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act -- of which Sen. Joe Biden is the chief sponsor -- as well as the Security and Financial Empowerment (SAFE) Act, which is legislation to provide legal, medical and financial support to victims of domestic violence.

On the Supreme Court. Sen. Obama opposed the nominations of George Bush's extreme right-wing nominees to the Supreme Court, who have consistently ruled against women's rights.

For more than a decade, Barack Obama has said "yes" to women's rights, while John McCain has consistently said "no" - NO to pay equity, NO to contraceptive access and reproductive rights, NO to appointing Supreme Court judges who will uphold women's rights and civil rights, NO to funding shelters and other anti-violence programs, and NO to supporting working moms and dads with policies that support work/life balance.

NOW supported Sen. Hillary Clinton in the primary, and now we join with her in saying "NO" -- No Way, No How, No McCain! And we proudly stand arm-in-arm with her in putting our hopes and our dreams, our hard work and our hard-earned money, behind the next President of the United States -- Barack Obama, and his running mate, longtime friend and ally of women, Sen. Joe Biden.

Obama and the Palin Effect
By Deepak Chopra

Sometimes politics has the uncanny effect of mirroring the national psyche even when nobody intended to do that. This is perfectly illustrated by the rousing effect that Gov. Sarah Palin had on the Republican convention in Minneapolis this week. On the surface, she outdoes former Vice President Dan Quayle as an unlikely choice, given her negligent parochial expertise in the complex affairs of governing. Her state of Alaska has less than 700,000 residents, which reduces the job of governor to the scale of running one-tenth of New York City. By comparison, Rudy Giuliani is a towering international figure. Palin’s pluck has been admired, and her forthrightness, but her real appeal goes deeper.

She is the reverse of Barack Obama, in essence his shadow, deriding his idealism and turning negativity into a cause for pride. In psychological terms the shadow is that part of the psyche that hides out of sight, countering our aspirations, virtue, and vision with qualities we are ashamed to face: anger, fear, revenge, violence, selfishness, and suspicion of “the other.” For millions of Americans, Obama triggers those feelings, but they don’t want to express them. He is calling for us to reach for our higher selves, and frankly, that stirs up hidden reactions of an unsavory kind. (Just to be perfectly clear, I am not making a verbal play out of the fact that Sen. Obama is black. The shadow is a metaphor widely in use before his arrival on the scene.) I recognize that psychological analysis of politics is usually not welcome by the public, but I believe such a perspective can be helpful here to understand Palin’s message. In her acceptance speech Gov. Palin sent a rousing call to those who want to celebrate their resistance to change and a higher vision.

Look at what she stands for:
