The YWCA Women's Art Gallery is celebrating its 20^th Anniversary and commemorates this important occasion with a stunning collection of artwork from trail-blazing local women artists.  For the opening, the YWCA is pulling out all the stops, including a rockin' band (the Wannabes), great food, fantastic art and fabulous company.

 

Twenty years ago, the gallery's first group exhibit featured local women artists who were making significant contributions to the art world.  For this, the anniversary show, The YWCA has invited 22 artists, most of who participated in that first show, to make a repeat performance for this special celebration.

The women in this exhibit offer a diverse spectrum of styles and mediums that are representative of the many contributions made by women artists. These pioneering women, relentless in their pursuit of creativity and self-expression, have paved the way for future generations of women artists.

 

The YWCA Women's Art Gallery continues to be the only gallery in Greater Cincinnati featuring exclusively women artists. This Anniversary Exhibit celebrates the gallery's long-standing history of empowering women in the arts. Over 300 local, regional and national women artists have showcased their work at the YWCA over the last two decades.

 

Celebrating 20 Years of Empowering Women Artists opens on Friday, October 14^th and runs through January 12, 2012.

 

The YWCA Women's Art Gallery is located on the second floor of the YWCA, 898 Walnut Street (on the corner of 9^th and Walnut), downtown.  Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., or by special arrangement – please call 241-7090 for more information.

Arranged by Clifton and Northside Community Councils along with Mt. Auburn
and Corryville community councils. 

When:

Wednesday, October 19th Starting at 7pm

Format:

The issues will be first with both sides of each issue getting 3 minutes.
And then, after all the issues' reps have spoken, there will be a few
minutes for questions from the floor.

Then we'll have a few minutes for a break before starting the candidates.

Candidates will get an initial 2 minutes to speak on anything. Then they
get one minute to respond to 1 of 2 questions (see below). After all
candidates have finished, and if there is still time depending on how many
candidates and issues representatives have attended, there will be a few
minutes for questions from the floor to any candidate. The candidate will
get 1 minute to respond to the floor questions?

City Council Questions

1. So, given that this year's approved budget amount for Non-Public
Safety staffing was almost 40% less than existed eleven years ago, and the
public's fear related to crime and safety (which is probably why the
staffing budget for police and fire increased 5.5% over the same time
frame), and that the city is facing another projected budget deficit of
$33M, or more; what departments/services will you cut.and/or what revenue
sources will you increase?

2. Knowing the frustration and fear the public goes through after the
proposed budget comes out during these recent years of deficits, what will
you do to increase real public input into the decision process. beyond just
allowing two minutes to yell at council during a budget "hearing" or council
session?

Cincinnati Public School Board Questions

1. Considering these hard economic times and tough budget choices,
what are your two top budget priority programs or initiatives?

2. What are your plans to attract more students to CPS v. outlying
areas and private schools?

Municipal Court Questions

1. With jail overcrowding and the costs of incarceration in a time
when governments have less and less money, what can you do to either deter
criminal activity or more successfully rehabilitate and avoid recidivism? 

2. Judges seem to have an overwhelming case load that exists because
society is increasingly dependent on the justice system for conflict
resolution. What can you do from the bench to help address this issue?

(Zumba is a cross between Jazzercise and Salsa dancing.  I went Saturday to Ellen Sorkin's class and it was a blast!  Ellen is a vivacious young woman (18? 19?) with a radiant, beautiful and friendly face and, best of all, (for many of us) a robust physicality.    It is so depressing to work out with a leader who has an insect body.  Ellen's expert leadership and obvious relish sweeps the class along for an exhuberant work out.  Every Saturday 12:30-1:30.  About $10 per class, less if  you buy a group of classes.

WATCH PAULETTE MEIER'S SONG "RACE TO THE BOTTOM" ON YOUTUBE;  LEAVE COMMENT (1)

Dear Friends,

Last summer some friends of mine supported me in getting a video made to go with a song I wrote about privatization of government jobs and the fall of American workers.  It's called "The Race to the Bottom."  Barbara Wolf, a well known activist documentary film- maker in Cincinnati, put the video together,  made up of photos sent in by labor photojournalists and photographers.  Some of you have seen it already.  As our campaign in Ohio heats up to repeal the bill that severely limits the rights of public workers to negotiate contracts, it occurs to me to make more efforts to get this video to "go viral."  Thus far on you-tube, there have apparently been only 45 people who have viewed the video. People have just started to leave comments about it; the first one was clearly from a Tea Party supporter.   Would love for you to view it and leave one!    Here's the link to you-tube:
