The Lloyd House Virtual Salon

For ten years, from July 2001 through July 2011, we met every week for pot luck and good talk at the Lloyd House. The Weekly newsletter (also published on this blog) grew out of the Salon. Now, we continue in cyber salon mode with the "Virtual Salon" newsletter.

SECTION ONE: TABLE NOTES

Hi Everyone!

Here's an idea ~ I will invite interesting people to come over and I'll interview them for the Virtual Salon, write it up and publish it here.  To start, the candidates for council.  Hmmmm.  Let me know if you'd like to be interviewed, or who you'd like me to interview.  I will!

Hey, join me and about 40 other people for a silly dance party with live music, this Saturday night.  Come make it a great party.  See announcement below.

Next week is Rosh Hashanah, another year already.  So it's time to reflect:  has it been a meaningful year?  a year of health?  of good living?  of contribution to our 'village'?  How do I rate myself for this year?

Just heard: my daughter in law Gretchen is coming home from the hospital today with new baby Elijah.  The bris will be Sunday.

Warm hugs to all,

Ellen

Ellen,
...  I am now the Graduate Assistant at the Taft Research Center at the University of Cincinnati, and I'm sending a "late" announcement for next Monday's Taft Center lecture on how performers and organizers "stage" the Holocaust.

The announcement pasted below gives all the specs, (and note the kosher refreshments!) but if you have any questions you can contact me at 558-7541 or Prof. Adi Gordon of UC's Judaic Studies Dept. at  gordonai@ucmail.uc.edu

I think your readers might like to know about this, and I hope you'll consider adding it to the "Virtual Salon"! And feel free to forward the announcement to anyone else you think might be interested!

Hope all is well and look forward to seeing you at Rosh Ha Shonah!

Bivracha,
Sheri Allen

Please join members of both the local and University of Cincinnati communities at the Taft Research Center to hear
Dr. Erika Hughes of the Freie Universität Berlin, a recent Fellow of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum
, at the University of Cincinnati Taft Research Center Lecture Room. She will lecture on: STAGING THE HOLOCAUST: THREE APPROACHES -- Holocaust Performances for Young Audiences in Germany, Israel and the United States.
Date: Mon. Sept. 26
Time
: 6:00 pm
Location
: The Taft Research Center, across from UC's McMicken Hall, downstairs lecture room.
Address
: 2625 Clifton Avenue, near the corner of Straight Street and the Deaconess Hospital.
Parking: Free metered public parking along Clifton Ave. after 6 pm. (If you arrive before 6, a quarter is sufficient.) A pay lot is also available right next door to the Taft Center, at the Stratford Heights parking garage.
Refreshments
: Light refreshements will be served. (Kosher dietary laws observed.)
Access
: Free and open to the public.
Specs
: Dr. Hughes's talk will include an exploration of state ceremonies, plays, an Israeli rock music show, and a Brechtian German musical. Each of these performances reflect different ideas of what the Holocaust was, who it affected, how it should be remembered, and why it should serve as a warning for the future. As people frequently turn to live performance as a means to grapple with the Holocaust, the ways in which they do so reveal much about how each nation defines itself for the next generation in the world after Auschwitz.
Speaker
: Dr. Hughes is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institut für Theaterwissenschaft & Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies Freie Universität Berlin and was the 2010-2011 Leon Milman Fellow of the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. She has published on Berthold Brecht, Weimar theater, and German and Israeli identity on the stage.
Sponsors
: This lecture is co-sponsored by the Taft Research Center; the University of Cincinnati Department of Judaic Studies; the Campus Outreach Lecture Program of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies; and the David and Judith Ganz Fund, a Donor Advised Fund of the Combined Jewish Philanthropies.

Clifton Annual STREETSCAPES Festival
Sat, Sun Sept 24, 25

Chalk drawings on Telford St., etc. etc.

