Yes Magazine (see: http://www.yesmagazine.org/ ) is the brain child of David Korten.  An inspiring quarterly, they report on what is going right in our society, reform movements, success stories, and this issue is all about taking back power for the people from the corporations.  Very interesting.  In line with this, see the action on Thurs March 1 to protest Duke Energy paying zero federal tax on their huge corporate profits.  I asked Bentley Davis about this, and she responded, also interestingly, in the Articles section (LETTERS, see below).

that states something like this:  non-partisan patriotism is needed now... the value of cooperating with each other to really solve our problems, build a better society, get things done, rather than squabbling among ourself to no good end whatsoever.  To hell with polarization.  Up with cooperation!

So I sent in my absentee ballot this week (party primary, March 6... if you don't have your absentee ballot, go to the polls!).  Voted for Luke Brockmeier for Statehouse Rep, Democratic ticket.  Bothers me that his chief opponent, Denise Driehaus' record as a pro-lifer (anti abortion) is not well enough known.  Pass the word!  
Also voted for Liz Ping for Democratic State Central Committee (rather than Yvette Simpson), because she impressed me in her unsuccessful bid for statehouse rep a couple of years ago.  for Supreme Court justice I voted for Fanon Rucker over Wm. O'Neill because Bentley Davis recommended him.  Said she likes his positions, work and he runs a much better campaign than O'Neill has done.  

Incidentally, the St. John's Bible exhibit at Mt. St. Joseph was fabulous!  Closes at the end of the month.

          You are invited

      From Wikipedia: A salon is a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host (Womens Way of Ohio and Kentucky), held partly to amuse one another and partly to refine taste and increase our knowledge of the participants through conversation. (Yes, real conversations) These gatherings often consciously followed Horace's definition of the aims of poetry, "either to please or to educate" ("aut delectare aut prodesse est"). Look for our Salon each Friday evening during the entire month of February from 6:30PM to 8:30PM. Come to one or come to all. This will be held in a relaxed comfortable area of Women Writing For A Change located at 6906 Plainfield Road Cincinnati. This will be a potluck experience around a large table as we "enjoy" the philosophers (that would be you) of our time while sharing food. Join us! This is a free event, open to all. Donations for the lights and electric will always be appreicated.

      Hello, fellow poets and poetry lovers:

      February is a short month, even in a leap year, so the upcoming First Friday will be here before we know it.  This month we will be hosting a reading by the poets of the Cincinnati Writer's Project.

      Interfaith Immigration Justice Conference
       
      The Unitarian Universalist Council of Greater Cincinnati will conduct a major conference concerning immigration issues Saturday, March 3 at the Sharonville Convention Center.  Phoenix minister Reverend Susan Frederick-Gray will keynote, presenting info about developments nationally and in Arizona, which has been at the forefront of the nation immigration debate.
       
      The conference schedule will include three learning tracks, allowing participants to build their own programs.  27 speakers will provide information on a wide range of related topics including the Dream Act, Human Trafficking, Economic Realities, and Politics and Law. Confirmed speakers include Mike Corradini of Physicians for Human Rights, and Dayton City Manager Tim Riorden, several local immigrants and immigration justice professionals.

      (2) STOP KEYSTONE OIL SANDS PIPELINE !

      FROM AL GORE

      In the next few days, the U.S. Senate will vote to determine the fate of a pipeline that would link a vast tar sands deposit in Alberta, Canada to refineries on the Texas Gulf Coast. The construction of the pipeline has been blocked once by President Obama, who refused to buckle to pressure from Congress and industry to cut short the environmental review. Unfortunately, they are at it again.

      If approved and built, this pipeline, Keystone XL, would carry one of the most carbon-intensive sources of oil on the planet.

      For the next 24 hours, The Climate Reality Project is joining with350.org, MoveOn, League of Conservation Voters, Patagonia, Sierra Club, Energy Action Coalition and others to garner 500,000 signatures in a community-wide effort against the pipeline. Bill McKibben of 350.orgwill be on The Colbert Report tonight and will update the world on our progress -- so sign now, and then pass it on. We've come together before to stop production of this dangerous pollutant -- and with your help, we can do it again:

      If you care about the climate, you have to care about stopping this dangerous pollutant and the pipeline that carries it. After extensive research, the EPA estimates that annual carbon pollution from the Keystone XL pipeline could be at least 82% higher than average crude refined in America -- if not more.

      What does that number really mean? That's the same amount of pollution as adding 4.8 million cars to our roads: an additional 27 million metric tons of carbon pollution.

      Instead of pouring money into the production of more dirty oil, we need to work with Canada to invest in clean energy and energy efficiency. Clean energy is already the fastest growing industry in the U.S. and one of the fastest growing industries around the world.

      It doesn't matter where you live, or if the pipeline crosses into your home state. An increase of carbon pollution anywhere leads to climate change everywhere.

      I just returned from an expedition to the Antarctic Peninsula, where the temperature has risen by over 8 degrees in the last 60 years. And more than that, the glacial retreat caused by this temperature increase means sea level is rising and dangerous changes are happening around the globe. To put it simply: it means we are all living on thin ice.

HOUSES NEEDING REHAB

There are a number of houses in the eco-villages that could be purchased
very cheaply and renovated.  Our preference is someone who would like to buy
one and live there.  But, if you want to invest in one of these houses,
rehab and sell to a homeowner, that would be great as well.  The houses
range from $9,000 to $35,000.  None of them are in terrible shape.

This series of 10 books (one hasn't yet been translated into English) has
inspired this now world-wide movement (the USA is lagging far behind the
world, particularly Russia, on this one).  I personally resonate with what
another reader said: "After reading this RCS series, all the other books out
there simply aren't worth the paper they are printing on".

Since being introduced to these books two years ago, I have re-read the
series multiple times.  While extremely easy to read, they still continue to
take me deeper each time.  These books communicate the most personally and
culturally transformative vision and coherent plan for a beautiful future
for humanity that I am aware of - and your group is focusing on the key
ingredient. 

I am interested in exploring, with anyone interested, how to best adapt
these examples to Cincinnati; and I heard at least a bit of this "core"
concept in where your group is heading.

Thanks Ellen.

The real purpose isn't to have Duke volunteer to pay more, but to have the tax code changed.  These companies spend a phenomenal amount of money in lobbyists to make sure that loopholes and giveaways make it their way even if they are making billions of dollars in profit.  Small businesses with moderate profits don't get such loopholes.  
If you are interested, there is a lengthy, detailed report that can be found here:  http://ctj.org/corporatetaxdodgers/  Duke isn't alone, many of the energy companies are in the same financial place -- lots of profits, but no taxes.  GE is another one.  But so is FedEx and Verizon.  While we are singling out Duke in Cincinnati, the message is that all these corporations should be paying their fair share.  We can't be talking about "shared sacrifice" when discussing the federal budget, while giving these giant corporations a free ride.

Just returned from the opening of the office. Warren had heard that it was opening at 6:00 instead of 7:00 so we went early. A very good thing!  It was packed and by 7:00 they were not letting people in. Mayor Mallory spoke first, then the Senator from Cincinnati and a good number of powerful experience woman who work on Obama's campaign four years ago. Lauren Jones, the regional field director, is impressive.  Big note: the office is already too small.  A good sign, but with only two rooms it was not large enough for all of the people tonight. And this goes until 10:00 tonight!
 
A personal note is that it is so nice to be surrounded by Democrats in such large number, ( I would guess 200 people were there), and to hear positive speeches rather than negative rhetoric.

It's a new era.  Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street, now the uprising that prompted the Susan B Komen Foundation to reverse it's black-lining Planned Parenthood over abortion phobia.  I like the article here
by Seth Cohen.  I like the notion that an organization (Komen) can build a network, but it can't own or control it.  
And while I'm talking about social networking, let me soap-box a minute about inflammatory email chains that get forwarded all over the place by people who accept that some outrageous thing or other is true just because it sounds likely and tweaks a raw nerve.  Let's check the facts, friends!  before we forward these things to all and sundry on our  cyber rolodex.  Always check at Snopes.com or other fact checking websites before forwarding something calling for a constitutional amendment, etc. etc.  If Democracy is to work, we must be responsible about the information we pass on.

Inspiration to illumination - an Introduction to The Saint John's Bible [thru Sunday 26 February]: A masterpiece for the ages to inspire visitors of all faiths. An exhibit of prints from The Saint John's Bible, the 1st handwritten & illuminated Bible to be commissioned by a Benedictine Monastery in 500 years. This long-awaited, modern illustrated Bible took more than 1o years to complete the more than 1,150 pages. It consists of meticulously prepared calfskin vellum pages with elegant hand-lettering using feather quills & ancient inks. The images are exquisitely hand-colored by brush with hand-ground pigments by master calligrapher Donald Jackson along with a team of scribes & artists. The exhibit will include large fine art giclee prints & text that highlights the creative process from gathering calligraphers & illuminators, to traditional materials (gold & silver leaf & ancient Chinese inks), to creating a contemporary script. Also on display, 20 leaves from the Mount's collection of Original Leaves from Famous Bibles: Nine Centuries 1121-1935 A.D. Closing lecture & reception [Sunday 26 February @ 2pm @ Mater Dei Chapel]: "The Art of Biblical Interpretation" followed by a panel discussion & reception. Six@Six Lecture - Breaking Enigma [Thursday 1 March @ 6-8pm]: Breaking Enigma: An Example of World War II Codebreaking. The breaking of the German Enigma cipher machine was one of the greatest achievements of the Allied codebreakers during World War II. Collapse - theatre [thru Saturday 3 March]: In 2007, the Mississippi River Bridge in Minneapolis collapsed, killing 13 people & injuring 145. Hannah's husband, David, was driving one of the cars that went off the bridge, suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, but refuses to attend a support group. Hannah's life is falling apart; she can't get pregnant, she's 1 step away from losing her job, & she thinks her husband, who hasn't been to work for months, may be an alcoholic. He sits around the house, watering the plants with beer. When her flaky sister, Susan, arrives from California for "awhile," Hannah seems ready to unravel for good. Collapse is an uncomfortably funny exploration of the crumbling structures that undergird our bridges, economy, & intimate relationships.
