Obama Campaign Update

From Dawn Stohr:
Right now we are getting a bunch of new field organizers, so we are really excited to bring them on board.  So that means there will be new faces in neighborhoods, and lots of new activities going on.  By Next Week I should be able to have a list of field organizers and phone numbers but in the meantime, if  you want to participate in the campaign, contact me, Dawn Stohr  513 370 4308.

This Friday Aug 10 at 6:30-8:30 in Burnet Woods by the Band Stand we are having a gathering:  bring snacks (chips?), or drinks or a desert.  Meat and buns will be provided.  Please bring condiments.  Paper plates etc. will be provided.  Purpose is to meet each other and bring supporters together, to brainstorm ideas for future events.

The campaign focus now is changing from canvasing for volunteers, to VOTER REGISTRATION!  We are absolutely convinced that if we can get our supporters all registered and to the polls on Nov. 6, we will carry the county!

PLEASE ATTEND BOARD OF ELECTIONS MEETING:  WE NEED EXTENDED EARLY VOTING HOURS - WEEKENDS, EVENINGS!
Most of the other Ohio Boards of Elections have voted concerning the possibility of extending the hours for early voting;  unfortunately they have decided to NOT extend them beyond regular business hours.  We hope that our Board will decide on Aug 16, 9:00 AM to extend early voting hours to evenings and weekends in order to facilitate voting by working people.  If you can attend this meeting, by all means do.

OFA has a goal to register 60 persons every week!  (Ellen asks, "How many people have to be contacted to get those 60?")  It depends on the way you contact them.  We can canvass because we have data of where unregistered voters have recently moved [through the Post Office].  The very best way to get a lot of people registered is through voter registration drives.  That's where I need help.  I get a lot of people registered just by walking the street.  So I need to know about festivals and other gatherings, sports events, etc. where people will be coming together.  If you know about a gathering coming up, please let me know!  dstohr@ofaoh.com

See you Friday evening!    Dawn

The board of election is holding a meeting on Thursday, August 16, 2012 @ 9:00am. Regarding two important issues: early voting hours (if extended hours will be allowed) and tea party submitted voter challenges. Challenges are focused in Cincinnati African American neighborhoods. These issues are just the tip of the iceberg. Please see if we can get folks to this meeting this is so very important to us getting out our voter’s for this election and all elections going forward.

Thanks in advance for the sharing this with your folks we should pack the room.

Public meeting on Sewer Overflows spilling into Mill Creek

MSD, our Metropolitan Sewer District is required by law to do some clean up.  The public input is sought as to how.

Please join the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (MSD) on the evening of hursday, August 16 or Thursday, August 23, 2012 to learn about and provide input on potential solutions for eliminating up to 2 billion gallons of combined sewer overflows (CSO) into the Mill Creek by 2018 (during Phase 1 of MSD’s Consent Decree).  The meetings are open to the community.

An invitation (with map) is attached.

What are the Potential Solutions?

One solution is a traditional “grey” approach that includes a deep underground storage tunnel and enhanced high-rate treatment facility to capture and treat overflows before they reach the Mill Creek.

Another solution is a sustainable/hybrid approach that primarily seeks to control overflows by reducing the amount of stormwater entering combined sewers during heavy rains.  This approach includes constructing new storm sewers, installing stormwater detention or retention basins and restoring existing or defunct streams.  The proposed Lick Run Alternative (www.projectgroundwork.org/lickrun) is an example.

The solutions are detailed and compared in the Lower Mill Creek Partial Remedy “Alternatives Evaluation Preliminary Findings Report,” which is available for public review and feedback at www.projectgroundwork.org/lowermillcreek.

The preferred remedy, once selected, must be submitted to federal and state regulators by December 31, 2012.

Public Feedback

MSD will be taking public comment on the solutions through September 3, 3012.  Comments can be submitted in the following ways:

•            At the Community Town Hall meetings – either verbally or by comment card

•            By email at MSD.Communications@cincinnati-oh.gov

•            By phone at MSD’s Engineering Customer Service Line, (513) 557-3594.

All comments will be submitted to Cincinnati City Council and the Hamilton County Commissioners.

Photography Show at Iris Bookshop on Maincurator: William Messer

Iris exhibition reveals dark stories of survival as it plumbs the transformational and healing power of clothing and costume through photography.

Another Me: Transformations from Pain to Power

Photographs by Achinto Bhadra

July 23 - October 12, 2012

Iris BookCafe and Gallery's first of two exhibition contributions to Cincinnati's initial FOTOFOCUS 2012 biennale is Another Me: Transformations from Pain to Power, by Kolkata photographer Achinto Bhardra.

Clothing and costuming, the bedposts of fashion, have long been connected to protection, identity, status, even power. Another Me reveals deeper connections to survival and regeneration. In this moving, five-year project, women and girls – most survivors of kidnapping or sale into sexual slavery – reassert personal identity before the camera. Bhadra (with counselor Harleen Walla) silently guided women at the Sanlaap shelter in Kolkata, India through a journey of psychological healing, recording their imaginative re-invisionings of themselves as human, animistic and divine beings of power, anger, love, revenge, protection and freedom. Through this visual metamorphosis, facilitated by the simultaneous concealment and revelation of make-up and masks, the young women (most in their teens, one as young as eight) find new ways to project themselves and, in the process, rediscover their voices. Many of their stories accompany their chosen photographic identities.

The installation at Iris arises from a 2008 meeting in the south of France between Bhardra and Iris curator William Messer, introduced by François Hébel, director of the Rencontres d'Arles. Messer promised to try to help get the work seen in the US, and made several years' fruitless proposals to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center before deciding to present the work at Iris within FOTOFOCUS, as something of a counterpoint to the exhibitions being offered at the city's local museums (Edward Steichen's fashion photographs at the Taft Museum and fashion photographer Herb Ritts at the Cincinnati Art Museum). The exhibition is made possible by the Terre des Hommes Foundation of Lausanne, Switzerland, its office in Katmandu, and the Save the Children Fund, and comes to Iris courtesy of the photographer and the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy, Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Special thanks also to FOTOFOCUS for assistance with the exhibition and program.

Final Friday exhibition reception, September 28, 7 - 10 PM.

FotoFocus reception and Artist's Talk, Sunday, September 30, 2 - 5 PM

Another Me: Transformations from Pain to Power, Photographs by Achinto Bhadra runs from July 23 through October 12, 2012 at Iris BookCafe and Gallery, 1331 Main Street, Over-the-Rhine, Cincinnati. For more information call 381-BOOK (2665) or Julie Fay at (513) 260-8434. High-resolution picture files available upon request.

Iris hours: Monday thru Thursday 8am - 9pm. Friday 8am - 7pm, Saturday 10am - 7pm, Sunday 11am - 9pm.

NEW TRAFFIC LAW - 2010 If a patrol car is pulled over to the side of the road, you have to change to the next lane (away from the stopped vehicle) OR slow down to at least 20 mph under the posted speed limit.  Every state exceptHawaii and Maryland and the D.C. has this law. In California , the Move-over law became operative on January 1, 2010 ..  Fines are REALLY heavy for violations, and most drivers don't know about this.

ARE GMOs MORE THREATENING THAN NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION, THAN CLIMATE CHANGE?

by Ellen Bierhorst

Yes, says Jeffrey Smith.

Wikipedia article on GMO:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetically_modified_food_controversies

Jeffrey Smith's organization Institute for Responsible Technology: http://www.responsibletechnology.org/about

"

A review published in 2009 by Dona and Arvanitoyannis concluded that "results of most studies with GM foods indicate that they may cause some common toxic effects such as hepatic, pancreatic, renal, or reproductive effects and may alter the hematological, biochemical, and immunologic parameters".[13][14] However responses to this review in 2009 and 2010 note that the Dona and Arvanitoyannis concentrated on articles with an anti-GM bias that have been refuted by scientists in peer-reviewed articles elsewhere - for example the 35S promoter, stability of transgenes, antibiotic marker genes and the claims for toxic effects of GM foods.[15][16][17] In 2007, a review by Domingo of the toxicity by searching in the Publimed database using 12 search terms, cited 68 references, found that the "number of references" on the safety of GM/transgenic crops was "surprisingly limited" and questioned whether the safety of genetically modified food has been demonstrated;..."  (Wikipedia article  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetically_modified_food_controversies

I found Jeffrey smith's video  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1Ag_w-vAJI&feature=plcp

(about 12 minutes) to be compelling and alarming.  Jeffrey speaks rapidly, clearly, intelligently and with a remarkable grasp of his material.  I was impressed.  Maybe he is not a PhD scientist (or maybe he is) but he is convincing to me, and cited many scientific studies.

The pile of money behind Monsanto and others' promotion of GMOs is huge... more than big enough to co-opt the FDA (Food and Drug Administration, whose directors of food safety have rotated in and out of Monsanto's executive suites) and to suppress evidence showing potential dangers of GMOs (genetically modified organisms) aka GE crops (Genetically Engineered).

Smith thinks that since the pollen from GE crops blows over into non-GE fields, corrupting them as well, this is a disaster that cannot be recalled as you would a nuclear missile gone towards the wrong target.

What got me the most were the claims that this epidemic of GI tract disease, notably celiac/Sprue/gluten intollerance, and autism (!) is because of the dominance in the American diet of GMO wheat and corn.  Arrgh!  I KNOW autism is epidemic.  I KNOW that allergies and "gluten intollerance" disease is rampant.  I know from my reading about Cancer (See Suzanne Sommers' books, like Knock Out) (See the movie about Dr. Burzinski: http://www.burzynskimovie.com/) that the FDA is not on our side.  They are totally the pawns of the Big Pharma corporations ... and now I learn about Monsanto, Dow, et al.

Then there is the outrage of farmers in India being sold GMO cotton seed which turns out to not be suited to their conditions leading to crop failure and total bankruptcy of the farmers... have you heard about Indian farmers committing suicide?  I have.  Guess what.  Bad on Monsanto.

So look: I am now believing that the GMO threat really IS the worst danger facing us as a planet.  Yet another evidence that our system of regulation over corporate power is broken.  Please watch the video with Jeffrey Smith and let me know what you think:

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1Ag_w-vAJI&feature=plcp

and trust me enough to spend the 12 minutes watching it.

SUPER PACs:  COULD CHINA CONTROL OUR GOVERNMENT?

by Ellen

Super Political Action Committees, (super pacs) mean that anyone can contribute as much as they want to a political campaign.  Anyone?  Does that include foreign powers?  How about Martians?  I am sick about it.  Just got a well written memo from Robert Weissman, the head of (Ralph Nader founded) Public Citizen (http://www.citizen.org)  :  "All told, spending on the 2012 (presidential) election may hit $8 billion..."

And this: "The flood of secret money will carve a path of destruction and corruption on a scale unlike anything since Watergate."

I urge you to visit www.citizen.org and SIGN THE PETITION, then click on "support us" and join, get their email alerts...

Our political system is broken!  The huge number of working folks who support the tea party candidates and Republicans like John Kasich demonstrates resoundingly that money can buy elections.  Those people to me are like turkeys voting for Thanksgiving!  We must wake up and fix the system;  repealing Citizens United -- that open-the-sluice-gates Supreme Court decision -- is a good start.  Citizen.org is the best organization in my opinion to work for that end.  Then we must have election financing reform.  What we need, in the end, is for the citizenry to rise up and take back control; get interested in our government; shake off that feeling of powerlessness--who is paying to promulgate that notion? -- and reactivate Democracy.  Come on!  Ellen

Cincinnati Bans Injection Wells

Dear Supporter,

Today is a day to celebrate. Last week, Cincinnati City Council unanimously passed a city ordinance which bans fracking injection wells within our city limits. We are one step closer towards keeping toxic, radioactive drilling waste out of our city, and safer from injection wells which could cause water contamination or earthquakes. Cincinnati is the first council in the state to ban injection wells, and have carved out a very strategic legal method for other communities across Ohio to ban fracking waste disposal injection wells. Since Ohio is one of the only states where fracking waste injection wells are allowed, the push towards blocking Ohio from allowing out of state waste has taken a significant first step towards hopefully banning the practice statewide, and causing major problems for frackers across the entire country.

A very special thanks to council member Laure Quinlivan and the City Solicitor's office for heeding our call and taking strong action! Way to go, Cincinnati!

Will you THANK them?  (I did...ellen)

Email to: citycouncil@cincinnati-oh.gov

Sample language (feel free to use it):

"My name is _________, and I'm just writing today because I'm extremely pleased to hear that Cincinnati has banned injection wells. Not only does this show council's commitment to the health, safety, and welfare of our residents - it sends a message to dangerous industries that Cincinnati is not a dumping ground, literally or politically. Thank you for continuing to make Cincinnati a great place to live."

Media Clip highlights, for your enjoyment! Note: this story was picked up up by many other sources as well.