The event has become a signature event celebrating Clifton, its artistic nature and its diverse business district. This year marks the ninth anniversary of the popular art fair. Returning this year are "Art Cars" in which seven residents have volunteered their cars to have a famous art reproduced on the vehicles. In addition, there will be a kids area with balloon artists, face painting and an open draw area, where kids can do their own chalk art on the street. There will also be musicians performing throughout the festival with musical styles ranging from classical to Celtic to world music, jazz and folk.

We can't wait for this weekend, when Clifton will welcome the eagerly anticipated Streetscapes chalk-painting festival on Telford, and we're proud to be hosting a Personal History Expo here at CCAC!

If it rains, we're the rain venue for Streetscapes, so we'll see you here for the amazing chalk murals. But if it doesn't rain, stroll through Telford and then head over to CCAC between noon and 4 p.m., when the Personal History Expo will help you transform a headful of memories and a trunkful of photos into an enduring legacy. This inspiring afternoon will feature personal historians and will give you a chance to participate in interactive events, watch mini oral history interviews, hear a range of presentations and browse ideas and opportunities to help you create your own personal history or preserve the story of a loved one.

Speaking of stories and storytelling, there is still time to register for Playhouse in the Park's fall classes at CCAC. The deadline is 9/26 to register, and you can choose from Creative Dramatics for K-2nd grade, or short or long-form improvisation for adults. And there's also still space in many of our fall classes, so join in the fun with Zumba, Nia, Pilates, Tai Chi or even sewing! Get the full scoop on all classes here.

There's nothing like a good story, so we hope you'll join us this weekend to celebrate your story (or the story of someone you love) and appreciate art on a GRAND scale!

Hope to see you this weekend,

Ruth E. Dickey
Executive Director, Clifton Cultural arts Center

P.S. Three huge cheers for our 2011 Golden Ticket Winners – Jennifer Purdum (Best in Show), Jackie Spang (1st place, 2D), Brenda Tarbell (1st place, 3D), Michael Agricola (2nd place, 2D), Lauri Aultman (2nd place, 3D), Andrew Au (3rd place, 2D) and Gail Webb (3rd place, 3D)! Come by to see the winners and vote for YOUR favorite through the People's Choice Award before October 22!

Dear Ellen   I am so grateful that I met you, that I felt the magic and warmth of the  Lloyd House , and that my daughter had the opportunity of a  beautiful, and spiritual moment in  this wonderful event of people and their stories and of course the Alexander Technic .  Thank you for all your inspiration and courage in creating these possibilities.    My story, with all its complications, is simply all that evolves in raising a family in a foreign culture.  Accompanying my son, who was born in France, back to the U. S.  to embrace an American Education and be able to recognize his  racines   was so important that it is now the 4th year that I have been back and will stay a bit more .     I gravitate to young children and their needs ,and as I have a Music Education degree and Masters from CCM  studying piano with Jeanne Kirstein. who you might have known,  I started once again to teach piano and have found it to be very enjoyable to teach in my native language .   If you do know of families looking for piano lessons, I would be very happy to connect with them .   I do  commute and of course can teach in French if need be.  please feel free to give my phone nos.  513 221 0229  (land ) and 513 293 0854  cell     for details      thanks again  and I will come to see you  soon   Amicalement    francine

ZUMBA® Fitness Class at the Clifton Community Arts Center (old Clifton School)  (#2)

(Zumba is a cross between Jazzercise and Salsa dancing.  I went Saturday to Ellen Sorkin's class and it was a blast!  Ellen is a vivacious young woman (18? 19?) with a radiant, beautiful and friendly face and, best of all, (for many of us) a robust physicality.    It is so depressing to work out with a leader who has an insect body.  Ellen's expert leadership and obvious relish sweeps the class along for an exhuberant work out.  Every Saturday 12:30-1:30.  About $10 per class, less if  you buy a group of classes.

The Zumba® workout program fuses Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind FUN fitness program! The goal is simple: for people to wantto work out and to enjoy every minute of it. Zumba® participants achieve long-term benefits by attending the one exciting hour of calorie-burning and body-energizing movements. The routines feature interval-training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. Zumba® classes are special in that they add Latin flavor and international zest into an ordinary dance workout class, and anyone can participate – there is no RIGHT way to do the moves. Come join the party!

Ellen Sorkin
My name is Ellen Sorkin, and I have been dancing for as long as I can remember. I began with British tap dancing when I was young, then switched to Irish dancing, and for two years was involved in a Peruvian dance troupe. I had been attending Zumba® classes for two years before deciding to become an instructor, and I became officially certified in November 2009. I love dancing, and find Zumba® particularly fulfilling because I have a blast while teaching and dancing my heart out. I live in Clifton. Stimulate the Economy by canceling STUDENT LOANS!

Below is an email from Robert Applebaum, a MoveOn member who created a petition at SignOn.org that is getting a lot of attention and may be of interest to you. If you have concerns or feedback about this petition, click here.

Dear MoveOn member,

Forgiving the student loan debt of all Americans will have an immediate stimulative effect on our economy. With the stroke of the President's pen, millions of Americans would suddenly have hundreds, or in some cases, thousands of extra dollars in their pockets each and every month to spend on ailing sectors of the economy.

As consumer spending increases, businesses will begin to hire, jobs will be created, and a new era of innovation, entrepreneurship, and prosperity will be ushered in for all. A rising tide does, in fact, lift all boats—forgiving student loan debt, rather than tax cuts for corporations, millionaires and billionaires, has a MUCH greater chance of helping to raise that tide in a MUCH shorter time-frame.

The future economic success of this country is wholly dependent upon a well-educated, prosperous middle class. Instead of saddling entire generations with debt from which there is no escape, let's empower the American people to grow this economy on their own!

That's why I created a petition on SignOn.org, calling on President Obama and Congress to support legislation seeking student loan forgiveness as a means of economic stimulus.

Will you sign the petition? Click here to add your name, and then pass it along to your friends:

http://www.moveon.org/r?r=263764&id=31019-7108549-7IAAXtx&t=2

Thanks!

Dear Ellen --

"Thank you!" to the 250 of you who sent emails and signed postcards defending the Office of Environmental Quality.

On Monday night, Mayor Mark Mallory announced he would decline to put a proposal to close the Office of Environmental Quality on council's agenda, citing "It would be ridiculous to get rid of department that's saving that kind of money."  Since its creation in 2007, the office has won $23,566,237 in grants, saves $1,036,871 per year on the city's energy bills and saved an additional $930,731in 2011 by improving the city's curbside recycling program. Five members of city council (Bortz, Ghiz, Lippert, Murray and Winburn) had proposed dismantling the office as a budget cutting measure.

Please make a contribution to keep this work going.

LETTERS

To R. Schoeff (whose testimony before Council was printed here two weeks ago)

Hi  I'm Brooke friend of Ellen's.  Tho I'm out of town I appreciated your comments on behalf of our environment.  I'm writing on a more general Oh. environmental note--& because because a friend just had a newspaper article published that I think you'd find interesting.  Your opening comments sounded like our recent conversations w/and about Ben Price--an environmental atty. who is donating his services to help us pass ordinances in Ohio to protect citizen r i g h t s  to determine what
  w e  consider to be
safe water, land air etc.
They have done this successfully in Pa. localities--so far w/o even a challenge.  It's fascinating and encouraging! And it appears to have great potential to be applied in many states.  It re-frames environmental issues into a context of 'citizen rights' which has a broader appeal--to include some conservatives' support.
I'm not terrific w/ the computer so I'll give you my friend Greg's email and he could send you more info if you'd like. Actually, I guess you'll see it w/your eddress above as I'll send him a copy so he'll be in the loop already if you choose to email him.    Thanks again,  Brooke A.
