TABLE ANNOUNCEMENTS

Bill: Images Against War photography show finally got an article in CityBeat.  However, it implied that the exhibition had been censored. This is not the case.  See www.imagesAgainstWar.com
It is near the Mockbee, 2159 Central Avenue.  At "Junior Gallery" Thurs 6-9, Sat 12-4.  Also, by appointment, call Bill Messer 221 3686.

Shari: the Taliban are back in action, in power in the tribal areas, and are apparently killing girls and women who go to school.

David: I am in the informal stages of looking for a Wheat Grass Business manager, full time, and a seasonal full time vegetable farmer.  Email:  woodenshoegarden@fuse.net

TOPIC:
"Stealing America Vote by Vote" by Dorothy Fadiman, DVD.
Bill's intro: when Dorothy was asked "When did you start this film?"  She said right after the  2004 election, she was so angry.  She mortgaged her house and everything to make the film.  Co-producer Mitch Block, who probably is the Mitch Block from Cinti.
Gerry: There is a cameo appearance of Marvin Kraus for 10 seconds.  Lower right hand corner getting instructions on how to prevent corruption of the vote.
Fadiman has won an Emmy, and oscar nom, and the PBS Gold Medal.
            Columbus reviews very positive.

Notes during the DVD:

This is a bi-partisan issue.
RFK jr.
Huge cadre of volunteers to register voters.  Very big turn out at the polls.  Long lines.  Shots of long lines at the polls.  People waited hours.   Blacks waited on average 3.5 hours to vote in Ohio.  White neighborhoods, 18 minutes.

WAS THIS ACCIDENTAL?

Vote flipping happened a lot, esp. in Mahoning Co.  That’s where the voter selected Kerry, but then the screen displayed Bush  having been selected.   Numerous people testifying.
Many counties in TX that recorded zero votes for Kerry.

All complaints were Kerry voters, none were Bush voters.
Flipping in 13 states.

Strange: voting machines were from multiple vendors.  This then could not have been an accident.

Overvotes.  More votes cast than there were registered voters.
In Gahana, near Cols. OH, There were only a few hundred registered votes, but thousands of votes recorded for Bush.

New Mexico: lots of lost votes, that were not recorded.
Probably Kerry would have carried New Mex.

300,000 dem. Voters were purged from Ohio roles before the election.

EXIT POLLS VS. OFFICIAL COUNT

They are the only check on the electronic voting machines… not paper trail.
Exit polls were controlled by major media.
They clearly showed Kerry carried Ohio, Iowa, Nevada, New Mex.
On media, however, after midnight, the figures flipped, favoring Bush.  i.e. the exit poll results were altered for broadcast.
There was a sudden shift in the numbers announced on TV.
Discrepancy was 6% from the recorded votes.  This is statistically incredible.  1/million.

The full data have not been made available to the public.
Kerry got 51% of exit poll votes.

US TV would not carry the story.  Tremendous resistance to any news suggesting illegitimacy of the system.
"We are afraid to tell people what will disturb them."  The media are not set up to disturb people.  Fear of angering enormous corporate owners of the media.
www.bradBlog.com
Brad Friedman

Interview with Ken Blackwell. "We have met every test."

HACKING THE COMPUTERS
Votes can be manipulated easily now with computer voting.
A hacker showed that he could change thousands and millions of votes.
Tom Feeney, Fla. Speaker of state house asked programmers to write a program to flip the votes.
Central tabulation machine could be hacked by one person and change multiple thousands of votes.

80% of vote counted by ES&S and Diebold, just two companies who make voting machines.  No bank for instance, would buy machines that would provide so little security devices.

Optical scan of paper ballots is better because you  have the paper to back it up, even though the optical scan ballots are computer read.

WHO IS WATCHING OVER VOTING?

The republicans have control over elections.
But the Democrats sat by and let it happen and did not challenge.  The Dems. Don't want to raise these issues.
Sen. Bob Hagan, Ohio State senator had his vote flipped; called the Kerry HQ; they said, "Leave the story alone."

CHANGING PERCEPTIONS

Amazing lying in this country. Controlling perceptions is the ultimate power.
May 2006, Black Box Voting broke into main media with hacking story.  Study showed that voting machines could be hacked easily.

FACING THE TRUTH

We have to face the reality of what happened.
It is hard to accept; hard to think we have lost our democracy.  If our voting is corrupted, then none of our rights are intact.  The fear and sorrow can be immobilizing.
The implications of our democracy being subverted are hugely shifting.
It is such a secret issue. There are no "tanks" rolling down Penn. Ave.
The way it was done does not provoke resistance in the public.

Seeing these facts makes you feel lonely.
You can corrupt democracy also by stealing people's votes and making them feel their votes don't count; so why bother to vote?

The loss of personal empowerment is horrible.

TAKING ACTION

In 2000, we  heard "the country needs stability; don't challenge the election."
Speak up, speak out, if necessary Screem!

WWII vet passed on to his kids a country that was a democracy.
Are we leaving our children a U.S. that is no longer democracy.

-----------------------------   DISCUSSION AFTER THE VIDEO ---------------------------

BILL: I asked the filmmaker why she left out stuff … afraid of being bumped off.
Roy: in our city lots of people's ballots get thrown out because for instance, folks vote for too many candidates.

Roy:  …act re. habeus corpus … delegates to the pres. The authority to  determine who is an "enemy combatant" and hence losing all rights. … If we convince a number of  people that the election was stolen, what is the next step?
Gerry: the people could start an initiative, like they did in New Mexico.
You can vote absentee; that way you get a paper trail.

Bill: I don't trust it. Your ballot could be thrown out on the basis of failure to "match" the signature.

Roy: two weeks ago the Hungarians went to the streets to protest stolen election…but the pres. Is still in power.

Bill: the Republicans are hoping that the poor and the black and minorities will be too dispirited to vote again.  I think that is the real strategy.  "Why bother."

Marvin:  I had an interesting experience at the poll. Many groups very active in Ohio, working to insure everybody got to vote.  I worked at Integrity Hall, owned by the Reece family.  Three separate precincts at this one polling place.  There were three diff. indep. Groups there to make sure everyone got to vote.  One was mostly Kerry people.  Another group were Republicans.  We discovered that we all had the same objective.
People were waiting long times to vote.  There were three precincts but only one line.  But none of us were allowed to go inside.
These diff. groups agreed that it had to be straightened out.  We made the suggestion that there be three lines.
This says  something good about the American people.  They all wanted to see the right thing done.

David: let's let others talk.
Also, get back to what roy     brought up about the torture compromise law.  Sherrod Brown voted for it, big disappointment.
Is anyone wondering if this was a paranoid presentation, the DVD?

(most said "no".)
I am struck with how powerful something like this  could be.  If someone wanted to make this video fraudulently, it would be easier than  to steal an election.

Bill: Friedeman is hoping that viewers will help her make it even more accurate.

Roy: 1. The media are controlled by large corps.
2. if the truth is known, will there be riots?
3. Maybe the Dems don't want to be in charge when the shit hits the fan.

Gerry: I have seen at the local level where the Dems and Republicans are in cahoots.

Mira: I went to the Cintas Center Monday AMOS Project had all those candidates for office.  Pepper, Heimlich, Wulsin, Cranley, Sherrod Brown, a rep. from Strickland on the stage.  Jim Wallace moderator, from Sojourners.
Afterwards, in the hall, there were two voting machines.  Hart machines.  They say there is a paper trail.  Said these are the kind that will be used for blind people all over the county.  If you are able bodied, you don't have a paper trail.

I just burst into tears as I watched this movie last week at Hobo Books.  I imagined myself not able to go to the polls on election day.  I always trusted it in the past.

David: aren't  some of these machines supposed to print out your ballot.
B: but we won't have those in Ohio this year.
Bill: what your receipt says, what the screen says, may not have the same data as the  tally machine has.

B: if the election polls were supervised by library personnel I could trust it.

Bill: New Mex. Shifted to scanned paper ballots.   … someone found out that every Republican Secy' of State in the US was also the chair of the president's re-election campaign.

Nicole Gunderman writes: Go see film “Iraq for Sale!”
Hi Everyone,

My friend Laura is hosting a free screening of the movie "Iraq for Sale" at the Southgate House on October 10th. Acclaimed director Robert Greenwald (Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price, Outfoxed, and Uncovered) takes you inside the lives of soldiers, truck drivers, widows and children who have been changed forever as a result of profiteering in the reconstruction of Iraq. Iraq for Sale uncovers the connections between private corporations making a killing in Iraq and the decision makers who allow them to do so.

I'll be there and I hope you can make it too! Maybe we can all cheer each other up afterwards.

Most of us fear death, but do we put this fear to good use? Does it help us or does it simply make us shut the reality of certain death out of our minds? Buddhism has always had a practical and realistic approach to death and how awareness of death can inform and improve our lives. Such awareness also helps us experience a peaceful death and assist others to do so.

Dr. Nicholas Ribush is a physician and a former Buddhist monk. A student of Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche, Dr. Ribush was a cofounder and editorial director of Wisdom Publications. He is currently Director of the Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archives (LYWA) and a member of the board of directors of the Federation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT). This Workshop is a program of the FPMT and the LYWA.

UNDERSTAND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS Study group at the Lloyd House, Saturdays at 3 pm . We have completed reading The Decline of

American Power by Wallerstein, and moving on to Alternatives to Economic
Globalization
by Cavanaugh and Mander.  I have one extra copy I can sell
you, about $10.  Join us!  Ellen, David Rosenberg, Mike Murphy, Daisy Quarm, Shari Able.

Shari writes:
I appreciated attending the study group on globalization because it tuned me into the real ramifications of current globalization policies. Before my contact with the suggested readings and study group members I thought "globalization sounds good... what could be wrong with such a spiffy concept?" Now I've become aware of the many pitfalls of globalization as it is now practiced calling to mind the old adage "don't choose a book by it's cover."

Dear Ellen
I am working on the Vote No on Issue 12 campaign on behalf of "No Jail Tax
PAC" ( Issue 12 is a sales tax increase to expand the Hamilton County Jail )
On Monday the 25th of September Mike Shyrock and I debated Phil Heimlich and
Crystal Faulkner on Waycross Community Media. (The video is on line. You can
watch it by going to our website at www.nojailtax.org )
I am sure that I do not need to make any arguments to convince you that we
have to defeat Issue 12. However to defeat Issue 12 we have to get the Vote
No on Issue 12 message to a wider audience. An inexpensive method we are
using to get the message out is to hold the "Vote No on Issue 12" banner at
busy intersections during rush hour.
On 10/2 Mike and Tonya were holding the banner at Liberty and Reading.
Channel 12 came and covered us.
At this time we have only one banner. We would like to have 5 more banners.
Each banner costs $ 68.16 to make.

I hope that you will be able to sponsor a "Vote No on Issue 12" banner by
contributing $ 70.00.

If you are unable to contribute $70.00 please give whatever amount you can.

You may do this by going to our website or by mailing a check to No Jail Tax
PAC, P.O. Box 20213, Cincinnati, OH, 45220-0213. Also, I will be glad to
come and pick up the check at a convenient location and time. You may call
me at 513-281-4441.

Suhith Wickrema

PS: I know that $70 is a lot of money for working people like us. Please
remember that if Issue 12 passes we would be paying extra taxes for the next
10 years!
Dear Suhith,
Glad to know the following.  Could not open the attachment. Yes, I DO need to know why we should vote NO on the jail tax.  All I know right now ist that Roy Euvrard said it would be far better to have a Night Court and therefore reduce the numbers of people in the jail awaiting their hearings.  Sounds right to me!  He said some huge proportion, was it 80%? Of inmates at the jail are awaiting trial.  If we had night court this would drasticaly reduce the numbers in our Ham. Co. jail.  Ellen
And suhith’s reply:

Dear Ellen,
Thanks for replying. It is not only that people are awaiting trial. 81% of
the jail beds are used by those who are in jail from the first day of
booking to first court review- they have not even seen a judge!
What do we have to do for you weekly e-mails to include a vote No on Issue
12 message?
What do we have to do to get Lloyd House Salon to endorse Vote No on Issue
12.?
Also please consider making a small contribution. This is such an important
issue. If this passes we will be paying more taxes for the next 10 years. So
think of it as an investment. (Smile)
Suhith

Cincinnati Ballet New Works Festival [Thursday-Sunday 5-8 October; Thur-Sat @ 8 PM; Sat-Sun @ 2 PM]: The new season kicks off with 4 exciting premieres in CB's incredible new performance studio, where the audience is right upon the dancers to appreciate the power & athleticism of the artists. Jim Hart, principle pianist & assistant conductor for the Ballet, will perform the Schumann Symphonic Etudes (solo piano) on stage with 4 dancer couples in Lynn Taylor-Corbett's "Lost & Found." Ms. Corbett weaves postures & gestures of grief she saw in NYC after 9/11 into abstract, emotional, poetic ballet. Says Mr. Hart, "Schumann's Symphonic Etudes is basically in theme & variations form. The theme is serious in nature, but the variations are full of romantic flights of fantasy & bravura. This is some of the most passionate, romantic, & ethereal music that the composer ever wrote." Kirk Peterson's "Javelin," a piece for 10 men, is inspired by the ancient Greek Olympics, celebrating raw physicality. With music by Michael Torke, the theme centers on the aspiration of mortals to godliness. Viktor Kabaniaev's "Ozhedanye" is a lyrical piece for 8 women. Translated as "yearning" from Russian, "Ozhedanye" is an abstract piece with familiar movement given new meaning & uncommon movement explored, with music by Christos Hatzis. Luca Veggetti's "Traces" takes inspiration from the 14th century Japanese Noh theater, exploring the relation of movement to stillness, sound to silence, with music by Toshio Hosokawa. Rabbi Arthur Waskow on Habeas Corpus, Errosion of our Constitutional Liberties

(Arthur is a great guy, a political activist who later retrained as a Jewish Renewal Rabbi under Rev Zalman Schachter-Shalomi.  Ellen)

Dear Friends,

Habeas corpus – which the English barons imposed upon King John in 1215 through Magna Carta -- the present sycophantic US Congress today handed back with a smile and a flourish.

John, often described as the worst of English kings, was reined in. The present President, certainly the worst of all American presidents, is being handed the power to define who can be tortured, and what torture is; and the courts are being debarred from stopping him.

The vote to strip out the anti-Habeas provision lost 48-51. It would have taken only 41 Senators to filibuster the bill to death – and what bill in the entire history of the Senate more deserved a filibuster?

Years from now, after more people have been tortured, the Supreme Court may follow the clear statement of the Constitution that Habeas Corpus may be suspended only during invasion or insurrection – but judging from previous votes of the present Justices, they may uphold this law by a 5-4 vote.

This law is second in despicability only to the protection explicitly given slavery in the original Constitution of the United States.  I am ashamed that to my grandchildren I am bequeathing an America so defiled.

This coming Monday, Jews who are observing Yom Kippur in traditional form will read the stories of ten great rabbis who were tortured to death by the Roman Empire. It is a cautionary tale about all Empires.

And we will read one of the greatest of all the prophetic outcries: Isaiah's delivery of God's message that refraining from food and "hanging down one's head like a bulrush" is not what God meant by the fast of Yom Kippur: rather, striking off the shackles put on by wicked power; feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, housing the homeless.

(Isaiah 57:14 to 58: 14; for my own translation see –

http://www.shalomctr.org/node/673   )

Isaiah interrupted the official liturgy of Yom Kippur to say God's impassioned words. He describes how people shouted at him, shook their fists at him, when he "interrupted" the sweet levitical hymns with God's challenge.

I hope in synagogues throughout America this Monday, rabbis and congregants will speak out, and will realize that even Isaiah's words have become tame liturgy, unless we rouse them to cry out the truth of our own time.

"Raise your voice like a shofar!" says Isaiah.

I hope that Muslims and Christians -- who also recognize that Isaiah, a prophet, spoke for God – will figure out a way in the next few weeks to introduce this outcry into their own prayers and studies, and will raise THEIR voices like the ram's horn. The ram's horn that saved Abraham's son from death: may it save our children from this deadly sin.

Here is the voice of Maher Arar, a Canadian citizen who was grabbed by the US as he returned from a business trip to Europe, on a connecting flight into LaGuardia, on his way to Canada. The United States "rendered"  him to Syria to be tortured. His words have been verified by an independent Canadian commission, which publicly criticized both the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the US government for its behavior.

With blessings for a Yom Kippur that makes a difference,
Arthur

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Says Maher Arar:

<<  I am not a terrorist. I am not a member of Al Qaeda and I do not know any one who belongs to this group. All I know about Al Qaeda is what I have seen in the media. I have never been to Afghanistan. I have never been anywhere near Afghanistan and I do not have any desire to ever go to Afghanistan.

<<  Now, let me tell you who I am.

<< I am a Syrian-born Canadian. I moved here with my parents when I was seventeen years old. I went to university and studied hard, and eventually obtained a Masters degree in telecommunications. I met my wife, Monia at McGill University. We fell in love and eventually married in 1994. I knew then that she was special, but I had no idea how special she would turn out to be.

<<If it were not for her I believe I would still be in prison.

<<We had our first child, a daughter named Barâa, in February,1997. She is six years old now. In December, 1997, we moved to Ottawa from Montreal. I took a job with a high tech firm, called The MathWorks, in Boston in 1999, and my job involved a lot of travel within the US.

<<Then in 2001 I decided to come back to Ottawa to start my own consulting company. We had our second child, Houd, in February, 2002. He is twenty months old now.

<<In September 2002, I was with my wife and children, and her family, vacationing in Tunis. I got an email from the MathWorks saying that they might need me soon to assess a potential consulting work for one of their customers. I said goodbye to my wife and family, and headed back home to prepare for work.

<<I was using my air-miles to travel, and the best flight I could get went from Tunis, to Zurich, to New York, to Montreal. My flight arrived in New York at 2:00 p.m. on September 26th 2002. I had a few hours to wait until my connecting flight to Montreal.

...
<<This is when my nightmare began.

<<Then a team of people came and told me they wanted to ask me some questions. One man was from the FBI, and another was from the New York Police Department. I was scared and did not know what was going on. I told them I wanted a lawyer. They told me I had no right to a lawyer, because I was not an American citizen.

...
<<I told them everything I knew. They asked me about my travel in the United States. I told them about my work permits, and my business there.
...
<<This interrogation continued until midnight. I was very, very worried, and asked for a lawyer again and again. They just ignored me. Then they put me in chains, on my wrists and ankles, and took me in a van to a place where many people were being held another building by the airport. They would not tell me what was happening.

<<At 1 in the morning they put me in a room with metal benches in it. I could not sleep. I was very, very scared and disoriented. The next morning they started questioning me again. They asked me about what I think about Bin Laden, Palestine, Iraq. They also asked me about the mosques I pray in, my bank accounts, my email addresses, my relatives, about everything.

<<This continued on and off for eight hours.

<<Then a man from the INS came in and told me they wanted me to volunteer to go to Syria. I said no way. I said I wanted to go home to Canada or sent back to Switzerland. He said to me "you are a special interest".

<<They asked me to sign a form. They would not let me read it, but I just signed it. I was exhausted and confused and disoriented. I had not slept or eaten since I was in the plane.

<<At about 6 in the evening they brought me some cold McDonalds meal to eat. This was the first food I had eaten since the last meal I had on the plane.

<<At about eight o'clock they put all the shackles and chains back on, and put me in a van, and drove me to a prison. I later learned this was the Metropolitan Detention Centre. They would not tell me what was happening, or where I was going.

<<They strip searched me. It was humiliating. They put me in an orange suit, and took me to a doctor, where they made me sign forms, and gave me a vaccination. I asked what it was, and they would not tell me. My arm was red for almost two weeks from that.

<<They took me to a cell. I had never seen a prison before in my life, and I was terrified. I asked again for a phone call, and a lawyer. They just ignored me. They treated me differently than the other prisoners. They would not give me a toothbrush or toothpaste, or reading material. I did get a copy of the Koran about two days later.

<<After five days, they let me make a phone call. I called Monia's mother, who was here in Ottawa, and told her I was scared they might send me to Syria, and asked her to help find me a lawyer. They would only let me talk for two minutes.

<<On the seventh or eighth day they brought me a document, saying they had decided to deport me, and I had a choice of where to be deported. I wrote that I wanted to go to Canada. It asked if I had concerns about going to Canada. I wrote no, and signed it.

<<The Canadian consul came on October 4, and I told her I was scared of being deported to Syria. She told me that would not happen. She told me that a lawyer was being arranged. I was very upset, and scared. I could barely talk.

<<The next day, a lawyer came. She told me not to sign any document unless she was present. We could only talk for 30 minutes. She said she would try to help me. That was a Saturday.

<<On Sunday night at about 9:00 p.m., the guards came to my cell and told me my lawyer was there to see me. I thought it was a strange time, and they took me into a room with seven or eight people in it. I asked where my lawyer was. They told me he had refused to come and started questioning me again. They said they wanted to know why I did not want to go back to Syria. I told them I would be tortured there.

...

<<They asked me to sign a document and I refused. I told them they could not send me to Syria I would be tortured. I asked again for a lawyer.

<<At three in the morning they took me back to my cell.

<<At 3 in the morning on Tuesday, October 8th, a prison guard woke me up and told me I was leaving. They took me to another room and stripped and searched me again. Then they again chained and shackled me. Then two officials took me inside a room and read me what they said was a decision by the INS Director.

<<They told me that based on classified information that they could not reveal to me, I would be deported to Syria. I said again that I would be tortured there. Then they read part of the document where it explained that INS was not the body that deals with Geneva Convention regarding torture.

<<Then they took me outside into a car and drove me to an airport in New Jersey. Then they put me on a small private jet. I was the only person on the plane with them. I was still chained and shackled. We flew first to Washington. A new team of people got on the plane and the others left. I overheard them talking on the phone, saying that Syria was refusing to take me directly, but Jordan would take me.

<<Then we flew to Portland, to Rome, and then to Amman, Jordan. All the time I was on the plane I was thinking how to avoid being tortured. I was very scared. We landed in Amman at 3 in the morning local time on October 9th.

<<They took me out of plane and there were six or seven Jordanian men waiting for us. They blindfolded and chained me, and put me in a van.

<<They made me bend my head down in the back seat. Then, these men started beating me. Every time I tried to talk they beat me. For the first few minutes it was very intense.

<<Thirty minutes later we arrived at a building where they took off my blindfold and asked routine questions, before taking me to a cell. It was around 4:30 in the morning on October 9. Later that day, they took my fingerprints, and blindfolded me and put me in a van. I asked where I was going, and they told me I was going back to Montreal.

<<About forty-five minutes later, I was put into a different car. These men started beating me again. They made me keep my head down, and it was very uncomfortable, but every time I moved, they beat me again. Over an hour later we arrived at what I think was the border with Syria. I was put in another car and we drove for another three hours.

<<I was taken into a building, where some guards went through my bags and took some chocolates I bought in Zurich. I asked one of the people where I was and he told me I was in the Palestine branch of the Syrian military intelligence. It was now about 6 in the evening on October 9.

<<Three men came and took me into a room. I was very, very scared. They put me on a chair, and one of the men started asking me questions. I later learned this man was a colonel. He asked me about my brothers, and why we had left Syria. I answered all the questions.

<<If I did not answer quickly enough, he would point to a metal chair in the corner and ask "Do you want me to use this?" I did not know then what that chair was for. I learned later it was used to torture people.

<<I asked him what he wanted to hear. I was terrified, and I did not want to be tortured. I would say anything to avoid torture. This lasted for four hours. There was no violence, only threats this day. At about 1 in the morning, the guards came to take me to my cell downstairs.

<<We went into the basement, and they opened a door, and I looked in. I could not believe what I saw. I asked how long I would be kept in this place. He did not answer, but put me in and closed the door. It was like a grave. It had no light. It was three feet wide. It was six feet deep.

<<It was seven feet high. It had a metal door, with a small opening in the door, which did not let in light because there was a piece of metal on the outside for sliding things into the cell.

<<There was a small opening in the ceiling, about one foot by two feet with iron bars. Over that was another ceiling, so only a little light came through this. There were cats and rats up there, and from time to time the cats peed through the opening into the cell. There were two blankets, two dishes and two bottles. One bottle was for water and the other one was used for urinating during the night. Nothing else. No light.

<<I spent ten months, and ten days inside that grave.

<<The next day I was taken upstairs again. The beating started that day and was very intense for a week, and then less intense for another week. That second and the third days were the worst. I could hear other prisoners being tortured, and screaming and screaming. Interrogations are carried out in different rooms.

<<One tactic they use is to question prisoners for two hours, and then put them in a waiting room, so they can hear the others screaming, and then bring them back to continue the interrogation.

<<The cable is a black electrical cable, about two inches thick. They hit me with it everywhere on my body. They mostly aimed for my palms, but sometimes missed and hit my wrists they were sore and red for three weeks. They also struck me on my hips, and lower back. Interrogators constantly threatened me with the metal chair, tire and electric shocks.

<<They used the cable on the second and third day, and after that mostly beat me with their hands, hitting me in the stomach and on the back of my neck, and slapping me on the face. Where they hit me with the cables, my skin turned blue for two or three weeks, but there was no bleeding. At the end of the day they told me tomorrow would be worse. So I could not sleep.

<<Then on the third day, the interrogation lasted about eighteen hours.

<<They beat me from time to time and make me wait in the waiting room for one to two hours before resuming the interrogation. While in the waiting room I heard a lot of people screaming. They wanted me to say I went to Afghanistan. This was a surprise to me. They had not asked about this in the United States.

<<They kept beating me so I had to falsely confess and told them I did go to Afghanistan. I was ready to confess to anything if it would stop the torture. They wanted me to say I went to a training camp. I was so scared I urinated on myself twice.

Steve Sunderland: Children dying; but Children  working for peace in Pleasant Ridge.
Dear Friends:

The past week has been an
amazing one of terror and hope for children. It is impossible to assess the damage caused by the killing of a young child in Colorado, the massacre of 5-9 young girls in Pennsylvania, and the terrorizing of young high school students in Washington at the hands of a of a abruptly retired Congressman. It has also been a week that the media ignored the Nativity Elementary Schools' "Friendship Project: One week to Change the World."

My world has changed reading of the brutal killings and molestation of very young girls and boys. In schools and in the halls of Congress. Devastating. Is peace possible when such actions fill our minds with pictures of horror and pierce our hearts with unstoppable pain? We are reading something from the Brothers Grimm. A page out of the Holocaust.  A form of American terrorism that forces the catching of my breath.

Over time the details of all of these experiences will be filled in and still we will wonder about why children, why a principal, and why young people had to die and face torture? I have no simple answer. Or pithy summary that ties these acts of violence together in a neat theory. And, I am sure that someone will rightly write me that thousands of children are dying in Iraq and Afghanistan, too, and that they are not known or mentioned. Even our dead young men and women soldiers return in caskets that do not make the newspapers or evening television news. Yet, these American deaths are both special and part of the world carnage of the innocents. Millions of children die everyday from hunger, thirst, and diarrhea throughout our global community. Unheralded. Invisible to most of the "developed" world. Millions of children are forced into slavery, put to work to make sneakers, sex, or some commodity. Unless the National Geographic is doing a special issue, we rarely hear about their plight.

The children shot were rushed to hospitals too late. They died after cruel experiences of being molested, tied up, and facing a blackboard. How many children today are being turned away from hospitals because they do not have health insurance? The polite and insulting rejection of sick children deeply affects their and our souls. A darkness falls over these children, lit all too often with anger. Who cares about those children who cannot get to see a school counselor or a teacher with special skills because "There are just too many of those children." These children are having their hands tied behind their heads and told to die, too.
And what must it be like to be the child of Hispanic origin, or a Muslim child for the past few years. The mobs of Americans screaming "criminals," "law breakers," and "terrorists?" What can their families say to them that will relieve the stress of hatred? What can teachers do when other children shun and reject these children? Who stands with the Brown children and reminds them of their beauty, their talent, and their welcome place in our country?

At the heart level, something horrible is growing in our society and our world. It is not new. Children have been killed for a long time and in every place in the world. But now it seems that the feeling of horror is missing too much of the time.  On a weekly basis I sit and draw with children at a community center and hear their stories about mothers who hate them. Or, teachers who do not care. Drawing with children often revives them, brings out of them a wonderful sense of color, a bright reminder that they are alive and can control the shape and texture of a line. For our one moment. Then, when we stop, or the second before, a curtain falls across their eyes. "It is time to stop being a child," I almost hear them say. "It is time to go back to the war." We pack our paper and markers, saving the pictures for a showing at some future point to the parents or grandparents who are still keeping faith with these little ones, and return to their dangerous world.

I want to suggest that both the children in the war and the children working for peace are largely ignored by our media. Why are we not celebrating those children actively engaged in reducing hunger in their communities by holding fasts, overnight Shantytowns, and cans of food collected for the starving? Why are we not applauding like crazy for those college students who have not abandoned the people of Darfur? It is the young people who will get this killing stopped by putting themselves into the pressure cooker of politics to demand a cease fire. It is happening now. All across the world children are meeting with the Nobel Prize winners for peace and developing programs that make a difference in their communities. They are not a part of our attention. Children are going to nursing homes to be with elderly, going to hospitals to be with the sick and dying, going to those places where the homeless come in for a warm night and one hot meal and talking, playing cards, singing or playing the piano and making "strangers" a part of their community of compassion.

The most amazing recent program happened last week at Nativity Elementary School in Cincinnati, Ohio. I sat in welcoming ceremonies of this old Catholic school as delegations of children from Russia, Hungry, Netherlands and Germany marched in for the beginning of week of peace work. Bob Herring, principal, explained: "This is going to be a week to change the world through friendship." What a stunning idea. In a world marked by child killers, this school and children from Europe were going to create "friendship." "How could this change the world?," I wondered. "These are children, young school children who may or may not know English...", I said to myself as the doubts raced to my consciousness.

The children of Nativity formed a flag waving community. As each team walked into the gym, to the sounds of a little band of faculty and students, the children of Nativity raised little flags they had made of each country and waved them with an almost violent swinging of their hands. On the stage, a group of children sat with colored flash cards, changing to the country's colors as the team marched by the stage. In the 90 minute welcome we heard how that this was a week of creating peace through class discussions, art projects, in home guests, and visiting some of the sites of Cincinnati. When the session closed, I stood, applauding, with all of the adults who were packing the gym. Bob came over and asked how it struck me. He didn't notice or care that I was crying so hard, crying tears of such exquisite joy that I could not say a word without spitting and sneezing my tears. We hugged and I mumbled, "Later, later I will be able to talk."

I visited on Wednesday to do posters with the teams around the theme of "what brings friendship to people during their stay at Nativity?" Each team of children plunged into creating a drawing. There was great discussion and lots of sharing of markers and pencils. After about 15 minutes, I asked the children to stop and share what they had drawn. And, to explain what their pictures meant. "We need more time!," most every team boomed back at me. Another ten minutes seemed enough.
Slowly, each artist rose and  described the meaning of the colors, lines, and words that filled their pictures. Great laughter immediately followed the first explanations as everyone felt that art criticism was important to express. Soon, though, the mood changed and the art and the explanations were being heard, recognized, and respected. Somehow, some person had made a work of beauty and explained it through a kind of English that was understandable and moving. We all began to see the ways in which friendship was infecting this community, a beautiful "sickness" spreading throughout the teams.  I collected the pictures, took photos with some of the children, and brought the pictures to Bob Herring's office. Again, my tears were coming from some deep area, the place where beauty, joy and friendship combine and force some reaction in me that skips over words. Bob understood and took the pictures.

Thursday night I returned for the presentation of "cultural expressions" of friendship. Each team had prepared a dance or skit to communicate about their country and culture. We saw marvelous dancing from Hungary, Russia, and The Netherlands, the latter with wooden shoes. The German team did a humorous play about two mice that defies my ability to summarize. Again, the gym was packed with the school's children, parents, alumni, and friends of this project. One highlight of the evening was the giving of the wooden shoes as gifts to the parents that were hosting the Dutch children. Another amazing event was the sharing of the sculpture of the bird of peace that was created in the week by a team of children from all the countries. A slide show of the mural that was created on a local wall was also shown to the expected "ooohs and ahaas." A website was also created and shared in a power point presentation.

Friday, the closing ceremony returned to the theme of "one week to change the world." Bob gave a short speech suggesting that each child had the responsibility of building friendship and carrying on the work of peace at the next conference. "You will change the world of the future," Bob said in his quiet and tired voice.  Finally, the home made flags of the children of Nativity waved as each team, now reunited as a country team, walked out of the conference, holding their country's flags.

