Friday 5 August, 2005

At the table Monday 1 August, 2005: Steve Sunderland, David Rosenberg, Roy Euvrard, Mike Murphy, Judy Cirillo, Mira Rodwan, Adrienne Cooper, Vic Wulsin, (Welcome Vic!) Andrew Louw, (Welcome Andrew!) Pam Futurer, (Welcome Pam!) Karen Arnett, Lawson Wulsin, (Welcome Lawson!), Dan Hershey, Merril Frazier, Ellen Bierhorst, Gary Weiss, Daisy Quarm
...
Writing Friday 5 August:  We had
a rollicking good time on Monday.  Thank you Vic, Lawson, and Andrew for coming to talk with us.  Come back often.  Also Pam.  Merril, it was great to see you again.  Hope you will resume as a regular.
I am getting away this weekend, so will make an abreviated Weekly.  Below, notes I took at the table with my (Julie Murray"s) laptop Mac.  I love it!  I am finding that having the laptop is opening my gates of creativity and I am again working daily on my book about the Salon, and my other book about family history.  Hooray!

   At the table:
...Judy C. leaving Friday for Israel for a Women in Black Conference.  Agenda looks like it will be overwhelmingly pro Palestinian.  Will be there 12 days (conf. is 5 days).

Steve Su: Annual 911 program, march and vigil starting Sept 10 at the Clifton Ave. Mosque.

David Rosenberg: I_d like some company to go see James Taylor Friday a week 8/12.  Riverbend. woodenshoegarden@fuse.net

Roy Euvrard: today my daughter reported to Ft. Campbell KY to join 101 Airborne Division.  Has three kids.  Family Practice.

Mike Murphy: in Sept, 23-25 Peak Oil Conference in Yellow Springs.  Ellen and I went last year.  Rent a whole house?
I believe mobilizations, marches on Washington etc. are worthless unless there is a concrete program.

Dan Hershey: comment on the Washington gathering.  As I have been saying, the war is over and it is just how fast we can get out.  .... In France there is a big show on erotic art.  Admission will be free for anyone naked.

Vic Wulsin.
Steve: just back from National Board of NCCJ ... they are in the process of disintegration.  What is happening to liberal America?  If NCCJ can_t make it, after a hundred years... this is a major issue.
Also, I was at a conf. of Progressive Social Workers and learned about organization: Poor People_s Economic Human Rights Campaign.  They are doing tribunals on the treatment of poor people, and sending reports to the U.S.  Claim that there is a violation of UN human rights here in USA.  What is happening here in Cinti? With the poor?  Free Store?  OTR?

Vic: isn_t the NCCJ apt to attract more educated, rich people than poor?
Steve:  yes.  In fact the NURFC was suggested by a NCCJ man from Cinti.  ... Mismanaged funds.

Robt Harris is a program officer at NCCJ.  Chip Harrod is the national leader, lives in Cinti.

Vic Wulsin: I have a diverse background.  Why I ran?  What was it like?  Where I_m going?
I am a public health doctor, worked there at health dept from 89 to 95.  Under Stan Broadnax who was sent to jail.  Malcolm Adcock was appointed after.  He died in Dec.
Organization, Soteni, named after the Swahili expression ³All of us, together² ,  whose purposed is to use the health lessons from here in Africa, Asia, Latin Amer., and vice versa.  At USAID the flow is very one way.  Economic imperialism.  Corporate, yes.  I went to Kenya.
Purpose of Soteni is to prevent HIV AIDS.  We know it is preventable.  Just don_t know how.  Condoms, education, economic empowerment of women...
In the Af. Amer. community bisexual men tend to be silent and secretive of their gay participation.  Af Amer women are getting AIDS from af amer men who are bisexual and get it from gay men.
Moved here 19 years ago with Lawson who was born, raised here.  Chose to live Indian Hill because my in-laws lived near by.  Explains some of my ambivalence about Cinti.
Have worked abroad: Africa, Asia, Latin Amer.  Commuted four years to Washington, and to direct projects abroad.
My project ended in Washington.  Wanted to focus here in Cinti.
 We have four sons, 18-26.

When I head about Rob Portman_s appointment I got interested in running.  Pat DeWine a weak candidate.  I enjoyed campaigning.  I cared a lot about TWO ISSUES    :
Multi national intervention in Iraq.  The war.
Health: people who have been in public health can help make policy.  ... Birth control; I believe in health of women, families, society and all of that requires the freedom to choose.  I thought my credibility would help re. abortion issue.  Women bleed to death through self induced abortion.

It was tough to run against fellow democrats.  Paul is very cool.    Tim Burke, Dave Altman were supportive of me in the beginning, but ultimately withdrew support.  I disagreed with Hackett on how to make guns safe and also the health issues.  Also on the war.  I felt he toed the Bush line..._We are there...get the job done._ I think there is another way.  So I stayed in the race.  Godmother of my son, a Republican from Clermont Co., said _Prexcription drugs and Social Security would get me to vote Democrat._

We did a lot of telephone work.  As we went on we got more and more people saying _I will vote for Victoria Wulsin_.  We were getting up to 50%.  I hoped for the Enquirer endorsement.  I felt I outspoke Paul on issue after issue.  They didn_t.

Tuesday night by 9 pm it was obvious that Paul had it.  I called him and conceded.
Now that I lost, the Dems. are really supportive of me.  Very friendly now.

Silver lining.  Dave Altman, lawyer, environmental issues, the Democratic Forum, functions a lot at the state level.  Ohio Environmental Council.  He called and wanted to take me to lunch.  Is not an officer in the county party, but is a major player.  Asked me to apply for health commissioner.  So then I began thinking about it.  Knew I was a pro environment activist from the scientific side.  So I applied.  Applications close Aug. 5.

Roy: Grant writing is a big part of the job.
Vic: I spent years at Children_s hospital writing grants.

Vic: I was at NIOSH in the branch that conducted epidemiologic studies (between hazard evaluations¹ division and surveillance division).  We were the only group that had right of entry.  We could get into any plant.  So I looked at Male reproductive health consequences.  Sperm counts have dropped.  Much male factor infertility now.  One theory is too many estrogens from beef.  Also in the environment now.
Radiation.
Pneumonia.
Vinyl Chloride.

Daisy: What do you think are the major public health issues?
Vic:  Certainly reproductive health; infant mortality, STDs.  There is much we can do: sex ed. works.  It does not reduce sex behavior but does reduce rates of disease.  Study after study.
Infant mortality rate here is at rate of Russia.  Way above what it should be for our economy.
Issue of health disparity.  Poor people have so much worse exposures to toxins, etc.

Want to address social health issues.
Think health dept can reduce racism.  Theoretically, the playing field should be level, is from birth.  But people of color are at a disadvantage.  Even controlling for economic level.  The prevailing theory is the stress factor that comes from racism.

Merril: You have to take every stimulus twice.  Majority screen and also Black screen.  Takes enormou8s effort.  Organized schizophrenia.

Vic: I would like to study this, figure out the causes.  Or, look at care, jobs, school in black community.
Another favorite: HIV AIDS.  Another group needing intervention: GRADE SCHOOL BOYS.    Don_t have the physical outlets they need.  Prevalence of ADHD.  Over- diagnosing.  Then there is medication.  If those boys could be in school half a day, outside half a day, maybe that¹s how kids best learn.

Mira: drugs, crime.
Vic: I would like to know more about what has happened.  Epidemics.  Drug trade.  ... Fight for needle exchange.  Give away clean needles.
Dan:  do you see a sig part of the city malnourished?

Vic: definitely.  Coke and a cup cake for breakfast are not good for ADD.
Dan: one proposal for the world problems... to have available a daily vitamin pill for every child.  Trick is to get them to take

Vic: Obesity is a big problem.
Dan: obesity can be along with poor nutrition.
Vic: I_d love to have technical advisor groups.  Help formulate policy.  Likewise violence.  Crimewatch.  Town councils, neighborhood councils.

Mike: not sure we know what health is.  i.e. ADD kids, _at least they will be able to get some schooling._  but maybe schooling is not good.  A lot of bullshit handed out in schools.  ... John Holt, Dennis Litky, have other ideas.  Gatto.  Fine results working with kids_ interests.
I worked in the public health system.  Seemed like we were just a first aid station.  No concept of prevention, of health.  It was a battlefield.  Disgusting.

Roy: Stan Broadnax.  He used cocaine.  They paid an informer $28,000 to get him.  _Where can I buy cocaine?_  finally gave him the name.  Stan was working on the Workhouse.

Roy:  Dem. Party.  I am a Libertarian.  Fir the first time in ‘04 I saw a diff. between Rep and Dem so I got involved in Dem Party.  They all say _energize the base!_  Unions, Af Amer, Southern Dems, and some intellectuals, unmarried women.  That_s the only group (women) that are growing.  Other sub groups are shrinking.
There are many Republicans out there who are sick to death of the Republican agenda.  My plan is to send out a brochure, appealing to republicans:  balanced budget, constitution, separation of powers, separation of church and state...
In the ‘04 campaign John Eisenhower and Ron Reagan both came out for Kerry because Bush wasn_t a real Republican.

Dan: the modern word is _framing_.  In the last couple of days they started calling Hackett a _liberal_ Democrat.  But Hackett has not done the same thing to Schmidt.  The Republicans are going to lock in Hacket as a liberal.

Roy: it was Nixon_s southern strategy that got Bush in the White House.

David: it would help to have the Dems. to have a vision?

David: Public health.  My father in intensive care.  A miracle he_s alive.  High tech machines etc.  My father has now become a million dollar man in just ten days in intensive care.  I am grateful he_s alive, but what could a million dollars do for a thousand poor people in Cinti?  Are we in a public health situation where there are limited resources...   Or is there going to be a way of justifying all this tech. used for the popl at large.

Vic:
when I hear about your father consuming a million dollars of care in ten days.  ... in the military it is easy to see the solution.  We could keep many alive for the budget we are spending on the war.  We should address this more rationally than we do

David:  high quality health care makes money, an argument I hear.  Need to get out of the scarcity mentality...j

Vic: and the band aid approach.

Dan:  nutrition again.  Many diseases were caused by zinc deficiency in history.  We got zinc in past through pots, cooking pots.  Maybe one third of the US pop are deficient in zinc.  Issues re. growth, healing, etc.  It is a simple thing to make available a pill to the population generally.  Why not say We will work to have available to every child a multiple vitamin every day.

Vic: yes.  You could do it at school.

Mike: drugs are not just a small problem; a major international problem.  Crossing the Rubicon by Michael Ruppert.  ... the oil exploration in places are funded by drug money.

Catherine Austin Fitts, makes point about drug.  Addictive culture.  Alcohol, drugs, oil, constant stim.  Fantasy culture.  We are in denial of what our CIA does over seas.  Murders heads of state.  I have been reading a bout this for forty years.  You have traveled; you must see some of this.  We don_t really relate to the rest of the world; we force our way on them.  A surreal quality.

Ellen:  Solari.org   tapeworm economics.   Drug trade.  Prison industry.

Andrew:  discussion tonight communal and national.  Moving to world.  US takes a defensive stance in the world.  Military affairs... selfishness.  Security.  Do you feel that money should be spent on defense? Or on poverty, foreign aid to developing countries.  We are destroying our natural resources.  ...eliminate the need for war.  The US is ignorant ...shutting itself off from the rest of the world.

Vic:  I believe in debt relief.  Jeff Sachs, economist, friend of U 2 lead Bono.  A rock n roll millionaire who cares about Africa, poverty, debt relief.  Interest on loans to US is crippling economies.  Poverty fuels wars.  Muslim fundamentalism comes from lack of alternatives.

I would love to work with law enforcement agencies.  They have expertise.  They don_t looks at violence as a preventable health issues.  England doen_t have as many murders. We can import some of that.

Jobs.  Need to get clever about jobs.  If you walk through Avondale you pass a bunch of unemployed young men... possibly waiting for drug deals.
First thing is to have enough drug rehab services in Cinti.  Lawson will get a patient... six months wait list at CCAT house... etc.
Someone here said the Dems. didn_t articulate a good vision.  As energetic as we were in getting Kerry vote, I still felt we should have goals like _reduce shootings by half in the next five years_.  Specific goals.

Drugs: I need a lot of education.  I too think _let_s just legalize them, and tax them_.  If we follow the example of alcohol... at least we wouldnl_t have the bootleg crime circle.  But I don_t think this realistic.  We couldnl_t do it unilaterally.

Daisy:  comment about the international focus.  I am in favor of debt relief.  But also, two things: change policy that are bowing to global corporations.  Internationally, and nationally.  WTO, IMF, World Bank, structural adjustments that are being imposed on Asia and Africa... we encourage them to privatize their health care, water, transportation.  Wrong direction.  And doing it in an offensive way.  We are dramatically changing the power balance of individuals vs. corporations in our country and abroad as well.  The Dems need to be speaking out about these issues.  Dramatic change of the dist. of wealth.  The impact on people.

Vic: my experience of internationalism is that it has a positive effect on Americans of making us pull more together (?).  People who might be complaining about conditions here recognize when they think internationally, _We are so much better than the poor of other countries_ - we actually can help other countries.  I don_t know how this could be affected by a health commissioner.

Lawson: it¹s an attitude.  That_s how it could be effective.

Hugs,

ellen

Adams), so she's offering them at a 40% discount until September 1st.  Heather is also initiating a Painting Rental Program: rent an original for 12 months for 25% the original painting price.  Then: a) return the piece; b) switch it for another rental (again, 25% the total price); c) buy the piece (minus the 25% already paid); or d) buy a different piece (minus the 25% already paid).  Email Heather to receive a digital file & price list of available paintings.  More info from Heather @ 513.545.3572 & hmingo@cinci.rr.com.
