in the South. Reagan refused to respond to the HIV epidemic. We could discuss that.

Shawn in the south, if you are diagnosed with HIV you are supposed to be reported ; but a lot of the drs. Don’t comply, and people are tested anonymously. So now the news comes out; numbers are 40% higher than thought, especially among the African American community. It is unconscionable. People are bi sexual; infect their wives, children. ... Huge social pressure against gayness in Black community. I am glad I am not Black. ... The claim that condoms are not large enough, hence uncomfortable.

GAY MARRIAGE
Shawn: .... The gay marriage thing. Before, gay people didn’t care.
Bill this became an issue about 6 years ago when Hawaii almost passed gay marriage. Then the shit hit the fan.
Mr. G Gay people I know do care about marriage right because of the civil rights, health insurance, money...
Ellen: I didn’t used to care... Now I do.
Francesca In Germany gay marriage is an issue. If you are married you have huge tax advantages. In Germany gays may marry, since 2 years. Also Netherlands and Denmark.
Gary initially, many gay people didn’t care about “marriage”, but about the civil rights associated.

Brooke: the electorate has been manipulated... The gay marriage issue has been utilized. Why is it that the democrats are blind-sided by these tactics again and again?
The VP Candidate Choice
Q: if I were Barack Obama, I would want THE issue to be the economy. And all these others things are distracting. Instead there is discussion of leadership in other countries, about gay marriage... Last election Bush got the electorate to focus on the issues he wanted. The Democrats have done a bad job of choosing the battleground. Howard Dean has done a lot right...
The Republicans all are saying the best VP candidate for the Democrats would be Hillary Clinton.

I am an Italian born in Rome, but now only have German passport. I am here doing research on medieval Judaism here at HUC library. Every time there is a break at my University in Potsdam, I come here to do research. The library here discovered... A Polish Rabbi was connected with Isaac Wise here, so there is here a copy of an important book that is not available in Europe.
Recently a copy of this manuscript was sold, in part, by Sotheby’s. I asked them where they got it, and they refused.
...in Munich in 1938 they kept at the Institute of Inferior Races the manuscripts.
The manuscripts here are about 600 years old. They are about the messiah; the manuscripts were sent to Cincinnati because Rabbi Wise was studying the messiah, and his buddy in Poland sent them on loan.
This library is absolutely a miracle!

BEWARE OF JURY DUTY SWINDLE:
Jury Duty Scam
This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.
The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo; your identity was just stolen.
The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma, Illinois, and Colorado. This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

ANNOUNCING
SPAN OHIO’s 2008 WALK FOR HEALTHCARE JUSTICE
Monday September 1 to Tuesday September 23
Our friend Dave Pavlick is at it again. In 2006 he made a 600 mile walk around western Ohio, promoting the Health Care For All Ohioans Act. This year he is making a similar trek around the eastern half of the state (see Upcoming Events for itinerary). He will leave Cleveland on September 1 headed for Painesville and 22 days later, on Sept 23, he will return to Cleveland, having walked approximately 560 miles.
Dave, a single-payer activist, has been happily married to his wife, Taffy, for 30 of his 55 years and is the father of three grown children. He is a former Marine, and worked for the Sheriff’s Department for 26 years before being appointed to his current position as a servicing representative for the United Auto Workers. He is an active member of his church, Trinity Lutheran. Dave is involved in this movement, and doing this walk, because he believes it is what he can do to follow the Biblical admonition to “love your neighbor as yourself.” He is walking so that all Ohioans will have equitable healthcare—not health insurance—healthcare.
At issue is how much care a healthcare dollar can buy. Every other industrial nation provides healthcare for its citizens at a cost of approximately $3000 per person per year. In the United States we pay approximately $6,000 per person, yet 47 million in the country still are without health insurance, 1.5 million of whom are Ohioans. The reason is not hard to understand. Insurance companies receive up to 30% of the health care dollar, distributed between a wasteful bureaucracy and very great profits. In addition, every healthcare provider must have an administrative staff that can cope with the regulations and forms of hundreds of insurance companies. Together, half of the healthcare dollar is wasted.
SPAN Ohio intends to fix that in this state and, in the process, to provide an example for the remainder of the country to follow. But we need money as well as signatures to accomplish that. The insurance industry will be spending millions to convince the public that they can fix what is wrong with the system; your contributions to SPAN will be used to give the public the facts, which show that the insurance industry IS what is wrong with the system. So will you make a contribution by sponsoring Dave’s walk? Can you give $23.00, a dollar for each day of his walk? Or $46.00, to commemorate the 46 Ohioans who will die unnecessarily during Dave’s walk for lack of healthcare? Or can you sponsor any number of the 560 miles Dave will be walking? Q Benedikt sends clarification, correction re. “Yellow Cake”
Dear Ellen,
Uranium ore is mined and then needs to go through purification processes, just like many ores. The ore is "size-reduced", which is what we say in the biz instead of "crushed and pulverized". Then using a complicated series of extraction, precipitation and drying processes with acids, bases, peroxides and/or ammonium solutions the uranium is extracted and concentrated. Two of the byproducts are named by their color, "yellow cake" and "green salt". Yellowcake ranges from perhaps 70% to 90% uranium by weight and could consist of things such as U3O8, UO2 or UO3 where the "U" stands for uranium and the "O" stands for Oxygen. In its natural state this will only have 0.71% fissionable uranium. Now back to that 70% to 90% uranium by weight - the only one of those products used in nuclear power plants is UO2 and since Uranium is massive and has a weight of 235 g/mole while Oxygen has a weight of 16 g/mole, in UO2 the percent of U by weight is 88% so if the percent of U is 70% it is very impure and is worthless unless it is purified. The purification must be very good for the material to be useable which is an extremely technologically advanced process.Your usual good job with the weekly - however, you risk getting hordes of emails on the last (week’s issue) because Fernald had thousands of metric tons of depleted uranium, not yellow cake, that they couldn't give away! Oh, also it is 0.72% of the fissionable U238 not 0.072% U238 in natural uranium ore.

It has been 200 years since the abolition of the Atlantic slave trade. Maya Angelou wrote, “History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived. And if faced with
courage, need not be lived again.”
A Crime So Monstrous: Face-to-Face with Modern-Day Slavery (Free Press 2008) by E.Benjamin Skinner. Elie Wiesel said he expects Skinner’s powerful indictment of contemporary slavery to arouse outrage.
According to the author, there are more slaves in the world today than at any time in history. He tells the story of people who live in slavery, those who have escaped, and those who own or traffic in slaves – not just in Haiti, Sudan, India and Eastern Europe, but in The Netherlands and suburban USA. Working undercover, he infiltrates trafficking networks around the world. From slave quarries in India to child markets in Haiti, he opens up a parallel universe where human beings are bought, sold, used and discarded.
The Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 (TVPA) defines labor trafficking as “the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision or obtaining of a person for labor or services, through the use of force, fraud or coercion for the purpose of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage or slavery.”

Meanwhile, take note of possible trafficking around you. Don’t ignore subtle clues. Victims are often kept isolated to prevent them from getting help. Their activities are restricted, and they are typically escorted or guarded. Traffickers often blackmail them by using their status as an undocumented alien or their participation in an “illegal” industry. Women and children are overwhelmingly the ones trafficked because of their relative lack of power and social marginalization.
If you think you have come into contact with a victim of trafficking, call the National Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline: 1-888-373-7888 to help determine whether it is a situation of trafficking, and to identify local resources to protect and help victims in restoring their lives.
