The Lloyd House Wednesday Night Salon WEEKLY
(See at the end of this email for introductory material)

SECTION ONE: TABLE NOTES
(oops!  no photo this week.  Stay tuned though.  My new iPod Touch has a camera.)

At the Table:  Peter Bierhorst (my nephew), Dan Griffith, Paul Valerius, Elizabeth Seidner, Peter Seidner, Jackie Millay, Ellen Bierhorst,

Mr. G:  moveon.org is running experiments, how to motivate progressives.

... stories out of Afghanistan.  Apparently large areas are off limits for US military personnel because they are too dangerous.  What's the point of our  being there if this is so?   What is our government's rationale for continuing a war in which we are doing so poorly?  I know it is very complicated there... tribalism...

Peter S:  the notion of our being a "perpetual war society".

Mr. G:  doyou think the whole terrorist "threat" is overblown?...

Peter S:  I don't see why we want to be in Afghanistan at all. Shouldn't be there.

Mr. G:  there is a middle ground.  I think you ought to be in there so that we know what the threats are.

Peter S:  as much money as we are spending...   Where's the pay back?  We need money here at home.

Elizabeth:  excellent to question the war in Afghanistan.  ... the Arab Spring in the middle East. A new generation who is fed up with their dictators.  I think the new generation is going to settle their issues, though it will take a long time.

Mr. G:  if Mubarak was only a figure head for the rule of the military.
Peter B: I don't believe that; he was in control.

Elizabeth:  Who is unhappy about Arab Spring?  We are, the Israelis are...  The dictators were stable, they were our allies.  ...
... a taxi driver from Egypt said he was very happy about the revolution; they are not afraid of the military.  ...  Once the human spirit has been aroused, dictators cannot stand, the military also will be swept away.

Jackie:  the internet is powerful.  Like when the gay person was to be executed in Uganda, and that was stopped.

Elizabeth:  Mme Recamier, had the first salon.

Discussion of the Salon, 10 years old this summer.

Mr. G: is terrorism real?

Peter B:  It is obviously real...  we have certainly weakened Al Qaida in the last ten years.  They haven't been doing much for several years.  I studied up on it when they killed Bin Laden.

Mr. G:  What is appropriate action to take against terrorism?

Peter B:  the Taliban used to host the terrorists ...
Peter S:  we have a might makes right foreign policy.  that's wrong.

(discussion/argument over whether it is OK to send military might into other countries...)

Peter B:  I have faith in the character of Pres. Obama.  I believe that the humanitarian situation in Lybia weighed on him.  ...

... Are assassinations OK?
.. Strauss Kahn thing.  The IMF leader accused of raping the housekeeper in Manhattan.

Elizabeth:  different mores in europe about "sexual harassment".  Also about men staring at and flirting with women.

Northside's Fourth of July Parade is Monday, July 4, 2011, at noon and starts at the corner of Rockford and Hamilton Avenue and ends at Hoffner Park on the corner of Blue Rock and Hamilton Avenue. As in the last few years, we are focusing on being "green" by encouraging entries to walk or use bicycles at no charge and donating the proceeds from vehicle entry fees to a carbon-neutral or environmentally-focused cause.

The parade committee is looking for volunteers to help us spread the word, participate by being in the parade, post No Parking signs the day before the parade, and/or help us recycle by rolling a recycling toter along the parade route, which is very easy and fun. For more information about the parade and to enter, visit www.northsidejuly4.com/parade and click Volunteer or Be in the Parade.

Please join us on the Fourth!