It seems crazy to write: "No one died at Nativity last week. No one was tortured, enslaved, or humiliated." Children, working in and for peace created a different world, a small and delicate world that did not seem fragile until we reflected on what was happening in the rest of our county and world. Yet, I want to celebrate what this little school did and is doing to plant seeds of peace. There is no question that such an ambitious program could not have taken place without teachers, parents, staff and community support. There is no doubt that children, seeing five countries respected, engaging with the children of five countries in leadership positions, joining the children working on creating their meanings of peace, meant a lot to their world. Sadly, few news media were there to see the sparkle and dazzling dances and art work. Or, equally important, to feel the ways in which peace can develop across languages that are different and cultures that have overlapping and different values. Somewhere around the school was a future politician of the United States or Russia, or Germany or Hungry or the Netherlands, who had learned about peace and would keep the secret of how it was created for the rest of their lives. Perhaps this experience will form the basis for a global community that respects all children. Somewhere in this group are a group of future teachers who learned how to be unafraid of working in teams, creating art and music that brought peace out in delightful ways. They will be teachers that love children and love peace, too. Throughout this schools and the four other schools there are citizens who are more than citizens of their own countries. We learned a new form of citizenship, a way of linking responsibility and creativity to a new appreciation of the international law of children: "Children of the world deserve peace, love, food, shelter, and health. We, citizens of the present and the future, will keep this idea growing."  I know I cry for the children of Colorado and Pennsylvania who may never believe in such a world. And, I cry for these children who were here in this same week because I saw their joy in peace.

In peace,

Steve

The Attacks of 9/11: Why The Official Story Cannot Be True, and Why It Matters to this Sangha

Introduction

In the 5 years since the September 11, 2001, some
researchers have been discovering and presenting evidence
that contradicts the official account of what happened and
who was responsible for the attacks that day. Given the
role that 9/11 has played as the rationale for a global "war
on terror," the suspension of major principles of
international law, and the curtailment of civil liberties --
a discovery that the official narrative about 9/11 was a lie
would be of paramount importance.

I believe that this alternative information about 9/11 has
great validity an d might provide the key to preserving a
true constitutional democracy in the United States.

Looking at this material is psychologically and spiritually
difficult. If I might offer several suggestions. Like
with a dharma talk or satsang: Stay in your body. Listen
for truth with your intuition. When you feel confusion,
just feel confusion. When fear arises, feel and notice the
fear. When ones world view is assailed, cognitive
dissonance and stress feelings are produced. To come to
grips with this information you have to get through these
uncomfortable feeling states without closing down. This can
take time.

I will briefly present, what to me were, the two most
compelling arguments that the official account cannot
possibly be true, then point interested people toward high
quality information resources.

1. Failure of the US Air Defenses to intercept any
hijacked airliners.

On the morning of 9/11/01, 4 airliners were hijacked and
wandered around in American airspace for without a response
from the Air Force. From the time that the first aircraft
was known to be hijacked until all were crashed was 1 hour
and 20 minutes. If standard operating procedures had been
followed, at least some of the aircraft should have been
intercepted by the military. A stand-down order must have
been in effect that morning.

As a former pilot, I know that commercial aircraft fly
specific "routes" through the sky and that that route is
described in detail in a "flight plan" filed before the
plane takes off. Deviation from that flight plan produces
an immediate inquiry from the air traffic controller who is
in constant radio contact with the pilots.

A good friend of mine is a 20 year veteran air traffic
controller at San Francisco International Airport (though he
has not worked at an Air Route Traffic Control Center
(ARTCC)). He explains that if an aircraft deviates from its
flight plan and radio and transponder signal are lost, the
controller will call his supervisor over (< 1 minute).
Initially, they assume that the airplane may be having
mechanical trouble and give it 2 to 3 minutes to resume
radio contact. Within 5 minutes of loss of contact with a
flight plan departure, an emergency is assumed to exist and
the military liaison officer, stationed at every ARTCC
center, calls NORAD (the military).

NORAD responds to the report of an out-of-contact /
off-course airliner by immediately scrambling a pair of
fighters from the closest air field which are vectored to
intercept the airliner. This is standard procedure and is
managed by protocol. They do not talk about the problem for
a while, wonder what they should be doing, discuss and
evaluate the situation on the phone, consult with
supervisors, notify the president, or call the Pentagon for
permission to launch fighters. This happens 75 - 100 times
every year nationwide. The response decision is analogous
to calling the fire department and reporting a fire in your
kitchen. They dispatch a fire engine immediately. They do
not ask you questions about the size of the fire or ask if
you have tried a fire extinguisher or try to get a feel for
how bad the situation really is prior to deciding to
dispatch an engine. It is automatic. You say you have a
fire, they dispatch an engine.

Fighters on alert "go from scramble to 29,000 feet" in 2 -
1/2 minutes. Using after-burners, fighters can travel at
1600 - 1800 mph. Interception typically takes about 15
minutes any where in the USA, but is more typically 5 to 8
minutes around Washington DC.

If FAA and NORADs standard operating procedures had been
followed on the morning of 9/11/01, several of the aircraft
should have been intercepted. This clearly did not happen.
Someone must have issued a stand-down order (or otherwise
interfered with the ability of the military to respond
normally).

2. It is obvious to me that the World Trade Center Towers
and Building 7 were blown-up.

As background, please watch a couple of videos clips of
buildings being destroyed by implosion demolitions at:
http://www.implosionworld.com/cinema.htm (These are really
cool!) Notice the instantaneous onset, the sounds and
flashes of series of explosions preceding the onset of
movement, the vertical direction of fall (they dont tip
over), the rate of collapse at free fall speed, and the
production of huge waves of dust clouds from the base of the
building.

World Trade Center Building 7 was 47 story skyscraper,
located 350 feet from the North Tower, which "collapsed" at
5:30 pm on 9/11/01. Building 7 was not hit by an airplane
and did not have any jet fuel spilled into it. Its collapse
is almost never shown on TV and most Americans do not even
know about the fall of this third skyscraper. No
government investigative agency has ever even attempted to
offer any explanation as to how it might have come down. As
you watch the videos, you will see whythere is no way to
hide it, the destruction of Building 7 was a classic
implosion-type controlled demolition.

Please watch the 3 video clips of WTC7 at:
http://www.wtc7.net/videos.html

In this traditional "implosion" type of demolition, the
primary explosives are placed in the basement of the
building, and the central support columns are blown about 1
second before the perimeter columns. See how the penthouse
in the center of the roof starts to fall just before the
edges of the building. The building falls exactly
vertically downward at free-fall speed. The rubble lands
within the footprint of the building. The buildings next to
it show minimal damage. There is absolutely no explanation
for this event except for a pre-planned controlled
demolition that was executed flawlessly.

Now lets look at the North and South Towers. The official
story of why the towers collapsed is that jet fuel fires
within the buildings warmed the steel to the point where it
softened, bent or sagged, until "something broke," and
everything domino-ed down after that due to gravity. (The
"something" that broke is different in the different
collapse theories and how everything domino-ed down is never
explained adequately by any theory.) But the buildings
supposedly FELL DUE TO GRAVITY.

Now lets watch the videos of the "collapse" of the North and
South Towers. These are "top-down" demolitions. (This kind
of demolition is not used commercially due to the huge
production of flying debris and toxic dust. It does
produce wonderful shock-and-awe effects on the psychology of
the people watching, however. You may notice an urge to
increase the military budget by a few billion dollars when
you see these videos! J )

http://www.plaguepuppy.net/public_html/collapse%20update/
and, http://thewebfairy.com/911/demolition/controlled.htm

Notice that the towers are blown-up. To me this is
completely obvious: They do not sag, break, then fall by
gravity alone. Specifically notice:

1. The instantaneous onset of "collapse." They are
perfectly motionless, then they fall like a rock.

2. Vertical fall. They do not tip over to one side. This
indicates that ALL of the vertical support columns failed at
EXACTLY the same time. Diagrams of the debris pile show a
pattern of radial symmetry around the building's base. This
is inconceivable for a building failing due to natural
causes, but is expected when a building is skillfully
blown-up by pre-positioned explosives.

3. Steel beams and debris are ejected horizontally from the
upper sections of the building at 100 feet per second. This
is NOT expected from a building that is falling due to
gravity alone. What produced the force that blasted
material horizontally?

4. The pulverization of a hundred thousand tons of concrete
into very fine dust. (Each of the 110 floors had a 4 inch
thick slab concrete floor. (900 tons of concrete per floor.)
Yet, in the rubble, there was minimal concrete found.)
Recall that concrete that FALLS to the ground falls in
relatively intact large pieces and then breaks into small
chunks as it hits the ground. But, in the twin towers, the
concrete is pulverized into very fine dust HIGH IN THE AIR
and is drawn downwardly, then outwardly, as dust, on air
currents. The dust rained down over the streets of
Manhattan in a layer several inches thick. The city looked
like it had been snowed on. This pulverization indicates
massive explosive energies.

5. The building falls at free fall speed. A brick dropped
from the top of the 1360 foot tower would fall to the ground
in 9 seconds. The towers fall to the ground in 9 seconds.
This is only possible if ALL aspects of the steel skeleton
of the building are shattered artificially. This
characteristic alone positively establishes the tower
collapses as controlled demolition.

6. Hundreds of witnesses report hearing explosions, being
knocked off of their feet by explosions and seeing series of
flashes called "demolition rings" typical of planned
demolitions. Excellent video at
http://www.911revisited.com/video.html . The video 9/11
Eyewitness has an audio track--listeners hear loud, deep,
gut rattling explosions BEFORE the building begins its fall.
To me personally, this is profoundly convincing. I have no
doubt that the buildings were blown-up.

A demolition team requires several months of preparation
time to perform a skillful controlled demolitionand the WTC
demolitions were very skillfully done. They need access to
the building, blue-prints, and time to lay the cables and
program the computer that controls the firing sequence. WTC
complex security was contracted to a company named
Securacom. Marvin Bush, the presidents brother, was a
director in this company, and Wirt Walker, III, the
president cousin, was the CEO. Securicom ran numerous
drills, shut down power and installed equipment upgrades in
the months just before 9/11 giving large numbers of unknown
engineers free access to the building.

Why This Matters

Though George W. Bush does not appear intelligent
individually, his administration has produced surprisingly
effective, coordinated and rapid shifts in the character of
our national government. The pursuit of these changes has
been organized, bold, effective and very frightening.
Especially disturbing are the open embrace of torture as a
tool of state, holding persons in secret prisons, loosening
the rules for search and seizure, the widespread use of
secrecy, silencing dissent and the concentration of power in
a single (executive) branch of government. This
constellation is very suggestive of Germany in the 1930s.

We are told that the attacks of 9/11 necessitate these
changes. In our fear and confusion we ignore the voice of
compassion in our hearts that calls out "This is not right".

There is a great deal of information indicating that
elements at the highest levels our own military and
intelligence communities permitted, and even authored, these
attacks. To me the information is solidly convincing. But
each person must decide for themselves.

For me, the clarity of this realization has emerged after
many months of reading, study, anguishing and some crying.
I personally believe that the war on terror is a fraud. The
criminals that organized and directed the 9/11 assault were
Christian Anglo-Saxons, and they live and work openly in the
United States.
